The Yankee Atomic Electric Company was formed in the middle of the 1950s. Various New England power companies combined to build the third atomic power plant in the United States in Rowe, Massachusetts. This film covers the building of that plant through its going operational in November of 1961, and speculates on the sort of industries it would support in addition to its primary goal of operating a 180 megawatt plant.
Much is made of its experimental nature, of the new technology, of the care and labor that went into the plant's construction. Although the United States has largely turned away from nuclear power, back then it was viewed as a potential source of much new peaceful energy.
The plant was closed in 1991.
