This time around, Calcifer has returned to the shop as a cute three-dimensional drink coaster, a 500-ml glass drinking bottle and an orange "die-cut" bag. A new animation production brand that aims to "deliver anime to the world" has been announced, bringing on top executives with prior experience at both Studio Ghibli and Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump.

On Jan. 1, 2025, Ldh Japan Co., Ltd. announced a company merger, folding Ldh apparel Inc., expg Inc., and Ldh Digital Inc., into Ldh Japan as the surviving company. On Jan. 6, Oricon reported that Ldj Japan had launched a new animation production brand, Ldh Animation. Ldh Animation's stated aim is to "dare to deliver Japanese animation to the world, with the three pillars: 'Production of works as an animation studio,' 'planning and licensing business,' and 'expansion of its digital sphere of influence.'" To help steer this new project, former Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino, along with former Weekly Shonen Jump editor-in-chief and former senior managing director of Shueisha, Masahiko Ibaraki, both came on board as advisors.

Dame Jane Goodall, who celebrated her 90th birthday this year, is one of the world’s foremost experts on chimpanzees. She’s dedicated her life and career to studying their behaviour and habits. She pioneered research techniques, and forged her own path in the male dominated world of 1960s science.

Goodall’s former husband, wildlife filmmaker and Dutch nobleman Hugo van Lawick, captured many hours of landmark footage of her work with chimpanzees in the Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. And her life has already been chronicled in various documentaries, most recently in Brett Morgen’s award winning 2017 documentary Jane. According to Deadline, a fully fledged biopic is now in the works.

Monster movies are a popular subgenre that often features unique, threatening creatures, resulting in exciting and thrilling narratives, but a few monster films over the years have taken longer to earn proper appreciation. The annual fest, which recently unveiled its Indies Awards Show slated for December 2024, has announced the winners of its 2024 screenplay competition. Slamdance recognizes writers in feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot, short film, and mentorship categories, with more than $18,000 in cash prizes, plus industry services, awarded. Florence and the Machine is remembering its first album — but backed by an orchestra! Last night, Florence Welch was joined by the BBC Orchestra for a symphonic reimagining of the group’s debut album, Lungs.

The show, called “Symphony of Lungs,” was part of BBC Proms and saw Welch sing the 2009 album in its entirety from Royal Albert Hall for her only full concert of the year.

As someone who hasn't been shy about sharing my undying love for the 2008 zombie horror comedy Dance of the Dead over the years, (I even had the pleasure of helping host 10th anniversary screenings for the film back in 2018), I'm always stoked to see what director Gregg Bishop is working on, so I'm especially thrilled and chilled that Bishop's new short film, Howl at the Dead, will have its Canadian premiere tonight at the Fantasia International Film Festival!

The 2004 anime movie Howl's Moving Castle will celebrate its 20th anniversary this fall. Just in time for the upcoming celebration, the official Studio Ghibli store is selling an officially licensed lunch set based on the fantastical movie.

Donguri Sora, the official online store of Studio Ghibli, is selling two lunch-based items that are inspired by the magical film by Hayao Miyazaki. The first item is a purse-type lunch bag that features aluminum vapor deposition inside. It also includes mesh pockets for ice packs or other items, as well as a double zipper to easily open or close the bag. The second item is a storage case designed to hold two food utensils, like chopsticks and a spoon, both of which are included as part of that set.

Every year, Nippon TV holds a 24-hour telethon designed to raise money for various environmental and disaster relief charities in Japan. This year, Studio Ghibli assisted its parent company by creating a canine mascot for Nippon TV's new charity TV shirt line.

Per Nippon TV's official website, Studio Ghibli Managing Director Goro Miyazaki recently created new artwork featuring a disgruntled-looking dog that resembles Heen, the lovable elderly dog from Ghibli's 2004 film Howl's Moving Castle. As shown below, the accompanying text reads, "Will Love Save the Earth?" -- an active nod to the Telethon's recurring "Love Saves the Earth" theme. Goro's Heen lookalike will be Nippon TV's charity mascot this year, appearing on white, yellow and gray T-shirts that are scheduled to hit Aeon store shelves starting July 4. At the time of writing, the retail price (including tax) is approximately 2,000 yen (or US$12.52). A portion of proceeds from all shirt sales will be donated to charity.

Even 20 years after its release, Studio Ghibli's 2004 high fantasy feature, Howl's Moving Castle, remains a common fan-favorite. Now, Ghibli's online shop has another special treat in store for Howl fans, as it has just replenished its stock of collectible "Lantern Calcifer" keychains.

Donguri Sora recently reintroduced the aforementioned keychain to its Gbl product collection, which is dedicated to stylish and unique fashion items for hardcore Ghibli fans. Standing at about 145 mm (or 5.7 inches) in height, this keychain features Calcifer nestled comfortably inside a small, antique-style lantern. By hitting the "on" button on the lantern's base, Calcifer can be made to glow for an extra touch of realism. According to Donguri Sora's item description, the metal keychain is removable, giving buyers the option to display the keychain as an "interior decoration." Including tax, the retail price is an affordable 2,420 yen (roughly US$15.33).
