It may seem that Netflix has taken over the period dramas’ scene with the glowing success of Bridgerton, the series that got all the possible titles. However, Apple TV is now killing it with their period shows too, as you may have seen such gems, as Lessons in Chemistry (2023), Masters of the Air, The New Look, and Manhunt (all 2024).
This year the platform released a must-see miniseries that also takes us back in time, but here we embark on a journey together with one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin. This show can even beat Bridgerton by its quality (and it surely does better when it comes to historical accuracy).
It starts by depicting the events of December 1776 after The Declaration of Independence was adopted. Franklin goes on a mission to France as commissioner for the United States, taking his 16-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin with him.

“The Gilded Age,” Julian Fellowes’ critically lauded follow-up to “Downton Abbey,” has returned for a second season on HBO. Although “The Gilded Age” slightly alters the formula that made “Downton Abbey” so popular, swapping out turn-of-the-century England for a rapidly developing America in the late 1800s, it takes place just a few decades before its predecessor. Does that just reflect Fellowes’ fascination with a particular period? Or should we take it as a sign from a master of the genre that this is the ideal setting for a period piece TV show?
Inspired by “The Gilded Age” Season 2, we took a look at Ranker’s list of the 101 Best Period Piece TV Shows (24K votes) to see if readers’ favorite period dramas and comedies happen to center around one period in particular. AMC Networks is planning to launch a cheaper, ad-supported tier later this year.
The new tier, which is expected to launch by October, will be pitched at the company’s 2023-2024 upfront, which will include a presentation in New York on Tuesday. Pricing for the tier was not disclosed.
“This is a big moment for AMC Networks and for our advertising partners, because it not only creates a fully-ad supported distribution ecosystem, it also allows advertisers to buy our shows, genres and franchises in a much more comprehensive and impactful way,” AMC Networks chief commercial officer Kim Kelleher said in a statement. “With our new series content, library titles and other targeted streaming platforms that are all bundled into AMC+, partners can move beyond individual shows and even series and choose to ‘own’ whole genres and franchises, and drive messaging to target audiences no matter what they are watching or where.

Choosing 10 of the weirdest Beatles songs is challenging. The Fab Four produced many strange tunes that have left fans scratching their heads for decades.
Once The Beatles stopped touring, they spent more time in the recording studio and experimented. They’d also discovered LSD and liked smoking marijuana. Here are the top 10 weirdest Beatles songs.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 10. ‘Mr. Moonlight’
“Mr. Moonlight” is a strange love song. The way John Lennon sings the verses is also a bit weird. The person in the tune is thanking the moon for giving them their love. It’s not an ordinary romantic song, and the melody is jarring. It’s also one of the most often-forgotten Beatles songs.
9. ‘Nowhere Man’
“Nowhere Man” could be about someone who doesn’t belong, but it’s still weird. The beginning verse paints a picture of someone out of a story like Alice in Wonderland.

After more than a year and a half of development, eOne recently started shopping its high-profile Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV series. Shepherded by Red Notice filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, it is based on Hasbro’s wildly popular fantasy role-playing game franchise.
The series was conceived as eOne’s priciest, largest-scope TV project ever, a series that would demonstrate the full potential of Hasbro’s 2019 acquisition of the indie film and TV studio. It started garnering bids and all seemed to be going smoothly — until the process was interrupted Thursday by the toymaker’s announcement that it plans to sell eOne’s film and TV businesses.

Prime Video dropped the latest trailer for The Peripheral, the long-gestating sci-fi drama from Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s Kilter Films that’s based on the bestselling novel by William Gibson. The cast and producers made an appearance at New York Comic-Con today to hype the series that premieres Oct. 21.
“When I read the book Count Zero [by Gibson], it felt like a first hit of acid. I never experienced anything like the worlds that Gibson created,” Nolan told convention goers Saturday. “I’ve watched every filmmaker rip off all the ideas, myself included, from his works and no one actually had the guts to go and adapt from the source. For us, it felt like coming full circle.”
The Peripheral stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) as Flynne Fisher, a woman trying to hold together the pieces of her broken family in a forgotten corner of tomorrow’s America. Flynne is smart,...

On my bookshelves, there are two gaping holes, spaces for long-awaited entries in favorite literary series. One is for The Winds of Winter, the sixth volume in George R.R. Rizzoli and Isles haven't solved a new case on TV in nearly six years.
While Tess Gerritsen continues to write new novels on the beloved duo, we've been left with a significant gap in our lives as their lives go on without us bearing witness on-screen.
The iconic duo of Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander were TV staples for over 100 episodes, but what are they (and the rest of the cast) doing now?
In Memorium: Lee Thompson Young -- Detective Barry Frost
Lee Thompson Young, who played Detective Frost (one of Jane Rizzoli's closest co-workers), tragically passed away in 2013 before the filming of Season Five.
Detective Frost's death got handled beautifully by the writers, from his death in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 1 to Jane seeing a vision of him in Rizzoli and Isles Season 5 Episode 18.
The episodes throughout Season Five left us crying, laughing, and missing Lee Thompson Young's presence on our screens.

To say that remakes suck is very easy to say. There are plenty of examples to show just how classics should not be touched. Remakes have their place in the world of film though, and help new people discover films they never knew existed. Then a movie comes along like Wrong Turn that makes the brave step of being different and being surprisingly good.
A group of friends hiking on the Appalachian Trail take a wrong turn and find themselves in trouble. A few week later one of the friend’s fathers takes the same trail to find out what happened to her…
My synopsis of the film is brief and not highly informative for a point, and that is that this is a movie you really need to go into cold.
