In recent years Norway has been cranking out some fantastic genre films – Troll Hunter, Dead Snow and its sequel, Rare Exports, Thale and the Cold Prey series. Speaking of the latter, director Roar Uthaug, the man behind the three Cold Prey movies, turned his hand from the horrors of the slasher movie to the horrors of nature with The Wave, a disaster movie of real-life proportions – which screened back in February 2016 at Glasgow Frightfest and was followed by a home entertainment release, here in the UK, in August of the same year.

Well now comes The Quake, a follow-up to that film which sees The Wave star Kristoffer Joner return as geologist Kristian Eikjord, this time under the direction of John Andreas Andersen, who worked as a cinematographer on such films as King of Devil’s Island and the Jo Nesbo adaptation Headhunters.

In 1904 an earthquake with a 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale shook Oslo.

Now that the first season of “Made in Mosjøen” is complete, Aleksander Nordaas has edited his web series into a feature film — and has made the story of a gun made out a fish available for free. Watch a trailer for “Mosjøen,” which follows the writer/director’s film “Thale,” below.

“Releasing ‘Made in Mosjøen’ for free is not me giving into piracy and throwing more traditional release models overboard,” he told Empire of the release strategy. “As this is my personal project, it’s a chance for me to actually try to play a bit of ball with the filesharers and gain some audience insight, which I believe is vital knowledge to be able to survive as a filmmaker in the rapid evolving market. As far as I’m concerned, not being flexible means eventually breaking.

Screen reports on the 19 project pitches, including animations, family fare and a Daniel Dencik drama.

The Nordic Co-Production And Finance Market at Haugesund’s New Nordic Films event hosted its project pitches today (August 24).

They included Daniel Dencik’s drama about a disintegrating relationship 1000 R.I.P.; a children’s animation from Norway’s Aleksander Nordaas, the director of festival hit Thale; Icelandic director Marteinn Thorsson’s new psychological thriller; Martin Skovbjerg’s debut feature produced by hot new Danish outfit Snowglobe (who won Locarno’s Golden Leopard with Godless); and a new family film, hand drawn 2D animated Amundsen & Nobile.

Projects from Georgia, Italy and Canada were also included in the 19-strong line-up.

The producers behind a smash Nordic noir book trilogy have lined up a production company and signed a Us publishing deal with giant Random House’s Crown Books imprint.

Zero Gravity Management in association with Elina Ahlback Agency will produce an English-language adaptation of Finnish author Salla Simukka’s [pictured] Snow White Trilogy, which has sold in more than 52 territories including the Us.

Producer Gudrun Giddings (Thale, Banshee Chapter) brokered the film production deal on behalf of Elina Ahlback Agency with Eric Williams on behalf of Zero Gravity.

Williams joins Giddings on the franchise as producer, alongside Simukka, whose books follow the adventures of 17-year-old Lumikki Andersson as she encounters money-launderers, religious cults and a stalker.

Elina Ahlback of Elina Ahlback Agency negotiated the publishing deal with Phoebe Yeh, vice-president, publisher, Crown Books/Random House.

Norwegian writer/director Aleksander Nordaas, best known internationally for 2012’s Thale, has launched a 19-episode webseries entitled Made In Mosjoen.

The English-language series is available for free at http://www.madeinmosjoen.com.

Nordaas runs Norway’s Yesbox Productoins alongside Screen 2015 Future Leader Bendik Stronstad. Their film Thale sold to more than 50 countries and showed at festivals including Toronto.

As with supernatural thriller Thale, the story from the webseries invents a mythical creature, and the director joked that it also included “a fishgun, a mummified cat, and some special cheese.”

Clearly thanks to its "breakout" status in Kim Newman's Video Dungeon in the current issue of Empire , the quietly wonderful Norwegian fantasy Thale has just earned itself a sequel. Original writer/director Aleksander Nordaas remains at the helm for more folkloric Scandinavian scares.The original film concerns the titular forest sprite (tah-lay), who is one of the Huldra: siren-like creatures from Nordic myth. The Huldras' general modus operandi is to lure men to their deaths by sitting naked under waterfalls, but Thale has been captured for study by a well-meaning human guardian and imprisoned for some years. An English language sequel to Thale is coming, but before you despair, let it be known that the original writer and director, Aleksander Nordaas, is returning to the material that put him on the filmmaking map. He will be writing and directing the sequel, with Yesbox Productions and Epic Pictures Group teaming together.

It was back in October of 2011 while we awaited the premiere of Norwegian indie Thale that we first caught wind of an upcoming animated feature from director Aleksander Nordaas. Like Thale, Morkel The Moss Monster would present a revisionist spin on traditional nordic folktale creatures. A jolty combination of comedy, detective fancy and myth makes Thale a fun testament to Norwegian folklore. To be fair, “fun” is not entirely what the movie is going for; it teeters weirdly between comedy and horror without ever achieving frightfulness and fills in lots of low-key screen time wherein little happens and dialogue occurs slowly and wryly. But it’s worth a watch if only for the bizarre embodiment of the title character (Silje Reinåmo), a spidery-lashed, darting-eyed folk creature kept in captivity.

On Blu-ray and DVD today after a limited theatrical run, Thale follows two crime scene cleaners who discover a beautiful, tailed female creature known as a huldra locked away in a cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her story, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together: She's been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface.

We recently caught up with writer/director Aleksander Nordaas to chat about this thriller based on ancient Norwegian folklore. And it only added to the excitement that he called us from the land of Thale itself. Here is our conversation.

Writer/director Aleksander Nordaas' modern dark fairy tale Thale is playing now in limited theaters courtesy of XLRator Media. The film follows two crime scene cleaners who happen upon a mythical creature known as the Huldra, which they discover locked away inside a concealed cellar on their latest job.

Once she’s released, the mysteries of both this creature and why she’s been hidden away for all these years are slowly revealed.

Recently Dread Central has the opportunity to chat with Nordaas about the fairy tales that inspired Thale, his tumultuous experiences working on the project over the course of three years which was a labor of love for all involved, and whether or not he’s planning to revisit this world in the future.

Dread Central : I really enjoyed the story you crafted here; how much of Thale was based on actual folklore?

There’s usually a handshake agreement made by audiences with genre filmmakers eager to make an impression: If your first act is fantastical, intriguing and mysterious, then don’t botch it with an overly technical, low-imagination third act explanation. This sort of misstep has dogged big budget mishaps like “Prometheus” and even smaller, lovelier films like Neil Jordan’s almost-but-not-quite “Ondine,” and it manifests itself again in the meme-worthy Norwegian chiller “Thale.” Right off the bat, we’re introduced to two work-a-day stooges, Elvis (Erlend Nervold) and Leo (Jon Sigve Skard), cleaning out an abandoned house as employees of what we learn is called No Shit Cleaning Services. Given we have absolutely zero context, we’re left to believe that either these are highly trained niche professionals, or they’re working on something a bit more unusual than what we’d expect from a “cleaning service” assigned to an abandoned house.

The success of the Norwegian hit Trollhunter has opened doors for other Norwegian films and filmmakers to get the spotlight in America and beyond. This luck has introduced us to Thale, a horror film steeped in Norwegian folklore, and featuring the creature huldra. Thale is about two crime scene cleaners who stumble upon a mythical, tailed female creature in a cellar who has been held captive for many years. And that’s just the beginning. Thale is set for a limited theatrical release this Friday, April 5th, and is out on VOD now.

I had the good fortunate to be able to chat with the writer-director-cinematographer-editor of the film, Aleksander Nordaas. We chatted about his origins, the inspiration from the film and the folklore that inspired it, the huldra design, his fine actors, and what’s on the horizon for the up and comer. Read on.

Following on from the rather wonderful Norwegian modern fairy tale Troll Hunter, now we have another attempt at updating fairy-tale and folklore tropes for the modern age with Thale.

I would dispel any comparisons with that movie from your mind though before watching Thale because it’s very much a different film. Whereas Troll Hunter was all about the thrill and the action, Thale is a slow burn movie reminiscent of Vincenzo Natali’s underrated Splice from a few years ago.

Thale starts off with crime scene cleaners Elvis (Erlend Nervold) and Leo (Jon Sigve Skard) cleaning an especially bloody cabin in the forest. In the basement they find what seems like a lab/life support set up and find a young woman named Thale (Silje Reinamo) living under some kind of liquid in a bathtub. Through the research records they find as well as tapes left by the unfortunate...

★★★☆☆ An opening shot of a cassette-recorder playing and the screams of a woman give an instant suggestion that Aleksander Nordaas' sophomore feature, Thale (2012), will be venturing into the territory of torture porn. Much like fellow Norwegian creature-feature Trollhunter (Trolljegeren, 2010), however, it subverts its immediate genre trappings to give audiences something a little more unique. With a pair of kind-hearted characters and a lack of explicit horror, the film has a good-natured centre and is concerned with the oppression of secrets - both intimate and more expansive - more than tension or gore.

The new fantasy horror mystery ‘Thale,’ which was directed by Aleksander Nordaas, was released on VOD today by XLrator Media. The film, which will hit theaters on Apirl 5, stars Morten Andresen, Erlend Nervold, Jon Sigve Skard and Silje Reinamo in the title role. Alrighty, kids! Time for another glimpse of the hottest new creature on the block (and we mean that), Thale, in this exclusive clip that we came across that was originally obscured by trees. Well, not really, but we love theatrics.

The film arrives from Xlrator Media on VOD March 21st with a limited theatrical run on April 5th and a Blu-ray/DVD release on April 23rd.

With stunning effects, lush scenery, strong performances and an inventive screenplay, André Øvredal’s second feature was one of the strangest and strongest horror movies of 2010. Thale walks the same path, dealing in mythical creatures, Norwegian folklore, a sprinkling of dark comedy and the promise of horror, but loses its footing when it comes to quality entertainment. Two cleaners, one cabin and an encounter with a mythical creature called Thale, that’s what you get with this disappointingly dreary Scandinavian creature feature. Leo (Jon Sigve Skard) and Elvis (Erlend Nervold) are crime scene cleaners, not that Elvis really has the stomach for it anymore. On their latest job they head down to the basement and discover Thale (Silje Reinåmo), unquestionably supernatural and mostly naked. It’s not long before Leo and Elvis believe they’ve discovered a real life huldra.

Last year I had the pleasure of seeing Thale at the Seattle International Film Festival. It’s a Norwegian supernatural thriller, with some chilling moments and imagery, and it certainly deserves a wider audience. That time has come, with Thale coming on VOD on March 21st, in theaters on April 5th, 2013, and on DVD April 23rd.

As well, Thale has been touring the film festival circuit, with a recent appearance at the Victoria International Film Festival. This title now has a release date set for Spring. Thale (Tail), the Norwegian-made horror fantasy about a pair of crime-scene cleaners at a remote woodland cabin who stumble across a captive mute woman sporting a tail, made quite an impact last year when it made the festival rounds, including Screamfest, Tiff and South by Southwest. Aleksander Nordaas’ Norwegian indie is a pretty interesting concept. Thale takes an ancient Norse tale and updates it around two friends who happen upon a supernatural creature while cleaning up a bucket of blood in a cabin in the woods.

The creature is known as a Huldra, a seductive and stunningly beautiful woman-beast who lives deep in the Scandinavian forest, prancing around naked, with a tail. Some of the folklore frames her as a kind creature who watches over woodsmen while they sleep. Other stories paint her in a slightly more demonic vein, luring men into the woods to have sex with them and killing the ones who don’t satisfy. I think we can guess which kind of Huldra we’ll be seeing in Hale.

She is also psychic. Lady really has it all.

Another film we've been talking about for a while now has landed Us distribution during the still going Toronto International Film Festival (it ends Sunday, September 16th): Thale will be released Stateside early next year by XLrator Media.
