Shailene Woodley, Jamie Dornan and Sebastian Stan star in the latest film by director Drake Doremus, Endings, Beginnings, which sounds like another bittersweet, aching tale of romance amidst the challenges of life. Doremus' past films, including Zoe (2018), Newness (2017), Equals (2015), Breathe In (2013), and Like Crazy (2011), have often incorporated romance into their stories, though it's never been viewed in a traditional or stereotypical manner. Combined with down-to-earth visuals, they have presented a somewhat gauzy, yet grounded view of life. In Endings, Beginnings, set "in present day Los Angeles," according to the official synopsis, "Daphne (Woodley), a thirty something woman, navigates love and heartbreak over the course of one year. Daphne becomes intertwined with friends Jack (Dornan) and Frank (Stan) after meeting them...

Filmmaker Drake Doremus is making himself a specialist in love-hate relationships, a kind of cinema couples therapist in such films as Like Crazy, Breathe In, Equals, and Newness. With his latest film — Endings, Beginnings — Doremus breaks from the couples path to home in on one character. Her name is Daphne, and she’s drifting into her thirties in Los Angeles (the ultimate place to drift) while having a love-hate relationship with herself. Don’t yawn. As played with banked fire by a terrific Shailene Woodley, Daphne earns our rooting interest.

If you love emotional cinema, you should be a fan of filmmaker Drake Doremus, if you aren’t already. From his breakthrough Like Crazy, to other efforts like Breathe In, Equals, Newness, and Zoe, he’s been a storyteller with one of the biggest beating hearts out there. This week, his newest film Endings, Beginnings is opening, and it’s not just one of his best, but one of the top new releases of the year so far. Doremus was kind enough to hop on the phone with me last week for a short chat about his new movie, but also just about his process, which is heavy on improvisation and letting his actors find their characters organically. Below you will find my chat with Drake Doremus, who puts forth some truly moving work with Endings, Beginnings. My rave review is up on the site, as of Monday, and can be found here,...

Hilary Duff is back with new music and we couldn't be happier! On Wednesday, the 32-year-old singer and actress released a cover of Third Eye Blind's "Never Let You Go" that she did with producer Rac and her husband Matthew Koma. Not only does it mark the couple's first track together, but it also marks Duff's first new song in almost four years. She previously released her album Breathe In. Breathe Out. in 2015, and eventually covered Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" for her hit show Younger later that year.
From the upbeat tempo to the soft vocals, the new cover definitely feels reminiscent of Duff's earlier songs like "So Yesterday" or her "Our Lips Are Sealed" cover with her sister, Haylie Duff. Even though Duff is currently busy with Younger and the Disney+ reboot of Lizzie McGuire, is it too much to ask for another album? Maybe she can sing...

Writer/director Drake Doremus debuts his latest picture, “Endings, Beginnings,” at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. The film centers on a young woman (Shailene Woodley) navigating love and heartbreak over the course of one year while confronting the pain of a recent traumatic experience, and finding hope in the most surprising of places.
Your films are driven by the intimacy of the characters. Where did this story derive from?
I want to make stuff that I want to see, and I’m interested in relationships and momentary feelings that people experience. This is my most personal film since “Like Crazy” as I’d just gotten out of a six- year relationship before I started to work on the script. Life very much informs your own work, and you have to be ready to take an introspective look at the truth of your current situation, which can be cathartic.
What will surprise people about this film?...

"I wonder all the time if you think about me..." Amazon has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing sci-fi romance film titled Zoe, the latest film from filmmaker Drake Doremus. This is about two people at a research lab who are designing technology to "improve and perfect romantic relationships", but things go even further than they thought possible with a synthetic romance bot. Ewan McGregor stars, with Léa Seydoux playing the titular Zoe, and a cast including Rashida Jones, Theo James, Matthew Gray Gubler, Miranda Otto, Christina Aguilera, and Helen Johns. I really enjoy seeing Doremus play with love and how it all works, exploring it in unique and philosophical ways. He's also great with visuals and intimate shots, but I'm curious if the rest of the film is as good as this looks. When actors are asked about their career motivations, they often default to “just wanting to do something different.” Judging by her resume, however, Mackenzie Davis really means it. Over the course of only seven years and just over two dozen roles, the actress has already done a little bit of everything, sliding from indies to mainstreams films and back again, and that’s not about to change, even with Davis stepping into her most high-profile role yet.
Best known for her work in indies like “Breathe In” and “Almost Shine,” the actress is currently filming her biggest film to date: a “Terminator” reboot in which she’s rumored to be playing a “soldier-assassin from the future.” It’s the kind of movie that seems poised to catapult the 31-year-old performer into a different stratosphere, but before that, she’s still diligently stumping for her latest indie.

It's been a good year for Blumhouse Productions so far with Get Out and Split delivering impressive returns on minuscule budgets. This weekend their latest, Happy Death Day, hopes to follow suit as it targets a #1 finish, pushing WB's Blade Runner 2049 into runner-up position after just one week in theaters. Additional new releases include Stx's The Foreigner, Annapurna's Professor Marston & the Wonder Women and Open Road's Marshall as there's a little something for everyone in theaters, though it doesn't appear that little something will deliver big numbers at the box office collectively. On the heels of a very strong year so far, Blumhouse brings Happy Death Day to 3,149 theaters nationwide. The film takes the Groundhog Day concept and turns it into a horror film with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones director, Christopher Landon, at the helm. Industry expectations are for a debut in the mid-teens, though we're anticipating a result just a bit higher.

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

Drake Doremus has become one of the indie film world’s constant observers of disconnected romance, from his breakthrough debut “Like Crazy” to “Breathe In” and the Kristen Stewart-starring “Equals,” and he continues firmly in this wheelhouse in his next feature, “Newness.” The romance drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and reunites the director with his “Equals” leading man Nicholas Hoult.

The best stories are always those told from the lives of real people and Andrew Garfield seems to have a soft spot for a biographical tale as he yet again steps into the real-life shoes of Robin Cavendish in Breathe in which the trailer has been released.
Directed by Planet of the Apes Mvp Andy Serkis, who also runs The Imaginarium Studios the production company behind the film alongside Cavendish’s son Jonathan, Breathe tells the story of his Father. Paralysed from the neck down from the age of 28, Robin was given only a matter of months to live. Robin went on to become a pioneering advocate for the disabled alongside his wife Diane, travelling the world with the hope to transforms the lives of others like him.

It seems impossible that a new television show about the undead could possibly offer anything fresh.
The mere thought of the undead bring up visions of a pleathora of zombie shows already on the air. Whether it's violent horror or light-hearted attempt at comedy, we're already doing it.
But before Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet, Victor Fresco (Better Off Ted), hadn't yet joined the fray. Suddenly the smell of death is sweet again.
There are many ways to look at what Fresco is offering with his look at the sudden eruption of undead in suburbia. It's a reminder that life is short – and ironic, too – since it's often under the worst circumstances that we come to realize the beauty that already surrounds us.
It's also an effective tale of a marriage that needed a boost, a look at commitment and what it's like to stand by your partner through the good times and the really,...

Filmmakers around the world harbor the same fantasy: I’m going to make a film so good that it will play the Sundance Film Festival, score rave reviews, sell in an overnight bidding war for a multi-million-dollar minimum guarantee to a major theatrical buyer, open in packed theaters around the country, and launch my career.
Right.
Truth is, this hardly ever happens. We checked in with a group of lauded Sundance filmmakers, all who are returning to the festival this year with new films, to glean what they learned the hard way from their Sundance experiences.

The new Drake Doremus movie “Newness” is the rare film that was kept a secret almost by accident. A last-minute addition to the Sundance Film Festival, the movie was financed and produced so quickly that the filmmaking team skipped the usual casting announcements and other publicity efforts that accompany most Hollywood movies. It’s not that the producers tried to fly under the radar – they were just too busy making the actual movie.

Two new films have just been added to this year’s Sundance Film Festival: Drake Doremus’ “Newness” and Banks Tarver, Ted Bourne and Mary Robertson’s “Trumped: Inside the Greatest Political Upset of All Time.” The former marks Doremus’ fourth film to premiere in Park City after “Douchebag,” “Like Crazy” and “Breathe In,” while the latter continues Sundance’s tradition of ultra-timely political documentaries.

After discussing the year’s breakthrough directors, it’s time to traverse to the other side of the camera. Whether it’s their very first performances or a talent who’s been seen in a variety of features, yet, for whatever reason, hadn’t been allowed to command the screen, this year’s breakthrough actors are an eclectic group. Ranging from Hollywood offerings to minuscule independent dramas, check out our rundown.
Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz (Little Men)
Taking the concept of “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and conveying it through the economic realities of gentrification, Ira Sachs‘ Little Men is an affecting look at what happens when a friendship can fracture due to external pressures. Playing the two friends at the center, Michael Barbieri and Theo Taplitz honestly communicate the experience of an innocent relationship as they both explore what they want out of their teenage life. "Be careful, Izzy... People are fragile." Another intriguing sci-fi short to watch. This one is titled Memory Box, directed by filmmaking team Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell. Sadly, Aaron Aites passed away from cancer and this is his last film as a director. Ewell is keeping his memory alive and has started an Indiegogo for extra funding to release this short (beyond the internet). It first premiered at Fantastic Fest last month and is now out online. Described as a "psycho-sexual sci-fi tinged short film", Mackenzie Davis (from The Martian, Breathe In, "Halt & Catch Fire") stars a young mother who works at a memory-recreation facility where actors recreate clients' memories. Fellow sci-fi filmmaker Shane Carruth also stars. Love the score. Thank you to The Playlist for the tip on this. Don’t Breathe, which puts a twist on the classic home invasion subgenre, comes out this Friday, and these clips prove that it looks downright terrifying. The film follows a morally corrupt group of youngsters that decide to rob a blind man while he’s still in the house. Little do they know, this blind man has some very special skills, and they’re in for more than they thought.

Credit wars are a fact of Hollywood life that’s rarely laid bare. Those involved are often intimidated by the possible consequences, and the backstories aren’t simple; there’s the question of whether they’ll be believed, or if anyone really has the patience to hear them out.
