The 2011 animated film Gnomeo and Juliet was a major success when it was released, earning approximately $100 million domestically and a total of $194 million worldwide, prompting a sequel. Now, 2018’s Sherlock Gnomes, starring Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, and James McAvoy, is coming to Paramount+ starting Jan. 1.

The film’s logline reads: “When nearly all of London's garden gnomes go missing, Sherlock Gnomes and his partner, Watson, are called upon to investigate with the help of Gnomeo and Juliet.” In the movie, Depp voices Sherlock Gnomes and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Venom: The Last Dance) voices Watson alongside Blunt’s Juliet and McAvoy’s Gnomeo. Two of the biggest TV companies in Europe, Germany’s Zdf and France Televisions, both public broadcasters, have boarded CGI animated comedy drama “20 Dance Street,” which has been greenlit for production.

France Televisions has acquired the series as a pre-sale. In another deal, Belgium public broadcaster Rtbf has picked up the series for Belgium.

The latest show from Federation Studios’ Cottonwood Media, “20 Dance Street,” is being handled for international distribution by Federation Kids & Family and Zdf Studios. It will be introduced to buyers at both this week’s Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre and Cannes Mipcom trade fair next month. At 26 half-hour episodes, it will be one of the weightiest new European premium animated series hitting these markets.

Historical British comedy Seize Them! lands in UK cinemas in April, and the trailer has landed.

Prolific comedy writer Andy Riley, along with his writing partner Kevin Cecil, has written for numerous comedy shows including Trigger Happy TV, So Graham Norton, Smack the Pony, The Armando Iannucci Shows, Black Books, Harry and Paul, Big Bad World and Veep. They also created and wrote the underrated Matt Berry sitcom Year of The Rabbit for Channel 4.

On the big screen, Cecil and Riley wrote the scripts for Gnomeo And Juliet and the sequel, Sherlock Gnomes.

Now, Riley has written the screenplay for Seize Them! a historical comedy with a huge ensemble cast of familiar faces from the British comedy scene. Originally set for release last year, we’re delighted to see it’s now returned to the cinema release schedule.

Where, when, and how you can watch “Yellowstone” has always been a bit confusing. It normally airs on [Parmaount Network], where it is the most popular show on television. However, the show doesn’t stream on Paramount+, but instead is available on-demand on Peacock. But, for three days starting on May 27, the first three seasons will be available on a free linear channel on Paramount-owned Pluto TV.

Gnomes, a horror movie about killer gnomes, is currently in development with Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy. Levy is also known for his directorial work on recent blockbuster features including the Ryan Reynolds collaborations The Adam Project, Free Guy, and the upcoming Deadpool 3. He hasn't dabbled in horror too often, but he is producing the buzzy upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman.

Per Deadline, Sony is developing a feature adaptation of the Dutch short film Gnomes by Richard Raaphorst and Ruwan Heggelman. There is currently no director attached, but Levy is on hand to produce alongside his 21 Laps cohorts Dan Cohen and Dan Levine. The screenplay is currently being written by Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari, who previously collaborated on the MCU outing Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Director John Stevenson has had a fascinating working trajectory. From his early-career days in the 1980s working as a story artist on Jim Henson productions Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal and The Great Muppet Caper, through to his 2008 Oscar-nominated directorial debut Kung Fu Panda, Stevenson has had his hands in many major studio projects. This makes his latest BAFTA nominated film Middle Watch all the more interesting, as it sees Stevenson return to a more concise and small-scale form of storytelling. The short film, which was made in collaboration with Falmouth University, follows a sailor in the latter days of World War II who finds himself trying to protect his delicate state of mind when he’s thrust in the presence of something extraordinary. Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?

Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

Exclusive: We hear that Officer Exchange, a big action comedy project, just sold to Amazon Studios. Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad star John Cena is starring in a script by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner. The project is currently in development.

Cena will play Shepard “Shep,” a wrecking ball of a cop who teams up with an Indian police officer to take down a diamond smuggling ring in India.

Peacemaker producers EP Peter Safran and producer John Rickard of The Safran Company are producing the project for Amazon. Cena is executive producing.

Zazove and Turner wrote the Netflix Happy Madison comedy movie The Out-Law which is in post production, that pic starring Pierce Brosnan, Michael Rooker, Adam Devine and Lil Rel Howery. Zazove wrote Paramount’s Sherlock Gnomes.

Peacock has released the trailer for My Son, a remake of the 2017 French movie of the same name, starring James McAvoy and Claire Foy. Christian Carion, who directed the original movie, directs this remake as well using a screenplay he co-wrote with Laure Irrmann. That is to say, the characters not played by McAvoy were given a script, as the actor had to improvise his entire performance. Ahead of the movie's premiere on Peacock this month, you can check out the brand new trailer below.

Like the French version of the movie, My Son follows James McAvoy as a man lost without answers. He was not given a screenplay or told any dialogue he had to say, nor did he know how the story would end. In character, McAvoy had to improvise his performance from start to finish, playing off of the other actors who are familiar with the script and the story.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family has announced Acme Night, a block of programming that parents and kids can watch together each Sunday. It begins with Shazam on September 19 on Cartoon Network. Subsequent Sundays at 6 p.m. Et/Pt the network will air a succession of family friendly blockbusters, including Man of Steel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sherlock Gnomes, Scoob! and Detective Pikachu.

“In the world of Acme anything, and I do mean anything, is possible,” said Tom Ascheim, President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics in a statement. “We know families want to spend time together, so we’ve created a destination for multigenerational stories that pull families together through the power of imagination.”

Archewell Productions, the Netflix-based shingle launched by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, is getting into the animation business. Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, is the creator behind “Pearl,” described as a “family series that centers on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl, who is inspired by a variety of influential women from history.”

Credited as The Duchess of Sussex in the release, Markle will executive produce “Pearl” (which is a working title) with David Furnish, Carolyn Soper, Liz Garbus, and Dan Cogan. Amanda Rynda has been tapped as showrunner and executive producer.

“Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges,” Markle said in a statement. “I’m thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix, and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history.

A frothy, all-ages mystery caper hardly seems like the type of movie that would find itself the subject of legal action, but the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have filed a lawsuit against Netflix’s Enola Holmes regardless. While the majority of Sherlock Holmes stories are in the public domain and can thusly be adapted by anyone any way they see fit, a handful of tales remain with the author’s estate, and they’ve decided that Henry Cavill’s take on the literary icon is far too emotional for their liking.

Kelly Asbury, an animator who directed Oscar-nominated films such as “Shrek 2” and “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” has died. He was 60.

Asbury died Friday morning in Los Angeles following a long battle with abdominal cancer, a representative for Asbury, Nancy Newhouse Porter, told Variety.

Asbury, who started his career at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1983, directed five animated feature films during his career: “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” which was released in 2002; “Shrek 2″ in 2004, which he co-directed with Conrad Vernon; 2011’s “Gnomeo & Juliet”; 2017’s “Smurfs: The Lost Village”; and his final directorial effort was 2019’s “Ugly Dolls,” which starred Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monáe, Blake Shelton and Pitbull.

His other work includes credits on “The Little Mermaid,” Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “The Prince of Egypt,” “Chicken Run,” “Shrek,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Frozen” and “Sherlock Gnomes.”

Kelly Asbury, an animation writer-director and voice actor whose credits include Shrek 2, Smurfs: The Lost Village and Beauty and the Beast, died today after battling cancer for several years. He was 60. His rep Nancy Newhouse Porter of Newhouse Porter Hubbard confirmed the news to Deadline.

“He was one of the most admired and beloved people in the industry,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking for everyone.”

A three-time Annie Awards nominee for helming 2004’s Shrek 2 and writing and directing 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet, Asbury also was nommed twice by the Cannes Film Festival: He was up for the Palme d’Or for Shrek 2 and the Camera d’Or for best debut feature for 2002’s Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

His also directed last year’s UglyDolls, and his writing credits included co-penning the story for Disney’s 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast.

“Captain Marvel” continued its dominance with a $69 million second weekend. The 55 percent second weekend drop is on par with the most recent “Avengers” and “Thor” entries; by contrast, “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” each dropped about 44 percent in their second outings.

Of all moviegoers this week, about half went to see “Captain Marvel.” That left the total gross, which will end up somewhat above $140 million, about $10 million above the same weekend last year. That’s two up weekends in a row after a long string of inferior three-day totals. That brings the year-to-date drop to just under 19 percent, with a total take lagging by about $460 million from where things stood in 2018.

With a $153 million opening domestically and $455 million worldwide, “Captain Marvel” is certain to be one of the fastest films to gross $1 billion at the box office. But exactly how fast will depend on whether it can hold as well in its second weekend as inclusive superhero films like “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther.”

While both of those films had very different openings than “Captain Marvel” — “Wonder Woman” opened to $103 million while “Black Panther” opened to $202 million — both notably kept their second weekend drop-offs below 50 percent. A lifelong fan of Sherlock Holmes, director John Stevenson had a set of specific conditions for taking on the Paramount animated sequel, Sherlock Gnomes. Coming off Kelly Asbury’s 2011 feature Gnomeo & Juliet, the follow-up would retain key elements—namely, a band of charming garden sculptures, who get into a series of comedic misadventures. At the same time, Stevenson’s take wouldn’t be overly goofy or broad. Even with the massive success of John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” and the latest installment of Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible” series, Paramount had a mostly flat 2018 at the box office.

Though it crawled up a spot from 2017 to take sixth place in market share, pulling in just over $700 million in domestic box office to date, the Viacom-owned studio still lagged well ahead the five other majors and showed little sign it would reclaim the No. 1 spot it held as recently as 2011.

“It’s a year where they have to take stock and look forward to creating more franchises like ‘Mission: Impossible’ as well as working with filmmakers like John Krasinksi to come up with unexpected hits like ‘A Quiet Place’ that could be hugely profitable for the studio,” comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said.
