Matt Dillon, Alice Diop and Karla Sofia Gascon will bring their springtime spirit to this month’s Nouvelles Vagues Film Festival, now running from June 18 – 23 in Biarritz. Launched last year with the support of Chanel, the nascent festival invites both established and emerging talents to share an expansive vision of youth, hosting a competition dedicated to young adult stories overseen by a jury all under the age of 35.
“Across all sections, this festival shines the spotlight on younger generations and celebrates young characters on screen,” says programing director Lili Hinstin. “We wanted to look to the future through the prism of the next generation, and to interrogate the questions and contemporary issues important to them.”
To that end, this sophomore edition kicked off with the world premiere of “Night Call,” a Brussels-set thriller, taking place over the course of one heated night, foisting an unsuspecting locksmith into a criminal underworld...

Back in 2020 Freefly Systems released the Wave camera. It was the company’s first entry into the slow-motion specialty camera world. Three years later they released Ember which has improved image quality, dynamic range, resolution, and usability – allowing us to capture 4K images at up to 1,000 Fps. “Overall we were really impressed by Ember – the camera delivers an incredible image for its small form factor and price”, tells us filmmaker Tim Sessler from the production company Brooklyn Aerials. Pink Parrot Media has secured a ScreenX format release for the 3D animated family feature Butterfly Tale, which is voiced by Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany and Mena Massoud (Aladdin).
Korea’s Cj 4Dplex and Canadian producer Carpe Diem partnered to show the animated feature in the 270-degree panoramic ScreenX format in North America and internationally. The producers insist Butterfly Tale is the first 3D animated feature to be made in the ScreenX format from the pre-production stage.
Director Sophie Roy said challenges in making an animated ScreenX film included camera work and lighting. “Keeping the horizon equal throughout the three screens when the camera tilts was especially difficult and matching the light direction on all three screens took some serious work to make it all look seamless, a real challenge, but the results exceeded our expectations,” Roy said in a statement.

Gaspar Noé, the French director known for his provocative and experimental films, has announced his next project. The film, which is still untitled, will star Cate Blanchett and Franz Rogowski as the lead actors. The film is currently in pre-production and Noé is scouting locations in Putignano, Italy.
Noé is one of the most acclaimed and controversial filmmakers of his generation. His films, such as “Irreversible”, “Enter the Void” and “Climax”, have explored themes of violence, sexuality, death and transcendence with a distinctive visual style and narrative structure. His latest film, “Vortex”, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, was a departure from his previous works. Update: Unfortunately, we’ve heard from Gaspar Noé that the casting update is incorrect. We’ll stay tuned for official updates on his next project.
After exploring sex, drugs, and death in his three previous features, where Gaspar Noé will head next is unknown. However, today we’ve learned he’ll likely be doing it with two of the greatest actors working today.
Following up 2021’s Vortex, the Paris-based Argentine director is now scouting for his next project in Putignano, Italy and, if one of his friends is to be believed, he has cast the formidably fierce pairing of Cate Blanchett and Franz Rogowski to star in the film.
While no other details have been unveiled, it will mark the first time the thespians from the school of Malick will work together as Blanchett comes off some of the best notices of her career following Tár and Rogowski is on...

As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

Netflix has swooped on “Vortex,” the event drama-fantasy series which recently launched on France Televisions and garnered stellar ratings. The limited series will be available on Netflix in 190 countries starting June 2.
