On paper, Star Wars: The Clone Wars could've been a flash in the pan, but it ultimately blossomed into one of the most compelling long-form Star Wars stories in any medium. The series, overcoming a rocky cinematic debut, had an underrated run on Cartoon Network, a season on Netflix and a final season on Disney+.
From its beginning to its triumphant end, the creative team behind The Clone Wars was unwavering about the thematic and narrative integrity of the story they needed to tell. As a result, its legacy cemented itself as one of the defining pieces of continuity and a vital aspect of the central ideas behind the Prequel Era.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is one of the best things to happen to "Star Wars" since George Lucas tapped Irvin Kershner to direct "The Empire Strikes Back" and Lawrence Kasdan to write it. Coming off the success of the still visually stunning "Clone Wars" micro-series by maestro Genndy Tartakovsky, "The Clone Wars" took all the good ideas and concepts Lucas introduced in the prequel trilogy — yes, there are some great ideas here, even in "Attack of the Clones" — and gave them enough time to properly breathe and develop over time.
The result remains some of the best storytelling in all of "Star Wars." It's a show that gave us one of the best characters in "Star Wars" in the form of Ahsoka Tano, turned the faceless clone army into a group of dozens of fleshed-out and complex characters, and even expanded upon the politics of the Separatists and the titular conflict,...

Palpatine's grand plan, including Order 66, was nearly foiled by the clone trooper Fives in Star Wars: The Clone Wars in an act that was close to saving the entire galaxy. Fives, also known as Ct-5555, was a member of the Domino Squad along with Echo, the latter of whom is now mainly known for his time spent with Clone Force 99 in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. First introduced in The Clone Wars season 1, episode 5 "Rookies," Fives and Echo were some of the first named clones in the animated Star Wars TV show.
Following their efforts at Rishi Moon Outpost, which tragically saw the rest of their original squad terminated, Fives and Echo both became members of Anakin Skywalker's 501st Legion. The duo also became Arc troopers after their contributions during the Battle of Kamino, though not long after, Echo was thought to have died in an explosion at the Separatist prison named the Citadel,...

Shonen Jump is celebrating Dragon Ball's 40th anniversary in style with a series of redesigns of the series 42 volume covers, and one in particular was so realistic that the artist simply had to apologize to Toriyama. Many illustrious manga artists have put their own spin on Dragon Ball's nostalgic covers as part of the Dragon Ball Super Gallery project, but Masanori Morita's take on volume 24 has arguably taken the cake.
Masanori Morita, the legendary author of Rookies and Rokudenashi Blues recently re-imagined the cover art of Volume #24 of Dragon Ball depicting Goku, Vegeta, Krillin, and Gohan in his iconic, hyper-realistic art style. Hilariously, in a post on X, Morita apologized to Toriyama for giving Krillin a nose, calling back to arguably one of the most iconic gags in Dragon Ball and the idiosyncrasies of Toriyama's character designs.

Official Dragon Ball Anniversary Artist Apologizes to Akira Toriyama for 'Drawing a Nose on Krillin'

Last month, Masanori Morita, creator of the iconic Rookies delinquent manga, unveiled his submission for Dragon Ball's 40th Anniversary Super Gallery Project. However, he recently apologized to Dragon Ball's late creator Akira Toriyama for making a major stylistic change to Krillin.
For his official gallery entry, Morita redrew Goku, Gohan, Vegeta and Krillin using his signature art style, which gives a unique delinquent-esque makeover to the iconic Z fighters. However, Morita recently apologized (possibly in a tongue-in-cheek manner) via X for failing to depict Krillin accurately. "Toriyama-sensei, I'm sorry for drawing Krillin with a nose," he wrote. While he doesn't give a reason for this stylistic choice, it may have been due to his initial concerns about a noseless Krillin design not meshing well with his own style, which is comparatively less cartoonish than Toriyama's.

Saikyo Jump's 40th Anniversary Dragon Ball Super Gallery recently unveiled its latest entry. For its September 2024 issue, the publication highlighted a piece created by shonen manga artist Masanori Morita, who presents Goku and his fellow Z fighters with a radically different look.
Masanori Morita is best known as the creator of Rookies, a popular sports manga that follows the career of a high school baseball team whose members consist of street thugs and delinquents. Shared on X (formerly Twitter) by numerous Dragon Ball fans and shonen news hubs, Morita's artwork pays tribute to the original cover art of Dragon Ball's 24th volume, which likewise features Goku, Krillin and Vegeta. Accordingly, Morita redraws the three heroes -- plus young Gohan -- using his signature art style, giving Goku and company a uniquely intimidating vibe. Cbr readers can check it out below.

Domino Squad, featuring Echo and Fives, faced tragedy and triumph in The Clone Wars, forming an unbreakable bond through their experiences. Echo, thought dead, was actually prisoner of the Techno Union and joined Clone Force 99, forming a special bond with its members. Fives, last survivor of Domino Squad, uncovered a dangerous truth about inhibitor chips, ultimately sacrificing himself to save others.

Sundance documentaries are alive and well. And it looks like there’s some acquisition action this year, too. Which Sundance documentaries have the best shot at landing in Oscar contention this year? It helps to get bought early or to have an international footprint.
A rickety theatrical market for non-fiction features and a dwindling number of active documentary buyers meant that many Sundance 2023 films did not get picked up for distribution, or met serious delays before companies came through. As the top American film festival for docs, Sundance usually supplies as many as four out of the final five Oscar nominees each year.
And usually, by late summer, Oscar promotion is well underway. But last year, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,” which was rumored to be an HBO Documentary Films pickup for months, wasn’t announced until August 29, when other Sundance grads had been campaigning all summer.

The most exciting thing about the Hunger Games, citizens of the Capitol would probably argue, is that anyone can win. The first "Hunger Games" movie saw the strongest, fastest tributes, who had volunteered for the games and specifically trained for them, outranked by Peeta Mellark, whose main skill was disguising himself as a rock.
2023's Thanksgiving box office brawl has been similarly thrilling, even if there haven't been any violent deaths (yet). Though "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" was expected to be ousted by Disney's "Wish," it's now on track to keep the No. 1 spot for a second weekend.
"Songbirds & Snakes" got off to quite a muted start last weekend, with a franchise-low $44.6 million opening, but it has held strong amid a rush of new releases from studios eager to capitalize on the holiday box office. The "Hunger Games" prequel grossed a combined $13.2 million over Wednesday...

In 1977, Star Wars became one of the biggest box office successes in history. Bringing moviegoers the world envisioned by George Lucas, it wasn't long before the franchise was expanded through new movies, comics and TV series. One of the best of these was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, an animated series that filled in the gaps of the war between the Republic and Confederacy. Here, some of the greatest stories in Star Wars canon were told.
Despite being a series aimed at younger fans, The Clone Wars had its share of more mature themes, including some scary episodes. In fact, it was The Clone Wars that helped establish Star Wars as having some brilliant horror potential, through use of zombies, monsters and evil Sith. The series remains a fan favorite, especially for younger generations, and its darkest episodes helped maintain its cross-generational appeal.

Enjoy golf? You will simply love this. And if you aren´t a fan, this can be appreciated because Full Swing puts us in the skin and lives of these pros beyond the apparent tranquility of a world that is anything but… peaceful.
Eight really entertaining chapters full of luxury, interviews, oddities and anecdotes about golfing that present this sport as a little more than mere sport and bring us close to a world that few of us were aware of, and which from now on, will be much more interesting.
In the same vein as Break Point (this one was about tennis), in this series we are taken on the great tournaments and players, also new players in another generation that leaves Tiger Woods behind, who seek to carve a space for themselves in the history of the sport.
This series is very entertaining and, above all, is not focused exclusively for golfers.

‘Rookies’ Directors Thierry Demaizière, Alban Teurlai on Bringing Parisian Hip-Hop to the Big Screen

Hip hop is a popular pastime in Paris and its suburbs, having now made its way into many of the city’s high schools. At The Turgot high school in central Paris, hip hop is now part of the curriculum, as the Berlinale documentary “Rookies” (“Allons Enfants”), by Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai, shows.
This compelling film follows some of the school’s most talented hip hop aficionados train and battle under the watchful eye of a demanding coach. It served as the opening film this year for the Generation section at the Berlin festival, a sidebar dedicated to new films exploring the lives of teens and children. The film is a testament to the power of embracing raw talent and turning it into potential.
Producer-director Demaizière is best known for the documentaries “Lourdes” and “Rocco,” both of which he collaborated on with Teurlai who is an editor and director.

Munich-based Neuesuper, one of the rising values on Germany’s ebullient new TV scene, is teaming with Ard Degeto to develop “Breitscheidplatz,” a drama-thriller that depicts the build-up to Berlin’s 2016 Christmas market truck attack which left 12 dead.
The series, however, will buck trends, presenting not a matter-of-fact rehashing of the events leading up to the attack, but rather a fictional interpretation of what might have happened, turning on two German policemen working at a time when Europe had suffered a blitz of attacks, attempting to prevent a similar outrage in Germany.
“One of the huge questions poised by the attack is how on earth it could have happened, how did the security forces come to make such mistakes?” said Simon Amberger, one of the producers for Neuesuper.
A six-part series commissioned for Ard Degeto by Carolin Haasis, “Breitscheidplatz” tries to deliver an answer. Picturing the daily work of the...

This Star Wars: The Clone Wars article contains spoilers.
“Ambush,” the first episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, opens with a simple question: who is stronger, an army of droids, or a single Jedi Master?
Well, when that Jedi Master is Yoda, fans can be pretty sure of the answer, and “Ambush” delights in that certainty.
The episode is an action-packed, droid-busting romp, with a short interlude for Yoda’s serene Jedi wisdom. It’s an episode unlikely to be accused of being deep. And yet, “Ambush” carefully seeds the paradoxes that will ultimately cause the downfall of the Jedi. How can the peacekeepers of the galaxy be its generals? How can the Jedi stand for the sanctity of individual life while endorsing the use of a bred-for-battle clone army?
The episode opens on the moon of Rugosa orbiting the planet Toydaria, which is remote but strategically significant. Both...

Confused, chaotic, and with a sense of humour that might just tickle the average 13-year-old lad: Chinese action-film Rookies delivers a shameless dollop of comic book humour and action in one politically incorrect, anarchic and seriously violent package.
It is the ordinary everyday story of extreme sport thrill seeker and net celeb Zhao Feng (Wang Talu), who finds himself involved in organised crime by accident. That is: he just happens to paraglide into an illicit trade, as one does, at the very moment the deal is going down. Bad move. Cue slaughter of all concerned by international special agent and butch to-die-for Bruce (Milla Jovovich), who turns up in the nick of time to save and then recruit Zhao to Phantom.
Wow! Just like James Bond, intones Zhao, as he mugs in front of a mirror, points his new Phantom credit card, and cites that immortal catchphrase: “The name's Feng: Zhao Feng!

Netflix's latest buzzy show is Russian Doll, a dark comedy following Nadia, a woman stuck in a twisty Groundhog Day loop: she keeps reliving her 36th birthday party - and dying at the end of every loop. Star and creator Natasha Lyonne is a familiar face to Netflix viewers for her longtime role on Orange Is the New Black, and she's brought along a few other Oitnb alumni to join her on her own series. Among the familiar faces is "Beatrice," the girlfriend of Nadia's fellow time-loop victim Alan.
Beatrice is played by Dascha Polanco, who will most definitely be recognizable to fans of Orange Is the New Black. Since the flagship Netflix original comedy began in 2013, she has played inmate Daya Diaz. During the first two seasons, Polanco was a recurring character, but she was promoted to a series regular for the third season in 2015; she has kept this status ever since.

ABC has given a straight-to-series order to a drama to star Poppy Montgomery that will be a co-production with France’s M6 network.
“Reef Break” will revolve around a woman who is a former thief who now works as a “fixer” for the governor of a fictional island in the Pacific. The series is based on an idea of Montgomery’s and will be steered by showrunner/executive producer Ken Sanzel.
ABC said the series will air next summer.
“It’s an exhilarating and suspenseful ride set against some of the most beautiful locations,” said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment.
“Reef Break” will be produced through ABC Studios and ABC Studios International. ABC veteran Keli Lee relocated to London in 2015 to develop international co-productions for the network and studio. The drama will air on M6 in France and will be distributed by Disney Media Distribution in other international markets.

The TV follow-up to Minority Report has found its leads: Anchorman 2's Meagan Good and Inside Llewyn Davies' Stark Sands…
We recently heard that Daniel London would appear in the Minority Report series, reprising his role from the film as Wally the caretaker for the TV series set ten years after Tom Cruise brought the whole PreCrime system crashing down.
Now, we know who the two lead characters will be played by. They look a bit like this…
The lead role has long been listed as Detective Lara Vega, who we now know will be played by Meagan Good of Think Like A Man, Anchorman 2 and Brick. Her character is a detective who’s ‘not afraid to break a few rules.’ The action of the series will see her helping a former Precog Dash, who still needs help reintegrating into society ten years after the events of film.

The ranks of female film directors are about to swell a little more, as Katie Holmes confirms her plan to helm the upcoming adaptation of the debut novel from Annie Weatherwax – All We Had. The script is being written by Josh Boone (Stuck In Love, The Fault In Our Stars), with Holmes starring and pulling producer duties alongside Jane Rosenthal (Little Fockers) and Berry Welsh (NYC 22).
The story is described as ‘wry and sharply observed’ by publishers Simon And Schuster, and centres on a mother and 13 year old daughter, who find themselves existing on the verge of poverty in small town America, after their old life implodes. Holmes will play the role of the mother, but there is no news yet on wider casting.
While this news will almost certainly be met in many quarters with derision, it is important to note that, of late, Holmes has finally begun to come into her own.

Over the years, American novelist and screenwriter Richard Price has seen many of his works make smooth transitions from the page to the screen. His book The Wanderers was adapted by Philip Kaufman into a now-iconic coming-of-age film, and Spike Lee’s take on Clockers earned strong reviews. Additionally, Price’s work as a screenwriter has been highly successful – among his accolades are an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (for The Color of Money) and a Writers Guild of America Award (for HBO’s The Wire, on which he served as a writer). Now, Sony is betting on Price’s ability to deliver another strong drama by entering talks to adapt his upcoming work The Whites.
If a deal is made, super-producer Scott Rudin (Captain Phillips) will produce a film adaptation of the crime drama, the first written by Price under the pen name Harry Brandt. Set in New York City,...
