Billy Joe Shaver, the outlaw-country original who wrote classic songs for the likes of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and whose “Live Forever” was performed by Robert Duvall in the 2009 Best Picture Oscar nominee Crazy Heart, died today after a stroke in Waco, TX. He was 81. A friend confirmed his death to our sister publication Rolling Stone.
Although Shaver never had much commercial success as a recording artist, he is widely considered among country’s greatest songwriters. All but one of the tracks on Jennings’ 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes — an early benchmark of the “outlaw country” genre — were written or co-written by Shaver, including its famous title cut. His best-known songs also include “Ain’t No God in Mexico” “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Some Day),” “Georgia on a Fast Train,” “Tramp on Your Street” and “Try and Try Again.

Colombian writer-director Jacques Toulemonde, best known for co-writing that country’s 2016 Oscar nominee “Embrace of the Serpent,” is in France at this week’s Canneseries Digital event to compete with his new short-form series “Camionero” at Canneseries Digital, a short-format web series strand.
Colombia’s Evidencia Films and Vivendi’s Studio Plus produced the series, which is a departure from Toulemonde’s more recent dramatic work. In addition the “Embrace” co-scribe, he also wrote and directed 2015’s “Anna,” his debut feature, which scored nominations at the Goya, Fenix and Platino awards.
“Camionero” follows Abelardo, a Colombian truck driver and recovering drug addict, as he makes one bad decision after another, all in hopes of throwing a quinceañera party for his daughter that will put all the other quinciñeras to shame.
As costs pile up, Abelardo is forced to take a job he had hoped never to do, driving a trailer...

In Robert Duvall’s latest western, Wild Horses, he stars as an old rancher who once kicked his son off his property for being gay and now finds himself at the center of a missing person investigation. In addition to starring, Duvall directed a cast that includes James Franco and Josh Hartnett.
While Duvall was in Austin at SXSW to promote the film, we had a chance to sit down with the Oscar-winner. We talked about why this project spoke to him, working on a small budget, and using actual Texas rangers in the production. Check out the full interview below!
What was it about this movie that made you want to direct it?
Duvall: Well, not a lot in the beginning. The script we got was pretty unshootable. We took it, I took the option. I wanted to do it because I wanted to have a lady ranger in...

I like Robert Duvall. I like interviewing him. I like that he gets to the point. I like that he has probably the most precisely tuned bullshit detector I've ever seen — like, world class. In general, I tend to get along with the ornery guys. Not sure what that says about me. I also know that leaning over a table full of people to engage with Duvall in the middle of a loud after-party following the premiere of "The Judge" is a recipe for disaster. Two hours tucked away in a corner of the Four Seasons? Fantastic. This? A little difficult. He's understandably hard of hearing at 83 years of age, he's just been besieged by one ICM dude-bro after another and the party is winding down. But I'd love to say hello. Maybe he'll say something awesome and I'll tap out a report. The usual We have a mutual friend...

"Under the Skin"
What's It About? That's a very good question. Scarlett Johansson plays a mysterious woman who drives around the Scottish countryside looking for male hitchhikers. To reveal more would be a disservice to the movie... and difficult, since this atmospheric science-fiction film is open to interpretation.
Why We're In: Director Jonathan Glazer's very, very loose adaptation of the Michel Faber novel is disturbing and sexy. Plus, they used hidden cameras to film Johansson luring clueless hitchhikers into her big white van.
Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week
"Scanners" (Criterion)
What's It About? "Scanners" are humans with special telepathic gifts, and the giant corporation ConSec wants to use them for their own nefarious purposes. It becomes a gruesome war of the scanners when one gang decides to go rogue.
Why We're In: David Cronenberg's most famous head-popping horror movie finally gets the Criterion treatment.

Siesta Fest: Aragon’s English Language Debut Incredibly Forced
The one discernible reason to watch Cuban director Emilio Aragon’s English language debut, A Night in Old Mexico, would be to see star Robert Duvall front and center dancing circles around the cringe worthy supporting cast. To be fair, his is the only character granted any kind of depth, as written by screenwriter William D. Wittliff, reteaming with Duvall for the first time since the memorable 1989 television miniseries, “Lonesome Dove.” It’s a project that’s reputed to be nearly 35 years in the making, but the end product can’t quite justify the means with this reunion that feels akin to Duvall’s last stint as director, 2002’s Assassination Tango (an effort that feels far superior in comparison).

Mexico is a lawless place. Well, maybe not lawless as much as it is a place where the laws are ignored. The point is you can get away with pretty much anything down there. When Red Bovie (Robert Duvall) loses his Texas home and ranch to powers outside of his control he decides the trailer park that’s waiting for him can suck it. With the grandson he only just met in tow he heads south for the Mexican border in a spontaneous search for the freedom he craves and the absence of anyone telling him what he can or cannot do. He gets more than he bargained for, but not more than he can handle, when he and young Gally (Jeremy Irvine) find themselves mixed up with a murderous drug runner and a guitar-strumming stripper. A Night in Old Mexico casts Duvall in the familiar role of a cantankerous but fun-loving old man who’s in...

Robert Duvall is reason enough to see almost any movie, and he’s in fine form in a role tailor-made for him by Bill Wittliff, who wrote the teleplay for the unforgettable miniseries Lonesome Dove. That expansive Western saga by Larry McMurtry gave Duvall one of his all-time best roles, as Gus McCrae, and A Night in Old Mexico might be seen as an extension of that character set in modern times. Director Emilio Aragón sets the stage, perfectly and unobtrusively. Red Bovie (Duvall) is a crotchety old man who has just lost his Texas ranch, and with it his dignity and will to live. He is spurred on by the arrival of a now-grown grandson (Jeremy Irvine) he’s never met, the offspring of...

Lonesome Dove writer Bill Wittliff started working on A Night In Old Mexico about 35 years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that the film was finally able to get made. Under the direction of Emilio Aragon and with Robert Duvall in the lead, Wittliff’s story of a rancher forced off his land came to life, and is now gearing up for a release later this spring.
Today, we’ve got a brand new trailer for the film, which sets the stage for the story well. It familiarized us with Red Bovie’s situation and then highlights some of the more action-packed elements that you’ll find here. This isn’t a traditional action flick by any means, but considering its two main characters are an old man and a fairly wimpy young man, I was surprised by how great those sequences are. The trailer also teases off a good chunk of the plot,...

What starts as one last wild adventure for Texas rancher Red Bovie (Robert Duvall) turns into a bit of a western caper as he and his grandson inadvertently end up with a big stack of cash in their Cadillac, and the owner wants it back. Duvall is in perfect salty, grumpy old man mode as he just wants to enjoy booze and women instead of the prospect of retirement in a trailer park. Jeremy Irvine is along for the ride in A Night in Old Mexico from director Emilio Aragon, and Duvall seems to be the best reason to check out this film which played at South by Southwest last month and officially opens this May. Nearly a decade in the making, Robert Duvall had stuck with "A Night In Old Mexico," which reteams him with "Lonesome Dove" scribe Bill Wittliff, for years. And now the result of that patience can be seen by all with the first trailer for the movie now available with just a click below. Co-starring Jeremy Irvine, Jim Parrack and more, and directed by Emilio Aragón, the film tells the story of Texas rancher Red Bovie who teams with his estranged grandson, and hits the road in his Cadillac, for one last wild adventure filled with guns, women and booze before facing retirement and a trailer park. Basically, it's an excuse for Duvall to go full ornery, cranky and salty, and frankly, that's probably as good a reason as any to give this one a shot. "A Night In Old Mexico" opens in theatres and On Demand on May 16th. And...

When it comes to older actors, frequently it comes down to taking bum roles to keep working or waiting for a role-of-a-lifetime opportunity like Bruce Dern in "Nebraska." Robert Duvall has been a happy exception, staying vital and interesting well into senior citizenry (he's now 83), giving memorable performances in "We Own the Night," "Thank You for Smoking," and his acclaimed turn in 2010's "Get Low." Now, Phase 4 Films has released the trailer for the Duvall-starring SXSW film "A Night in Old Mexico," and it looks to be no exception to the actor's inspiring late-career run. "A Night in Old Mexico" stars Duvall as Red, an ornery Texas rancher forced to give up his land and uninterested in going to die quietly in a trailer park like some poor old fool. Among living actors, there are few more talented and more iconic than Robert Duvall. With a resume of memorable performances far too long to list, whenever the Oscar-winner stars in a film, it’s definitely worth your attention. For his latest project, Duvall has teamed up with Spanish director Emilio Aragon to take on A Night In Old Mexico.
Bill Wittliff’s script tells the story of a cantankerous old rancher who, after losing his land, runs off to Mexico with his grandson for one last night of drinking, dancing and women. The plans for a fun night are altered slightly though when, after having a sack of money fall into their possession, they end up with a string of dangerous criminals on their tail in pursuit of the loot.

Robert Duvall likes barbecue. What’s more, he knows the best places for brisket in and around Austin, Texas. I learned this while chatting up the celebrated actor just before going onstage for an hour-long conversation at South by Southwest on Tuesday. My daughter Jessie asked if he could teach her the tango, another of his passions. He said he could show her some moves on the spot, but it would take ten years just to learn how to walk properly. Duvall speaks knowledgeably and enthusiastically about a number of things, but once we were in front of an audience we focused on his remarkably rich career. He was at SXSW to present his latest film, A Night in Old Mexico. This likable,...

An early draft of A Night In Old Mexico was written by Lonesome Dove scribe Bill Wittliff about 35 years ago, and for the last 25 years he had been waiting for the chance to get his film made. Under the direction of Emilio Aragon, the long wait is now over. While I’m not sure how many changes were made to that original script, it’s safe to say that the timeless story feels just as fresh today as it would’ve if it had been made in the ’80s, the ’90s, or any other decade for that matter.

An actor and filmmaker who needs no introduction to anyone who has been watching movies any time over the past 50 years, Oscar-winning actor Robert Duvall came to the SXSW Film Festival with his new movie A Night in Old Mexico , a Texas-based road movie directed by Cuban filmmaker Emilio Aragón based on a screenplay by Lonesome Dove writer William Whitliff. Earlier this week, ComingSoon.net sat down with Robert Duvall for a long, somewhat rambling conversation mostly talking about A Night in Old Mexico and how the project came together, but the actor also talked extensively about The Judge , his new dramedy with Robert Downey Jr. that will be released by Warner Bros. on October 10. It’s no surprise that Robert Duvall is a cantankerous (and charming) old coot in his new film, “A Night in Old Mexico,” helmed by the Spanish director and composer Emilio Aragón. The 83-year-old is still in fine and feisty form as Red Bovie, an old cowboy forced off his land by developers turning the area into sad excuses for “ranchettes.” Rather than live out his days in a trailer home, Red takes off for a Mexican border town with Gally (Jeremy Irvine, “War Horse”), the cowboy-wannabe grandson he has only just met due to a 40-year estrangement with his only son. On their way to Mexico, the pair picks up a sketchy pair of hitchhikers; when they can’t keep their hands off Red’s beer, he ditches them by the roadside, inadvertently keeping the small fortune they’ve stolen off a drug kingpin. As they traverse the underbelly...

I'm really, really glad I liked "A Night in Old Mexico," the engaging comedy-drama that had its North American premiere Monday at SXSW. And not just because the picture -- a Tex-Mex-flavored shaggy-dog story with a touch of Elmore Leonard to its twisty plot -- is a worthy star vehicle for the great Robert Duvall. Another good reason for my being happy: I was committed to doing an interview with Duvall for Cowboys & Indians magazine during the festival. Granted, I chatted with the Oscar-winning screen icon a day before my Variety review appeared on line, at a time when, theoretically, he would not have known what I thought about his movie. And maybe, had I not found it up to snuff, I could have lied if he'd asked me point blank for my appraisal. But here's the thing: I don't think it's possible to lie to this guy. As I...

Exclusive: Phase 4 Films acquired North American rights to A Night In Old Mexico, the Emilio Aragon-directed film that stars Robert Duvall. The film will be released in May, shortly after making its debut at the upcoming South by Southwest Film Festival. Duvall plays a stubborn Texas rancher who’s forced to give up his land and home, and to retire to a trailer park. Instead, he flees in his Cadillac and hits the road with his estranged grandson (Jeremy Irvine) for one last wild adventure filled with guns, women and booze, which sounds like a much better way to go out. Pic is produced by Sunmin Park, J.Ethan Park, Emilio Aragón, Bill Wittliff, Robert Carliner, Robert Duvall, Daniel Ecija and César Vargas. The script was written by Bill Wittliff, whose writing in the adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove still rates as one of the greatest...

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.
