- Told from a female's perspective, CAN YOU HEAR ME? is set against the backdrop of the First World War and is a haunting romantic Ghost story from the heart of Edwardian England. Samuel an American Officer, arrives in England in 1918 on his way to the battlefront in France. He visits the village of his British Mother's birth where he has inherited an important country estate. There he meets Annabel the beautiful daughter of a local landowner. During their passionate romance Samuel and Annabel fall in love and marry on the day before his departure to the Great War. Samuel is presumably killed in action. So how can he be back home with Annabel? How is she apparently living a normal life with him? Is he a Deserter? The film marks a farewell to the carefree days of Belle Epoque. It follows a beautiful young woman (Annabel) with a loving heart and progressive spirit, who nurses her father, Sir John, a man of the 'old guard' to his untimely death, while her brother Fredrick , fighting at the Front, is captured and imprisoned by the enemy. Our Heroine Annabel unexpectedly meets Samuel a handsome American Officer, unlike anyone she has encountered before, who captures her heart. Following a fast moving romance, the two marry during his two week leave, before he joins his regiment in France. While he's away a fearful, intuitive, Annabel dreams her husband is killed in action. But far from being fantasy, unfortunately Samuel actually has been shot dead on the Battlefield. In a desperate attempt to be granted more time on Earth , he makes a bargain with the Almighty with his last breath, and days later his Spirit returns home to his new Wife. Initially the Lovers' reunion is a happy one, but as time passes Annabel suspects Samuel may have suffered some short term memory loss. However, Samuel's Spirit slowly recovers his memory as he remembers his plea to God for more time.i.e. "until the bell tolls" and finally realizes the gravity of his plight. While Annabel, who discovers she is with child with Samuel, for a time remains quite unaware that she is living with Samuel's Ghost. Finally, on the day of the Armistice-the War's end, our Heroine receives an official telegram confirming the devastating news of her Husband's death, whereupon her world falls apart. Yet, whilst Samuel's Spirit seems to have vanished from view, with the return of her Brother and the prospect of a new life, Annabel finds the will she needs to continue her life with her(and Samuel's) Daughter Alice.
