Exclusive: The New York City Retirement Systems are in Disney’s corner amid bitter proxy fight with activist investor Nelson Peltz.
Disney’s “shares have performed well. Disney’s management and board are focused on a strategic transformation, and as shareholders we believe that they should be given the time to execute on this,” NYC Comptroller Brad Lander said in a statement to Deadline.
“What remains clear is that boards are most effective when members bring valuable perspectives and relevant experience and are focused on the long-term health of the company. Nelson Peltz’s troubling performance on other company boards raise concerns about the value he would bring to the table, and we do not believe this would be beneficial to preserving shareholder value,” he said. “The New York City Retirement Systems intend to vote in favor of the candidates nominated by management.”

“Star Wars” fans have received a lot of news coming out of Star Wars Celebration Europe, being held this weekend in London.
On Friday, Daisy Ridley made a surprise appearance, revealing she’d be reprising the role of Rey in an upcoming movie set in the wake of “The Last Jedi”.
Speaking with Variety, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained how Ridley wound up onstage in London.
“It was a pretty straightforward phone call,” Kennedy said. “I started out by just saying, ‘Hey, I think we’re getting near being ready.’ We’ve been talking a lot about what we’re doing in the movie space and I said, ‘I think we’re getting close to being ready. How would you like to go to Celebration?’ That was really the beginning of it. She was out of her mind excited.”

For the aspiring costume designer who dreams of creating looks for film, television, theater and concert stages, the journey typically starts with the right school, where a host of considerations awaits. Classroom size, location, specialized classes, participation in theater programs, job placement, networking with alums and, most important, tuition are all part of the equation. As schools meet the demands and technology of an ever-changing entertainment landscape, nothing tops a good education.
To create its annual top 10 list of costume design schools, The Hollywood Reporter consulted with costume designers and academics, looking at the critical factors — including class size, reputation and alumni success — that help make each school unique.

Perhaps co-founder Walt Disney summed it up best, having noted, “CalArts is the principal thinking I hope to leave when I move on to greener pastures.

There's no denying the power of James Cameron. Even 13 years after the first film, "Avatar: The Way of Water" is a massive success, becoming not only the biggest movie of 2022, but the biggest movie since "Avengers: Endgame." It's not hard to see why: This is a giant spectacle of a blockbuster movie, a family epic that smartly handles the "Avatar" story for the next generation, virtually improves on every aspect of its predecessor, and gives us the most expensive save the whales ad ever made.
Just like the first movie, "The Way of Water" is a monumental achievement in visual effects. New tools were created for the film, from water simulators to advances in performance capture, building on what was there from the first "Avatar" but making them bigger and better.
Now that the movie is out, we're finally getting more in-depth looks behind the scenes of the film, especially its Oscar-nominated visual effects.

Why go to film festival if not to discover some of the best up-and-coming filmmakers? The 2023 Sundance Film Festival has just wrapped and after screening over 100 new films. Was it a success? Absolutely. The festival returned to an in-person event in the snowy city of Park City, Utah after two years of virtual festivals during the pandemic. Sundance is famous for being the place where directors like Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez made their mark, breaking into the industry with their first indie films. In recent years they've also been responsible for launching Damien Chazelle (Whiplash in 2014), Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station in 2013), Dee Rees (Mudbound in 2017), Ari Aster (Hereditary in 2018), Lulu Wang (The Farewell in 2019), and Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You in 2018). At Sundance 2023, the festival decided to feature a selection of mostly unknown, first-time filmmakers and it paid off. This is one of their best line-ups in years,...
