The weekend of October 14th to 16th marked the inaugural year of the (annual) Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. The festival hosted various events around the Williamsburg neighborhood of New York City’s largest borough, including an art show, a reading by author Grady Hendrix, and film screenings. The festival was so successful that eighteen of twenty-two events were completely sold out.
One film that had its world premiere at Bhff was Child Eater (2016), a joint Icelandic/USA production. The film takes an urban legend and brings it frighteningly to life. Directed by Erlingur Ottar Thoroddsen, the film follows Helen (Cait Bliss) while she babysits Lucas. Lucas and his dad are new to the area but know the history of the house. It once belonged to a local farmer who kidnapped, tortured, and then killed children, eating their eyes in the belief that it would save his own vision.

Like a Halloween moon that glistens deviously once a year, the first-ever Brooklyn Horror Film Festival came, saw and conquered New York City this past weekend. It was a heartwarming start for a little festival that blew up bigger than founder Justin Timms could have ever imagined, after a whopping 18 out of 22 screenings/events played to sold-out crowds. Not only did Erlingur Thoroddsen’s closing-night World Premiere of Child Eater sell out its first screening at Bushwick’s Syndicated Bar + Theater + Kitchen, but a late-night screening had to be scheduled based solely on demand (that too sold out). Not a bad start for some horror lovers who had nothing but a dream and the determination to succeed.
Trends in horror have recently embraced more arthouse, indie genre films, and this year’s Brooklyn Horror Film Festival was a perfect example of current standards. Timms’ opening night film, Mattie Do’s...

This month, one of our contributors, Perri Nemiroff, embarks on the exiciting and daunting journey of making an independent feature-length horror film. When she approached me about perhaps doing a production journal - from the producer's angle - I thought it would appeal a great deal for you Shock readers out there looking to get a film off of the ground. That said, welcome to her first installment on the making of Child Eater, a feature based on the short film which debuted at SXSW in 2013.

I've got a genuinely scary short horror film for you to watch today called Child Eater. The intense story is set around a local legend of a terrifying monster who eats children's eyes to keep from going blind. It also involves a pregnant babysitter and a missing local kid. Child Eater was written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen, and the team that put it together are looking to turn it into a feature-length film. If you like what you see please head on over to the Kickstarter campaign that they launched. Here's a more detailed description of the story:
Child Eater takes place over the course of one very long night. Helen isn't thrilled about babysitting little Lucas and it certainly doesn't make it any easier that he's convinced he hears breathing coming from his closet. But it's just his imagination, right?
When Helen goes upstairs to check on Lucas late at night,...

Perri Nemiroff writes for Movies.com, but she also produced a short film screening at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival. Here she writes about her expectations before the screening, and will return later to tell us what happened after. Before Our short film Child Eater plays to an adoring crowd, we get up and charm the audience further during our Q&A, someone from Blumhouse Productions approaches us post screening with interest in the feature version and Boom! – Child Eater the feature gets a green light. Hey, a girl can dream, right? Just over a month ago I was shocked and overjoyed to find out my Columbia University non-thesis short Child Eater was accepted into SXSW and was set to play in the Midnight Shorts program. We’d already gotten a...

Set to screen on Saturday, March 9 at SXSW, Child Eater takes off from the time-honored scenario of a little boy who believes the bogeyman is lurking in his closet—and this time, he’s right. Cait Bliss stars as Helen, a babysitter who first tries to assuage the fears of little Lucas (Cameron Ocasio, the “BBQ Boy” from one of Sinister’s Super-8 films), and then must fight to protect him from the Child Eater. Written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and produced by Perri Nemiroff, Child Eater also stars Dan Reiss as Helen’s boyfriend Tom and Boomer Tibbs as Robert Bowery, a.k.a. the malevolent titular spirit.
“Child Eater is our non-thesis film for our Mfa degrees from Columbia University,” Nemiroff explains. The program requires that students on the producing track take a course in feature-film development; we’re supposed to find a script that another student...

Another day, another batch of ooey, gooey shorts to bring you guys from the New York City Horror Film Festival! Have no worries, because the quality was still on kick-ass display, showcasing some bright up and coming horror talent. There’s really no point in wasting time writing an introduction though, let’s just jump to the films!
Rotting Hill
Director: James Cunningham
Ah, love in the time of zombies. Always a romantic and, er, gory tale of spellbound hearts and spending an eternity together with “the one.” Rotting Hill is a cute little love story, and yes I just said cute, about two undead lovers munching their way through the apocalypse. There’s some really cool effects on display and a few good kills, even though I’m not sure why zombies are killing other zombies (hate crime?), but hell, it’s a fun little romp none the less.
