Looney Tunes fans probably thought that the arrival of The Day the Earth Blew Up in cinemas might be a turning point for the legendary animated franchise, but it seems that Warner Bros. Discovery has instead decided to make it harder than ever for fans to be able to watch the antics of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and other colorful characters. Not content with locking the Coyote vs Acme movie away in a safe, inside a box, wrapped in chains and behind a roomful of lazers, a host of Looney Tunes programs, along with several Scooby Doo movies and two Tom & Jerry movies, have now been quietly dropped from Max.
According to Deadline, the decision has been made to cut back "children's" content on Max to focus on family and adult content going forward. This is not the first time that Wbd has decided to push aside...

Saturday morning cartoons are a staple of television that has been lost as streaming sites become more and more popular. However, the tradition of airing cartoons on Saturday and Sunday mornings lasted from the '60s to most of the '90s. Even though most children don't watch open television anymore, this tradition still continues on some networks, and sites like YouTube often offer dedicated channels solely for beloved cartoons of yesteryear.
Since a lot of people grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, it makes sense that some of the most beloved animated series come from this programming. From oldies like Tom & Jerry to epic superhero shows like X-Men: The Animated Series, these cartoons will forever live in fans' hearts. They make great nostalgic viewing, and while adult eyes may look at them differently than younger ones did, they still hold plenty of joys to be revisited.

Aamir Khan, who is turning 60 today has given some of the best films and performances to audiences around the world. To celebrate the brilliance of the multi-hyphenate actor, Subhash K Jha presents his list of 11 of his greatest films.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988):
The (lover)Boy Next Door image, which was created specifically for this film, became the reference point for Aamir’s image in the future. He is the dependable guy next door who’ll come to your rescue if your wash basin gets leaky or your child goes missing.
Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992):
Gave a mainstream sanctity to sports films in Bollywood. Prior to Jjws, sports films didn’t work. Aamir gave same legitimacy to wrestling in Dangal.
Andaz Apna Apna (1994):
The situational Tom & Jerry comedy came out of the closet with this one. Aamir had a ball both on and off the sets.

Rashida Jones To Direct ‘Playdate’ From Marie Østerbye’s Black List Script; Gloria Sanchez Producing

Rashida Jones (Sunny) is teaming with Gloria Sanchez on Playdate, the feature adaptation of Marie Østerbye’s original script, which landed at #2 on last year’s Black List. Jones will direct, with Jessica Elbaum and Will Ferrell producing for Gloria Sanchez.

The Simpsons is one of the greatest animated sitcoms of all time. It has so many different and hilarious repeating bits that there's bound to be something for any potential viewer to cherish. For many, one of them is an ultra-violent cartoon called The Itchy and Scratchy Show. Itchy is a psychopathic mouse who uses various methods of killing the cat, Scratchy, making for entertainment that kids in Springfield (including Bart and Lisa) regularly tune into. Krusty routinely plays the cartoon for the kids during his show, but this animated slash-fest also tends to air independently. Owned by Roger Meyers Jr., the franchise is often referred to as a parody of the classic cartoon Tom & Jerry, but it's also related to Tom and Jerry's less famous contemporaries, like Herman and Catnip.

It may feel like a decade ago, but it’s now been exactly one month since Martin Short hosted Saturday Night Live’s 2024 Christmas show. And while most of the sketches that aired that night have largely been forgotten, Colin Jost and Michael Che’s notorious Weekend Update joke swap continues to generate a surprising amount of cultural discourse.
That’s because the most recent installment of the increasingly masochistic tradition was particularly brutal. Seth Meyers once claimed that both Jost and Che were “haunted by the experience,” as if it was a joint trauma. Adding to the excruciating awkwardness of the whole thing, Jost’s superstar wife, Scarlett Johansson, was at the show, having previously cameoed in the celebrity-filled Five-Timers Club sketch.
And Johansson’s live reaction to the joke-swap segment was captured on camera for everyone to see. After one particularly tasteless line involving her genitalia and...

Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a sequel to Barbie, Greta Gerwig's live-action blockbuster hit starring Margot Robbie as the primary Barbie protagonist. Despite Gerwig's initial resistance to returning for a hypothetical Barbie 2, it seemed inevitable that Warner Bros. would pursue a franchise – especially after the first film grossed a record-breaking $1.4 billion worldwide. If there must be a Barbie sequel (there mustn't), at least Gerwig is involved.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach have "hatched an idea" for a sequel that's said to be in the early stages at Warner Bros. It's unclear if Gerwig would return to direct in addition to script-writing duties. When reached for a comment, a rep for Gerwig and Baumbach said, "There is no legitimacy to this reporting." A rep for Warner Bros. called THR's report "inaccurate."

Tom & Jerry are returning in a big way, as two of the writers behind the Toy Story franchise and Rashida Jones are set to develop a theatrical feature film. Created by Hanna-Barbera in 1941, the slapstick duo has starred in over 166 animated shorts and several additional spin-offs. Two theatrical Tom & Jerry movies have been developed, including an animated feature in 1992 titled Tom and Jerry: The Movie, and a live-action/animation hybrid movie released in 2021.
As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has begun development on a new Tom & Jerry movie. Though no director has been announced, it has been confirmed that Jones will write alongside Will McCormack and Michael Govier. McCormack and Govier's credits include Toy Story 4.

In 2021, Warner Bros. released two hybrid animated releases, which involved some of the most beloved figures in pop culture. Unfortunately, both failed to wow fans upon its release. But while both Space Jam 2 and Chloë Grace Moretz’s Tom & Jerry were critically panned disasters, the latter rubbed most the wrong way, as unlike Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry has rarely worked on the big screen.

However, this isn’t stopping Warner Bros. from dipping their toes into the beloved IP once again, and hopefully, this time they would reject one aspect of the 2021 release, which proved to be a turn-off for many from the get-go.

Since the characters’ inception, Tom & Jerry have mostly relied on slapstick comedy and over-the-top action with little to no narrative.

Some of the most beloved animated characters in the history of television are coming back for a new adventure. Deadline reports that a new Tom & Jerry feature is in the works at Warner Bros. and Rashida Jones, Will McCormack and Michael Govier have been hired to write the project. The movie will be produced through Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and it will be different from the recent hybrid adventure that delighted audiences — but missed the mark with critics — on the big screen a few years ago. Details connected to the plot of Tom & Jerry's return are currently kept under wraps by the studio.

Deadline reports that Warner Bros Pictures Animation is developing a brand-new Tom and Jerry movie, which will be written by Rashida Jones, Will McCormack, and Micahel Govier.
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera created the mischievous cat and mouse at MGM in 1940. Over the next two decades, they produced 114 shorts that won 7 Oscars. Others have revived the duo over the years with more shorts and a variety of TV shows. The characters most recently starred in the 2021 live-action/animated hybrid film Tom & Jerry, which received largely negative reviews and grossed $136 million worldwide.

Exclusive: Rashida Jones, Will McCormack and Michael Govier have been set to write Tom and Jerry, a feature that will be made under Bill Damaschke’s Warner Bros Pictures Animation.
They will be starting fresh on the new iteration of the misadventures of the cat Tom and mouse Jerry, hatched in 1940 by William Hanna & Joseph Barbera at MGM. Until MGM shuttered its animation division, they made 114 shorts that won 7 Oscars. Later versions came from Gene Deitch and Chuck Jones, and then others. Ever since Luffy first unlocked Gear 5 in One Piece, theres been an ongoing debate about how, exactly, its supposed to work. Every fight with Gear 5 has Luffy doing bizarre things like making objects spawn from nothing or having his eyes pop out of his head, and with every new fight, its become increasingly less believable that its all just One Pieces typical brand of comedy.
Gear 5 has been one of the weirdest powers in One Piece from the moment it first appeared, and the exact nature of its abilities might have finally been defined. Chloë Grace Moretz already had a lot of acting credits to her name before starring in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass, but that role put her on the map...and generated a lot of controversy.
Given her young age at the time, the fact she was dropping F-bombs (and the odd C-word) shocked many, as did the sheer level of violence some of the 11-year-old's scenes included. Since then, Moretz has gone on to star in the likes of Let Me In, Hugo, Carrie, Tom & Jerry, and Kick-Ass 2, of course.
Now, the actor is making headlines after coming out as a "gay woman" on Instagram. Moretz revealed her sexual orientation in a post regarding her decision in the 2024 United States Presidential Election.
Moretz has been romantically linked to model Kate Harrison since 2018 but has never publicly commented on her sexuality. This cause was clearly one important enough to the actor to change that.

Last week, Audible launched the ten-part true crime podcast My Mom’s Murder, in which host Lauren Malloy “tells the story of how she believed her mother died of a heart condition but it turned out she was murdered.” Deadline reports that Malloy’s story is also being turned into a TV series that has Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick Ass) on board to star.
Produced by Ayr Media, the podcast version of My Mom’s Murder tells how Malloy uncovered the shocking truth about her mother Lori’s death in 1993. When Malloy was just an infant, her mother passed away and had grown up believing her passing was natural. When she discovers that her mother’s death was actually an unsolved murder, she sets out on a journey to discover the truth. The podcast follows Malloy as she confronts family members, interviews old friends, and unearths hidden evidence about her mother’s life and death.

Warning: Spoilers for Multiversus: Collision Detected #2!Like many long-time Looney Tunes fans, I was honestly shocked to see Bugs Bunny dropping a not-so-family-friendly joke in the preview for the latest issue of Multiversus: Collision Detected, by making a Basic Instinct reference, of all things, but to be honest, I wholeheartedly endorse it. Preview pages for Multiversus: Collision Detected #2 written by Bryan Q. Miller, with art by Jon Sommariva contain a reference that will shock some readers with how not-pg it is, while others might just be surprised that Bugs is doing a callback to a movie that came out in 1992.
For me, it raised the question of how much Loony Tunes has ever been PG; as I see it, half the appeal of Looney Tunes is subtle adult humor like this.

Fans of Tom and Jerry are in for a treat during the month of September. Max has officially announced that four Tom and Jerry projects, including The Tom & Jerry Show, Tom and Jerry: Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse, Tom & Jerry Tales, and Tom & Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, will officially begin streaming on Max on September 14. Most episodes of Tom & Jerry consist of the mouse, Jerry, getting up to his hilarious hijinx while the cat, Tom, is left to deal with the fallout, which usually results in Tom chasing Jerry around to no avail. The Tom and Jerry Show, which ran from 2011 to 2022, has more than 230 episodes and 40 writers that worked on the show during its 11-year run.

Animation will allow Evil Dead to push the limits of gore and horror in ways live-action never could. The franchise has always had a cartoonish influence, now it's literally becoming a cartoon with a new animated series. Bruce Campbell will reprise his role as Ash Williams in the new show, bringing his delightfully over-the-top performance to the animated world.
Bruce Campbell has confirmed that an Evil Dead animated series is in the works, and it has the chance to finally do something that the live-action movies never could. Ever since Evil Dead Rise revitalized the franchise in 2023, the series has had more projects in development than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In February 2024, an Evil Dead movie was announced to be directed by Sbastien Vaniek. In April 2024, a separate Evil Dead movie was announced to be directed by Francis Galluppi.

Warner Bros. Discovery has been dishing out cuts and cancelations in all areas of its output over the last few years, and it seems that the cull is still ongoing. According to an email sent to subscribers, the Boomerang streaming service will be shut down at the end of September, with some content being migrated to Max and the rest seemingly disappearing into the streaming void.
Boomerang began life in 2000 as a cable network channel, which ran some of Warner Bros. most iconic animated shows, such as various iterations of Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry shorts, and an abundance of Looney Tunes shows, shorts and movies. In 2017, the channel became its own streaming platform, and as well as continuing to host classic cartoons of the past, it also started producing new and exclusive content to keep subscribers happy. Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down the Boomerang streaming service and moving some of its programming, which includes many classic cartoon series, onto Max.
The kids-and-family move is set for September 30, according to an email to subscribers.
It comes in the same year as a similar strategic shift by Paramount Global, which shuttered Noggin and moved its content onto flagship Paramount+.
Boomerang, which began as a cable network in 2000 featuring a range of animated classics like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry and Loony Tunes, became a streaming service in 2017. In more recent years, it expanded into original programming.

Unlike a real boomerang, the cartoon-based streaming service is highly unlikely to return.
The end of the line has come for another kid’s streaming service. Boomerang, which specializes in classic cartoons from the libraries of Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera such as “Looney Tunes,” “Tom & Jerry,” “Scooby-Doo,” and many others has announced that it will shut down later this year. It’s another move toward streaming consolidation, as its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery is shifting all of its content to its flagship streamer Max.
Key Details: Boomerang will shut down as of Sept. 30. Remaining subscribers will get a partial refund for any service they’ve paid for after that date. Max has a wide lineup of other kids’ content, including reality shows, movies, and more. Sign Up $9.99+ / month Max.com
In an email sent to Boomerang subscribers on Thursday, Wbd said it would be closing down the streamer on Sept.

Bear with me. George Lucas once said audiences never understood the “Star Wars” prequels because his Lucasfilm classics were always meant for kids, not adults. But the truth of the matter is that good storytelling, like the original “Star Wars” movies or classic Pixar movies, works for and engages the hearts and minds of all audiences and not just children. The one exception to the rule might be the sometimes impossibly silly and zany “Despicable Me” franchise which is arguably generally geared at children only with its Minion mania chaos of fart jokes, pratfalls, burps, things that explode in your face, and pandemonium that’s more akin to classic “Tom & Jerry” or “Looney Toons” cartoons without the cleverness or elegance.

The doctor-turned-comedian has starred in films from The Hangover to Crazy Rich Asians, been a judge on The Masked Singer and still assists with the odd medical emergency. What would you like to ask him?
It seems every country needs a medical doctor-turned-comedian. The UK has Harry Hill, Monty Python’s Graham Chapman and the Goodies’ Graeme Garden. The US has Ken Jeong MD, who practiced as a physician of internal medicine in Los Angeles while trying to get his stand-up and improv career off the ground. (He maintains his medical licence and has assisted with medical emergencies since. He’s got some good stories on this!)
Jeong got his big break in Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, and then went to on play a flamboyant gangster in The Hangover and two sequels. He’s since starred opposite Paul Rudd in Role Models, Brendan Fraser in Furry Vengeance and was in Crazy Rich Asians.

Exclusive: New Line Cinema is in early development on Isn’t It Scary, a follow-up to its rom-com Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, multiple sources tell Deadline.
April Prosser (Look Both Ways) has been tapped to pen the script. We’re told Todd Garner will produce for Broken Road Productions, alongside frequent collaborators Gina Mathews and Grant Scharbo of Little Engine Entertainment, though these deals haven’t yet closed, as it’s early days here. Playfully subverting and satirizing the conventions of the rom-com genre, Isn’t It Romantic grossed over $48 million worldwide upon its release via Warner Bros in 2019. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film centers on Natalie (Wilson), an Australian architect living in New York City who is cynical about love and romance. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated introduced a continuous storyline and actual supernatural entities threatening the Mystery Inc. crew, a departure from its classic formula. Mystery Incorporated reveals Scooby-Doo as an Anunnaki, tying him to a cosmic horror lineage of interdimensional beings. Mystery Incorporated goes against the original cartoon's legacy by rejecting its main message: humans are always the real monsters.
Scooby-Doo is one of the most beloved talking dogs of pop culture, but few people know that one canonical origin story suggests Scooby-Doo is in fact an alien. Ever since its creation in 1969, the original cartoon series has been adapted to all sorts of mediums, including video games, movies, and books. Scooby-Doo is reportedly being adapted into a Netflix live-action series, hinting at a new background to the iconic Mystery Inc. crew. Back in November, Mark Hamill told fans at Fan Expo San Francisco that he would no longer be portraying the Clown Prince of Gotham.
Despite being considered by many to be the best Joker of all time, Hamill believed he just couldn't play the role unless it was opposite Kevin Conroy's Batman. Conroy, who voiced Bruce Wayne/Batman across several projects, passed away in November 2022.
But it seems there was a little caveat that allowed for Hamill to reprise the iconic villain role one final time in an upcoming game called MultiVersus. As it turns out, prior to his passing, Kevin Conroy also voiced Batman in the fighting game. It's perhaps for this reason that Hamill made an exception to his previous statement and returned to the role of Joker in the game.
For those unfamiliar, MultiVersus is a free-to-play platform fighter, in the same vein as Nintendo's Super Smash Bros.

After accidentally revealing the news to a handful of trade publications on earlier this week, Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) formally announced the forthcoming launch of their classic cartoon television network MeTV Toons on Thursday.
The channel will debut in June on broadcast stations across the country and on free, ad-supported streaming television platforms, and will include dozens of classic animated series like “Tom & Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” “Johnny Quest” and “Scooby-Doo.”
MeTV Toons builds off a Saturday morning cartoon block that has aired on Weigel-owned MeTV for several years now, which consisted primarily of animated shows from Warner Bros. MeTV Toons will expand on this idea by incorporating other Warner Bros series into the mix, along with shows from Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony’s Columbia Pictures and others.

Itchy and Scratchy are responsible for some of the most memorable episodes of "The Simpsons." Every fan will fondly remember "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" or Marge's crusade against the ultra-violent kids' cartoon in "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge." Indeed, "The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show" landed at number five on /Film's ranking of the best episodes of "The Simpsons," with "Itchy and Scratchy Land" coming in at number 15.
Clearly, then, "Itchy and Scratchy" was more than a parody of "Tom & Jerry"-style cartoons. Though the central joke was as simple as "What if Tom & Jerry was super violent," the show-within-a-show was often used as a way to extend the cultural satire that was so integral to "The Simpsons." Exclusive: Netflix’s new feature Boss Dan Lin has tapped former DreamWorks Animation and Coyote Vs. Acme producer Chris deFaria to consult for the streamer’s animation department, we hear on very good authority.
Lin and deFaria worked together on the mega success of The Lego Movie when the duo were at Warners. Essentially, what is being sorted at Netflix is how to eventize their animation movies more. The streamer, together with Annapurna, saved the Blue Sky axed Disney LGBTQ+ movie Nimona, a casualty of the Disney-Fox merger; the pic wound up getting an Oscar nomination for Animated Feature.
Animation reports into Lin. Karen Toliver serves as VP of Animated Film.
At Warners deFaria worked as the president of Animation and Innovative Technology. He held that position for four years between 2013 and 2017, which included co-oversight of the studio’s Warner Animation Group. While at Warners, deFaria’s credits included Man of Steel,...

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the accident on the set of the Amazon MGM Studios film The Pickup.
A U.S. Department of Labor spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter early Wednesday that an inquiry had been initiated into the incident. “As the investigation is open, we are unable to provide preliminary or interim information at this time,” the spokesperson added.
The accident in question occurred on a second unit set of the Atlanta-based film on Saturday and injured multiple crewmembers, an Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday. Crewmembers were shooting an action sequence that had previously been rehearsed and “did not go as planned,” the spokesperson stated. “We are still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering.”
