Godzilla is stomping into New York Comic Con.
The event, which will be held at the Javits Convention Center in New York City from Oct. 17 to 20, always has a wonderful selection of panels and booths where you can pick up your favorite pop culture artifacts. Funko and its subsidiaries, Mondo and Loungefly, will be at the convention sporting some brand-new, officially licensed “Godzilla” swag, which TheWrap can exclusively reveal.
Loungefly has a killer five-piece box of pins, with Godzilla, Baby Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, Moguera and King Ghidorah (and their accompanying laser blast or radioactive breath). Plus, Mondo is trotting out a new variant to their instantly iconic James Groman “Godzilla” soft vinyl figure. This version is the “psychedelic” variant, with an insane new color scheme that honestly isn’t that far off from how the King of the Monsters appeared earlier this year in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”

“Transformers One” doesn’t seem primed for a breakout start after earning $9.56 million from 3,978 locations across Friday and preview screenings. That puts the animated prequel, co-produced by Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment, on track for a $26.3 million opening weekend in North America, pacing behind industry projections for a $30 million-plus debut.
Those domestic numbers don’t qualify as a definitive nonstarter for the Paramount release, which was produced at a $75 million budget — a smaller price tag than is typical for a studio animated feature, or a live-action “Transformers” entry for that matter. Moreover, this franchise has proven to be more appealing to international audiences, especially in recent years. But it’s difficult to imagine that there weren’t hopes for a bigger opening to put some more space between “Transformers One” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which, in its third weekend, is still a contender to lead the charts.

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a trio of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Despicable Me 4.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

Adria Arjona - whose star is now on the rise after her impressive turn in Netflix’s Hit Man - is in final talks to star in and executive produce Adam Wingard's latest feature, which we recently learned is titled Onslaught.
The A24 project is described as an action thriller with horror elements, and will see Wingard re-team with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett, who have previously worked together on You’re Next and The Guest. They will also co-write the movie, and cameras are scheduled to roll in New Mexico later this year.
Though specific plot details are still under wraps, the film is said to be "a gonzo action horror thriller," with Arjona set to play "a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped a secret military base.

Adria Arjona is set to star in Onslaught, the next film from You’re Next and Godzilla X Kong director Adam Wingard, said to be a ‘gonzo action thriller’.
Having starred in two well-received thrillers over the past year – that’d be Blink Twice and Hit Man – Adria Arjona’s reportedly set to appear in another one, this time from director Adam Wingard.
Most recently, Wingard’s been best known in multiplexes for his expensive monster flicks – 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong and 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. For his next film, it’s said that the filmmaker’s returning to the smaller-scale thrillers of his earlier career, most notably 2011’s You’re Next and 2014’s The Guest. As reported in May, it’s called Onslaught, and its script, co-written by Wingard and Simon Barrett, is described as a ‘gonzo action thriller’ by The Hollywood Reporter.

The "Transformers" franchise was away for several years following the release of 2018's "Bumblebee," which helped get things back on track, critically speaking, following Michael Bay's later entries in the series. Things have changed, though, and now, fans have much to look forward to. Paramount is once again bringing the robots in disguise back to their animated roots for a new theatrical feature film titled "Transformers One," which serves as a prequel set years and years back in the timeline.
Given that the film takes place so far back in the history of Cybertron, there is much story to tell. The film's producers have already suggested that "Transformers One" is intended to set up a trilogy. So, does that set up begin once the credits roll? Do viewers need to stick around for any credits scenes? That's what we're here to discuss in spoiler-free fashion. Seriously, we will not...

It's only been a couple of weekends but it's already safe to say that Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" is one of the biggest box office hits of the year — at least in North America anyhow. The long-awaited sequel to Burton's 1988 classic has been well over three decades in the making. It's crystal clear that everything came together at the right time as audiences have been flocking to theaters to see the Beetlejuice and the Deetz family reunited after all this time. So much so that the sequel is already one of the ten biggest domestic hits of 2024.
"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took in an estimated $51.6 million domestically on its second weekend, which was more than enough to top the charts. That represents a 53% drop compared to the film's opening weekend, which was a stellar $111 million, making it one of the biggest openings of 2024 thus far. Reviews were good. Word of mouth has been good.

Adria Arjona, who appeared opposite Glen Powell in Netflix’s Hit Man, is in final negotiations to star in and executive produce Onslaught, the latest feature project from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker Adam Wingard.
A24 is behind the action thriller after winning an auction in the spring. It reteams Wingard with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two made the cult hits You’re Next and The Guest.
Wingard and Barrett are writing the project, with Wingard to be in the director’s seat when cameras roll in New Mexico later this year.
Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller. The scope is said to more in line with Wingard’s earlier movies, which were all original creations, before he went off and made the big-budget spectacle hits Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong.

The weekend box office numbers have begun rolling in, and it looks like Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice held up much better than anyone (except us) expected in week two. According to Deadline, the popular sequel grossed $51.6 million this weekend, which is the second-best sophomore weekend for a fall movie since It back in 2017. Notably, the film only dipped 54% this weekend, a strong hold for a movie that opened north of $100 million.
With a $188 million domestic total, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice seems certain to end its domestic run with a $250 million-plus final gross. It is another winner for Warner Bros, who are having a good year. Wonka, Dune: Part Two, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were all major worldwide hits, with only their underrated Furiosa and Horizon: Chapter 1 box office misfires for them this year. They also have Joker: Folie a Deux coming up in a few weeks, which should be another hit,...

While the initial wave of nostalgia has subsided, Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is holding on well in its second weekend with an industry estimated $52 million, just a 53% drop from its $111 million opening.
The Tim Burton sequel is set to have a running domestic total of $188 million by Sunday’s end. Another $8 million would give the film a higher domestic total after inflation adjustment than the first “Beetlejuice” back in 1988. The film is also set to be the third Warner release this year to cross $200 million in domestic grosses, joining “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” But the film is heavily driven by domestic audiences, as North America carried 79% of the film’s total box office heading into the weekend.

2024 got off to a very rough start at the box office, particularly in regards to mainstream horror releases. In 2022 and 2023, horror proved to be one of the most bankable genres that theaters could depend on in the aftermath of the pandemic. Unfortunately, the likes of "Night Swim," "Imaginary," "Abigail," and others disappointed earlier this year. Things have rebounded and we now have hits such as "A Quiet Place: Day One" and the unexpected $100 million hit that was "Longlegs." One movie stands tall above the rest though, and that movie is "Alien: Romulus." Even more crazy to consider? That movie nearly went straight to Hulu.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, director Fede Alvarez's "Romulus" added another $3.9 million to its ever-growing total domestically. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" took the lion's share of the attention with a massive $111 million opening, but the latest "Alien" movie is still holding its own. To that end,...

Columbia Pictures’ Venom: The Last Dance is essentially going day-and-date in China on October 23. The pic hits domestic theaters on Oct. 25.

In Venom: The Last Dance, Hardy returns as Venom, in the final film in the trilogy. Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.

VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With $3.12 billion in total theatrical box office grosses, China has now surpassed North America as the largest movie market in the world:
Hollywood studios first entered the Chinese market in 1994 with “The Fugitive” opening in theaters across Mainland China.
Popular features at the time, including "True Lies," "Titanic," and "Transformers" …
….previously dominated the Chinese box office…
…with Marvel’s "Avengers: Endgame" grossing over $592 million in 2019.
But in 2023, no American movies ranked among the 10 highest grossing in China despite highly anticipated sequels in the "Mission: Impossible," "Fast & Furious" and "Spider-Man" franchises.
As of 2024, only "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has made it into the top ten.
Chinese audiences now prefer to see their own stories on the big screen, with China now the center of the largest movie studios in the world, including “Oriental Movie Metropolis” and “Hengdian World Studios”.

There won’t be any worry of a slow start to the fall box office the way there was at the start of the summer season back in May, and that’s thanks to Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which is on its way to earning one of the strongest opening weekends of the year.
Carrying a $100 million production budget, Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 classic horror comedy looked on paper to have a modestly successful box office run several months ago, supported from its post-Labor Day release spot by nostalgic Gen Xers and elder Millennials and perhaps their teenage children.
Instead, sources at both Warner Bros. and movie theaters tell TheWrap that they are seeing robust interest and advance ticket sales across all regions of the U.S. and across demographics. For the past four years, Chinese audiences haven’t shown much interest in Hollywood movies.
So, the breakout success of Disney and 20th Century’s “Alien: Romulus,” a gory sci-fi thriller that earns its R rating, has been a welcome surprise. The newest chapter in the long-running horror saga has been the rare bright spot among American imports with $82 million and counting in mainland China. It’s expected to reach $114 million (RMB819) by the end of its theatrical run, according to forecast from Chinese ticketing agency Maoyan.
So far, only one other 2024 U.S. title, the Warner Bros. tentpole “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” has managed to make a dent on China’s box office charts with $134 million. And in terms of Hollywood wins, those riches come with an asterisk because the monster mashup was produced by Chinese-owned Legendary Entertainment and distributed by the company’s China local unit Legendary East.

Early concerns at underperformance of big bets dissipated with string of megahits from Inside Out 2 to It Ends with Us
There was a rather nasty chill in the air when the summer season officially kicked off back in early May. After last year’s Barbenheimer mania (the two films made almost $2.4bn combined) proved for the umpteenth time that yes, cinema really was back, the industry hoped and prayed that the historically most profitable few months of the year would once again pay off.
But initial big bets made little money and we were flooded with alarmist headlines insisting that cinema was really not back after all. It turned out that was, unsurprisingly, not the case but was a later boost enough to save the whole season?...

Updated: Another busy weekend at the international box office, with strong holds across the board, and a major new milestone for Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Already the highest grossing animated film of all time, globally and overseas, the sequel has become the first animated movie ever to cross the $1B international box office threshold, now nearing $1.003B. Overall, it is one of only 12 films ever to surpass that milestone. More on that phenom below.
Leading all play overseas was 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Alien: Romulus which added $41.6M overseas in the sophomore session (-35%), and raised its offshore cume to $152.8M. Globally, the total is now $225.4M through Sunday.
Much as it did last frame, China continues to overperform on the Fede Alvarez-directed installment, sticking No. 1 and now at a strong $73.3M. It is the second-biggest Hollywood movie in China this year, behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Actor Dan Stevens has had a busy year, especially in the genre field, appearing in “Abigail,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and soon, on August 29, Neon’s horror thriller “Cuckoo,” starring Hunter Schafer. “Cuckoo” had its world premiere earlier this year at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and was met with great acclaim.

A few months ago, we got the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with director Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!
Godzilla (2014)
Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

S&P Global has lowered its outlook on Warner Bros. Discovery from stable to negative and cut its 2024 and ’25 forecasts for the media giant due to continued challenges in its linear networks segment and weakness in its studios segment.
“Wbd’s first-half 2024 financial and operating performance has missed our expectations largely due to the weak operating environment for linear television that continues to face a challenging advertising environment and ongoing subscriber declines,” the firm wrote in a Friday statement. “Additionally, Wbd’s studio has experienced significant volatility over the past several quarters due to the lingering effects of the writers’/actors’ strike that concluded in late 2023 and the volatility at its gaming studio due to the lack of repeated success in 2024 compared to 2023 when the ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ game was a major hit.”

Platz vier gehört aktuell „Dune: Part Two“ mit 710 Mio. Dollar Kasse, gefolgt von „Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“, der 570 Mio. Dollar umsetzen konnte.

The time has come to acknowledge Dan Stevens for the scream king that he is. This year alone, his genre credits include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Abigail, and director Tilman Singer’s new film Cuckoo, where he plays a mysterious and undeniably villainous resort owner named Herr König. In the same way that scream queens have helped shape and define the fabric of horror and its feminine roles, recurring scream kings like Stevens have similarly influenced the spectrum of masculinity represented in the genre.
After shocking Downton Abbey fans when he turned in his resignation nearly 12 years ago, it was unclear what Stevens’ career future would look like. Thankfully for us horror fans, his desire for diverse creative experiences quickly drew him towards genre fare. With his disarming good looks and willingness to get weird, wild, and downright drenched in blood, Stevens brings a palpable enthusiasm to every project he touches.

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

Warner Bros. Discovery is taking a hefty non-cash impairment charge, or write-down, of $9.1 billion at its networks division to align the book value of its linear television business with the reality of uncertain advertising and sports rights renewals as the NBA is set to move on.
The value of the linear assets when Discovery and Warner Media merged two and half year ago was significantly higher that it is now as consumers migrated and advertising dipped. That’s across the industry. A difference with David Zaslav-led Wbd versus other big media companies is that it just lost a lucrative basketball package to Amazon. Wbd had matching rights and is suing the NBA to get the games back, but no one seems to think it can prevail. Zaslav had indicated early in the renewal process that the company didn’t absolutely need the NBA, but the lawsuit calls the loss a massive blow,...

Warner Bros. Discovery has at long last crossed 100 million direct-to-consumer subscribers — but that will not be what the second quarter of 2024 is remembered for. No, the history books will mark spring 2024 as the time Wbd realized its TV networks were worth $9 billion less than it originally thought.
President and CEO David Zaslav doesn’t want to talk about it. His prepared remarks accompanying the company’s Q2 2024 financials:
“At Warner Bros. Discovery, our top priority is our global direct-to-consumer business and we are extremely pleased with the growing momentum we are seeing, as demonstrated by another strong quarter of growth with 3.6 million net adds, fueled by our ongoing international expansion and investment in high quality, diverse content. The week that includes the July 4 holiday is usually a big one for streaming services — but it’s never been as big as this year.
Nielsen’s streaming content ratings show the week of July 1-7 as the biggest one ever since the measurement firm began regularly tracking streaming several years ago. TV users spent 313 billion minutes on streaming platforms for the week, and for the first time, every entrant in the top 10 overall titles had at least 1 billion minutes of viewing.
The previous biggest week came just seven days earlier, when seven of the overall top 10 crossed the billion-minute mark. Nielsen also says July 7 was the fourth-largest streaming day it has ever tracked, behind Jan. 13 — when Peacock had an exclusive NFL playoff game — and Feb. 17-18, which was both the Presidents Day holiday and had a cold snap keeping much of the country indoors.

Tilman Singer premiered his hypnotic debut feature Luz at the 2017 Fantasia Film Festival to critical acclaim and he returns this year after a buzz-building festival run with his ultra-weird, super-spooky sophomore horror Cuckoo. Starring Dan Stevens (Abigail), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and one hell of a scary villain, Cuckoo is a mind-scrambling experience of pure terror, and truly one of the strangest movies you’re bound to see this year.

One of the biggest cinematic surprises of the last year was, without a doubt, "Godzilla Minus One." It may have been difficult for longtime fans to imagine an entry from this franchise hitting such a high bar nearly 70 years into its existence, but director Takashi Yamazaki's film delivered the goods -- so much so that it became the first and only "Godzilla" movie to earn an Oscar. Those who have watched it are certainly aware that "Minus One" is great, but even for those who have already seen it and are well aware of what the film has to offer, there is a strong argument to be made for watching the movie again in an entirely new way.
Amid the film's record-breaking theatrical run, its distributor, Toho, released the "Minus Color" edition, which, as the title implies, is Yamazaki's World War II-era take on the King of the Monsters in black-and-white.

After just three days of release, Disney’s Marvel epic “Deadpool & Wolverine” is already one of the highest-grossing releases of the year.
The superhero sequel, which unites Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their comic book personas, has generated $233 million at the international box office and $438 million globally. “Deadpool & Wolverine” stands behind only “Inside Out 2” ($1.5 billion), “Dune: Part Two” ($711 million), “Despicable Me 4” ($596 million), “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($567.6 million) and “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($545 million) in terms of worldwide ticket sales in 2024.
The film will easily rise on global charts in the coming weeks, but box office analysts are assessing if the third “Deadpool” has the momentum to clear the $1 billion mark. Even this early in its box office run, it seems safe to predict it’ll hit that benchmark. However, only one R-rated movie in history — 2019’s “Joker” with $1.07 billion globally — has joined the coveted billion-dollar club.

For Imax CEO Richard Gelfond, the impact of last year’s Hollywood strikes and a lingering pandemic is in the rearview mirror.
“With the strikes — and the lingering effects of the pandemic — firmly behind us, we are in an excellent position to fully realize the benefits of our strong, asset-lite business model,” Gelfond told analysts during a morning conference call after his company released its second-quarter financial results with a revenue and sales dip.
That optimism will be a balm to top execs at major exhibitors, who are Imax’s main customers for its theater systems and have faced a crisis of confidence after theater shutdowns during the height of the pandemic and after last year’s Los Angeles writers and actors strikes disrupted their movie pipeline.
“We believe we have reached a pivot point in the post-strike rebound, given surging demand for the Imax experience among filmmakers, studios and audiences worldwide.

Glen Powell has yet another stellar hit, perhaps the biggest to showcase his star power, in the disaster film Twisters. A sequel in spirits to Bill Paxton’s 1996 film Twister, the film stars Powell as Tyler Owens opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Kate Carter. While the sequel film is all set to become a bigger hit than the original, the film had to make sure that it just wasn’t a visual spectacle.

Based on a novel by Dan Simmons (that you can buy Here), the first season of the AMC series The Terror was about a doomed journey to the Arctic in the 1840s. Ordering a second season, AMC turned the show into an anthology, and season 2 told the story of a specter haunting prisoners in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Now, after a five year break, the show is making a comeback with a new season called The Terror: Devil in Silver – and The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the cast includes Judith Light (Shining Vale), Cch Pounder (The Shield), Chinaza Uche (Dickinson), Hampton Fluker (Shades of Blue), b (You), Aasif Mandvi (Evil), John Benjamin Hickey (The Big C), Stephen Root (Barry), Hayward Leach (Tom Swift), Michael Aronov (The Americans), Marin Ireland (Justified: City Primeval), and Phillip Ettinger (First Reformed).

Neon's latest wild horror movie, "Cuckoo," has just dropped a new trailer featuring more glimpses at Dan Stevens and Hunter Schafer's already-acclaimed performances. The enigmatic yet apparently entertaining film debuted at the Berlin International Film Fest this year, and /Film's B.J. Colangelo dubbed it a "screeching ride of repulsive sci-fi body horror" in her positive festival review back in April. Since then, strong opinions surrounding the movie have multiplied, with /Film's Bill Bria describing "Cuckoo" as "profoundly strange, nightmarish, and moving in equal measure" on Twitter. Currently, the film holds an 81% approval rating from critics cited on Rotten Tomatoes.
Written and directed by "Luz" filmmaker Tilman Singer, "Cuckoo" tells the story of a teen whose move to the Bavarian Alps is met with a series of sinister events. The movie marks the first horror role for "Euphoria" breakout star Schafer (though Yorgos Lanthimos' "Kinds of Kindness" certainly toes...

The start of the summer blockbuster season was a real ape-fest. Within a matter of weeks, there was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the long-awaited Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, and Dev Patel’s Monkey Man. And the ape-iest of the lot was Kingdom, fast-forwarding 300 years on from the end of the Caesar trilogy to spin a whole new apes-together-strong saga, sending young Noa (Owen Teague) out of his sheltered home and into a world of overgrown ruins, hardscrabble humans, and simian despots. The film was a solid hit in cinemas amid a tricky time for ticket sales, earning just shy of $400 million worldwide, and now we know exactly when it’ll be available to all on Disney+.
It’s been confirmed that Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes will hit Disney+ on 2 August – ready to bring the story of Noa, the smirking Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand...

When you think of the Hilton family today, you probably think of influencers such as Paris Hilton and Nicky (Hilton) Rothschild. You might even think of the extensive hospitality businesses somewhat owned by the family, Hilton Hotels Corporation, founded and created by Conrad Hilton in 1919. The Hilton family history is extensive, so today we will be talking about Conrad Hilton and his son, William Barron Hilton’s history. Conrad Hilton is one of seven and was born in New Mexico in 1887 to parents Augustus Halvorsen Hilton and Mary Genevieve Laufersweiler. Conrad Hilton would ultimately begin what we know now as the Hilton Hotel Corporation.

Updated Monday Am: Universal/Warner Bros/Amblin’s Twisters is higher this morning after a $21.57M Sunday, which puts the Lee Isaac Chung-directed, Mark L. Smith-penned tentpole at an opening of $81.2M. That’s close to double what the first movie opened to back in 1996, at $41M.
The question now is whether the movie can be sequelized. What’s gonna happen? More tornadoes? One has to take the setting to some fresh locale where there aren’t tornadoes, i.e. New York City.
Universal does it again: Twisters opening is just $1.1M shy of what Oppenheimer opened to a year ago. Counting the third weekend of Despicable Me 4, Universal made $105.55M between the top two films at the box office.
Updated Sunday Am: Universal has called the domestic opening for the Lee Isaac Chung-directed Twisters at $80.5M, as we told you last night. That’s 60% ahead of...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters is whipping up huge winds at the box office, with forecasters predicting a far better than expected domestic opening of $80.5 million in North America. That’s even up from Saturday’s already massive estimate of $74.6 million.
The record-breaking movie, playing in 4,151 theaters, easily boasts the top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film, not adjusted for inflation. (The current crown holder is Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow, which bowed to $68.44 million in 2004.) It’s also the third biggest start of the year to date behind Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) after edging out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million).
The turnout for Twisters cements the rising star status of Hollywood’s man-of-the-moment Glen Powell, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos (the trio lead the ensemble cast). It’s also a notable win for Chung, the acclaimed filmmaker of indie hit Minari.

“Twisters” is twirling, twirling, twirling toward one of the five biggest domestic debuts of the year. The sequel whizzed past projections on opening day with $32.2 million from 4,151 locations across Friday and preview screenings.
Outlook for the opening weekend of the natural disaster thriller is now at $74 million — way north of the industry estimates for $50 million to $55 million earlier this week. That puts it in competition with fellow Universal release “Despicable Me 4” ($75 million) for the fourth-biggest three-day debut of the year (though that animated sequel opened on a Wednesday and had grosses dispersed across a five-day holiday weekend frame). The top three North American opening weekends of the year are “Inside Out 2” ($154 million), “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
That’s great company to be in for “Twisters,” which Amblin produced and Warner Bros. is distributing internationally. The original “Twister,” starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt,...

Dan Stevens is ready to draw summoning circles in a psychiatric hospital for The Terror: Devil in Silver, the third chapter of AMC Networks‘ The Terror horror anthology. Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and author Victor Lavalle co-wrote The Terror: Devil in Silver, based on Lavalle’s novel. The story finds Stevens dabbling with forces beyond his control as pieces of his sanity break away.
Here’s a synopsis for Devil in Silver courtesy of Amazon:
New Hyde Hospital’s psychiatric ward has a new resident. It also has a very, very old one.
Pepper is a rambunctious big man, minor-league troublemaker, working-class hero (in his own mind), and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He’s not mentally ill, but that doesn’t seem to matter. He is accused of a crime he can’t quite square with his memory. In...
