Acorn TV has announced the titles that will be available on the AMC-owned streaming service in October 2024. The Acorn TV October 2024 slate adds to the service’s various acclaimed English and foreign-language dramas, engaging comedies, documentaries, and more.

Lupin and Hijack creator George Kay is launching an All3 Media-backed indie.

Observatory Pictures has been set up in partnership with New Pictures, the All3Media-owned drama producer behind shows including Kay’s ITV drama The Long Shadow.

Under terms of the pact, all of Observatory’s projects will be co-produced with New Pictures, with All3Media International holding international distribution rights.

Kay will work closely with New Pictures’ CEO Willow Grylls and executive producer Matt Sandford. He will look to create and shown “ambitious, commercially-successful high-end drama series” for streamers and networks in the UK and internationally.

We understand Kay’s previous indie, Idiotlamp Productions, which he ran with director Jim Field-Smith, will remain operational, but only for existing IP such as Hijack. All new Kay creations will go through Observatory.

All3Media, which owns New Pictures, will distribute it globally.

RedBird Imi, the media and entertainment investment company headed by ex-CNN chief Jeff Zucker, announced the completion of its $1.45 billion takeover of All3Media, the U.K.’s largest independent TV production company.

With the deal closed, Zucker, CEO of RedBird Imi, has become the chairman of the All3Media board. All3Media CEO Jane Turton and COO Sara Geater will continue to lead the media company for RedBird Imi.

The All3Media acquisition, announced in February, is RedBird Imi’s largest completed transaction to date and its fifth since the investment company was formed in late 2022. Exclusive: A third season of Acorn TV and Channel 5 detective drama Dalgliesh has begun filming in Northern Ireland.

Produced by New Pictures (The Long Shadow) for Acorn and C5 in association with All3Media International, the third run will include lead actor Bertie Carvel making his directorial debut.

Another three P.D. James novels will be adapted for the season over two hour-long episodes each, in which Commander Dalgliesh is seen with Margaret Thatcher on the cusp of power in the UK. In the first book, Death in Holy Orders, Dalgliesh travels to a remote seminary overlooking a windswept lake, where a body has been found gruesomely murdered. Exclusive: This Sunday’s BAFTA TV Awards will “celebrate and remember the power of storytelling” at a “challenging” time for the industry, according to the new chair of the 77-year-old body.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline in the days leading up to the London ceremony, Sara Putt, who replaced Krishnendu Majumdar last year, said the awards will partly act as a tonic against the bad times, allowing “a community to come together, network, and be creative and supportive of each other.”

She acknowledged that 2023 was a “challenging year for many in the industry, whether freelancers or small indies,” coming a few months after BAFTA research found one third are considering leaving.

“We [at BAFTA] have many roles to play and it is important when times are hard to celebrate and remember the power of storytelling,” Putt said.

Exclusive: The Forsyte Saga, John Galsworthy’s sweeping portrait of a wealthy British family in 1880s London, is getting its third TV adaptation in less than 60 years.

PBS Masterpiece has set a six-part season based on the 1920s novels, with BAFTA-nominated Poldark writer Debbie Horsfield penning the adaptation, designed to become a returning series.

It follows the BBC’s 1967 adaptation, which was watched by audiences of up to 18M. The 2002 version aired on ITV and featured a cast including Damian Lewis and Gina McKee.

The latest reimagining is housed at Mammoth Screen, the ITV Studios-backed British production company behind Parade’s End, The Serpent, and Victoria. Filming begins next month in England, Wales, and Italy.

“Black Mirror,” “Silo” and “The Last of Us” were among winners at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday night in London.

“Black Mirror” Season 6 was among a handful of shows to take home two awards, with creator Charlie Brooker and writer Bisha K Ali winning in the drama writer category while the show also won best photography and lighting in fiction category for the episode “Demon 79.”

The awards were a win for Apple TV+ with “Silo” and “Slow Horses” also each taking home two awards, the former for original music in fiction and production design and the latter for sound in fiction and editing in fiction.

Meanwhile “The Last of Us” director Peter Hoar took home an award for best fiction director.

Period drama “The Great” also picked up a gong thanks to costume designer Sharon Long.

The awards were hosted by Stacey Dooley and guest presenters included Katie Piper and Tanya Moodie.

Exclusive: Sherlock star Mark Gatiss is writing and starring in a British TV drama about a bookshop owner who helps police solve crimes.

Bookish will be a six-part series for UKTV crime drama network Alibi set in post-war London in 1946. Gatiss, the co-creator of BBC shows such as Sherlock and The League of Gentlemen and Netflix/BBC’s Dracula and actor in films including Operation Mincemeat and Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning, is the creator.

The series will follow Gabriel Book (Gatiss), an “erudite and unconventional” sleuth who cracks mysterious cases from his antiquated bookshop, using the thousands of books that line his shelves to provide him with the knowledge that he needs. Around him are a gathering of “loveable, damaged misfits who he informally protects, cajoles and mentors.”

Dreaming Whilst Black landed the Best Casting in a TV Comedy Series award for Heather Basten, Peter Noden, and Fran Cattaneo, and Louise Kiely won Best Casting in a Film for The Banshees of Inisherin.

High-profile titles that missed out on honors include Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which was nominated for Best Casting in a Film alongside Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. Kharmel Cochrane cast Saltburn and also popped in the noms for Best Casting in a Commercial for her work on Vanish ‘Me, My Autism & I.

The sixth CDG Casting Awards, handed out Wednesday evening in London, also honored the likes of the theater play Dear England, a TV adaptation of which Sky has just unveiled.

Competing for the awards were productions that premiered between Sept. 1, 2022 and Dec. 31, 2023 and they were selected as nominees by members of the guild. The Casting Directors’ Guild represents casting directors in the film, television, theater and commercials industries in the U.K. and Ireland.

Its awards celebrate “the incredible work achieved by casting teams across film, television, theater and commercials,” in partnership with global casting platform Spotlight.

Lucy Bevan, Olivia Grant (associate), Lucy Downes (assistant) are nominated in Best Casting in a Film for Barbie, with Kharmel Cochrane (Saltburn), Louise Kiley (Banshees of Inisherin), Kahleen Crawford, Carla Morris & Eliza Heslop (All of Us Strangers) and Jessie Frost (Triangle of Sadness) providing the competition.

In the Best Casting in a TV Drama Series category, Nina Gold is nominated three times, for Andor and Slow Horses Seasons 2 and 3, competing against Shaheen Baig, Jonny Boutwood and Carolyn McLeod for Boiling Point and Robert Sterne and Kate Bone for The Crown.

The list of nominees for the CDG Casting Awards, now in its sixth year, also includes the likes of The Crown, Andor, Slow Horses and All of Us Strangers.

Exclusive: Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is producing a TV thriller described as a “very British Western,” about a hotshot who discovers his family is running a drugs racket.

Empire of Dirt [working title] is being produced by Harington and Top Boy scribe Daniel West’s Thriker Films with Des producer New Pictures. Cast is unconfirmed and Harington could yet play the lead.

The eight-part thriller follows Jake, a big name in the big city who reluctantly returns to his family farm in the Lake District for a distant cousin’s wedding.

This line – spoken by David Morrissey as Dcs George Oldfield in The Long Shadow’s third episode, when 16 year old Jayne MacDonald is found dead – pretty much says it all. Because by this point in ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama, we know two other women, Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson, have also been killed, but after the police labelled them as sex workers their deaths have been treated very differently to Jayne MacDonald.

We’ve seen detectives like Oldfield refer to sex workers as “whores”, “slags”, “hookers”, “prozzies” and “tarts”, but it’s still a gut punch to viewers to hear it said so plainly: to the police – even senior detectives – sex workers who get murdered aren’t “innocent”, but somehow deserving of the violence inflicted on them.

George Kay looks conflicted. Speaking to Deadline before the resolution of the writers strike, the British WGA member had put down his pen on an Amazon Studios movie project and ducked a U.S. publicity round for his Apple TV+ series Hijack. But it’s fair to say that the strikes coincided with Kay having a serious moment.

Not unlike the protagonist in Hijack, Idris Elba’s brooding professional negotiator Sam Nelson, Kay has spent years maneuvering his way between three complex projects for Apple, Netflix and ITV/Sundance—only for them all to launch within four months of each other.

Just like Nelson’s character in Hijack—“He gets brought in, by big companies…when it all kicks off,” Nelson’s wife explains to a police officer in the show—Kay’s the man you bring in when you want to deliver a character-led thriller that will keep viewers hooked over several episodes.

“The Long Shadow,” a true crime drama by “Hijack” and “Lupin” creator George Kay, has revealed a stellar cast.

Directed by BAFTA-winner director Lewis Arnold the 7 x 60′ series for U.K. broadcaster ITV and streamer Itvx, drama is a depiction of the five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, focusing on the lives of the victims who crossed his path and those of the officers at the heart of the police investigation.

Toby Jones (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) plays Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, with David Morrissey (“Sherwood”) as George Oldfield, who took on the investigation. Toby Jones & David Morrissey Board ITV Yorkshire Ripper Drama

Toby Jones and David Morrissey have joined the cast of ITV’s Yorkshire Ripper drama from Lupin writer George Kay. The Long Shadow will air next month and is described as the “definitive depiction of the desperate five-year hunt for serial killer Peter Sutcliffe,” better known as the Yorkshire Ripper. Jones will play Dcs Dennis Hoban, who initially led the enquiry, while Morrissey, who already plays a policeman in the BBC’s Sherwood, is Dcs George Oldfield, who famoulsy took on the investigation. Lee Ingleby is Dcs Jim Hobson, whilst Katherine Kelly plays Emily Jackson with Daniel Mays as her husband, Sydney Jackson and Shaun Thomas as their son, Neil Jackson. Produced by Des outfit New Pictures and directed by Lewis Arnold, the series, which was announced three years ago, will launch next month and air on Sundance Now in the U.

Russell has joined as director of production, with responsibilities for all production and related activities at Sony Pictures Television-owned (Spt) label and its subsidiaries.
