When legendary producer David E. Kelley calls a series of crime novels “riveting,” it’s a safe bet he’ll be turning them into equally compelling television. Enter The Calling. Loosely based on The Missing File from Israeli author Dror Mishani, the drama (once titled The Missing) looks at spiritual, introspective, compassionate, uniquely named NYPD detective Avraham Avraham, a special investigator in Brooklyn’s diverse Crown Heights neighborhood. “Avi is a very complex character,” the Israeli-born Wilbusch says. His calling is solving missing persons and homicide cases through uncanny observational abilities. He’s also devoted to his work family: eager rookie detective Janine Harris, acerbic veteran cop Earl Malzone and supportive boss Capt. Helen Davies. While Wilbusch says the series retains plenty of Kelley’s signature offbeat humor, the cases reveal Avi as a “haunted soul” who does his work ...

Fans of NBC’s current-season shows will no longer find them on Hulu as of next month — they’ll be flying over to NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
NBCU announced that starting Sept. 19, Peacock Premium will become the streaming home for next-day access to current seasons of NBC shows the day after they air on the network. The media conglom had clawed back the next-day rights for NBC shows from Disney-controlled Hulu, in which NBCU still owns a one-third stake, earlier this year.
NBC series that will become exclusively available on Peacock include franchises like Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” trifecta and One Chicago shows, the network’s late-night lineup including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and “Saturday Night Live,” returning series such as “La Brea,” “New Amsterdam” and “Young Rock” and competition shows including “The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent.” Also streaming exclusively on...

Something wicked this way comes.
Towards the end of Manifest Season 2 Episode 10, both Adrian and Cal experienced a similar Calling as they saw three shadows closing in on them.
The Calling, though, I'm not sure if it can even be called that as it seems more like an omen, appeared throughout the episode as the usually outspoken Cal tried to hide it from Olive instead of asking for help with trying to figure out what it meant.
Cal's not the type to ignore a Calling, but this one seemed to terrify him more than anything else.
He mentioned that it was one of the first Callings that he simply never figured out, as the black shadow on the picture of the Stone family kept getting bigger and bigger with time.
Initially, it seemed like the Calling had something to do with Grace's labor, but even after everything worked out for her,...

When Michaela uttered "what the hell is happening" at the end of Manifest Season 2 Episode 6, I've never related to anything more in my life.
It's comforting to know that the characters are just as lost and confused as the majority of the audience.
The Callings have made it clear that they want Ben, Mic, Saanvi, and Zeke to "save the passengers," but these scenarios have taken us away from the core mystery and they've become a bit muddled.
Ben and Saanvi shared a Calling (Yay! the dynamic duo is back!), which showed a young, scared boy on Flight 828 and led them to a man named Finn, an 828 passenger who found out he had a five-year-old child as a result of a one-night stand with a woman in Jamaica.
You're probably thinking, "So now the Calling is here to reunite long lost families?" It's a valid question, and the answer is yes,...

Kennedy Holmes made it into the final four on “The Voice” by winning the Instant Save on Tuesday’s results show over another artist on Team Jennifer Hudson, MaKenzie Thomas, and Adam Levine’s last remaining act, Reagan Strange. We asked viewers if this was the right result and a whopping 61% of you said it was. Do you agree? Read our recap of their three performances and then sound off in the comments section.
McKenzie was up first and did a cover of Patty Griffin‘s contemporary folk song “Up to the Mountain.” As our live blogger John Benutty noted, “This was a great song choice for her, finally taking a step back away from the diva ballads and giving us something we can all immediately connect to. As expected her big voice shined bright and she showed the same control, maturity and depth of talent that she’s had all season.

During Tuesday’s Top 8 results episode of “The Voice,” pop singer Reagan Strange of Team Adam Levine was eliminated just prior to making it to the Season 15 finale. Since Reagan, MaKenzie Thomas and Kennedy Holmes placed in the middle section based on America’s votes, they all had to sing for the instant save. Unfortunately, Reagan delivered a pitchy performance of The Calling‘s “Wherever You Will Go” and was swiftly sent packing. Watch Reagan’s final “Voice” performance above.

Sevdaliza (real name: Sevda Alizadeh) is an Iranian-born, Dutch-based singer whose music is an ever-morphing combinations of European, Persian and electronic influences. It’s often described as “trip-hop” and while that holds true for the ricocheting beats and occasional quavering Portisheadian moods, it’s loaded with Fka Twig-ish elements as well as swooning string arrangements that recall Siouxsie & the Banshees circa “Dazzle” and especially “Homogenic”-era Bjork, who is also a profound influence on Sevdaliza’s elaborate videos and album artwork.

He had made name for himself with the Cannes debut We Are What We Are in 2010, and the remake of his film actually premiered at the fest not that much time afterwards. With production commencing late in 2013, we’re surprised that Jorge Michel Grau’s English language debut didn’t drop in 2014 — but only means a little more time in post for the shot in Albuquerque, New Mexico thriller. Featuring Bella Thorne in the lead, Big Sky sees Grau reteam with cinematographer Santiago Sanchez.

The directorial debut of Jason Stone (best known for being co-writer on inspiration for This is the End, short movie Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse) The Calling sees Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon), a police detective in the small Canadian town of Fort Dundas, investigating the brutal murder of one of the towns inhabitants. When one body leads to another and another, Micallef and her team, including new recruit Ben (Topher Grace), come to realize the religious fanatic (Christopher Heyerdhal) behind the murders is only just beginning. A totally engaging police prcedural, The Calling makes great use of the gloomy Canadian wilderness, all dense forests and barren, snow covered fields , to instill a nice sense of dread into proceedings. It hits the ground running, with the first act more concerned with personal lives of Micallef and those who surround her. It does a great job of building up the characters,...

Susan Sarandon believes that Hollywood is more concerned with looks than politics.
The 67-year old has suggested that the film industry punishes actors for how they look.
In an interview with The Guardian, she said: "The good news and bad news about Hollywood, is that they're not political.
"They probably would punish you more for getting overweight or getting old."
The Tammy actress said she is glad she doesn't live in Los Angeles because of this image.
"In La, you can lose a job over a head of lettuce in a supermarket if you're not all pulled together. You know: 'I saw her, she's not looking so good.'"
Sarandon also joked about her more recent movie roles.
"I'm glad I'm kind of out of the dying groove," she said of her roles playing dying women.
"Then I played three alcoholics in a row," she added.

New Director Jason Stone brings to life a psychological crime thriller – highlighted by an All-star cast – with his new film – The Calling.
Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon) plays a seasoned cop in the quaint little town of Fort Dundas, which hasn’t seen too much excitement in years. When she decides to check on a neighbor and good friend of her mother Emily (Ellen Burstyn), Micallef happens upon a gruesome crime scene.
Micallef needs help to solve this type of murder, so she reaches out to Detective Ray Green (Gil Bellows), who doesn’t seem to want to come to her aid, now or ever. When a younger cop named Ben Wingate (Topher Grace) decides to transfer to their precinct, he might just be the help she needs to find who committed this heinous crime!

Canadian culture has long been a topic of discussion among intellectuals simply because there are those who argue that it doesn’t really exist. Obviously there is a culture that those of us living in Canada experience, but it is difficult to ascribe a distinct Canadian nature to that culture since so much of it is almost directly adopted from our neighbors to the south.
There is one piece though, that does differ significantly between Canadians and Americans, religion. It doesn’t really matter what faith one practices in Canada, it is generally a very private thing. Popular culture is almost universally secular with the exception of the occasional political discussion. But even then, the rhetoric in discussions around abortion, same gender marriage, and physician assisted suicide never reach the same heights that they do in the Us.

Busy Signals: Stone’s Aptly Named Thriller Phones It In
There is not anything innately offensive about a really decent made-for-tv thriller, especially the type based on those ceaseless examples of books once referred to as dime store pulp fiction, juicy, hard boiled or even illogical. These types of mildly entertaining whodunits aren’t without a certain sense of craftsmanship either. But half their charm is that they’re on television, so they may seem a bit irritating if you had to pay to see them in the theater—and that’s concerning the really decent ones. It’s hard to say why writer/producer Jason Stone chose to adapt The Calling, the first in a series of mystery novels by Michael Redhill, published under the pseudonym of Inger Ash Wolfe. Adapted by screenwriter Scott Abramovitch, who has only written films for television previously, it’s a lukewarm endeavor a...

What's Susan Sarandon's secret to holding on to her sex symbol status at 67? "If you want to age gracefully, you don't smoke cigarettes and probably laugh a lot, and get the normal amount of exercise, and eat well and stay out of the sun would be the main things," the actress told People at the N.Y.C. press day, July 24, for her upcoming thriller, The Calling. "As is having an amazing makeup and hair team, that's really the secret," Sarandon added matter-of-factly. While the Thelma & Louise icon's favorite sport may be ping-pong, her workout regimen is much more diversified.

Briefly: One more interesting choice for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar project, finishing up its casting before shooting later this year. Deadline is reporting that Topher Grace will take an unspecified role in the sci-fi movie. Grace was last seen in Predators, The Double, The Big Wedding and The Giant Mechanical Man and recently finished shooting The Calling and A Many Splintered Thing, but hasn't been in too much otherwise. The cast for Interstellar already includes quite a few fantastic actors: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck and Michael Caine. The script was originally written by Jonathan Nolan, updated by Christopher Nolan and will "depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding." Cannot wait for this one. Launching November 2014.

What is Casting Couch? It’s starting off the week right with a new round of casting announcements. Read on to find out which project is going to unite the dream team of Ellen Burstyn and Luis Guzman. Godzilla has found another puny human to knock over a building onto. Deadline is reporting that Happy Go Lucky star Sally Hawkins has just been hired to take what is being described as the last lead role in Gareth Edwards’ currently-filming Godzilla. Though Hawkins has become something of a big name in the indie world over the last decade or so, this will be her first role in a blockbuster film that utilizes big action and effects work and whatnot, so it should be interesting to see if she’s one of those actors who transitions well into doing larger scale work, or if she’s one of those actors who looks disengaged and out of place whenever they...

When the words .independent serial killer thriller. all come together like that, it brings to mind a certain kind of.how do you say it.stinking piece of crap. The cinema world is flooded with stuff like that, so all exceptions to that normalcy are certainly welcome around these parts. With any luck, that will happen with Jason Stone.s The Calling, an adaptation of the novel written by Inger Ash Wolfe . a pseudonym of poet and author Michael Redhill. The plot itself is intriguing enough, but what piques pour interest is the involvement of Susan Sarandon and Topher Grace, both of whom have signed on to the project, according to Deadline. The Calling is Stone.s debut feature, and it.s also the first feature screenplay for Scott Abramovitch. Sarandon will be playing Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef, a woman who's investigating the murder of an elderly woman, "which leads...

Yes, in some theatres right now a movie called The Call is currently playing, but that's not stopping the makers of the indie thriller The Calling from using a similar title.
In The Calling, which we expect to be renamed The Hive shortly, Susan Sarandon will play a small-town Canadian detective who tracks down a serial killer targeting the terminally ill to use as disciples in his own planned resurrection. Topher Grace will also star as an ambitious police officer recently transferred from Toronto who becomes the detective’s right-hand man.
The Calling was written by Scott Abramovitch and will be directed by Jason Stone, with production getting under way this week. Christine Vachon, Killer Films, and Randy Manis are producing.
