It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.
According to the data site, "Caddo Lake" is the most popular movie on HBO today, outpacing Gary Dauberman's long-anticipated "Salem's Lot" remake and some 2024 theatrical releases, including Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die," Mark Wahlberg's inspirational stray dog flick "Arthur The King,...

Plot: When an eight-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes, a series of past deaths and disappearances start to link together, forever altering a broken family’s history.
Review: When you stick the name M. Night Shyamalan in your marketing, you promise audiences a particular type of film. The trailer for Caddo Lake boasts Shyamalan’s credit as producer, coupled with the October debut on Max, making it seem like Caddo Lake is a dark thriller or horror film when it is anything but. Set in the sprawling wetland on the border between Louisiana and Texas, the real Caddo Lake is a protected body of water that has been important to indigenous peoples since before the United States even existed. With oil discovered in the late 20th Century, the lake took on a different importance, which factors into this mystery with an unexpected twist. Amy Adams has only been away from movie screens for a couple years. Her last credit is 2022’s “Disenchanted.” But Saturday night at the Toronto Film Festival felt like the return of an actor who’s been sorely missed, judging from the massive ovation Adams received after the world premiere of Marielle Heller’s new “Nightbitch.”
Adams’ complex, bravura performance fits right in with her other roles of self-actualization in “Junebug,” “Enchanted” and “Sharp Objects.” Here, in a film that combines domestic struggles, comedy, direct-to-camera address, social satire and magic, Adams plays a mother who finds herself transforming into a big, strong, beautiful dog.
Onstage after the premiere, Adams explained that she was drawn to the human qualities of the material. “One of the wonderful explorations of the film is about the isolation that comes from [motherhood]. The transformation from motherhood to parenthood is a shared experience that isn’t often shared.

Marielle Heller’s highly anticipated “Nightbitch,” based on Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel of the same name, had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 7. The Amy Adams-led thriller follows a woman who pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, before convincing herself that she is turning into a dog.
From Adams being announced to both star and produce back in the summer of 2020, the premise alone garnered chatter about a potential seventh Oscar nomination for the actress, who was most recently nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2019 for “Vice.” It’s also worth noting, three out of four of the last Best Actress winners have also been from Searchlight Pictures films.
However, for Adams “it’s not something I think about when I approach a role or when I walk on a red carpet,” she told IndieWire. “I’m always happy if the film...

Last week, I was lamenting about the overabundance of YA shows and movies centered around rich and evil teens and tweens, which usually have nothing to offer other than “drama.” Hence, Untamed Royals felt like a change of pace as it contrasted the lustful and reckless nature of teens who have nothing but opulence with the utter helplessness of those who have known nothing but poverty. This week, I’m here to talk about the overabundance of “adult” shows about insanely rich families that pretend to say something about wealth but end up making a case for those who, in another time, should’ve been sent to the guillotine instead of being empathized with. Some of the insufferable (either due to its writing or its fandom) examples that are coming to mind are The White Lotus, Succession, Schitt’s Creek, The Crown, and Big Little Lies. Sharp Objects and The Fall of the House of Usher...

I remember the moment I realized how much I love television. It was March 2, 2014, and for the first time in years, I skipped the Oscar telecast completely. I did it to watch a new episode of "True Detective," which was nearing the end of its phenomenal, influential, heavily-discussed first season. The show's grip on American pop culture that year was incredible: It won five Emmys, inspired countless parodies, and lit up the internet with theories and Easter egg hunts. People read Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow" after the word "Carcosa" popped up in the show. Viewers made gifs and edits of every single shot of Matthew McConaughey's hilariously bleak protagonist. And, importantly, people in Hollywood clearly started searching for the next "True Detective."
In the years that followed the show's first season, a whole host of TV series appeared that clearly followed the "True Detective" rulebook: Slow-burn criminal investigations,...

Sydney Sweeney has completely taken over as the Queen of Hotness in Hollywood with her roles in Euphoria and Anyone But You. While she is not a stranger to controversy, actress Sydney Sweeney has gradually risen to become one of the top stars in the industry at the moment. The actress has consistently played complicated characters who are wronged while also being a bankable star. One of her breakout roles has been Cassie Howard in Euphoria.
While Cassie is her most popular character, the second season of the show saw Cassie’s arc tumble to a love-lorn teenager who betrays her best friend for a guy. Despite being a huge tumble, Sweeney actually spoke about another character of hers that received the most amount of hate.

It can be tough to catch the magic of unease that “Longlegs” has laid on people during and after seeing the film.
Since seeing the latest Oz Perkins horror film, many have been clamoring to recapture that magic. Luckily there are plenty of TV shows that balance the supernatural with the everyday when it comes to hunting and tracking down a serial killer — and worse.
These are the seven TV shows you should check out once you see “Longlegs” and are needing to extend that pit-in-your-stomach feeling.

“You wanted to tell everyone’s story but your own.” It’s one of many cryptic and accusatory remarks made by Cleo Johnson (Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Moses Ingram) after her death. In Lady In The Lake, Cleo narrates her life from beyond the grave to an ambitious aspiring reporter, Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman), whose quest to investigate her murder leads her down a path of obsession and intrigue. Like all good mysteries, Lady In The Lake sets its stall high — and boy, does it take you on a wild adventure.
This TV adaptation of Laura Lippman’s bestselling novel could easily have drowned under the weight of its own material. Inspired by a true story, it’s a complex yet circular tale, with a plot that includes the disappearance of young Tessie Durst (Bianca Belle), the murder of Cleo, an assassination attempt on...

However, sometimes it takes a minute to find the right project, and lucky for us, Alma Har’el found Lady in the Lake. Gillian Anderson was once the face of TV thanks to her role as Dana Scully in “The X-Files.” That show awarded her some healthy, consistent Emmy attention (more on that later) before she underwent a bit of a break from that awards applause for a while. However, Netflix’s “The Crown” gave her career something of a second wind and that Andernaissance (sorry) has continued here with “Scoop.”
Like “The Crown,” Anderson excels here portraying a real-life person in a true story concerning the royal family. While she played Margaret Thatcher in “The Crown,” she takes on the role of presenter and journalist Emily Maitlis in Netflix’s “Scoop.” This TV movie documents the behind-the-scenes story of how producer Samantha McAlister (Billie Piper) secured the “scoop of the decade” and landed that interview with Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell).

10. The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen (1894)
A golden fantasy horror classic, The Great God Pan almost ruined its author’s reputation at the time: his tale of pagan woodland rituals, freaky crimes, and supernatural encounters was denounced by critics. But it influenced iconic writers like Bram Stoker, H. P. Lovecraft, and Stephen King himself who described it as “the best horror story in the English language.”
9. Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney (1955)
Tapping into quite the opposite subgenre, Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a timeless sci-fi horror following a doctor’s investigation into his patients' reports. As more and more people are seemingly losing their emotions and personalities, he uncovers an alien conspiracy for replacing humans with identical copies. A story to be “read and savored,” King says.

Peacock’s new limited series “Apples Never Fall” is cut from the same cloth as “Big Little Lies,” with both shows adapted from the novels of Australian author Liane Moriarty.
“Apples Never Fall” follows a family, led by four adult children, trying to piece together the mysterious disappearance of their mother Joy (Oscar-nominee Annette Bening). Bening is reliably excellent in this limited series, as is “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neil, who plays her on-screen husband. And Jake Lacy and Allison Brie shine as two of the four adult kids. All four performances have been praised by critics and its these turns that could lead the Emmy charge for the series.

“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” features a powerhouse performance from veteran star Sigourney Weaver, who once again reminds us that she is one of the best in the business. The acclaimed Amazon Prime Video limited series follows a young girl who survives a violent upbringing and is then subsequently raised on a flower farm by her grandmother. Weaver plays the grandmother, June, and ties the entire series together with the sheer might of her performance. She propelled the story to greatness and, as a result, propelled the series to excellent reviews.

Brie Larson won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Room” in 2016. Since then she has worked primarily in major franchises — appearing in “Avengers: Endgame” and a handful of other MCU projects as Captain Marvel and in the “Fast and Furious” film series. The actress hasn’t really found a project to show the talent she displayed in her tour de force performance in “Room” until now.
She stars in “Lessons in Chemistry,” the Apple TV+ show based on the novel of the same name by Bonnie Garmus. It follows Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a lab tech and chemist who uses her new job hosting a 1960s TV cooking show to educate housewives on scientific topics. The result is an entertaining period story in which Larson utilizes her distinct energy and impressive range to full effect. Larson injects Elizabeth with intelligence and heart but also zip, determination, and frustration in a well-rounded performance.
