Hannah Marks started acting when she was 6 years old, after seeing her mother’s acting reel. And she’s pretty much worked nonstop, from roles in the films “Accepted” and “The Runaways” to the cast of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” In fact, just last year she took her first vacation — though she confesses to recording several self-tapes during it.
In recent years, she has also made a (forgive me) mark behind the camera as a filmmaker, beginning with writing and directing “After Everything,” The indie film starred Jeremy Allen White as a young man diagnosed with bone cancer who embarks on a new relationship, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in 2018.

“Turtles All the Way Down” was always going to be a tricky movie to get right. Based on a popular, well-reviewed 2017 book of the same name by YA maestro John Green, the story follows Aza (Isabela Merced) a girl with sometimes-crippling Ocd — in addition to regular Being a Teen problems. It’s a beautiful story, but not one that necessarily screams blockbuster.
Green himself — who oversaw adaptions of his work like “Paper Towns” and “Looking for Alaska” and serves as an EP on “Turtles” — was hesitant about selling the rights to adapt it, he recalled to IndieWire.
“It was hard for me to imagine that a good movie could be made from the book,” Green said. “Also, Hollywood has a long history of depicting Ocd terribly. But because the producers were people I had such confidence in, I felt like we could at least give it a shot.”
Also helping his confidence?...

New Line Cinema & Temple Hill have unveiled an official trailer for a new movie titled Turtles All the Way Down, a romantic comedy coming-of-age film from filmmaker Hannah Marks (also of After Everything and Mark Mary & Some Other People previously). Isabela Merced stars as Aza, who is riddled with crushing anxiety all the time; she's joined by Cree, Felix Mallard, Maliq Johnson, Poorna Jagannathan, Judy Reyes, and J. Smith-Cameron.

After Everything, directed by Castille London, is the saga of Hardin Scott and Tessa Young, who were in a relationship from their college days. Just like any other relationship, they went through their own ups and downs, and the turned borderline toxic. This compelled Tessa to end their relationship once and for all. The fourth film in the series ended with the couple ending their long-term relationship to pursue their individual lives. Tessa could sense their relationship becoming toxic by the day and the amount of pain both were inflicting on each other. After Ever Happy ended with Hardin releasing his book, even though Tessa was furious to see him use their love story to sell his books. The fifth film, and possibly the last one in the series, had Hardin going on a cathartic journey that would also help him finish the sequel to his very popular first book,...

When “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) opened on Christmas Day, it grossed over $18 million, fueled by marketing campaign that focused on group sales to attract its core audiene. Its total was $40 above what “Les Miserables” did on December 25, 2012 (its opening day) before it grossed nearly $150 million in the U.S./Canada.
Unfortunately for the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel (and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie), the operation was a success but the patient did less well. Through three weeks of play, despite an A Cinemascore suggesting strong audience response, it has grossed only $58 million, barely three times its opening day. The recent weekend, its third, took in under $2 million after losing almost two-thirds of its theaters.
On Tuesday, after 22 days in theaters, it will become the first holiday release to reach home audiences on PVOD (at $19.99 to rent). Perhaps it can find greater success there.

As expected, Netflix had a quick hit on its hands this weekend: David Fincher’s “The Killer” was an immediate #1 on the streamer. Credit the genre and star Michael Fassbender for giving it a boost that even top directors like Fincher don’t always guarantee.
After all, even Fincher’s first Netflix film, “Mank,” wasn’t a hit. His second offering for the streamer is immediately doing far better than his 2019 black-and-white biopic. Despite good reviews — and eventual Oscar nominations — “Mank” made Netflix’s top 10 for just one day and it only ranked at #10.
As for “The Killer,” its action appeal, a lead actor not known for streaming originals, and elevated festival attention all seem to have contributed to its immediate ascension to #1. It replaced “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” with Sony’s big summer hit still #2.

Five recent releases debuted on different VOD charts this past week, and for the second week in a row, three different films took #1 among the three we follow. Two of these took #1 slots, with “Sound of Freedom” (Angel) atop Vudu and #2 at iTunes, while “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) reversing those positions at those two sites.
Google Play, which often lags behind the others seems particularly slow this week, with “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) still #1 even though it doesn’t make the top five at the other two. And “Paw Patrol” ranks only fourth, with “Sound of Freedom” seventh.
Netflix is back in Sony streamer mode, with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” #1 and “Insidious: The Red Door” #2 (both new this week). But two recent festival-premiered originals took the two new spots. “Sly” (Stallone of course), a documentary, and “Nyad,” about the pioneering swimmer Diane Nyad with Annette Bening, are third and fourth respectively there.

“The Equalizer 3” (Sony) debuted on PVOD at $19.99 with #1 placement at both iTunes and Vudu. It’s #5 at Google Play, which seems to be lagging worse than usual; its titles haven’t changed in four days, which likely affects some rankings.
Meantime, “Fair Play,” the relationship thriller that premiered to acclaim at Sundance last January, is an immediate #1 at Netflix. The streamer paid $20 million for worldwide rights, a bargain against the production costs for other Netflix Originals.
The Denzel Washington franchise, currently #8 in theaters with $86 million domestic gross, added PVOD after 32 days. “The Nun II” (Warner Bros.), currently #7 at the box office with $81 million, arrived a week sooner at 25 days at $19.99. It is #2 at Vudu (which lists by revenue) and lags elsewhere: It’s #5 at iTunes and #10 at Google Play.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin is having a serious case of writer's block. In an exclusive scene from "After Everything," his character, Hardin, is pressured by his publisher to release his second book after receiving a sizable cash advance.
"You have a tiny window of relevance and it's dwindling every day," the publisher tells him, to which Hardin quips, "Can't rush greatness, can you?"
"I can when I've given you a quarter-million dollar advance," she responds.
"After Everything" is the fifth and final installment in the After franchise. Directed by Castille Landon, the film finds Hardin and Tessa (Josephine Langford) living separate lives following the release of Hardin's revealing book, which Tessa knew nothing about. As a result, Hardin returns to his old ways, drinking and engaging in other harmful habits.
"I thought you were sober?" Hardin's publisher asks him in the clip.
"I was," he responds, before lifting up his drink and cheers-ing with her.

August theatrical releases were a bit sparse, but “Partner Track,” “Lost Ollie” and seven other book-based projects found their way onto streamers last month, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” September has more theatrical releases, but fewer book adaptations to look forward to. Those that are coming out this month have rich history though, especially “The Rings of Power” series that Amazon has based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books and appendices.
There’s also “The Silent Twins” starring Letitia Wright and Jodhi May as well as Andrew Dominik’s feature film “Blonde” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ book about the career of Marilyn Monroe.
Here are six book to screen adaptations coming out in September:
