John Savident, who played the booming voiced Fred Elliott in British soap Coronation Street, died Wednesday. He was 86.
His agent confirmed his passing in a statement to press, saying: “We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday 21 February. He was a much-loved husband and father of two and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.”
Savident joined ITV soap in 1994 as a butcher with a disastrous love life. His comic timing and turn of phrase made him one of the long-running program’s most familiar faces before his character was killed off in 2006 after almost 1,000 episodes. His quirk of adding the words, “I say” in between others has been widely parodied in the UK.
The Coronation Street X account shared an image of the actor, and wrote: “Everyone at Coronation Street is deeply saddened to learn of John Savident’s death.

New York (AP) — ABC's brainy new medical drama "Black Box" does a neat trick: It dares viewers to imagine for themselves the cost-benefit ratio of addiction, and does it without taking a firm stand. It does it in the person of lovely, top-of-her-field Dr. Catherine Black, known as "the Marco Polo of the Brain," who helps patients navigate a range of neurological disorders. She also secretly wrestles with one of her own: She's bipolar. Meanwhile, she's addicted to the mind-expanding, sometimes rapturous but ultimately dangerous effects of skipping the meds that keep her "normalized," and letting her condition run full tilt. "This show is not a generic examination of bipolarity — not at all," says series star Kelly Reilly. "This is about one woman who is an addict to her disease. The disease is treatable. But it calls for a lifetime of commitment and rearranging medications to see what works and...

Les Petits Meurtres D’Agatha Christie
Acorn Media’s latest batch of DVD releases includes something quite novel – Agatha Christie stories, in French! Les Petits Meurtres D’ Agatha Christie includes seven stand-alone mysteries that aired in France between 2009 and 2012. The stories are based on Christie classics such as the ABC murders and Cat Among the Pigeons, but the action is set in 1930s and 1950s France.
Antoine Duléry takes on the role of detective Larosière, a suave ladies man who is described as an “artiste” by none other than the police commissioner. He’s a man who enjoys the finer things in life and he also has a sense of humor. Essentially, he’s a stereotypically French version of the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The later stories involve the dashing Samuel Labarthe as Commissioner Laurence. Again, to unsophisticated English eyes he seems very much like your run-of-the-mill French fellow.

David Croft
If you write a list of your 10 favorite British TV sitcom characters, probably half of them were created by comic genius David Croft. His creations include Mr Humphries (Are You Being Served?), Sergeant Major ‘Shut up’ Williams (It Ain’t Half Hot Mum) Herr Flick (Allo, Allo) and Corporal Jones (Dad’s Army). Like many great comedy writers, Croft collaborated with others including Jimmy Perry and David Floyd. Few writers though could match his creativity or career longevity. Such was Croft’s popularity that he was a regular guest on the British TV convention circuit right up until his death at the age of 89.
Paul Abbott
BAFTA and Emmy winning writer Paul Abbott, rose from humble origins to become one of the most successful writers in British TV history. His hard-hitting dramas are far removed from the idyllic world of Marple and Midsomer Murders.

Dr Helen Castor in She Wolves
Kieran Kinsella
As a self-confessed history buff I was excited to hear that Athena’s February line-up would include the BBC documentary series She-Wolves: England’s Early Queens. This critically acclaimed show is hosted by Cambridge historian Dr Helen Castor and the content is largely drawn from her book on the same subject. As you might have guessed, the term “she-wolves” was conjured up by an anonymous misogynist hundreds of years ago to describe the powerful women who once dominated the British Isles. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that Castor portrays the women in question as helpless victims in a man’s world. She is quick to draw attention to their character flaws whilst explaining the obstacles powerful women once faced in a male dominated society.
Most of us are pretty familiar with Elizabeth I, “Bloody Mary,” and Lady Jane Grey. Things...

March is going to be a marvelous month for fans of British TV as Acorn Media and Athena release something old, something new and something that has elements that people once regarded as being … well a little blue!
Out Acorn Media
Originally broadcast in 1978, Out is a Thames TV drama about a convict named Frank Ross (Tom Bell) who emerges from jail after serving an eight year stretch for his role in a heist. Out has elements that you find in shows such as The Sweeney, Minder and dare I even say Life on Mars only this show is rather more serious than those classics. Ross is a cold customer who is intent on finding the rat who caused his arrest.

Kelly Reilly gives good argy-bargy. She's had enough of overbearing, manipulative, condescending men and boys. The actress comes up against one in her returning ITV drama, Lynda La Plante's Above Suspicion, in which she plays Detective Constable Anna Travis – wallop, the sketchy journalist who seduced and betrayed her gets a cup of scalding coffee down his front. And she confronts another in her new film, Guy Ritchie's all-action reboot of Sherlock Holmes – sploosh, he gets a glass of wine in the face. No, I'm not talking about the geezer's geezer director. Although it seems the former Mrs Madonna does like to keep his cast and crew on their toes.

London -- Musical extravaganza "Britannia High" and live soccer matches form the backbone of an ITV fall schedule that has younger viewers in its sights, director of television Peter Fincham said Wednesday.
"Britannia High," a high-energy drama about young showbiz hopefuls at a performing arts school, is aiming to attract a younger demo to primetime. While ITV hopes that hard-to-reach young male viewers will flock to its coverage of the Fa Cup and European UEFA Cup Champion's League soccer matches it recently secured for the next four years.
Other schedule highlights include "For One Night Only," billed as a "modern variety show" that brings comedy, music and entertainment acts back to Saturday nights, and the new Lynda la Plante thriller "Above Suspicion."
Fincham will take the podium at next week's Edinburgh Television Festival for his first public appearance since taking over his ITV post.
