- Catholic priest Father Brown attends Anglican vicar Wilfred Bohum's garden party to celebrate his new church clock, which is interrupted by Wilfred's odious brother Norman. Young blacksmith Simeon Barnes attacks Norman, having evidence Norman slept with Simeon's wife Elizabeth, though she was a reluctant party as Norman had blackmailed her into paying her husband's gambling debt to him in kind. Norman is killed with a hammer from Simeon's forge and Elizabeth owns to the murder though Father Brown believes she is only protecting Simeon. Norman had also argued with his cleaner,Polish immigrant Susie, who had discovered he had had sex with a man and wanted to screw money from him to help her relatives in an internment camp. Against the advice of Inspector Valentine Father Brown does some sleuthing of his own and discovers that the church clock holds the answer to the true killer's identity.—don @ minifie-1
- Father Brown is the local parish priest in a small English village. At a church celebration down the road hosted by his colleague Rev. Wilfred Bohum, he meets Wilfred's brother Norman Bohum, a vulgar man and an out of control playboy. At the party, Norman gets into a fight with the village blacksmith, Simeon Barnes and is still trying to resolve an entanglement with Susie Jacinsky. Fed up with it all, Wilfred informs him that he will no longer be receiving anything from their late father's estate. It's no surprise therefore when Norman is found dead. Inspector Valentine is on the case and the evidence seems to point to Simeon Barnes but it's his wife who confesses to the crime. Father Brown doesn't believe it for a minute and sets out, over Valentine's objections, to find who did it.—garykmcd

Simeon's wife confesses to avoid her innocent husband being arrested as otherwise obvious suspect by blunt detective inspector Valentine. Father Brown uses his own methods to get to the truth, including Norman's other affairs, who blackmailed him and why Wilfred cut his allowance.—KGF Vissers
