Stephen King‘s novel The Institute (which can be purchased Here) reached store shelves on September 10, 2019 – and that same day, it was announced that David Kelley and Jack Bender, the duo behind the King series adaptation Mr. Mercedes, were working on a limited series adaptation of The Institute. Nearly five years have gone since then and Kelley has dropped off the project along the way, but The Institute is moving forward at MGM+ – and Deadline has learned the names of eleven more cast members who have signed on as series regulars. They are: Julian Richings (Supernatural, pictured above), Fionn Laird (Under the Banner of Heaven), Hannah Galway (Sex/Life), Robert Joy (Land of the Dead), Viggo Hanvelt (Our Christmas Mural), Arlen So (Something Rotten), Birva Pandya (The Umbrella Academy), Dan Beirne (Ginny & Georgia), Martin Roach (Suits), Jane Luk (Streams Flow from a River), and – in the lead role of Luke Ellis – Joe Freeman.

One of the most talked-about - not to mention divisive - elements of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus was the introduction of another Xenomorph/human hybrid in the last act, and previously-released concept art has revealed that a number of different designs for the creature were considered.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay (Isabela Merced) injects herself with the Rook android's Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a pretty damn terrifying hybrid, which kills its mother and very nearly manages to eliminate Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) before being blasted into space.
Now, concept artist Dane Hallett has shared some more of his work to Instagram, and it seems the Offspring's original final form was going to look a lot more like a standard Xenomorph.

Well, that was certainly quick! Maxton Hall - The World Between Us season 2 filming is already all done and finished. And it was much faster than I thought! Production began on the season in summer 2024, and it only took them a few months to get through it all. I mean, with how this show exploded on Prime Video and got a switft renewal, I'm not surprised the streamer wants to churn it out quickly and strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.
Per Deadline, production on the second season wrapped last week, and fans were even flocking to sets in Germany while the cameras were rolling. It definitely has a huge following, and this is one proof of that. Maxton Hall became Prime Video's largest international title when it first premiered in May 2024. A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up, but apparently didn’t. Dexter: Original Sin went into production a few months ago, and now a first look trailer has arrived online, along with a premiere date that’s much sooner than I was expecting. The trailer can be seen in the embed above, and the premiere date is December 13th on the Paramount+ streaming service, with the Showtime premiere to follow on December 15th.

2024 got off to a very rough start at the box office, particularly in regards to mainstream horror releases. In 2022 and 2023, horror proved to be one of the most bankable genres that theaters could depend on in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the likes of "Night Swim," "Imaginary," "Abigail," and others disappointed earlier this year. Things have rebounded and we now have hits such as "A Quiet Place: Day One" and the unexpected $100 million hit that was "Longlegs." One movie stands tall above the rest though, and that movie is "Alien: Romulus." Even more crazy to consider? That movie nearly went straight to Hulu.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, director Fede Alvarez's "Romulus" added another $3.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took the lion's share of the attention with a massive $111 million opening, but the latest "Alien" movie is still holding its own. To that end,...

“Rise of the Raven,” the anticipated European event series from Beta Film, behind “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” and producer Robert Lantos, will world premiere at Cannes content trade fair Mipcom on Oct. 22.
Beta Film has shared in exclusivity with Variety a first teaser to the series, which is a bracing introduction to the scale and ambition of “Rise of the Raven’s” production values, as well as the brutality of its battles scenes as it tells in an 10-part epic the extraordinary real-life feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Kádár, who turned back the tide of the Ottoman Empire’s seemingly unstoppable advance into Europe.
This looks set to climax in the series as in history in 1456 when Hunyadi won a bloody Battle of Belgrade against a vast Ottoman force twice the size of his troops who were sometimes armed with just slings and patriotic fervor.

Triumph, starring and produced by Maria Bakalova, a 2021 Oscar acting nominee for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, will be Bulgaria‘s International Feature Film submission for the 2025 Academy Awards.
The darkly comedic movie by award-winning Bulgarian filmmakers Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov was selected after a unanimous vote by the country’s selection committee ahead of Triumph‘s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.
Grozeva and Valchanov’s previous film, The Father, which featured a cameo by Bakalova, became Bulgaria’s 2021 International Oscar entry after winning the Grand Prix at the 2019 Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
Triumph is the last part of a movie trilogy by Grozeva and Valchanov that includes the 2014 The Lesson, also a TIFF selection, and 2016’s Glory. It marks Bakalova’s return to Bulgarian cinema and the first film she did in her native country following her breakout role in Borat 2, which launched her Hollywood career.

Alien: Romulus is set at some point in the 57-year gap between Ridley Scott's original and James Cameron's Aliens, which means Ellen Ripley was out there - somewhere!
The movie contains several call-backs to earlier films in the franchise, but aside from that quote towards the end, there didn't appear to be any direct references or nods to Sigourney Weaver's iconic heroine.
Or so we thought!
While chatting to the ReelBlend podcast, director Fede Álvarez revealed that there are “a few clues I’ve planted in the movie,” before adding that “it kind of defeats the whole purpose” if he points out exactly what they are.
There's been some speculation that Ripley's escape shuttle can be seen blasting away from the wreckage of the Nostromo at the beginning of the movie.
The filmmaker also suggests that there may have been early discussions about somehow working Ripley into the movie.

Alien: Romulus contains quite a few call-backs and nods to Ridley Scott's original masterpiece and James Cameron's sequel, but it also reintroduces a much-maligned concept from Alien: Resurrection.
Towards the end of the movie, a pregnant and dying Kay injects herself with the Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. This results in her giving birth to a human/alien hybrid.
Named "The Offspring" in the credits, this rather terrifying creature does look a lot better than the albino monstrosity from Resurrection, but taking inspiration from one of the least popular movies in the franchise by introducing another hybrid was a bold choice that not everyone has got on board with.
While speaking to THR, director Fede Alvarez revealed that the studio did initially have some reservations.
"They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, 'Is it too much? Do we really have to go there?...

Irish comedy “Obituary” is prepping for a second season, Variety has learned.
The popular black comedy, which features Siobhán Cullen as an underpaid obituarist who turns to murder, is written by Ray Lawlor.
The plan is for Season 2 to run to six episodes, Variety understands, with Lawlor returning to helm the script. The show’s original producers — Magamedia and Apc Studios — are once again involved, while Hulu is contributing funding.
Casting hasn’t yet been confirmed but it seems unlikely the show would return without lead star Cullen, who has also recently appeared in “The Dry” and Netflix series “Bodkin.”
The first season of “Obituary,” which aired on Irish network Rte, followed Cullen as obituary writer Elvira Clancy, who takes matters into her own hands when her work begins drying up. Soon a crime correspondent at the local paper starts investigating the murders — and falling for Clancy.

Legendary Entertainment is looking to dip back into the prequel well after giving Dune a prequel series with Max’s Dune: Prophecy. Deadline reports that an origin story for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is in the works at the indie studio from Eric Heisserer (Shadow and Bone, Bird Box).
The prequel is part of a first-look deal with Heisserer and Chronology, his recently launched production company with Carmen Lewis, who has signed with Legendary to work on IP and related projects.
Pacific Rim was originally released in theaters here in the United States on July 12, 2013 in 3D and IMAX 3D, stomping its way to $411 million at the worldwide box office.
In the film, “As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

"Pacific Rim" is one of the best American blockbuster movies of the 2010s ... or one of the best kaiju movies ever ... or even one of the best live-action anime movies not based on a specific anime (but still clearly inspired by "Patlabor" and "Tetsujin-28"). It's also a hugely important movie for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and an essential part of the Oscar-winner's filmography. After all, "Pacific Rim" was both his first original English-language script and his first original film in seven years -- not to mention the film that marked his transition into a full-time Hollywood director.
Still, as successful as the movie was, and as much as it depended on del Toro's unique visual style and imagination, a sequel (titled "Pacific Rim Uprising") was made without his involvement, meaning his original ideas for "Pacific Rim 2" were all scrapped. And though it seems unlikely that a third "Pacific Rim" will ever get made,...

Alien: Romulus Ends Deadpool And Wolverine's 3-Week Run As Box Office No. 1 With $100M+ Global Debut
The Xenomorphs have put an end to Wade Wilson and Logan's three-week run as kings of the box office.
Disney/20th Century Studios' Alien: Romulus had an even stronger opening weekend than expected both domestically and overseas, and has knocked Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine off the top spot.
The Fede Alvarez-directed sci-fi horror flick took in $45.1 million (well ahead of a projected high-$20 million debut) in North America to give it the second-best opening of the franchise, not adjusted for inflation. Internationally, Romulus opened to $66.7 million for a worldwide start of $108.2 million.
This is a great start for the movie, which was originally slated to go direct to streaming on the Disney-owned Hulu before the (wise) decision was made to shift to theatrical at the start of principal photography.

Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and while the response from fans and critic has been largely positive, there are a few story choices that haven't gone over particularly well.
If you haven't had the chance to see the movie yet, beware of major spoilers from this point on.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive at the derelict space station, Romulus, they discover that the ship's android is still functional. They plug him in, and we see that the synthetic (sorry... artificial person) is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
Yes, the late Ian Holm is resurrected via a combination of CGI and animatronics, and, as you might expect, the decision has been met with some backlash.
During an interview with EW, director Fede Álvarez explains why they used Holm's likeness for this new android, and reveals that he reached out to the...

Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and we're breaking down some of the movie's biggest moments and surprises - including what might be one of the most gruesome, intense, and flat out insane endings of the entire franchise.
Major spoilers follow.
After losing half of the Corbelan's crew to the Xenomorphs, Rain and Andy - who has been given a new prime directive by the Romulus' android science office, Rook - decide to get the severely injured and pregnant Kay back to the cryotubes and attempt to escape the rapidly crashing space station.
Andy is incapacitated and left behind, and when Rain returns to help her "brother," a fading Kay injects herself with the Prometheus 5 formula in an effort to keep herself alive.
Rain and Andy manage to kill or evade the remaining Xenos and make it back to the drop-ship, but what was shaping up to...

Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters and is already on track to become a big success (but not without controversy) with rave reviews and a projected $40M+ opening. I’m sure the sequel wheels are already turning, but Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez teased a different way to expand the franchise: another Predator crossover.
Not only that, but he teased that he could rope Prey director Dan Trachtenberg into doing it with him. “Maybe it’s something I have to co-direct with my buddy Dan,” Álvarez told Deadline. “Maybe we should do like Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez did with Dusk Till Dawn. I’ll direct a half, and he’ll direct another half. It depends on how well this (Romulus) does, if people want to see that.“
The first Alien vs. Predator movie was released in 2004, and while it was largely trashed upon its debut, I found the film to be good fun.

Few cinematic characters have left as big of an impression as Ellen Ripley, Sigourney Weaver’s iconic “Alien” survivor, who led four films in the franchise and left behind some massive shoes to fill for everyone who’s come since. In “Alien: Romulus,” that’s a young cast of franchise newcomers, led by “Priscilla” and “Civil War” star Cailee Spaeny.
Directed by “Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” filmmaker Fede Álvarez, the latest installment heads back between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens,” introducing a young group of friends desperate to escape their grungy mining colony. You will, of course, recognize the Xenomorph — H.R. Giger’s inimitable alien creature — but for everyone else, here’s a handy guide to the “Alien: Romulus” cast and characters.

Alien: Romulus is now in theaters, and while reviews have been very positive for the most part, you may have noticed that quite a few critics mentioned something that didn't work for them (some had no problem spoiling it outright).

If you haven't been to see the movie yet, major spoilers follow.

Alien: Romulus is now just mere hours away from playing in theaters nationwide. And, with it currently "Certified Fresh" at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes (making it the third best-reviewed instalment), excitement is at an all-time high among fans of the long-running sci-fi/horror franchise.
There's been a huge amount of speculation about whether this latest instalment ties into the wider Alien franchise, though it has largely been billed as a standalone story. Still, with the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios looking to restore the Xenomorphs to their former glory in theaters, we certainly don't anticipate this being a one-and-done (regardless of whether that takes the form of a direct sequel).
Before you rush to your local multiplex to watch this latest instalment to the series, we're sure you're all asking the same thing: does Alien: Romulus have a post-credits scene?

Alien: Romulus bursts into theaters this Friday, and following (mostly) positive social media reactions, the full review embargo lifted earlier today.
Though there are a few negative verdicts, the majority of critics were very impressed with Fede Alvarez's revival, which is being hailed as a return to form for the long-running franchise after several disappointing/divisive instalments.
With 95 reviews counted so far, Romulus is now Certified Fresh at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises," reads the critics consensus.

The first social media reactions to Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus are in (via SFFGazette.com) following last night's early screening, and the movie is being hailed as "among the very best" of the franchise (one post actually claims that it is the best).
These initial reactions are almost always at least somewhat hyperbolic, and while we're sure Romulus is very good/great, are we really supposed to believe that it's better or even as good as Ridley Scott's masterpiece or James Cameron's sequel?
At any rate, it does sound like the movie has managed to recapture some of the sustained dread and pervasive atmosphere of the original Alien, and several posts mention an insane final act.
Have a read through the reactions below, and check out a new teaser.

It has been a full seven years since a new entry in the "Alien" franchise has graced the silver screen. Director Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant" arrived in 2017 and failed to generate enough interest to justify a continuation of those prequels. Now, under the Disney regime, the Xenomorphs are back in action, this time with a new director behind the camera for "Alien: Romulus." With a stripped down premise, the promise of lots of practical creature effects, and excitement from horror fans, this one is poised to be a late summer surprise at the box office.
"Romulus" is eyeing a debut in the $41 to $51 million range when it opens next weekend, per Box Office Theory. That would be a huge win for Disney and 20th Century Studios. The film is directed by Fede Alvarez, of "Don't Breathe" and "Evil Dead (2013)" fame. "Covenant" opened to $36.1 million and finished its run with $74.2 million domestically.

Alien: Romulus is now just over two weeks away from arriving in theaters and a terrifying new sneak peek has been unleashed by 20th Century Studios. We also have more than half a dozen exclusive exhibitor/ticketing partner posters and these are among the best we've seen this year!
Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, director Fede Álvarez revealed whether this movie will link up with Noah Hawley's upcoming Alien: Earth FX TV series.
"They were doing the show already when we started writing, and there’s such different timelines that there was no way to connect them, even if you wanted," the filmmaker explained. "This is such a standalone story that happened so much later than their story, as far as I know,” he said. “I don’t know all the details of the show, but I can’t wait to watch it.

With all the excitement coming out of Comic-Con for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus panel, fans can tell the filmmaker gets it. For those of us who saw Alien and Aliens in the cinema opening night in 1979 and 1986, along with the screams and cheers from the audience, he knows what a Alien movie should be! He’s sticking with canon and it’s going to be vicious fun.
With an energetic enthusiasm for the franchise, Alvarez decided to go back to the basics when shooting the film. “I knew that I wanted to take this chapter back to the beginning, not only story-wise but in terms of visual style,” explains Alvarez. “I wanted to keep it simple and focus on a few characters you could get to know and love.”

The San Diego Comic-Con panel for Alien: Romulus began with a sizzle reel showing the desperate state of the future world. The young protagonists are confused as they explore their new surroundings. Alan Seeger’s “I Have a Rendevous with Death” begins to play. The reel then cuts to the group battling a swarm of Face Huggers. It’s the same footage guests saw at CinemaCon earlier this year.

A new international poster for Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus has been released, and it gives us a terrifying new look at the long-awaited big-screen return of the Xenomorph, as one of the towering terrors faces down Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The iconic alien of the title hasn't really undergone any major redesigns over the years (aside from the dog/ox-burster in Alien 3), but this latest take on the creature does appear to be a bit larger than any we've seen in previous movies.
The trailers promised a return to the visceral thrills and atmosphere of dread from Ridley Scott's original classic, and the cast ensured fans that Romulus will not be for the faint of heart during a recent interview with Total Film.
"I really do believe that there are specific sequences in this film that will scar some kids that sneak into the movie for life,...
