The Sony panel was held at the CinemaCon event last night, and while the Anaconda reboot was surprisingly left out of the presentation, they did take a moment to provide updates on a couple of their other upcoming horror projects: the Resident Evil movie that’s coming our way from Barbarian director Zach Cregger and a new Insidious sequel!
Sony will be releasing Cregger’s Resident Evil movie on September 18, 2026, and it was recently revealed that Austin Abrams of Euphoria, who worked with Cregger on his upcoming film Weapons, is in early talks to star in the film. No details have been revealed about the screenplay Cregger has written with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead), but we have previously heard that the story apparently harkens back to the original Capcom game’s horror roots.

Josh Trank got a lot of positive attention for his directorial debut, the 2012 found footage superhero movie Chronicle… then nearly destroyed his career with his follow-up, the disastrous 2015 Marvel Comics adaptation Fantastic Four. He came back with the 2020 biopic Capone, which went straight to VOD during the Covid lockdown. Now, Deadline reports that Trank is putting together his fourth feature film, an independent horror thriller called Send a Scare, which has Robbie Amell (Code 8) and Victoria Justice (Depravity) taking on the lead roles.
Scripted by Tank and Andrew Ryan from an original story by Ryan, Send a Scare centers on an interactive horror startup that gives thrill-seekers a way to send scares to friends and family… but when potential investors host a demonstration, the experience gets hijacked by a real masked killer with a deadly agenda.

Kai Caster (“Yellowstone”) has been cast in the upcoming horror-comedy Halloween Store, Deadline reports.
He joins the previously announced Simon Rex (Scary Movie 3) and Natalie Alyn Lind (“The Goldbergs”).
In the film, a group of people find themselves trapped inside a costume store on Halloween night with a mysterious killer on the loose.
Caster will play Brock, the boyfriend of Amy (Lind) and a star quarterback with alternative motives. At first glance, Brock is the epitome of an all-American good boy, but he may just have a dark, sinister side.
Shane Dax Taylor (Murder Company) directs from a script by Chad Law (6 Bullets) and Josh Ridgway (The Flood).
“Saturday Night Live” stalwart Kenan Thompson and Steven Schneider are among the executive producers on the project.
Artists for Artists, Big Bad Pig Productions, and Racer Entertainment are producing, with Range Media is handling sales.

Ask any stunt person, and they'll tell you: the ability to sell taking a punch is just as important, and perhaps more so, than credibly throwing one. Ask any editor or sound designer, and they'll corroborate this and then some. If you've ever watched raw dailies from an action movie, you'll note how oddly weightless a lot of fight sequences become when they're robbed of their rhythm and the satisfying Thwam sound of their body blows. All this is to say that action in cinema is so incredibly dependent on selling the total effect of the violence, even more than show-stopping stunts and feats of strength and dexterity. Since it's all in the timing, it's no wonder that so many great action directors either come from or are adept at comedy -- from Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan.
However, there are just as many great action filmmakers who come from the world of horror,...

Is it any wonder that sleep has long been a topic for horror? It’s our most exposed and disoriented state. Sleep has been scary on-screen since the 1920s, beginning with German expressionist horror. In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, which depicts a brainwashed sleepwalker, or Nosferatu (including Eggers’ 2024 take on it), in which a vampiric villain uses sleep to manipulate as well as attack. Since, sleep has found its way into nearly every subgenre. In supernatural-slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street, Freddy Krueger hunts teenagers down in their dreams, one final threat to the fragility of childhood. In the found footage classic Paranormal Activity, sleep has been difficult for Katie her entire life thanks to a demonic entity tied to her familial history. In films like The Amityville Horror, sleeping and waking states give way to fears about domestic violence. In the Insidious series, the nature of sleep itself...

Horror has many tropes, but one of the biggest is the jump scare. They've become commonplace in the genre over the decades as an easy way to get an audience to react, but while some, such as in Sinister and Insidious, are very effective, in lesser films, they've become an overused cheap tactic that's more about creating a physical response rather than building up true tension. There was a time though when jump scares were a rarity, which made them work more when they were used. The first ever jump in a feature film is also one of the best. In 1942's Cat People, director Jacques Tourneur and producer Val Lewton created a jump scare that will make you jump out of your seat, not out of laziness, but in brilliant and purposeful misdirection.

Horror fans will be happy to know that one of the most dependable franchises of the decade is now available to stream for free. Insidious and three of its four sequels have now been unleashed for your streaming pleasure. The free streaming platform Tubicontinues to kill it at bringing hidden gems and beloved classics to the masses. Browsing the Tubi catalog somehow feels like strolling the aisles of a video store, which, for the kids out there, was a building that had physical copies of movies you could rent and is now probably a vape store.
The first Insidious film, which was made by directing and writing super-team, James Wan and Leigh Whannell - who have collaborated on this franchise as well as the original Saw film - was a sleeper hit that, on a meager 1.5 million dollar budget, managed to earn 100 million worldwide at the box office.

The 1980s werewolf movie Silver Bullet was panned as a complete howler by many critics on its release, but fans of the cult classic werewolf movie starring Gary Busey and Corey Haim from the mind of Stephen King can now stream the movie for free. The horror film from 1985 is now part of Tubi's extensive library of scary movies, although the scares in this one are admittedly few and far between. However, that doesn't mean Silver Buller isn't worth a rewatch.
Other horror titles arriving on Tubi include four Insidious movies, both Grindhouse movies by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, the zombie feature starring Brad Pitt, World War Z, and the "alligators act like sharks" movie, Crawl, among others. However, if you're in for a Stephen King marathon, Tubi also offers adaptations like Children of the Corn, two Carrie movies, the author's directorial effort Maximum Overdrive, and Creepshow 2.

Patrick Wilson, the star of franchises like The Conjuring, Insidious and Aquaman, has commented on his potential return to the DC Studios franchise. Wilson played Orm Marius, a.k.a. Ocean Master, in the two Aquaman entries that were directed by James Wan as part of Zack Snyder's Dceu. Now that James Gunn has taken over the franchise and turned it into the Dcu, fans are curious about which previous characters – if any – might be allowed to return.
Wilson spoke to Variety on the podcast Just for Variety, where he talked about his current projects. He's promoting his new film, Millers in Marriage, a drama written and directed by Edward Burns. However, Wilson is also pursuing a career in theatre. He's currently co-producing a musical based on the '80s film The Lost Boys, and in the past, he's been featured in plays like Oklahoma! and The Full Monty.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom marked Jason Momoa's final adventure as the sea-faring superhero. The movie was met with largely negative reviews last December and holds a "Rotten" 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also grossed only $439.4 million at the worldwide box office despite its predecessor making over $1.1 billion.
It's no secret the Dceu sequel went through a lot of changes courtesy of multiple rounds of reshoots, several edits, and real-life controversy which led to a reduced role for Amber Heard's Mera. That might go some way in explaining where it all went wrong.
Both movies saw Patrick Wilson take on a significant supporting turn as Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master. Arthur Curry's half-brother was the first movie's villain and an unwilling ally to Arthur Curry in the sequel. He also became an unexpected source of comic relief, starring in the Dceu's final-ever post-credits scene that saw Orm happily eat a cockroach.

Patrick Wilson wouldn’t be upset if a third ‘Aquaman’ movie doesn’t happen. The 51-year-old actor portrayed Orm ‘Ocean Master’ - the redeemed brother of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman A.K.A. Arthur Curry - in the two DC superhero blockbusters but isn't desperate to return for another movie as he doesn't think there is much more to explore in terms of his character. In an interview with Variety, the ‘Insidious’ star said: "Was I hoping it would be more? I don’t think so."I mean, I say this as a guy who’s done several ‘Insidious’ movies, several ‘Conjurings’, a couple ‘Aquaman’. It’s not like there’s a stigma to me against sequels. It’s just when you look at the structure of Orm — bad guy in the first one, basically a good guy in the second one — I don’t know where else he goes.

Patrick Wilson on Whether He Wanted to Do More ‘Aquaman’ Movies: “I’m happy with that ship sailing.”

Before becoming a well-known name in movies and TV, Patrick Wilson earned two Tony nominations for his performances in The Full Monty and Oklahoma! in the early 2000s. He also played Raoul in the 2004 film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, starring alongside Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler.
In the years that followed, he stepped away from musicals and took on roles in horror films like Insidious and The Conjuring franchises. He also played Orm (Ocean Master) in the Aquaman movies.
When asked if he wanted more than two Aquaman films, Wilson was honest. ‘Was I hoping it would be more? I don’t think so,’ he said. He explained that Orm had a full arc—villain in the first movie, ally in the second—so he wasn’t sure where else the character could go. He wasn’t signed on for a third film and had no frustration about it.

Robert Englund made his mark on the horror world as the infamous dream-killer Freddy Krueger in the A Night on Elm Street franchise in 1984, where he also briefly crossed paths with not-yet-horror-icon Lin Shaye. While Englund was the burned face of the franchise, Shaye was simply a teacher in the original movie, and she would later gain notoriety for her spine-tingling role in Insidious (2010). After Shaye made a name for herself in the genre, the two horror icons team up again in 2016, where they witness an urban legend come to life in The Midnight Man. They easily become the best part of this somewhat critically panned and contrived horror, making us eagerly await every time they come on-screen to scare the living daylights out of us.

Horror is an incredibly versatile genre, including everything from gory slasher B-movies to taut psychological thrillers. But whether these stories are about supernatural ghouls or bloodthirsty psychopaths, they're equally likely to pack a shocking reveal in their final act. In fact, many even save the beat for the very last scene, sending their shell-shocked audience out to process what they've just witnessed.
A shocking ending isn't an ironclad requirement for horror movies, some films relish showing brutality in full view. But the genre does lend itself to a twist, as a sense of confusion and uncertainty feeds directly into fear and anxiety. When done properly, an amazing twist can completely recontextualize a film and linger with the viewers for years.

Stephen King is one of the most prolific and influential authors of all time, and the authority on the horror and sci-fi genre. His books have been adapted into countless films and television projects, some of them even more than once.
Many iconic filmmakers have attempted to adapt King's works, and some of them were successful, like frequent collaborator Mike Flanagan, and others were not on King's favorite list due to the many changes to their material. One horror veteran auteur who hasn't attempted to adapt one of King's works is James Wan, famous for works like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. In a new appearance on The Kingcast, Wan revealed that the "only" novel for him to adapt is one of King's most ambitious works: The Stand.

According to a new press release, "In a first of its kind, Neon is giving the gift of Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey to all of God’s children by making it available to screen in churches across the country simultaneously with theaters." While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.
And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.
Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. M3GAN 2.0 is set to reach theatres on June 27, 2025, and now we’be gotten our first official teaser, which you can watch embedded above. Recently, Entertainment Weekly unveiled a couple first-look images! You can check them out at the bottom of this article.
Based on a story crafted by producer James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). Johnstone returned to the helm for the sequel, and Cooper has written the script.
The first film has the following synopsis: She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

Although the genre has been booming within the past decade, “elevated horror” has failed to craft any memorable slasher icons that could feasibly stand alongside Michael Myers of “Halloween,” Freddie Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” or Leatherface of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” That’s not to say that there have not been successful horror franchises, as sagas like “Insidious” and “The Conjuring” have been successful in retaining their quality. It’s perhaps the drive for more seriously minded horror films in the vein of “Get Out” or “Hereditary” that has made the slasher subgenre feel less relevant; there’s only so much social satire that can be pulled off in a story about a masked serial killer mowing down innocent people.

This drama truly hones in on Byrne's performance as she steps into the role of Linda, a mother whose life is crashing down around her. The film follows Linda as she struggles with her child's mysterious ailment, a torrid relationship with her therapist, a missing person, and her absent husband, all while experiencing the acute effects of burnout. Sony Pictures on Wednesday said that it is pushing back the release date of its latest Insidious movie a year to August 2026, and in its place dating the Darren Aronofsky-directed Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler.

Remember back in February 2024 when that unlicensed Willy Wonka "experience" in Glasgow brought Scottish children to tears and the internet to tears of laughter? Well, it seems horror fans have been treated to a similar entertainment rug pull with Insidious: The Further You Fear. The show, which was billed as a terrifying, a live immersive horror experience based on the Insidious film franchise, has been canceled after just a few performances.
The show debuted on January 18th in Lafayette, Arkansas and immediately began to draw the ire of audiences that felt duped by the theatrical bait and switch. According to the show's website (which is still active), Fyf is "a ground-breaking, spine-chilling live show" and "is not for those who are easily rattled. It’s created and designed to keep you on the edge of your seat. You, the audience, will play an integral character in the chilling story as...
