Summoned by the police to the scene of a car crash,wealthy architect Peter Manson recalls events from months earlier. Married to counsellor Cassie,he has a strong,almost obsessive bond with sixth former daughter Prue and is not happy to learn that Prue is pregnant by her former English teacher,the arrogant Gavin,whom she intends to marry. Peter wants Gavin arrested but Cassie feels this would alienate their daughter,who admits that she only applied to university to please Peter and is happy with Gavin. Peter confides in Sarah,his new intern at work and later begins a sexual affair with her. Gavin,now a manual worker,rips up the cheque offered him by Peter to leave Prue. He also shows himself capable of extreme domestic violence towards his new wife.

Peter continues his affair with Sarah whilst resenting Gavin,whom he knows to have hit Prue and who he believed followed her from one school to another. He has him checked out by a private eye who stabs him and puts him in hospital, where he is visited by Cassie,who ends up kissing him. Prue is intrigued by her husband's tattoo of 'Paula',the same name Peter calls in his sleep. She learns that Paula died in Yorkshire,Gavin's native area and where he has a new job waiting.She visits Peter's mother Nellie in Yorkshire - she knew Gavin and speaks well of him.Meanwhile Peter's firm is in financial straits and Sarah feels they should break up their affair.

Peter,facing financial ruin,admits to Cassie of his affair whilst Gavin tells Prue that Paula was Peter's illegitimate daughter,whom he rejected and who was fostered with Gavin's family. On Gavin's advice she went to see Peter as a teenager but he turned her away and she was later murdered. Obsessed with Paula,Gavin decided he would marry her little half-sister but admits he is too damaged to fully love Prue,though he has tried. A shocked and distraught Prue drives away from the flat and soon afterwards she has a car crash. Will she or her unborn child survive? And can a balloon trip given as a birthday present save the Mansons' marriage?
