Filmmaker James Mangold is set to direct "Captain Nemo," an origin story based on Jules Verne's classic nautical tale "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" at Disney Pictures.
Sebastian Gutierrez ("Hotel Noir," "The Eye") penned the latest draft, he and Mangold taking over for Andrew Kevin Walker and David Fincher respectively who were both previously attached to the project and were developing it before departing a few years back.
Disney, which previously adapted the property into the 1954 film starring James Mason and Kirk Douglas, will develop the new film along the lines of their other live-action reinventions of late such as "Maleficent" and "Alice in Wonderland," offering a different version of a classic story - in this case a full on prequel in which we see how Nemo created his battle submersible The Nautilus.
Mangold would do the project after he finishes the upcoming third and final Hugh Jackman-led standalone...

James Mangold’s hotly-anticipated and indeed R-rated Wolverine sequel has been making waves of late, though Deadline reports that Mangold will really be hitting the high seas further down the line with Disney’s long-gestating maritime adventure, Captain Nemo.
Pitched as an origins tale to H.G. Wells’ 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the reboot is currently situated in pre-production where Sebastian Gutierrez (Hotel Noir, The Eye) is busy whipping a script into shape. As one of the studio’s first live-action feature films, Leagues holds a tremendous amount of historical value for the House of Mouse. Originally released in 1954, Captain Nemo was the core anti-hero of the swashbuckling epic, and Disney is now hoping to weave a feature film out of Jules Verne’s story – one centering on the captain as he creates the Nautilus warship.
Not to be confused with Bryan Singer’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, it’s likely...

Actress Mandy Moore has finalized a deal to star in Dimension Films' underwater thriller 47 Meters Down. Dimension acquired 47 Meters Down back in April 2014, but we haven't heard about any movement on the project until now. The plot has been compared to the sci-fi thriller Gravity, only in an underwater environment.
The story revolves around two sisters, Kate (Mandy Moore) and Lisa, who become trapped at the bottom of the ocean when a diving expedition to observe sharks goes horribly wrong. When the cable attaching the observation cage to the boat breaks and the cage sinks to the bottom of the ocean, the sisters must figure out a way to get back to safety battling injuries, lack of oxygen, and, worst of all, blood thirsty, great white sharks. No other cast members have been confirmed at this time.
British filmmaker Johannes Roberts (Storage 24) is directing from his own screenplay.

Zach Braff’s sophomore feature, Wish I Was Here, has been progressing incredibly well in recent weeks.
Braff launched the project in April on Kickstarter, and after completing its goal within a matter of days, it was fully funded at just over $3m. at the end of last month.
With much of the leading cast already set, Braff has begun meeting with people to work on the other side of the camera alongside him, and after sitting down with Betsy Heimann, he’s announced that she’s officially on board to be the costume designer for Wish I Was Here.
Heimann’s career spans across three decades, and she has worked on some of the most memorable and acclaimed films over the years, including (but certainly not limited to) Reservoir Dogs, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, Art School Confidential, Funny People, and what Braff notes is his personal favourite,...

The last time we saw the talented and beautiful Rosario Dawson at the multiplex, it was unfortuantely in the Kevin James vehicle "The Zookeeper." Since then, she's done a string of indies -- "10 Years" and "Hotel Noir" perhaps the most notable -- but she's heading back toward the mainstream in 2013. She's currently lensing the highly anticipated sequel, "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," she leads Danny Boyle's spring thriller "Trance" (more on that in a second) and now she's booking a gig in a very promising drama as well. Variety reports that the actress has joined Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan's "Queen Of The Night." Starring Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman and Mireille Enos, the story centers on a father (Reynolds) whose daughter was abducted. Eight years after the girl was taken, a series of disturbing clues convince the father that the now 17-year-old remains alive, and he is determined to find.

Any kind of hardboiled film noir confection, released in 2012 with a straight face, is going to be something of a put on. Especially if its filmed digitally, which robs black-and-white (the favored presentation of film noir) of its velveteen lushness, instead replacing it with a flat, artificial haze. Still, "Hotel Noir," the latest film from writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez (who is also Carla Gugino's boyfriend, which might be his mightiest accomplishment), is a surprisingly effective, enjoyable romp. It's pretty earnest (almost too earnest) attempt at a straightforward film noir, with minor, wink-wink-nudge-nudge deviations and an impressively game cast. If given the opportunity, it might not be a bad idea to check into "Hotel Noir." Shot in 15 days on a shoestring budget of $300,000, "Hotel Noir" primarily concerns a shadowy private detective figure named Felix (played by Rufus Sewell, channeling his gravely...

Sebastian Gutierrez is that rare director who can make a sleek-looking film while getting actors to say the strangest things in the most sincere ways. His work on Women in Trouble and Elektra Luxx proved as much, elevating B-movies into the A+ range, and now his ensemble sensibilities return with a 1958 detective story flair in Hotel Noir. In the film, the detective (Rufus Sewell) hides away in a hotel waiting for killers to find him, and it looks like he has plenty to hold his attention. Malin Ackerman is dancing and taking showers; Carla Gugino is speaking easy and being smokey; and Mandy Moore is…seducing Danny DeVito. Naturally. Plus, genre legend Robert Forster gets a nice T-bone steak of a role to chew on. Not bad at all. Check out the trailer for yourself: Release dates for the film aren’t firm, but a recent Kickstarter campaign has ensured that it’ll be on more than...
