August slipped away faster than any of the characters in the Prime Video series The Summer I Turned Pretty could have prepared for in the teaser trailer for its second season. Premiering with two episodes on July 14, followed by weekly releases, the show’s return finds Taylor Swift soundtracking another nearly perfect summer at Cousins Beach, having used its season one trailer to debut “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from her re-recording of 1989. For season two, the emotions that give way to unraveled first loves and foreshadowed final goodbyes mark...

The Summer I Turned Pretty is heading back to Cousins for the next chapter in Jenny Han‘s coming-of-age tale focused on 16-year-old Belly Conklin (Lola Tung). Season 2 is set to debut on Friday, July 14 on Prime Video, with the first three episodes; the rest will be released weekly. As previewed in the first official teaser trailer (which features Taylor Swift’s “August” from folklore), above, Belly is still torn between family friends and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) — though as we see at the beginning, she and Conrad are obviously “into each other.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the possibility of her and Jeremiah. And hey, no matter what, as the video tells us as things get dramatic, “nothing feels better than the summer.” (Credit: Prime Video) In Season 2, while she once counted down the days to her time spent at Cousins,...

BTS’ Suga had a full slate of activities planned for his appearance on The Tonight Show Monday, May 1, discussing his new solo album as August D, D-Day, testing his gastrointestinal system with a new game, and performing his song, “Haegeum.”
To start at the very end, Suga’s riveting performance of “Haegeum” closed out the evening, his live band adding a hard rock edge to the song that epitomizes D-Day’s themes of liberation. As it happens, the haegum is a traditional Korean instrument and a Korean word for “lifting a ban.

Pj Harvey has confirmed her first new album in seven years. Entitled I Inside the Old Year Dying, it’s due out on July 7th via Partisan Records. As a preview, Harvey has unveiled “A Child’s Question, August” as the lead single. Watch the song’s accompanying video below.
The songs featured on I Inside the Old Year Dying came together in “about three weeks.” Harvey then recorded the album live at London’s Battery Studio with longtime collaborator John Parish and producer Flood.
“I think the album is about searching, looking – the intensity of first love, and seeking meaning,” Harvey said. “Not that there has to be a message, but the feeling I get from the record is one of love – it’s tinged with sadness and loss, but it’s loving. I think that’s what makes it feel so welcoming: so open.”

Taylor Swift has no fewer than four new albums — Lover, Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights — to cover in the Eras Tour, which was both an opportunity and a major challenge. It wasn’t hard to imagine that she’d end up sidelining the quieter material of Folklore and Evermore in favor of her stadium-shaking pop hits, but instead, she pretty much plays everything, every night.

Tyler Perry is the type of filmmaker whose name can appear as a possessive in front of a movie’s title. There’s Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?, Tyler Perry’s Temptation and, of course, the wildly successful Madea franchise. Across two dozen features, Perry has built a directing career that leaves both studio executives and his audience knowing exactly what they’re getting into. Tyler Perry — the name and the brand — is synonymous with a certain type of movie: unabashedly commercial fare with moral messaging. As Tyler Perry the filmmaker points out during a phone conversation from his office at his eponymous Atlanta studio, A Jazzman’s Blues, his latest effort, is not that movie: “People are not expecting this kind of movie from me in any sense, but I always knew it was there.”

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is resurrecting the superhero movie debate.
The “Matrix Resurrections” actor and “Aquaman” star told Vulture that he balances being in a DC film by working with filmmakers like Aaron Sorkin for Oscar-nominated “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and acting on Broadway in an upcoming rendition of “Topdog/Underdog.”
“Everything should be about getting to the truth. But sometimes you got to know which movie or genre you’re in,” Abdul-Mateen explained. “Something like ‘Aquaman,’ that’s clown work. ‘Aquaman’ is not ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7.’ You have got to get over yourself.”
Abdul-Mateen, who plays Manta in the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” continued, “In order to survive and to do it well, you have to play that game and then be crafty about when you want to surprise the audience, the director, or yourself with a little bit of ‘Wow, I didn...

“People are catching up on films,” is how one arthouse executive described the current moment in specialty, which echoes the slowdown in studio wide releases.
August can be slow ahead of a trio of festivals – Venice, Toronto, New York – and a ramp up to awards season. It can also offer an less obstructed runway for specialty films to cross over (Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma). This summer has been slow, but strong word of mouth has boosted select films. Warner Bros.’ Elvis for one, is at 143 million, pushing five times what it made opening weekend. Focus Features’ Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris opened at 2 million but will cross 10 million. Rrr is a phenomenon, passing 11M. Greg Laemmle said he’s bringing the blockbuster from India back on August 26. Laemmle is also holding an event screening for Neon documentary Fire Of Love next Wed. and hopes that will keep other runs going.

Now comes my favorite part of the film awards season, the very beginning, when everyone is a contender.
It’s just like the old days, when the carnival came to town (also in late summer). Step right up, everyone’s a winner! Take a shot, win a prize!! You can’t win if you don’t play the game!!!
We all know it isn’t quite true. Some of these movies don’t stand a chance. But I love the inclusiveness of it. For a couple of months—let’s say, from Aug. 31 when the Venice Film Festival opens until maybe late November, when Oscar voters start fretting about shortlists—anything is possible. You could win the Kewpie doll! Heck, Nightmare Alley was picking up prizes on the front-end.
At least it ended the season as an Oscar nominee, which is more than can be said for several hundred rivals.

Taylor Swift could be one step closer to an Egot.
It turns out that the singer-songwriter, who already has 11 Grammys and 1 Emmy, has a real Oscar contender on her hands with her short film “All Too Well” that she released late last year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Swift’s short “received an Oscar-qualifying run,” making it eligible to be nominated for the Academy’s ‘best live action short’ award. What’s more, Swift seems to have her eyes set on taking home Oscar gold. THR reports that Swift is “working with a top consulting firm to guide its awards campaign.”

July 2022 generated 1.133 billion in domestic gross — the best month’s gross in the Covid era, and it represents 88 percent of the take in July 2019. The majority came from two 300 million+ grossing releases with “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (Universal) edging out “Thor: Love and Thunder” (Disney) as the biggest film. “Minions” opened a week earlier, but it should edge out the Marvel film that many believed could be the summer’s biggest grosser.
At best, “Thor” will end #4 for the season, with a respectable but not-sensational 340 million domestic, and a little more international. That’s down from “Doctor Strange in the Multi-verse of Madness” (Disney) at 411 million domestic, 543 million foreign (#2 summer domestic gross with “Minions” taking third).
Shoring up July was “Top Gun: Maverick” adding 112 million to the 541 million it already amassed. The month also showed some strength for original films with Jordan Poole’s “Nope” (Universal) and “Where the Crawdads Sing...

In a Broadway season teeming with exciting plays, musicals, and revivals, a dramatization of a small city council meeting may sound dull. Perhaps in the hands of a lesser playwright than Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Letts, but his fictional Big Cherry bureaucracy at the center of “The Minutes” is anything but tame. The “August: Osage County” scribe re-teamed with director Anna D. Shapiro for this genre-defying political satire with a horrifying underbelly. The ensemble comprises both New York and Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre mainstays, featuring the likes of Blair Brown, Jessie Mueller, Austin Pendleton, and Letts himself, with Noah Reid making his Broadway debut. “The Minutes” opened at Studio 54 on April 17 for a limited engagement.

The Best Supporting Actress awards were first handed out at the 9th Academy Awards ceremony held in 1937, and in the nearly 85 years since, 83 women have received this honor. Only two have won multiple Oscars in this category: Dianne Wiest and Shelley Winters. The great character actress Thelma Ritter holds the record number of nominations in this category with six, sadly without a win, while Amy Adams has had five bids in supporting (one in lead), also without a win.
This is a category that often sees first nominations, many times recognizing ingenues who go on to earn multiples nominations throughout their careers. The youngest acting winner of all time was a Best Supporting Actress recipient: 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal won for “Paper Moon” in 1974. However, veteran actresses are also considered, with some receiving their sole nomination in their golden years. August on Netflix tends to be a lot like August at the movies: A sweaty grab bag of fluff, comfort food, leftovers, and “that could be interesting” question marks. Netflix Original “He’s All That” certainly falls into the first category, though we’re crossing our fingers that Mark Waters’ dubious sequel to a teen movie classic is more than just another example of a streamer exhuming whatever IP it can. Also waiting in the wings is the Jason Momoa action vehicle “Sweet Girl,” which stars the once and future Aquaman as a big daddy hell-bent on punishing the pharma execs he holds responsible for his wife’s death.
So far as still-unseen Netflix Originals go, August’s most promising new title is Ferdinando Cito Filomarino’s “Beckett,” which stars John David Washington as an American tourist who’s framed for a crime while on vacation in Greece. That will premiere...

Nitram star Caleb Landry Jones has won best performance by an actor at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the Justin Kurzel-directed film, the American actor portrays the gunman who committed the 1996 Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, which killed 35 people and wounded 23 others.
Starring alongside are Judy Davis as his mother, Anthony Lapaglia as his father, and Essie Davis as a woman who befriends him.
Scripted by Kurzel’s frequent collaborator Shaun Grant, the film focuses not on the events of the massacre itself, rather the lead up, in an attempt to understand how and why it occurred.
As well as the Cannes recognition, Jones’ portrayal of the murderer has been hailed by critics in early reviews.
Writing in Deadline, Todd McCarthy says the actor “nails the kind of over-friendly, manically aggressive type people want to avoid.”
“The performance certainly will accrue him fresh admiration and attention.”

Can I just talk about how proud of Taylor Swift I am right now? The 31-year-old singer is living her absolute best life at the Grammys. After five years, she made a grand return to the music award show on Sunday night, and I'm completely in awe. First, she walked the red carpet in a gorgeous floral dress, then Taylor gave a stunning performance alongside her Folklore collaborators Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. We're talking twinkly lights, a breathtaking set, and an equally masterful medley of "Cardigan," "August," and "Willow." It's basically like she took the magic of Folklore and Evermore and brought them to life with her Grammys appearance. Something about seeing her twirl around in her best dress, fearless, is making me Emotional. See more of her Grammys appearance ahead.

The Grammys might slip away like a bottle of wine, but Taylor Swift's performance will certainly linger like a tattoo kiss. Even though her Lover Fest concerts have been officially cancelled, the superstar treated Swifties to a live rendition of "cardigan," "august" and "willow" for the 2021 Grammy Awards on Sunday, March 14. Long story short, it was a good time. For her introspective performance, Taylor brought out her "Folklorians," aka her folklore and evermore collaborators Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff. Hidden within the new Taylor Swift album we were gifted with at the stroke of midnight is a teenage love triangle, told from distinct perspectives in three separate songs: “Cardigan,” “August,” and “Betty.” “I created character arcs and recurring themes that map out who is singing about who,” she explained.
Outside of this triangle, however, is a whole other mess: “Illicit Affairs,” co-written by Jack Antonoff. With twinkling instrumentation that includes a pedal steel guitar, it’s the underrated romantic tragedy of Folklore. The story starts in “beautiful rooms” and...

It has only been 11 months since Taylor Swift released her seventh studio album, “Lover,” but the Covid-19 pandemic inspired her to release her eighth on July 24: “Folklore” was announced by Swift mere hours before its release, but fans already started devouring it overnight. SEE2021 Grammy Predictions: Album of the Year
Swift said in a statement, “Before this year I probably would’ve overthought when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My gut telling me that if you make something you love, you should just put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with.

So here we are again. The world was in the middle of the cruelest summer ever, just staggering through late July, when Taylor Swift decided to make it all so much messier — her specialty. In a move that nobody saw coming, she announced a surprise album on July 23rd, less than a year after her career-capping smash Lover. (A year to the day after she dropped “The Archer.”) Like the rest of us, Swift had to cancel her summer, including her LoverFest shows, which would have been next week. Instead,...

Taylor Swift surprise announced her eighth studio album, Folklore, which she released on Thursday at midnight.

With her free time, however, she came up with the collection of new songs that will comprise Folklore. Swift wrote and recorded all the songs on the album in the past four months while in quarantine, collaborating with Aaron Dessner of the National,...

After a stratospheric rise to stardom in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Josh Hartnett settled down. Since then, much has been made of his escape from Hollywood and the roles he was allegedly offered and turned down. Much less has been made of the good work he did in smaller fare around that same time. Films like Paul McGuigan’s Wicker Park, Rod Lurie’s Resurrecting The Champ, and Austin Chick’s August come to mind––all underrated pictures that deserve a larger audience.
Over a decade later, Hartnett, now 42 years old, is more versatile than ever before. Following an impressive three-season run on the Showtime series Penny Dreadful and a slew of smaller films of wide-ranging genres, he now plays real-life journalist Victor Malarek in Daniel Roby’s Most Wanted. The film, arriving digitally this week, is based on the story of Alain Olivier and his illegal arrest...

Another day, another release date domino effect in the face of growing Coronavirus concerns, spiking positive Covid-19 results and a pandemic that never really went away and is biting the entire country in the ass. One of those industries effected, obviously is the theatrical industrial complex and with Covid on the rise again, and L.A. theaters not given the go-ahead to reopen yet, all the studios are getting gun shy again—no one really wants to be the first major film in release in case there is yet another coronavirus surge and their film is blamed.

Caracas-based Veloz Distribución may be the only Venezuelan company attending Cannes’s Marché du Film this year, but the five-year-old shingle has some impressive film and TV projects in development, including the latest work by celebrated auteur Román Chalbaud.
Headed by actress Elaiza Gil and writer-director Edgar Rocca, Veloz is also in the process of launching VelozStreaming, a new VOD service described as “more of a virtual cinema” and “a little in the spirit of Mubi.” The company is on the lookout for films for the platform as well as for another new Venezuelan streaming service, Click a Cine, established by a group of filmmakers, producers and actors, among them producer Carlos Malavé.
Chalbaud, the iconic Venezuelan filmmaker whose debut feature, “Adolescence of Cain,” premiered in San Sebastian in 1959 alongside Alfred Hitchcock’s “North By Northwest,” is next directing “Violence,” a film about femicide, feminism and political corruption.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.
Below you can find the full list of every movie and TV series coming to HBO Now, Go and Max next month, broken down by day of release. It includes an enormous amount of DC animated movies, mostly featuring Batman, the Justice League and Green Lantern. All of the Christopher Reeve Superman films will be up on HBO Max as of July,...
