At first glance, Variety‘s exclusive scoop announcing Alicia Silverstone’s next film seemed to me to be signalling the actress’s return to the big screen. A quick scour over her IMDb page and it turns out I was mistaken; she’s not been away, but has instead been channeling her inner comedian into dodgy TV movies and straight-to-vid fodder. Could today’s news out of the American Film Market turn all of that around? With a title like Who Gets The Dog? it’s not looking good.
For the Epic Pictures and 2Ds co-venture, Silverstone will presumably take the lead role for a story which “follows a divorcing couple who are fighting over custody of their beloved dog.” What strikes me as odd is the choice of director the producers have deemed a perfect fit for this type of lightweight frivolity. Steven C. Miller, whose resume suggests he...

Note: if you saw Leprechaun's Revenge on Syfy earlier this year then you've already seen Red Clover. It just has a new title and some decent gore tossed back in.
The Syfy Channel churns out so many low-budget movies that it's really easy to lose track of them all -- and it's particularly difficult to recall the titles of the ones that aren't 100% disposable junkpiles suitable only for late-night inebriated visitations. Budget is the key problem with most of the Syfy movie fare, but sometimes (no, frequently) a low budget is what inspires fun-loving filmmakers to get a little more creative. That's not to say that their recent release Red Clover (aka Leprechaun's Revenge, although it bears no relation to the "official" Leprechaun franchise) is any sort of minor masterpiece -- but, like early Syfy releases Scream of the Banshee, Zombie Apocalypse, High Plains Invaders, and Frankenfish, it finds a...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director: Steven C. Miller. Writer: Eric Stolze. Cast: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, Peter Holden, Musetta Vander, and Kelcie Stranahan. This film fan has seen each of Steven C. Miller's films. From the zombie flick Automaton Transfusion (2006) to the witchy Scream of the Banshee (2011), Miller's horror films have been varied, especially in quality. His latest is a creature feature titled Under the Bed. This film was developed from Eric Stolze's (I Heart Shakey) script. And, this film is underdeveloped on several levels. Filmed over the course of twelve days, with a minuscule budget, Under the Bed offers very little in the form of a cohesive story and any sense of a creature mythology. This viewer was surprised at how easily the plot for this film could be summed up. Basically, two brothers fight off a creature,...

Under the Bed directed by Steven C. Miller (the same director as the Silent Night remake as well as the SyFy film Scream of the Banshee and the poorly put together zombie film Automation Transfusion) takes on the monster under the bed theme from the standpoint of an aftermath Neil Hausman (Johnny Weston) battled a certain monster years ago and burned down his house and lost his mother in the process. What complicates matters is that nobody believes his story about the lurker under his bed but years of therapy were unable to dissuade the youngster of the reality of his battle.

During the 1980s, one movie managed to piss off film critics, the Parent-Teacher Association, and frighten children everywhere. "Silent Night, Deadly Night" portrayed Santa Claus as an unhinged young man named Billy who was tormented by the death of his parents and an abusive nun at the orphanage he called home. The 1984 slasher spawned an entire series of killer Santa films, and now "Scream of the Banshee" director Steven C. Miller is remaking the movie, expected to hit theaters on November 30. Genre vet Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King, Jamie Kennedy, and Ellen Wong are a few of the poor souls who will face Santa's wrath.
Dread Central has the trailer for the cheery holiday flick. We think we prefer the old Santa's signature weapon, an ax, rather than the blowtorch featured here. It almost makes Santa look a little steampunk, especially with those creepy eye-goggles. What do you think?

Ever wondered how the classic John Hughes film Home Alone would have turned out if Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin McAllister had swapped his toy cars for a sawn-off shotgun?
The answer can be found in violent indie thriller The Aggression Scale, coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay on September 3, 2012.
Described as Home Alone meets Rambo, it sees Owen Rutledge take on a posse of hitmen sent to terrorise his family over an outstanding debt. The gang doesn't know young Owen has an emotionally-disturbed background of violent behaviour.
From up-and-coming genre director Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee, Zombie Transfusion), the film is written by Ben Powell (Satanic).
It reunites Twins Peaks actors Ray Wise (pictured; Mad Men; the secretary of state in X-Men: First Class) and Dana Ashbrook (TV series Crash and The Kill Point), and also features Derek Mears (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,...

The latest in the line of direct-to-dvd horror movies from the After Dark stable is a supernatural/torture porn hybrid called Cassadaga.
Having seen a few of their ‘Originals’ (link to previous reviews, Scream Of The Banshee and The Task, I wasn’t expecting much - however this was a little more coherent and even contained some scares. Whether this is down to the fact that it wasn’t made by a newbie (director Anthony Diblasi previously made the Clive Barker adaptation Dread) I can’t say, but it certainly felt more like a ‘real’ film.
Cassadaga stars Kelen Coleman as Lily, a deaf art teacher who loses her younger sister in a car accident in the early stages of the film. Spurred on by this tragic event Lily decides to enrol in a course at Cassadaga University and finds board at the house of an old lady named Claire...

After premiering at SXSW this year, Steven C. Miller’s (“Scream of the Banshee”) action/thriller/crime film “The Aggression Scale” has been garnering some buzz. A gritty new clip embedded below is only going to further that. “The Aggresssion Scale” is about a gang of heavily armed hitmen and a pair of teens battling over $500,000 in illicit cash. That’s a promising enough set up, and this glimpse at the film is pretty righteous. There’s a giant dude mauling a teenage girl, and a little guy that’s not afraid to club a man in the skull with an aluminum baseball bat. “The Aggression Scale” has a solid cast. Ray Wise (“RoboCop”) plays a crime lord, and Derek Mears (“Friday the 13th”) is a hulk of a man and plays one hell of an intimidating goon. Add Dana Ashbrook from “Twin Peaks” into the mix as a gangster...

This just in from the Not Another Pointless Remake, Oh Yes Another Pointless Remake desk: Malcolm McDowell, who apparently has tax problems or wants to add a hot tub to his pool or something, has signed to star in Silent Night, the forthcoming remake of 1984's notorious Santa slasher flick, Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Variety is reporting that Silent Night, which will be directed by Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee) and written by Jayson Rothwell (Malice in Wonderland), will be a "loose" remake. So if you're a devoted fan of the original movie, you can be either extremely outraged or barely outraged. Or, like the rest of humanity, you can just stare blankly, shake your head slowly and utter a snide aside along the lines of "of course" or "because why not."
Apparently, the focus of the new version of this horrific holiday classic will shift the focus...

"The Aggression Scale" is like "Home Alone" with more death. If only it were as good a time as that description might lead you to believe. Directed by Steven C. Miller, who last made the Syfy Original "Scream of the Banshee," the movie is a schlocky pleasure when it finally gets around to delivering on its premise of a dysfunctional teen with violent tendencies taking on a group of thugs. But the build to that point is long, overly serious and reliant on actors and dialogue that aren't up to holding the screen through extended periods of talking or layering on of atmosphere. Character development is a quality of which genre films are often seriously in need, but it feels more like filler when your characters make no sense to begin with and most of them are just slaughter fodder.

SyFy's latest creature, Leprechaun's Revenge, is coming - of course - on March 17th and the first trailer has been released.
Starring Billy Zane and William Devane, the story picks up days before the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. A teenage girl unwittingly unleashes a murderous leprechaun upon the citizens of a small town. The creature goes on a violent rampage, slaughtering descendants of the original settlers who stole its gold. Now the girl and her family have four days to kill the leprechaun – otherwise she will die from the leprechaun curse.
Leprechaun’s Revenge is a production of After Dark Films and was scripted by Anthony C. Ferrante (Scream of the Banshee). Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold also star.
Drew Daywalt directs and, honestly, this looks like it's a cut above the usual SyFy fare.

Back last October the Afm had listed the intriguingly entitled SyFy production 'Leprecahn' to their site. Most likely due to a spelling error the Drew Daywalt directed project was soon touting a seemingly endless range of alternative titles. Soon thereafter it became 'Red Clover' and then 'St. Patrick's Day Leprechaun' and then finally decided to settle on 'Leprechaun's Revenge'. The movie has no ties to the 'Leprechaun' horror franchise that stars Warwick Davis ('Life's Too Short') but will premiere on SyFy next month on Saturday, 17 March at 9pm - St Patrick's Day. Billy Zane -below ('Dead Calm'), William Devane, Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold all star in the production penned by Anthony C. Ferrante ('House of Bones', 'Scream of the Banshee')....

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that things are not gonna end on a happy note for the characters of Steven C. Miller’s “The Aggression Scale”. Miller, the director of zombie film “Automaton Transfusion” and the Syfy Channel original movie “Scream of the Banshee”, will be hitting SXSW next month with his home invasion flick, which will pit four heavily armed hitmen and two “unusual teenagers” against each over over $500,000 in stolen cash. Though if you only saw the trailer below, you might think the film is just about four guys with shotguns invading a family’s home just as the family is moving in. You might think that, but you’d be wrong. The film has since been picked up by Anchor Bay Entertainment, who apparently liked it enough that they didn’t feel like waiting for the movie to land in Austin...

It's hitmen versus teenagers in The Aggression Scale, one of the high-octane flicks playing in the SXSW Midnighters program. The film has a fabulous genre pedigree, with stars Ray Wise (Reaper), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) and Fabienne Therese (John Dies at the End), and directed by Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion, Scream of the Banshee) off a script by Ben Powell (Satanic). Okay, I'm sold. After the jump, check out an exclusive image from the film, as well as the full trailer. Editors Note: It was just announced that The Agression Scale was picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay.

While the world continues to wonder if Warwick Davis will ever don his leprechaun garb again, After Dark Originals and Syfy are teaming up to bring a different killer leprechaun to life in Red Clover. Billy Zane and William Devane better stock up on Lucky Charms cereal pronto.
This Syfy flick originally titled both St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun and just simply Leprechaun (or Leprecahn as the American Film Market website initially misspelled it) has now undergone yet another title change to Red Clover, as was just announced by director Drew Daywalt on his Facebook page.
Daywalt is best known for a series of horror short films and for having directed a few episodes of MTV’s “Death Valley”. Red Clover will mark his first foray into feature filmmaking. The script was penned by fellow horror filmmaker Anthony C. Ferrante (Boo!, Scream of the Banshee).

It was revealed last November that shorts helmer Drew Daywalt would be making his directorial debut on Leprechaun, a new SyFy Channel production penned by Anthony Ferrante (Boo!, Scream of the Banshee). The director updated his Facebook page revealing that the newly titled Red Clover will star none other than Billy Zane, William Devane, Kelly Washington, Courtney Halverson, Azure Parsons, Matty Ferraro and Kevin Mangold. A perfect SyFy Channel cast. "Sixty-six years ago, the town of Irish Channel in Louisiana was the site of a horrible massacre on St. Patricks Day. While not as popular as Batman, Spider-Man or Captain America, the comic book Area 52 has seen a great deal of interest from Hollywood since Image published the four-issue series in 2001. The comic, follows the rag-tag staff of Area 52, a storage facility in Antarctica where top secret artifacts and alien weaponry are stored after Area 51 has finished testing them. The group is tested, themselves, once an alien escapes its containment.

Scream of the Banshee writer, Anthony Ferrante, is back with a new film, Haunted High . This one he co-wrote with Paul A. Birkett and is being directed for SyFy by Jeffrey Lando. Danny Trejo, M.C. Gainey, Charisma Carpenter and Jonathan Baron star. Gainey plays a demonic headmaster of Holloman Academy, a New England school. Baron plays the young man who must take him on in order to save the learning institution. Carpenter is a "sexy librarian" and Trejo will play a janitor (yikes). A limited theatrical run may happen before Haunted High hits SyFy.

Scream of the Banshee is the second of two After Dark ‘Originals' released this summer, the other being the previously reviewed The Task. The difference with this film is that it is quite clearly co-produced by SyFy, which is not necessarily a bad thing - since they know how to make programmes and straight-to-television films look decent.
Going into this film having enjoyed The Task - despite its many, many flaws - I was hoping to get either something similar or, God forbid, a good, well-scripted and produced low-budget horror. What I got, unfortunately, was something similar. It is obviously a television movie (you can tell because the score ends at the same time as the scene...ready for an ad break) which doesn’t automatically make it crap – see Tommy Lee Wallace's novel-adaptation, It – but throw in the SyFy moniker and the bar suddenly lowers.
Starring a couple of well known faces,...
