You may know him as the hilarious ex-con-turned-nurse from The Mindy Project, or from his long stint on MADtv. Now, comedic actor Ike Barinholtz has turned his attention to satire, playing a film executive in the new Apple TV+ comedy series The Studio, which follows a struggling Hollywood movie studio and its newly appointed head of film production (Seth Rogen) and features an epic list of guest stars that includes Martin Scorsese, Bryan Cranston, Steve Buscemi, Ron Howard, and more. The Chicago native recently chatted with us about his role and answered questions about the show. The Studio is different than some of the shows you’ve done. How did you get involved with the show? Ike Barinholtz: Many, many years ago, I was talking to Seth Rogen, and he was like, “Hey, we’re writing a show about Hollywood. There’s a part that we’re writing for you.

No one will mistake The Bondsman for the next Supernatural, but it’s the closest we’ve gotten in a while—maybe even the most enjoyable. The new Kevin Bacon series embraces an engaging monster-of-the-week format, featuring demons running amok and serving up a satisfying blend of horror and thriller fun.
It also helps that Kevin Bacon leads the show with his signature laid-back charm and effortless charisma, making him instantly watchable. While The Bondsman takes a few episodes to find its groove, it ultimately becomes a monster mash of thrills, chills, and howls, keeping the story fresh and entertaining for viewers.

There was a time not so long ago when a guest spot on "Law & Order" was a rite of passage for any up-and-coming actor. You could hardly find an actor in the greater New York metropolitan area who didn't have a credit on the popular procedural to their name. Honestly, it makes sense why it would serve as such a great launching pad: Each episode required an entirely new cast of supporting players, often of all ages and backgrounds, creating lots of opportunities for aspiring actors to get some screen time.
While "Law & Order" often had costar roles available, who were basically the leads for that given week, often getting the meatiest material, there were also plenty of "under-five" parts for newbies to cut their teeth on. Like the guy who gets questioned while unloading boxes down at the pier, that kind of thing. So obviously, over the...

But now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them,” Rogen’s character, Matt Remick, says in the show’s sharp pilot episode (streaming now). Throughout the 10 episodes, Remick tries to balance his love for movies with the realities of his position,...

This week marks the 20th anniversary of The Office, the groundbreaking NBC sitcom that redefined workplace comedy and launched the careers of several cast members. Since the show’s debut on March 24, 2005, many of its stars have gone on to successful careers in television and film, earning critical acclaim and industry recognition — but the ensemble surprisingly did not have the greatest success when it came to Emmy Awards.
Leading man Steve Carell starred as Michael Scott, the endearingly incompetent regional manager of the Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin. He received six Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Actor during his time on The Office and four Best Comedy Series nominations as part of the show’s creative team, which included creator Greg Daniels, who developed the series from the original U.K. version created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The hilarious Ike Barinholtz, who has starred in shows like The Mindy Project and The Afterparty, recently guested on David Spade and Dana Carvey’s Fly on the Wall podcast. In addition to discussing his time as a Mad TV cast member and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Barinholtz also revealed that he once had a memorable encounter with Farley.

It's one of the biggest debates in TV right now: What’s a comedy?
While the argument rages on, there were plenty of laughs when a trio of comedy showrunners — St. Denis Medical’s Eric Ledgin, Laid’s Nahnatchka Khan, and The Four Seasons’ Lang Fisher — took the stage at SXSW’s Film and TV Music Festival for a panel titled “Funny Af Comedy Showrunners,” moderated by Gold Derby’s editor-in-chief.
“If the show is making you laugh, I guess it’s a comedy,” says Ledgin. “I don’t know that the categorization matters to me. I thought Succession was one of the funniest shows on television.”
Khan agrees that dramas can offer plenty of laughs. “Sopranos was very funny, too,” she says. “The best comedy has a lot of drama. But I do appreciate actual jokes.”
Agrees Fisher, “I wish there were more super funny, really silly shows,” she says.

David Stassen might have been cosmically intended to work on Running Point. The showrunner, who produces and writes the basketball comedy with longtime collaborators Ike Barinholtz and Mindy Kaling, explains as much in front of a prominently placed box of Wheaties on his bookcase during a February Zoom. “I’m a huge Chicago basketball fan,” says Stassen, who grew in the city with Barinholtz. “That is the 1991 Bulls — original and unopened.”
The mummified “Breakfast of Champions” adds to Stassen’s cred on Netflix’s instantly renewed Kate Hudson vehicle, though not as much as the string of projects he’s made with his producing partner. After meeting at summer camp and eventually attending high school together — and slight detour for Stassen at ESPN’s Washington, D.C., studio — he and Barinholtz got their big break in the writers room for The Mindy Project. Korean-American actor Steve Park guest-starred on Seasons 2 and 3 of Friends and is looking back on what he has described as “an extremely painful experience” for him.
During a recent appearance on the “Pod Meets World” podcast, Park recalled an uncomfortable environment on set for Asian actors.
“It was at the time, I felt it was kind of a toxic environment,” Park said. “James Hong was the actor who was also on the episode with me, and [the assistant director] was calling him to the set and you know, essentially saying, ‘Where the fuck is the Oriental guy? Get the Oriental guy.’”
He continued, “This is bigger than this show. This isn’t the first time that this happened, you know, but this is the environment where this is business as usual in Hollywood in 1997, I guess it was. And nobody felt the need to correct this or say anything about it. So this is normal behavior.

Kevin Bacon has been plugging away in movies since making his big-screen debut in 1978's highly problematic comedy classic "National Lampoon's Animal House," and has been in so many different kinds of films over the last 47 years that there's a trivia game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, that essentially holds him as the center of the cinema universe. While you can't make as many movies as Bacon has without appearing in more than a few stinkers, I don't think I've ever seen the man give a poor performance. He's been believable as heroes, villains, creeps and milquetoasts, and, despite getting cast in numerous Oscar contenders, has never competed for an Academy Award himself. That's gotta change.
The only bad thing I can say about his most recent project, "The Bondsman," is that it won't get him off the Oscar schneid. That's because it's a streaming horror series for Amazon Prime...

Kevin Bacon has been to hell and back… and he’s taking a few demons back with him.
Prime Video has released the official trailer for The Bondsman, a new horror-comedy series from Blumhouse Television that premieres all eight episodes on Thursday, April 3. In the trailer, which you can watch above, Bacon stars as Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who ends up getting murdered on the job. The next thing he knows, he’s back on Earth, where he’s informed he’s been resurrected so he can “hunt demons for the Devil.” Piece of cake, right?

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot details from the Netflix series “Running Point,” which is now streaming.
Kate Hudson has always been a sports fan, and growing up between California and Colorado meant cheering for the Denver Broncos, the Los Angeles Kings and, of course, the L.A. Lakers. As a teenager, Hudson would go to Kings games with her parents, who introduced her to Jeanie Buss, the then 30-something executive who managed the Forum, where the hockey team played.
“Kate would just, like, shadow me,” Buss recalls. “I’d take her around the building give her a tour, explain what the Forum Club was, and how we operated the tickets and the box office.”
Hudson, sitting next to her, jumps in eagerly: “I was also a little naughty, so I would like to sneak into places. Jeanie kept me… she was like ‘You stay here.’”

It’s no news to her avid fans, but to the average Netflix viewer, “Running Point” contains a surprise: Mindy Kaling loves basketball.
The producing powerhouse behind “The Office” and “The Mindy Project” and more recently “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and Netflix’s own “Never Have I Ever” takes on the power and politics of the NBA with her new series — a fascination that dates back to her childhood.
“When [my dad] emigrated here, one of the ways that he felt like he could become better attuned to American culture was to get really into professional sports,” Kaling told IndieWire ahead of the show’s premiere. “He fell in love with basketball, and we were kind of forced to watch the Boston Celtics my entire childhood, until we fell in love with it too. It was the heyday of Larry Bird, the Celtics versus the Lakers, that dynasty.”

Running Point made its debut on Netflix on Feb. 27, and the series starring Kate Hudson was an immediate slam dunk. The actress and singer stars in the comedy from Mindy Kaling as a reformed party girl who takes over the family business as its president. That business? The most lucrative professional men's basketball team in Los Angeles. No pressure at all for a woman!
On top of an incredible creative team behind the scenes, including Kaling's hilarious frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen, Running Point features an exquisite ensemble cast that leans on the unique talents of Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Justin Theroux, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and so many more.
Following the non-stop laughs throughout the near-perfect first season, the 10-episode comedy layup concludes with a nail-biting season finale. With Isla having taken the Waves to the playoffs against great odds, her personal life also takes...

Kate Hudson stole the show in 2022’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story,” her last major comedic role. Hudson played a scandal-ridden fashion designer, skewering the shallow costumes a certain kind of rich social justice influencer wears with giddy, screwball aplomb. The role, functioning as a kind of comeback for Hudson, makes one excited for her next comedic leading role in Netflix’s TV series “Running Point,” especially knowing it comes from comedy vets Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen (who all collaborated on “The Mindy Project”).
But in practice, “Running Point” does not let Hudson discover the specificities and eccentricities so joyfully gleaned in her previous work. The 10-episode first season is a flattening, often maddening watch, only occasionally rising above generic familiarities to deliver something trenchant or specific about its otherwise generically dysfunctional family.

The new sitcom Running Point, which premieres on Netflix today, has several creators. Elaine Ko spent years writing Modern Family. Ike Barinholtz is a prolific character actor on everything from Blockers to The White House Plumbers, not to mention a Celebrity Jeopardy! champion. David Stassen is a writer and director whose credits include History of the World: Part II. But the fourth creator — Mindy Kaling — is the only one who’s parlayed her work writing on and co-starring in The Office into becoming a brand. Now, she’s the mogul behind Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and The Mindy Project. She’s the social media maven with a signature swimsuit line; and if she hasn’t quite reached mononym status yet, the brand-new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame gets her just a little closer.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.
However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.
“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

Make some way for Netflix! The streaming service is dribbling down the court and shooting nothing but straight buckets with its latest original comedy series. Kate Hudson might be best known for her romantic comedies on the big screen, but the Oscar-nominated movie star is tackling her first leading role in a comedy series with Netflix's new sitcom Running Point.
She's not the only big name attached to the series. There are plenty more familiar faces in the main and supporting cast, but behind the scene, there's an even bigger name. None other than The Office and The Mindy Project (not to mention Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls) mastermind Mindy Kaling co-created the series, which she also writes and executive produces.

If you're a fan of Mindy Kaling and are a Netflix subscriber, there's a bit of good and bad news for you going into the end of February 2025. No, her modern classic teen comedy Never Have I Ever isn't going anywhere (thankfully), but the star's eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project will be departing Netflix by the end of the month. Grab a bear claw and lie on the floor in distress!
As a comedy series that originally aired on Fox, then moved to Hulu as an original when the streamer saved it from cancellation, and was produced by NBCUniversal, it was surprising when the underrated workplace rom-com landed on Netflix back in January 2023. It was a pleasant surprise nonetheless as lots of new viewers had the chance to discover the series.

2025 is in full swing, and with March just around the corner, it’s time for you to look ahead at the movies and series scheduled to depart Netflix throughout the month of March. The biggest notable TV series leaving is The Mindy Project, while hit films like Scooby-Doo and Love Again, among others, are also set to depart.
As always, Netflix’s library is constantly evolving. That means new titles are always on the way, but because Netflix licenses titles from big distributors, they’re not always on Netflix forever. When this license (or rental period) comes to an end, the movie or series leaves Netflix.
Note: This list will be constantly updated throughout February as we learn of more series and movies set to leave (typically 30 days before their departure). In the last few weeks of the month, Netflix...

Saying goodbye is always hard, especially when we might be watching some of our favorite movies or series leaving Netflix. Maybe we can find what is left on some other streamer, but who wants to take the time to do that? Maybe you can even buy the DVDs of these shows if you still have a DVD player.
The issue with this week is that it is the end of the month so there are a lot of things leaving our favorite streamer. Out with the old, and in with a bunch of new stuff that we will love. Such is the way of the streaming world.
In the case of the excellent Brooklyn Nine-Nine, if you haven't yet started watching the series, but want to, you have just a few days left to watch the first and second seasons. It is one of the many series to leave on...

If there's one thing Mindy Kaling's going to do, it's the same thing she's been doing for 20 years and counting since debuting on The Office: Make us laugh. The multi-hyphenate actress, writer, and producer has multiple hit comedy series under her belt, including her eponymous sitcom The Mindy Project and the upcoming Netflix original Running Point starring Kate Hudson.

Mindy Kaling is getting another TV show up and running!
The 45-year-old actress, writer and producer has created new comedy Not Suitable for Work, and it has been picked up to series at Hulu, according to Variety.
The exciting news was announced on Tuesday (February 18), the same day she received her very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
Keep reading to find out more…
