For a TV movie, then "Monsterwolf" wasn't too bad. Well, let me rephrase that, it could have been worse.
The story told in "Monsterwolf" is sort of interesting; a spirit wolf is summoned to seek revenge for a wrong-doing against native Indian people. And the wolf is indestructible. Now, I am not overly familiar with Indian lore and legends, so I have no idea whether to be skeptic or embrace this idea. But as for a movie plot, it worked well enough.
"Monsterwolf" wasn't too shabby on the effects and CGI. Sure there were moments where the wolf looked kinda weird, but in general it worked well enough.
The cast in "Monsterwolf" was also good enough, for this particular type of movie. The movie was carried on the shoulders of Jason London (playing Yale) and Marc Macaulay (playing sheriff Bennett). There were other good actors/actresses on the list as well, but London and Macaulay were the ones most memorable.
"Monsterwolf" isn't particularly scary despite it being listed as a horror movie. I will go as far as saying it is not even a thriller. But still, the movie did keep me entertained for the entire feature length. However, it is not the type of movie that I will be making a second time back to.

I do have an in general intense dislike for Syfy's movies, so I was expecting Monsterwolf, judging from its somewhat cash-in title, to be of poor quality. Actually, Monsterwolf was better than I expected. The film does have some good photography and scenery, had an interesting idea and the film does start off very well. However, as an overall film it is not very good. I did like the idea very much, but the story here is executed in a ridiculous and predictable manner, complete with some inane ideas such as how the guns were handled and the whole back-story involving Maria. The film for Syfy doesn't look too bad photography wise, but while the effects are not as shoddy as you would expect they are largely inconsistent with the design of the wolf throughout being rather hit-and-miss. On top of that, the script is often generic, the characters are cardboard cut-outs and the actors overall don't connect to their characters. The direction is derivative too, and while not as meandering or as boring as other Syfy projects, the pace particularly in the middle can be dull. All in all, better than I thought but in all honesty it isn't a good movie. 3/10 Bethany Cox

I just finished watching this on the Sci Fr Channel. Needless to say, I have insomnia. The channel has made and broadcast several awful films over the years. However, some of them are so awful, they're fun. This one is about some kind of native American werewolf who is awakened when an oil drilling company tries to buy land from a tribe in southern Louisiana, then breaks its word and drills without their consent. This one turned out to be above average for that network. The special effects are surprisingly good and the actors are competent. Also the script is slightly more logical than usual for these people. I also got a little bit of local flavor, with the scenery and music being good enough. I'm not saying it's a good film. I'm certainly not recommending it. But it was a few notches better than most of their work.

Unscrupulous oil company boss Stark (Robert Picardo) orders his workmen to blast an ancient Indian artifact with C4 explosives, unleashing Monsterwolf, a vicious, shoddily-rendered, CGI animal spirit dedicated to defending native Americans in their time of need.
Monsterwolf doesn't like workmen. Monsterwolf doesn't like litterbugs. Monsterwolf doesn't like sell-outs. Monsterwolf doesn't like drunk drivers. Monsterwolf doesn't like being hit by a truck. Monsterwolf doesn't like mercenaries. Monsterwolf doesn't like Stark. And I sure as hell didn't like Monsterwolf, yet another crappy, low budget SyFy production sent to test the patience of horror fans.
Poor performances, a generic script, dreadful direction and cheezy special effects all go to make this one hell of a chore to sit through. A heavy-handed score works hard to inject some urgency and excitement into proceedings but is woefully unsuited to the lacklustre action. Worst of all, perhaps, is a truly amateurish animated sequence that tells of the Indian legend of the Monsterwolf.
2.5 out of 10, generously rounded up to 3 for Leonor Varela as tasty tattooed hotshot lawyer Maria, who swaps her power-suit for a tight white vest to battle the beast, and for Jon Eyez' laughable performance as hired killer Coughlin, the actor doing a half-assed impression of Ving Rhames from Pulp Fiction for his role.

Fairly average low budget monster romp, with the Doctor actor from Star Trek Voyager (Robert Picardo) and some native American stuff thrown in.
Evil oilman wants to drill on Indian land, Indian spirit of giant wolf gets revenge. Woman gets saved etc.
The wolf effects are cheap, the environmental message is a bit trite, and the native Americans are cliché, but hey it's what you expect.
It's not worth buying on DVD, but if it's on the television and you have some time to kill (no pun intended), you might find it quite a fun way to spend an hour and a half.
I think my favourite bit is when the villain tells the Indian chief that his views are "unamerican"!

Not scary. Most of the film is a soap opera about small town girl Maria having left for New York City, now returning to reconnect with old boyfriend and realize that There's No Place Like Home.
Other reviewers have listed this film's many idiocies. I'll list some that haven't been mentioned yet:
* Maria is an attorney for an evil oil company. In the middle of the film, she announces that she's changing sides. She's quitting her client, and intends to represent the other side.
In real life, Maria would be disbarred for that. You can't represent one side in a dispute, then switch to the other side in the same dispute. It violates attorney-client privilege. Maria would know her first client's plans, legal strategies, strengths and weaknesses, etc.
* Maria is attacked by the wolf in the middle of the night. By the time the police are there, taking her statement, it must be well past midnight. Then two women (one of them a teenager) show up with a fruit basket to make Maria feel better.
Huh? How did they know that Maria had just been attacked? Shouldn't they be asleep at home? And what's a teenage girl doing coming out so late, to pick up a fruit basket from the grocery store to take to Maria?
The writer wanted to show that small town folk care about Maria, inspiring her change of heart. But an intelligent writer would have set that scene for the next day.

I am an avid watcher of SyFy's original movies and always find myself laughing at the how poorly made the films are, so when I finished watching Monsterwolf on Saturday night, I have to admit that SyFy has stepped it up with this one! Sure, the CGI wolf was laughable at times, but overall the effects were pretty good, the cast was great, the script was fun, and some of the locations were beautiful. I hope to see more quality movies like this from SyFy as I was a little concerned about the future of the Saturday night premieres after some of the recent releases. The frustrating thing for me when I typically watch these movies is that it is pretty clear that they don't care if the movie looks good, don't care about the effects, don't care about the acting. It was nice to feel like SyFy actually cared about making a good movie! Haha.

MONSTERWOLF certainly takes some beating in terms of poor quality, and so far this must rank as the worst SyFy Channel monster flick I've watched. The film has virtually no redeeming values, and is completely devoid of originality and a single interesting or exciting moment.
The loose storyline involves a giant, indestructible wolf, the product of some Native American legend, running rampant through the streets of a small town. The people responsible are the usual epitome of corporate greed, an oil drilling company who've unwittingly unleashed the beast on their latest dig. What follows is entirely ordinary, as the wolf munches on some poor actors and proves impervious - as always - to ordinary firearms.
Mired in this mess are a desperate-looking Robert Picardo, a guy you have to feel sorry for after his appearances in these Z-grade flicks. Elsewhere we get erstwhile hero duties from a tired-looking Jason London; he looks so rough here that I had to double check to make sure it really was him. I guess the toll of making so many poor movies has taken its toll on the actor, but hey, it's a job. Just a very bad one.

That is right I got this movie for 50 P on Blu Ray. I wondered how bad it could be. This was before I worked out I had just bought a Sci fi Channel movie.
It has Robert Picardo from Voyager in it. He hams it up really rather well. Also The utterly gorgeous Leonor Varela. Not only can she act but she is also the main reason I liked this movie.
The story is typical nonsense. A spiritual wolf is protecting the ancient Indian burial ground gets lets loose evil frackers and oil workers. Who will win the battle between the monster wolf and them, etc. We have all heard it before.
They effects department switches between some pretty ropey cgi and what looks to be a prosthetic head. It conveys the monster is out there. That is about as good as it gets.
The acting is first rate for what it a fun attempt at a horror flick. This is a average action horror movie.
Also it stars Leonor Varela who is gorgeous. It is worth watching if it comes on the horror channel or the Sci fi channel.

It's basically about a Native American shapeshifter or spirit wolf who protects his area it's ironically from those destroying the environment and Native American habitat. It's the last Native American in the area that can destroy the werewolf.
The acting is pretty good in this one. The CGI is OK - it's actually not bad. The story, is merely OK - it's not great but it's not all that bad either. I find this one somewhere in the middle. It's not too bad for a made for TV movie - hey at least they created a werewolf movie lol.
If you like werewolf movies and have seen most of them already - I would say go ahead and watch this one to check off your I have seen this werewolf movie list.

HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME,(4) and today we review ..... the boy who cried monster wolf ...the movie !!!!!!!
Now 2010 sci fi wolf monster creature feature film starring captain pocard-o .....and that one guy who youve seen in tons of movies BUT you always get confused for that OTHER guy that looks the exact same and is in TONS of movies .... YEA "THAT "guy .... oh and also it stars some chick .... yup ... thats the cast .... lol.... very memorable people ....seriously though ... the one guy was in war-treck ? ... or battlestargate 9 ? ....maybe that xxxfiles one ? I dont know some nerd show lol.......
but here we have an over all basic creature feature with solid pacing .... it gives you a monster wolf pretty early on and keeps it coming back regularly instead of the classic last 10 minutes the monster shows up ...so thats nice... it keeps the film moving ....HOWEVER the cgi ....leaves a little to be desired but can be forgiven considering the era of its creation ..2010 was still that limbo zone of "how low can , (your pocket book go)" and still get cgi on screen .... sadly it usually had this kind of out come ....personally, practical FX is gold ....but seeing a terrible puppet on screen for me ALWAYS beats a terrible cgi monster lol....this cgi had some decent moments but also some ....meh ....maybe not so decent moments ....
acting was solid overall on level for these sci fi saturday flick style movies .... and all the technical aspects were well done, sound lighting etc ....
the story wasnt anything really new ...kind of a classic "person comes back to small town" then re-ignites lost love team up to fight evil ....yadda yadda ...my issue is this ....and spoiler ????
The mythological story went .... dude sacrifices himself to become wolf .... other dude sacrifices HIMSELF to kill evil revenge wolf and carry his soul to the otherside thus ending the terror of monster wolf centuries ago...... - fast forward to the end of the movie - .... chick dies in order to "carry the revenge wolf to the other side ?" ...BUT then they bring her back to life to have happily ever after ending ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Thats literally NOT how they said you have to do it .... they obviously didnt read the instructions on the cave wall ...lol...
shame on you .... if that was to be the case WHY even write that in the story then ? ..just say hey you use some magic thing to kill wolf ... BAM no threat of her death and pow ..happy ending ... the "fake out" ending held NOTHING for us as the audience because we already knew better ...DUH dont treat us like were dumb .... i mean most of us are BUT still ... honeslty i would have respected this film hard core IF she would have just died like it WAS WRITTEN IN THE LITERALLY STORY THEY WERE TOLD HAD TO HAPPEN !!!!!!!!!!!! ....
over all was it entertaining ? ...
i mean yea it was okay, .... honestly if they would have done a practical FX, and fixed that plot hole big enough to get your car stuck in .....then i would give this one a bit more but as it stands its entertaining enough to watch once..BUT i have about 30 more werewolf/giant wolf like films i would put infront of this one to watch a second time around first....
5/10.

(2010) Monster Wolf
HORROR
Produced by the Syfy channel At the opening, has a bunch of oil drilling workers savagely killed behind a metal fence by a prehistoric wolf, opened as a result of a discovered portal and were instructed by phone to blow it up by the head, Stark (Robert Picardo) of Holter ex oil inc.. A defense layer, Maria Bennett (Leonor Varela) then comes back after three years to small town Crowley, Louisiana. And she revisits her dad (Marc Macaulay) who is the sergeant deputy sheriff, and her ex-boyfriend, Yale (Jason London) and former friend, Chase (Griff Furst). As viewers find out that it is not just any wolf, for it has the ability to leap very high as well as appear and disappear whenever it wants, as well as mull anyone through a jell cell. Eventually seeking explanations and knowledge how to kill the wolf from tribal Indian chief, Turner (Steve Reevis) since bullets does not do it.
A few things, it is supposed to be a horror film, and there isn't a single thing that is scary about it. I can give credit to the unique style and revelations, but the fake looking and obvious CGI gears more toward a TV movie than as a theatrical one.

Returning to her hometown, a woman working on a pending legal matter with the local Indian group finds herself in the middle of a rampage by a supernatural creature that has a long history with the tribe and must race to stop it before the whole town is killed.
This here was quite a fun and exciting Sci-Fi Channel offering. As to be expected here, this one really gets fun here with all of the attack and confrontations throughout here, which again comes with the long, involved action scenes and the quick, shorter ambushes which enable the plot to keep such a steady pace. The shorter ones are a lot of fun, from the ambushes on the litterer in the forest as the phantom attack sets up the failed barricade and eventual attack inside the trailer, while other fun shorter attacks include the ambush on her home as holding it off and finally getting away are quite fun and the trap at the police state gets some suspenseful stalking to go along with the great kill. Along with these, the film also manages to get a lot out of its longer scenes here, starting with the great fun of the awakening as it emerges from the ruins towards the group of works and chases them into the pit where it slaughters the crew, a really fine ambush in the woods where it stalks a group of hunters with little difficulty and the later mercenary team attack that features the final round of attacks and gun-play against the creature which gives this one some really enjoyable action. This one also works in the big finale as well with the creature having some fun with the guards before being taken out in a fine display of action that ends this one on a positive note. This one also manages to get some pretty good times here in the titular creature, not only in terms of its' wolf-like design and figure but also the absolutely fun back-story here that actually comes off rather intriguing by tying this into the Native American legends of vengeance which captures some interesting bits that give this a really interesting part of the film. Along with the bloody kills and gore throughout here, these here give this quite an enjoyable time here which is enough to hold out the few minor flaws. The main thing holding this one down is the lengthy and overlong opening, which tends to go a little too long in the reuniting part the past section of her returning back to town as meeting up with everyone as she settles in or shows the friends hanging out in a bar together. These are just a little too long to make much of an impression on the pace here. The other big flaw here is the per-usual CGI on display for the wolf, which is constantly way too blurry and out-of-focus to get much going here for what it's trying to show since this blocks out a lot of the detail that could've made it look a little better, along with all the usual problems here with the special differences, size changing and inability to connect with anything around. This is so expected that it's not nearly as detrimental as it should've been. Along with a few lame attacks in here that are too dark to see, these here are all that hold this one back.
Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Language.
