Midsomer Murders is back on Acorn DVD with three all-new mysteries that debuted in the UK last year. If you haven’t been keeping up to speed with the long-running drama then you should know that these three stories feature Neil Dudgeon as John Barnaby rather than John Nettles as his cousin Tom. While the identity of the principal investigator has changed fairly recently, it seems like a long, long time since anyone other than Jason Hughes served as the top man’s sidekick. The good news is that Hughes does feature in the these three stories. The bad news is that this is the last you’ll see of him as he left the show in 2013.
Written in the Stars is the first mystery in Midsomer Murders Set 24. As the story begins, the whole community are giddy with excitement about an upcoming solar eclipse.

Sure, Sunday tends to be overcrowded with high-end TV, including "Boardwalk Empire," "Eastbound and Down," "Homeland," "Masters of Sex," "The Walking Dead" and more, but what to watch the rest of the time? Every Monday, we bring you five noteworthy highlights from the other six days of the week. "Black Mirror": Series Premiere Tuesday, November 12th at 9pm on the Audience Network Charlie Brooker's acclaimed British anthology series about the dark side of technology and the future (a self-described "twisted parable for the Twitter age") finally makes it to U.S. television via DirecTV's exclusive network. The six-part series begins with "The National Anthem," in which a member of the royal family is kidnapped and the Prime Minister asked to perform a shocking public act in order to secure her freedom. "Black Mirror" is being paired with the American premiere of another U.K. series -- "Secret State,...

"Black Mirror" is an acclaimed British anthology series about our fears about technology and the future, one that earned comparisons to "The Twilight Zone." Created by Charlie Brooker ("Brass Eye," "Dead Set"), the series aired in the U.K. in two three-episode seasons, the first in December 2011 and the second in February 2013, and was for a long time a contender for series most talked about on the internet and yet not available on U.S. television. But "Black Mirror" is finally coming (legally) to U.S. screens courtesy of DirecTV's Audience Network. The channel, which is exclusive to DirecTV subscribers, will be airing all six episodes of "Black Mirror," premiering on Tuesday, November 12 at 9pm. The series will air alongside another Brit series, "Secret State" at 10pm. "'Black Mirror' is truly unlike any other show that is currently on television, which makes it a perfect fit for Audience,...

More TV casting news this Friday afternoon... I'm cleaning out my inbox to close out the week, and came across these two that we missed. First, Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga has landed a recurring role on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, although the character she'll be playing hasn't been revealed yet. This will mark her USA TV debut. Most recently, Negga appeared on Channel 4's (UK) political thriller series, Secret State, playing a meddlesome MI6 agent, and Channel 5's (also in the UK) acclaimed dramatic gangland series Love/Hate. Up next, catch her in All Is by My Side, John Ridley's Jimi Hendrix biopic, starring Andre...

Exclusive: All3Media America, the recently launched U.S. branch of the UK’s All3Media, is formally starting a scripted division. It will be run by former Bad Robot executive Eric Lehrman, named VP Scripted Television. The move reflects the company’s desire to enter the U.S. scripted business and build on All3Media’s slate of international scripted formats, including shows from Company Pictures (Shameless, Skins, The Village, Secret State), Lime Pictures (Hollyoaks), Objective Productions (Peep Show, Fresh Meat), South Pacific (Outrageous Fortune, The Almighty Johnsons), and Bentley (Midsomer Murders). All3Media America principals Eli Holzman and Stephen Lambert said that getting into scripted is something they had been looking to do since the two launched Studio Lambert USA in 2008. All3Media was an investor in StudioLambert USA and late last year triggered an option to buy the company, which became the core of All3Media USA.

When Secret State hits our screens, watch out for the vicar: he's played by novelist and former MP Chris Mullin, who wrote the book it's based on, A Very British Coup. Here is his diary from his time in front of the camera

Director Ed Fraiman has kindly agreed that I might have a walk-on part, a la Alfred Hitchcock. I thought he might reincarnate me as a backbench MP or even a minister; instead I am to be the vicar conducting a memorial service...

Ruth Negga won a host of admirers with her portrayal of Shirley Bassey on BBC TV last year. Now she's set to break through with a major Channel 4 spy drama and a role in Steve McQueen's next movie
Ruth Negga looks over her shoulder. "Hold on a minute," she says, leaning back to peer beneath our cafeteria table on an upper floor of the Riba building in central London. She bends to look under her chair. "Where is my movie career?"
The 30-year-old actor is clowning, and this is her way of telling me I've touched on a subject that has come up before. A best newcomer nominee at the Olivier Awards back in 2003, Negga has had memorable success in the theatre across the intervening decade, particularly at the National: Aricia next to Helen Mirren's Phèdre, Ophelia opposite Rory Kinnear's Hamlet. 'You could reverse an oil tanker into the gulf between what Secret State thinks it is (important, good) and what it actually is (cobblers with exploding CGI bells on)'
"The country needs you, Tom," hisses reptilian chief whip John Hodder (Charles Dance), cufflinks oscillating with indignation. Doughty Deputy Prime Minister Tom Dawkins (Gabriel Byrne) is unconvinced. "I'm not a leader," he mumbles, peering gloomily out of his Downing Street window. "You give off stability," persists Hodder. "People are craving that. We need someone (voice rises, eyebrows scrunch)… With Balls."
It's a rum old business, this modern politics lark, so thank Christ Secret State (Wednesday, 10pm, Channel 4) is here to sort everything out. A four-part conspiracy thriller ("inspired", the credits thunder, "by the novel A Very British Coup by Chris Mullin"), it arrives amid considerable hoopla. Its lavish trailer depicts a downtrodden Byrne gliding glumly through a deserted SW...
