Robert Downey Jr. had a crazy idea for Sherlock Holmes 3—he wanted Johnny Depp to star in the sequel. But Hollywood had other plans. At the time, Depp was caught in a high-profile legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. He claimed the controversy cost him a massive payday for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Downey, a longtime friend, reportedly wanted to help by bringing Depp into the Sherlock Holmes universe (via Cheat Sheet). A heartwarming gesture, sure, but also an impossible one. First, Warner Bros. had already distanced itself from Depp. The studio controlled the Sherlock Holmes films and had recently removed Depp from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Given that decision, adding him to another major franchise seemed unlikely.

Then, there was the problem of Sherlock Holmes 3 itself. The sequel had been stuck in limbo for years.

Village Roadshow has officially filed for bankruptcy. Village Roadshow Entertainment Group is a production company whose film division, Village Roadshow Pictures, was founded in 1989. The Australian media company Village Roadshow also holds a 3% stake in the company. The American producer's first ever film was The Delinquents, a 1989 release that was distributed by Warner Bros. Since then, the company has gone on to produce major films including The Matrix, Miss Congeniality, Zoolander, Ocean's Eleven, Happy Feet, Joker, and more recently, Wonka.

Per Variety, Village Roadshow has now filed for bankruptcy. The company officially filed for Company 11 in Delaware on Monday, March 17. Court documents cite $223.8 million in asset-backed secured notes and $163.1 million in senior secured debt. Another day, another Hollywood music biopic. Mere weeks after the release of Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic in which Williams is presented as a CGI monkey, Variety reports that there’s not one but two projects about Roy Orbison in the works.

Orbison’s family has partnered up with Compelling Pictures for a feature film as well as a documentary about the singer’s life.

The film is tentatively titled You Got It, after one of Orbison’s hit songs, and the team behind the camera know a thing or two about making music biopics. The film is being produced by Denis O’Sullivan, who worked on Bohemian Rhapsody, and Jeff Kalligheri, who produced the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

The British actor brings a very strong female character to television, and even though Yellowstone Season 5 has wrapped, Beth and Rip's story will continue in their own spinoff series.

While the Sheridan show may be the one that gave Reilly the push to global fandom, the actor had starred in a few major films before entering the Yellowstone universe. Notably, she was once in two of Guy Ritchie's films, starring alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. What's even more notable is that she stole the show from the two lead stars.

In an interview promoting Sweet Tooth Season 3 on Netflix, she revealed that the project is still very much alive—though progress feels as slow as Sherlock solving a jigsaw puzzle.

Riding the wave of Robert Downey Jr.'s comeback from Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, Sherlock Holmes was a box office hit in 2009, grossing $524 million worldwide and redefining the character for the modern audience. The sequel, 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, quickly went into production but was seen as a critical and financial disappointment compared to its predecessor despite grossing $543 million at the worldwide box office. Plans for a Sherlock Holmes 3 have been discussed over and over for over a decade now.

Law, who played Holmes's trusty companion, John Watson, in both films, has finally provided a small update on the third film. While speaking with The Playlist, Law said a new draft of a script for Sherlock Holmes 3 has been completed, but he has not read it yet.

Law and Downey starred in two previous films centered on the iconic literary detective in 2009 and 2011. However, after that second movie, the franchise went quiet, with many wondering if the long-rumored third film would ever see the light of day.

In 2022, it was reported that Downey was set to executive produce a pair of Sherlock Holmes TV series for Max (outside of his movie franchise), and Sherlock Holmes 3 is still reportedly in development.

Rdj's Sherlock Holmes movies have aged well, holding up against initial criticisms for their bold storytelling. Downey Jr.'s unique performance adds a refreshing quirk to the character, setting these adaptations apart. BBC's Sherlock, while starting strong, lost its way with later seasons becoming messy and overwrought.

Although they werent that well received at the time of release, Robert Downey Jr.s Sherlock Holmes movies have held up very well. Not only are they consistently entertaining to watch and feature one of my favorite performances from Downey Jr., but in comparison to the BBCs show, there are several interesting decisions and revised plotlines that were perhaps taken for granted at the time. While the franchise has been seemingly left in the dust with no updates on Sherlock Holmes 3, Guy Ritchies two movies are the adaptations that I keep returning to time and time again.
