It's been confirmed that Nick Frost (Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy) will be in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, voicing a droid that the four kid main characters find. Named Sm-33, this droid is very much evoking the pirate vibe that's been a big part of the promotional material so far. But is that the only character that Frost is playing?

While promoting his newest horror film, Get Away, Frost spoke in a long interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his career. Of course, Skeleton Crew came up where he said something of note. Frost said:

Like the 2015 Spanish film The 33 which vividly recreated the real events of the 2010 Copiapó mining disaster, in which a group of thirty-three miners were trapped inside the San José Mine in Chile for sixty-nine days, Mission Raniganj strives to bring the palpable immediacy of the disaster to us.

Viola Davis is backing away from “G20” in a move that may put pressure on other A-listers.

The Egot winner says she’s stepping away from the project even after the film got the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement necessary to start production.

“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike,” said the 57-year-old in a statement obtained by Et. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA and the WGA.”

On Friday, SAG-AFTRA shared via its website that “G20” was approved for a waiver. Davis was set to produce and star in the film that secured the go-ahead from the actors guild, even given the involvement of Amazon Studios, because the project hails from the non AMPTP-affiliated MRC and will only be distributed by Amazon.

Exclusive: In a move that might well set a precedent for other A-listers, G20 star Viola Davis has become the first to publicly back away from a project for the duration of the actors and writers strikes, even after the film got the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement necessary to start production.

A series adaptation of “Gattaca” is in development at Showtime, Variety has learned from sources.

Exact plot details on the series are still under wraps, but sources say that Alex Gansa is attached to serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Gansa’s partner Howard Gordon also executive producing. They co-created the show with Craig Borten, who also executive produces. Sony Pictures Television will produce, with Gansa and Gordon currently under an overall deal at independent studio. Sources stress that deals for the project are not yet closed.

Showtime and Sony declined to comment.

This is not the first time that a series adaptation of “Gattaca” has been attempted. In 2009, it was reported that Sony Pictures Television was developing their own police procedural version of the film, though that project ultimately did not go forward.

HBO Max has released a gripping trailer for “Kimi,” a tech-age thriller that will debut exclusively on the platform Feb. 10.

From director Steven Soderbergh (“No Sudden Move”) and a script by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”), “Kimi” depicts a world where Kimi, the name of a fictitious Alexa or Siri-like digital assistant, is listening and recording every moment of people’s lives. The film, which hails from New Line Cinema and HBO Max, follows an agoraphobic voice stream interpreter, Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz), who believes to overhear a murder on a recording she analyzes. But when Childs tries to bring the recording to her employers’ attention, her concerns are pushed aside.

The film from New Line Cinema and HBO Max watches as an agoraphobic Seattle tech worker uncovers evidence of a crime.

Considering that most of us watch TV to relax, it’s remarkable how many shows leave us adrenalin-flooded, with hearts beating like hummingbird wings. It’s TV characters’ fault; those guys never know when to stop. They’re always attempting a hostile takeover of the family firm, escaping a race of murderous cyborgs or trying to dismantle a totalitarian regime. It’s exhilarating but exhausting behaviour. And the better a drama is, the more invested we are in its characters, so the more we care when they put their life on the line. That means more fingernails chewed, more faces clawed in horror, and more nervous foot-tapping while we should, by rights, be melted into our sofas like… all the chocolate melted into my sofa.

Mike Medavoy, CEO of Phoenix Pictures, is partnering with Mariel Hemingway and producer Sam Sokolow on a limited series about the life and times of Ernest Hemingway, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The series will explore the famous writer’s life as often fictionalized in classic novels like “A Farewell to Arms” and “The Sun Also Rises,” and will also delve into the unexplored psychological trauma that haunted him until he took his own life in 1961.

Stephen Leeds and Mark Chambers penned the pilot script and will also executive produce the project, which is not yet set up at a network or streamer.

“Hemingway was a genius, a soldier, a spy, a revolutionary, and counter to legend, one of the most sensitive writers of his era.” Medavoy said. “He won both a Pulitzer and a Nobel Prize for Literature, medals for bravery in both World Wars, and even survived two plane crashes in one day.

Student filmmakers from USC dominated the 26th Annual DGA Student Film Awards for African American, Asian American, Latino and women directors, which are designed to honor, encourage and bring attention to exceptional diverse directors in film schools and universities across the country. A national awards ceremony will take place virtually on Tuesday.

The DGA gives out 16 awards – eight in the West region and eight in the East – and USC students won all but two of the western regional honors. Student filmmakers from Columbia University won four of the eight eastern regional honors. An ambitious scheme to make the Mexican region of Jalisco the production capital of Latin America, a Jallywood so to speak, has launched with the introduction of a new state film law.

In a first-time virtual ceremony hosted by Eugenio Derbez, the gold, silver and bronze medalist winners were announced by a gathering of the industry’s most talented creatives. Showcasing another initiative by the Academy of embracing and nurturing the next generation of diverse talents, 13 out of the 18 winners are women, marking the most diverse class ever honored. Mexico’s famed “Tres Amigos” have made a name for themselves in Hollywood and beyond, directing their way to a bevy of Oscars. Less well known: the emerging wave of female auteurs from Mexico.

The directors range from Patricia Riggen and Issa Lopez, both busy with Hollywood projects and gaining their own international recognition, to women from indigenous communities, such as María Sojob, a Tzotzil native, and Elizabeth Piña, of Otomí Hñätho descent. Patricia Riggen, the woman who directed three episodes of the Amazon series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” told IndieWire that despite her experience, she gets undermined by male crew members “all the time.”

“Sometimes, I’m just so surprised that I arrived to projects in which I’m actually the most experienced or recognized person, and they still undermine me,” Riggen told IndieWire. “So it’s a very funny thing. Sometimes, I still find myself with crew members rolling their eyes — guys looking at each other and rolling their eyes — when I’m the one that has more credits.”

Because despite those guys on set, those credits just keep piling up, as the Mexican-born director’s recent transition from films like “The 33” to television has led to a constant stream of work that’s opened up a whole new world of opportunity, especially when it comes to genre.

The production, being directed by 11-time Emmy and four-time BAFTA nominee James Bobin marks the lovable Latina character’s big screen debut (and first live-action adaptation on any platform) after fourteen seasons (2000-2014) and 172 episodes on Viacom’s enduring children’s cable network. If you’ve been paying the teensiest bit of attention to what’s going on — and not going on — in Hollywood, there isn’t a lot in Half the Picture that will be news to you. But there is so much authority and insight in this film that is it essential viewing nevertheless for anyone who cares about all the great stories we are not seeing on our TVs and in our multiplexes because the voices of women storytellers are far too often stifled.

In director Amy Adrion’s documentary “Half the Picture,” La Times journalist Rebecca Keegan shakes her head as she states on camera that she has written the same article about the lack of gender parity in Hollywood at least nine or ten times.

Keegan is quietly incredulous, and if you’ve been paying attention to the ways in which the industry shuts out women creators, you likely feel similarly tired as Keegan is about pushing this question: Why are so many films still directed by straight, white men?

“Half the Picture,” then — for the tired among us — seems on the surface like a pill we really don’t need to swallow. (How many other ways can it be said that things aren’t fair?) But Adrion’s selection of interview subjects make the issue personal. They demonstrate through storytelling not just this rote message we’ve heard before but also...

Shooting TV pilots isn’t for everyone. They require extensive prep work and the ability to think on one’s feet. But those are the kinds of things at which Checco Varese has become expert.

After starting as a camera assistant for National Geographic Films in Peru and getting a couple of dozen NatGeo documentaries under his belt, he became a news cameraman for NBC, CNN and BBC. For 14 years he filmed in war-torn areas under sensitive circumstances — an occupation that required him to be a fixer as well as a gatherer of images. He would drop into a location and get things ready for the rest of the crew to come in and help him tell the story.

While building the visual DNA for a new series isn’t exactly the same as working in a war zone, the ability to be ready for anything has made Varese the go-to guy for TV pilots.

Amazon has released the trailer for “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” the latest take on the spy novelist’s best-known character. After being played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine, the CIA agent will now be portrayed by John Krasinski. Watch the trailer below.
