The Sulu Sea is a body of water in the southwestern area of the Philippines, and as the opening crawl of Land of Bad tells us, home to some of the most violent extremists in Asia. It’s also where Master Sergeant John “Sugar” Sweet and his team, Sergeant Abell and Sergeant Bishop are being deployed.
Joining them is Air Force Sergeant J.J. Kinney a rookie Jtac. He’s not qualified to go out with these guys, but he was the only one available to act as their link with drone operators Reaper and Nia back in the US.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.

Production starts next week in Perth, West Australia, under the direction of Renee Webster, whose previous directing credits include Australian Broadcasting Corporation series “The Heights” and “Itch.” Webster also penned the screenplay.
The completed film will be released in Australia and New Zealand by Madman Entertainment. International sales are handled by Germany’s Beta Cinema.

Michael Caton and 2015 Young Filmmaker of the Year winner Lauren Brunswick
Nominees have been announced for the West Australian Screen Awards (Wasa) Young Filmmaker of the Year and include Briege Whitehead, Jess Black, Hayden Fortescue and Jordon Prince-Wright.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $5000 and a custom-made Geoffrey Drake-Brockman Wasa trophy..
Last year.s winner, producer Lauren Brunswick (Top Knot Detective) said the value of the award lived within its ability to empower other emerging filmmakers to feel they could achieve their ambitions.
"The feat of beginning a career becomes more manageable when we feel someone has tackled it before us. A spotlight of this nature allowed me to meet more people within the film community, feel the enormous support they offer, and remember to whittle the pressures of our aspirations down to a series of steps that we must collectively be brave to undertake,". she said.

While the major exhibitors and distributors are close to an agreement to shorten release windows from 120 to 90 days next year, the chances of a far more flexible regime for Australian and other independent films appear remote.
Despite calls for shorter windows from Australian producers, screen agencies and home entertainment retailers, there seems little prospect of a different regime for indie films.
The general view among distributors, at least the larger companies, is that there is no case for Australian or other non-majors. films to be treated any differently.

While the screen industry has plenty to celebrate as Australian films are set to finish the year with around $87 million in B.O. takings, the results show a sizable number of films failed to address fundamental questions.
Namely: Who precisely will watch my film and which cinemas will play it at a time when theatrical release here increasingly is a sure way to lose money?
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason is delighted with the range of films and documentaries that have resonated with audiences this year.
Mad Max Fury Road, The Dressmaker, Oddball and The Water Diviner all grossed more than $10 million, and Paper Planes just under. Last Cab to Darwin, Blinky Bill: The Movie, That Sugar Film and Holding the Man performed well, although Mason believes Neil Armfield.s gay-themed romance, which grossed $1.2 million, deserved to make double that.
Still, Mason questions the mindset of a sizable section of the screen industry.

Lionsgate and the world.s exhibitors were probably betting that nearly everyone who saw The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 would roll up to the finale.
How wrong they were -- and by a long shot. In Australia the finale of the franchise based on Suzanne Collins. novels rang up $9.8 million on 624 screens. That.s $2 million less than the debut of part 1 and Catching Fire.s $12.5 million opening in 2013.
Some exhibitors were theorizing that the Francis Lawrence-directed action fantasy was impacted by going against the second weekend of Spectre. That may be so although the Bond film plunged by 52 per cent to $5.4 million, scoring $20.6 million so far.
Another possible explanation is that some cinemagoers were so let down by part 1 they had no desire to see how the story ended. Or maybe it.s just that part 2 is bleak, too long and lacking the excitement and thrills of earlier editions.

Add Sucker to the growing list of Australian films that will have event cinema screenings followed a month or so later by DVD and VOD release. The producers and Madman Entertainment are counting on the sizable YouTube following of lead actor John Luc to help drive awareness of the comedy-drama which co-stars Timothy Spall and Lily Sullivan. Directed by Ben Chessell, who co-wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Leung, the film will screen at Hoyts Cinemas in the mainland capitals early next month. Luc and Leung will attend the screenings. Madman will release the title on VOD and DVD on January 13. "There will only be more and more attempts to innovate around release strategy for films which have audiences more broadly spread across various channels," a Madman spokesman said. Luc plays Lawrence, an 18-year-old Chinese Australian who cheats in his high school final year exams and fails to get into medicine.

Screen Australia.s revamped P&A fund is supporting the theatrical release of three Australian films.
The distributors of Last Cab to Darwin (Icon), The Dressmaker (Universal) and Blinky Bill: The Movie (Studiocanal) are getting a total of $1 million.
Those are non-recourse loans, which means the agency expects to be repaid if the films recoup their release costs but will wipe off the debt if they do not.
However producers and distributors who may be keen to access the revolving fund should know that only $2 million or so is available per year, depending on the rate of returns. Hence only one or two more films are likely to benefit from sizable P&A support this financial year.
On July 1 the fund was renamed P&A Plus and the guidelines were tweaked to be less prescriptive and to make clearer provision to support films that take an alternative distribution path.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation has surpassed the majority of expectations so far, scoring a sublime 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and nailing the second-best opening weekend in the franchise’s history. Sadly, not every movie can be quite that successful, as the diverse cast of the $2+ billion franchise are doubtless well aware.
Every actor has to start somewhere and every actor takes a blatant paycheck role every now and then, but there’s little denying that these 15 Mission: Impossible actors, from Ethan Hunt himself to that revolving door of love interests, would likely all prefer for these poor efforts to be quietly forgotten.
In some cases the movies are bland enough that they’ve all but evaporated into the ether already, but others are so infamously poor that they’ll endure long after the respective actor isn’t around anymore, a monument to what either greed or desperation can do to just about any entertainer.

Seven Australian films have been released in Us cinemas this year led by The Water Diviner, which has grossed a decent $US2.5 million in 12 days on 320 screens.
The other six titles all had limited theatrical exposure as a platform for VOD and DVD sales. Predestination, for example, premiered in January on 20 screens and earned $68,372.
Not so with George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, which Warner Bros. is launching on May 15 (May 14 in Australia) after the Cannes Film Festival premiere..
A little-heralded success is Genevieve Bailey's I Am Eleven, which has had a staggered roll-out since last September and amassed $301,000 so far, including nearly $100,000 this calendar year.. In Australia the feature doc has grossed an admirable $330,000.
However most other producers contacted by If have not yet been given B.O. figures and digital sales results from the Us distributors, which could suggest tardy reporting practices.

How do you cast Simon Pegg in a movie and then do virtually nothing with him? In the Australian film Kill Me Three Times, Pegg plays a ruthless, expert hit man — which seems like a stretch until you realize that part of the actor’s comic repertoire has been to portray characters seemingly ill-suited for him. (See also: Hot Fuzz.) But Kill Me Three Times doesn’t really toy with that dissonance; it doesn’t really toy with anything. It’s a comedy thriller whose main joke appears to be that it’s playing everything straight, so that bits of humor are ultimately punctuated with people getting their heads blown off or whatever. That would all be fine — after all, Quentin Tarantino does something similar, to great effect — except that this twisty-turny film seems too enamored of its twisty-turniness to give us characters we can latch onto. Told in an...

Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kill Me: Stenders’ Comedy Noir a Blend of Standard Tricks
Australian filmmaker Kriv Stenders lands his highest profile project yet with sixth feature Kill Me Three Times, a comic rural neo-noir starring a cast of notable local talent and the pleasant persuasion of Simon Pegg in a slightly villainous pale. Affably entertaining as it navigates us through the usual set of devious double crossings that eventually converge into a grand cluster of shenanigans, none of its characters are very carefully drawn, and the film sometimes feels victim to its own familiarity. With stakes that are never high enough and dark comedy that’s never cynical enough, James McFarland’s screenplay never supersedes its cinematic inspirations, and settles a bit too snugly into a derivative sheath.
Assassin Charlie Wolfe (Simon Pegg) lies mortally wounded, more startled at the fact that he may indeed die outside of a...

Editor’s note: Our review of Kill Me Three Times originally ran during London Film Festival 2014, but we’re re-posting it now as the film opens in limited theatrical release. Kill Me Three Times is a comedic thriller that follows three overlapping murder plots in a gorgeous Australian beach town, all narrated by Simon Pegg as Charlie Wolfe, a quick-witted, heartless assassin. Scenes are shown from different characters’ points of view in non-chronological order as the lives of six locals (played by prominent Australian actors) intertwine. Sounds engaging and fun in theory, but in practice the humor is almost non-existent apart from Pegg, and the Wild Things-style “twists” rarely surprise. The intricate plot goes something like this: Wolfe is hired by a man (Callan Mulvey) to murder his wife (Alice Braga), but he doesn’t realize that two other people (Teresa Palmer and Sullivan Stapleton) already have detailed plans to kill her as part of an insurance...

Read More: Watch: No One is Safe in 'Kill Me Three Times' Red Band Trailer (Nsfw) The story goes, that when Simon Pegg finished up the shoot for "Shaun of the Dead," a journalist asked if he was going to abandon British film and TV altogether for bigger and better jobs across the Atlantic. His reported response was, "It's not like I'm going to run off and do 'Mission: Impossible III'!" But "Mission Impossible III" is indeed what he did, followed by the "Mission Impossible" installments "Ghost Protocol" and the upcoming "Rogue Nation," on top of two "Star Trek" reboot films. In between these blockbusters, Pegg has acted in a slew of indies, much like his latest film, "Kill Me Three Times," which is now available on VOD and hits theaters tomorrow, April 10. In the comedic-action film, directed by Kriv Stenders, Pegg plays Charlie Wolfe, a...

This weekend, the lives of a young couple intertwine with an older man as he reflects on a lost love in "The Longest Ride," and Oscar Isaac stars as a tech genius developing a groundbreaking experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I. in "Ex Machina."
Also in theaters this weekend: "Kill Me Three Times" stars Simon Pegg as a professional hit-man who finds himself in three tales of murder, blackmail, and revenge after a botched contract assignment. Directed by Ryan Gosling, "Lost River" follows a single mother who is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret town. In "Desert Dancer," a dancer risks everything to start a dance company amidst his home country of Iran's politically volatile climate and that nation's ban on dancing. A red Vw Bug bounces down a beach road in Australia, past a sign that cautions, "Dangerous Coast: Lives Have Been Lost." No kidding. Kriv Stenders's comic crime spree Kill Me Three Times chases after mustachioed hitman Charlie (Simon Pegg), who's himself chasing after his latest target, a cheating wife named Alice (Alice Braga). The problem — and possible blessing — is that Alice, too, is in the crosshairs of a deadly dentist (Sullivan Stapleton) and his wife (Teresa Palmer), who are in turn being hunted by...oh man, this is already exhausting... The flick, written by debut screenwriter James McFarland, is twisty, clever, and totally Nineties, complete with a bag of cash that gets passed from crook to crook, color saturation cranked up to cartoonish, ...

Here’s a suggestion for Kriv Stenders, director of the flagrantly messy “Kill Me Three Times”: don’t be so kind to first-time screenwriters. As we wrestle with our thoughts over who to chastise for this incomprehensibly cluttered picture, it can either be James MacFarland for his first screenplay or Stenders for not using the experience he has from his more compelling movies (“Red Dog,” “Boxing Day”) to take control of the situation. As it stands, they are both culprits for making “Kill Me Three Times” feel artificial in every possible way, despite having Simon Pegg along for the ride. If it were funnier, perhaps the trite action and insipid characters could be excused, but it isn’t nearly funny enough for that. “Fuck me,” says Pegg’s Charlie Wolfe in the opening voice-over, as an aerial shot of a gorgeous Australian beach comes into view. It’s the...
