Chiwetel Ejiofor’s directorial debut, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, is this year’s British entry for Oscar’s recently renamed Best International Feature Film category. But the same rules apply: the film must be predominantly in a language other than English. In the case of Ejiofor’s film, that language is Chichewa, the local Bantu language of Malawi. It was a language Ejiofor didn’t speak and had to learn when he decided to take on a role in the film.
The true story follows William Kamkwamba (Maxwell Simba), a young schoolboy in Kasungu, Malawi, whose family struggles to pay for his schooling when a drought leads to a devastating famine and they are unable to farm the land. It’s his enterprising thirst for science—and a desire to teach himself even when he is refused a place at school—that leads him to design a windmill...

Turns out Dwyane Wade knows how to shut down the opposition off the court as well as he did back in his Miami Heat days.
In an emotional and no-holds-barred series of social media posts, the NBA legend eviscerated the recent departure (aka he’s says “fired”) of his spouse Gabrielle Union from America’s Got Talent and what really went down at the NBC series. And it isn’t all air kisses, hugs and buzzers, if you know what I mean.
“Men lie, Women lie, numbers don’t” Over this past year I’ve been approached by many people saying that my wife @itsgabrielleu is the main reason they’ve started watching #Agt or that they love her insight and sincerity on the show.
— DWade (@DwyaneWade) November 27, 2019
So when i got the news that my wife was being fired—my first question was obviously why!? Iam still waiting on a good answer to that question.

As the WGA prepares for its upcoming negotiations for a new film and TV contract, a possible writers’ strike is on a lot of people’s minds. Given the guild’s ongoing dispute with Hollywood’s talent agencies, which is now in its eighth month, many industry observers feel that a strike is all but certain. On their latest Scriptnotes podcast, however, writers John August, a member of the guild’s contract negotiating committee, and Craig Mazin took issue with those who say a strike is inevitable.
“Over the last month, I’ve been hearing this slowly banging gong that ‘Oh, there’s going to be a strike happening,’” August said. “I just want to put a bucket of cold water on a little bit of that talk right now.”

Lucy Hale is taking over Jenny McCarthy’s New Year’s Eve gig. The Pretty Little Liars vet will join Ryan Seacrest in Times Square as the New York co-host for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Pose star Billy Porter will make his debut as the host of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve‘s New Orleans countdown, which Hale previously oversaw, while Ciara will return to take the reins of the Los Angeles festivities.

Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders threw themselves entirely into the 1960s to create their Ford v Ferrari score. Centered on two mavericks who built a revolutionary race car in ’66, to challenge Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the drama appealed to the pair as an opportunity to depart from their typical musical methods. With their electric score, which drifts between jazz and rock sounds, the pair looked to honor the musical innovation of the era depicted on screen, while capturing an energy and excitement in their cues unlike any they’d created before.
Meeting over 20 years ago at West La video rental store Lazer Blazer, the longtime collaborators worked tirelessly in their fourth collaboration with director James Mangold to represent through their score all the tension, excitement and emotion inherent to life on the racetrack. “One of the biggest challenges was not getting in the way of the picture itself,...

Still reeling after last night’s nail-biting midseason finale to The Walking Dead season 10? We wouldn’t blame you.
Not for the first time, Samantha Morton’s Alpha and her blood-thirsty Whisperers lured our heroes straight into the belly of the beast, where they found themselves with their backs to the wall… in every sense of the phrase. As viewers watched with bated breath, the full extent of Alpha’s plan began to unravel, and one of our heroes (no spoilers!) didn’t make it out alive.
But enough about spoilers; over at Deadline, The Walking Dead‘s Angela Kang fielded a series of questions about “The World Before” and what comes next for the AMC flagship. And sure enough, it wasn’t long before the showrunner was asked straight-up about the impending return of Lauren Cohan’s Maggie.

For a second year in a row, NBC is shaking up the judging panel on summer juggernaut America’s Got Talent.
Sources confirm to Deadline that new judges Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough won’t be returning next summer. Set to come back as judges are Agt staples, Simon Cowell, who is also the show’s creator and executive producer, and Howie Mandel.
Union and Hough joined Agt in Season 14, which aired this past summer. This is only the second time in the history of the show that a judge exits after a single season. The first time was after Agt‘s maiden cycle when original judge Brandy Norwood was replaced by Sharon Osbourne.
The producers decided to try something new last year by replacing long-time judges Mel B and Heidi Klum with Union and Hough. (Klum remained a judge on Agt: The Champions). Talent competition reality shows rely heavily on the chemistry among the judges,...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details about the fall finale of ABC’s A Million Little Things.
Even by A Million Little Things‘ standards of heart-wrenching drama, tonight’s Season 2 fall finale packed quite an emotional punch.
In it, Pj’s paternity drama came to a head, with him confronting his parents, Barbara and Mitch, over the DNA test results he had found that revealed Jon as his father. The test turned out to be bogus as it had used a hair from Jon’s sweater that had originally belonged to his late best friend (and Pj’s real father) Dave. But the identity crisis that the test results had thrown Pj into, coupled with the depression he had already been battling, pushed the boy over the edge, and in a scene reminiscent of Jon’s suicide in the Amlt pilot, Pj came close to jumping off a roof. The International Feature Film Oscar shortlist is due a little less than a month from now. And while it’s again a hotly-contested race, just a slight change this year — which had nothing to do with the eligibility rules — has made headlines. In an era where the Academy is endeavoring to be more inclusive and global, it also has looked to open up the traditional “foreign language” field. But in name only. That’s made more clear by International Feature Film executive committee co-chairs Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann. We recently discussed the state of things.
Deadline: This year, you changed the name of the category from Best Foreign Language Film to Best International Feature Film. What was the impetus?
Larry Karaszewski: We just though the title of the category was a little outmoded. Filmmakers are not foreigners, they’re part of the international filmmaking community. The language is not English,...

Star Trek is experiencing a nice little resurgence at the moment. The second season of Discovery went down pretty well with everyone, fans are starting to get excited for the imminent return of Picard in his own show, there are a couple different animated series in the works and let’s not forget that Quentin Tarantino is said to be putting together his own unique take on the franchise. But within all that, something still isn’t right.
We’re talking about Star Trek 4, of course, the much anticipated sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot that’s been stuck in development hell for a while now. As 2016’s Star Trek Beyond only brought in $343 million globally on a $185 million budget, the studio was unwilling to shell out too much money for the fourth installment and contract negotiations with both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth stalled. With his second stop-motion feature, Missing Link, writer/director Chris Butler took on a story with colorful characters, massive environments and a variety of complex action sequences, striving to bring a live-action quality to an animated world, which would be put together through a painstaking physical process, one frame at a time.
Centered on Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman), an investigator of myths and monsters who journeys with a sasquatch (Zach Galifianakis) into the Himalayas, to reunite the creature with his long-lost relatives, the latest feature from Laika Studios and United Artists Releasing was a massive challenge—“a bit too much of a challenge, at times,” Butler says—but one he felt compelled to take on.
As far as action sequences were concerned, Butler’s biggest inspiration with Steven Spielberg—particularly, the work he’d done with Raiders of the Lost Ark, and other films in the Indiana Jones franchise.

There’s a scene in James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari that had Tiff audiences almost rolling in the aisles. Tracy Letts as Henry Ford II is persuaded by Matt Damon’s Caroll Shelby to take Ford’s latest racecar for a spin, but the bossman is vastly underprepared for the reality of 100mph. When the car finally stops, all his gravitas turns to childlike sobs. But then the real brilliance of Letts is that within seconds, we go from laughing to crying along with him. Aside from this iconic role, he also has a turn in Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig, with whom he made Lady Bird.
Deadline: Is it true that you did that crying in the car scene in one take?
Tracy Letts: It wasn’t a one-take. In fact, we did many, many takes. It’s just that apparently James used the first take.

On the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, cinematographer Darius Khondji found himself pulled into an ’80s sensibility—a world he was not initially inclined to embrace. A tense Diamond District thriller centered on overly ambitious jeweler Howard Ratner, the mobile, high-contrast film was inspired by postmodern architecture, the work of Robert Altman, and the gaudy taste of the young and wealthy in New York.
Shooting on “very, very long” zoom lenses, Khondji says that half of the choices made were “against my so-called principles of photography”—that is, against his natural inclination toward the “glamorous and exciting” visuals of the 1970s. Leaning into the creative energy of his collaborators however, the Dp was surprised by how much he loved the final film. “This one is very special. Sterling K. Brown is known for playing Randall Pearson, the loving father in This Is Us, but in Trey Edward Shults’ family drama Waves, he shows us a very different side. As Ronald, he’s the domineering parent of Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a young man painfully striving to impress his pushy dad by becoming a great wrestler, and Emily (Taylor Russell), who is on her own difficult journey toward womanhood. The Emmy-winning Brown embraced this challenging role as a thoughtful framing of the father-son relationship, highlighting the importance of vulnerability within the masculine mindset.
Deadline: When you first read the script for Waves, what was your initial reaction, and what was it that spoke to you about this very unique story?

He may have been given the Captain America shield in Marvel blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, but Anthony Mackie shows a more serious side with Seberg. He plays Hakim Jamal, the real-life Black Panthers activist whose relationship with the French New Wave actress (Kristen Stewart) led to her being targeted by the FBI during the late 1960s. Mackie also produced and stars in The Banker—the true tale of the first African American banker in the U.S. Getting the latter financed taught him a lot about the industry, he says, while telling the story of the hounded Jean Seberg has made him grateful for his own privacy.
Deadline: What was it about this true story of Jean Seberg’s treatment by the FBI, because of her allegiance to the Black Panther organization that was so interesting to you?

The entire cast of NBC’s daytime drama Days of Our Lives are been released from their contracts, Deadline has confirmed.
As first reported by TVLine, the soap will go an indefinite hiatus at the end of the month. The cost-cutting move comes during the usual renewal window between NBC and Days distributor Sony Pictures TV; a renewal for Days typically comes at the start of the year. According to sources, negotiations for another season of the show on NBC are currently underway.
The decision to release the cast came from Corday Productions, the production entity on the series created by Ted Corday and Betty Corday. With daytime drama ratings continue to slide, and the current season (through end of summer) of Days already in the can, the company is limiting its exposure in case the series is not renewed for another season while also employing a possible negotiating tactic with the cast.

After collaborating with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg on 2016 animated comedy Sausage Party, Conrad Vernon got a chance to pitch his unique take on The Addams Family, a classic property which he had a strong personal affinity for, ever since childhood.
Reteaming with director Greg Tiernan on the project, Vernon knew going in that The Addams Family had been adapted many times before, for various mediums. Based on characters introduced by American cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938, The Addams Family had been brought to the big screen with three live-action films, beginning in 1991, and had also appeared on television in four separate series.
Looking to make his own contribution to the Addams Family canon with an animated feature, Vernon took this family of gothic oddballs and introduced them to the modern era—a moment in which people have become consumed with social media and screens of all shapes and sizes. Tackling...

One week after “Motherless Brooklyn” disappointed the box office, Warner Bros. has yet another flop in the form of “Doctor Sleep.” The Mike Flanagan-directed horror film based on Stephen King’s “The Shining” sequel was tracking for a debut in the $25 million range, but its opening weekend came in well below that mark with a dismal $14 million total. While “Doctor Sleep’s” $50 million production is a saving grace, Deadline reports the film is expected to lose between $20 million and $30 million for Warner Bros.
“Doctor Sleep” now joins “The Goldfinch,” “Gemini Man,” and “Terminator: Dark Fate” as one of the fall’s big studio tentpole flops, but that’s not how King wants it to be remembered.
Amidst headlines over the weekend bringing attention to “Doctor Sleep” bombing at the box office, King took to social media to share a defense of the film. Author Matt Serafini encouraged “Doctor Sleep...

Outside of the likes of Charles Laughton and Barbara Loden, there are seldom other directors who have earned such a reputation after directing so few films as Elaine May. With four narrative films to her name–1971’s A New Leaf, 1972’s The Heartbreak Kid, 1976’s Mikey and Nicky, and 1987’s Ishtar–and the majority initially met with either studio pushback or neglect from audiences, it has, sadly, resulted in May not helming a film in over 30 years.
While she did direct the TV documentary Mike Nichols: American Masters a few years ago, May also wrote with her longtime collaborator Nichols on a few projects in the past few decades since Ishtar. One film was set to be directed by May’s partner Stanley Donen, who co-wrote the script with her, and produced by Nichols, but with both men now sadly having passed away, it never saw the light of day.

Francis Ford Coppola dominated headlines earlier this month when he was quoted out of the Lumière Festival in Lyon, France as calling Marvel movies “despicable.” Coppola was responding to a question about whether or not he agreed with Martin Scorsese, who criticized Marvel films for turning cinema into a theme park. In a new interview with Deadline, Coppola says his “despicable” quote was not translated correctly. The director clarified the word “despicable” was not being used directly for Marvel films but for the overall film industry’s general push into making commerce films over art.
Deadline includes Coppola’s actual statement made in France, which reads, “Well you know because of the lack of risk in the production. Marty Scorsese says that the Marvel picture is not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. The one-two punch from Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola about how superhero movies aren’t cinema did not reflect what Coppola meant to say when he was quoted in Lyon, France, while being awarded the country’s Prix Lumière honor for career achievement. That is how Coppola now feels about it, after watching his comments fuel so many stories that put directors of those films in the position of having to justify their work.
While Coppola on Monday was busy battening down the hatches as wildfires ravaged Sonoma County near his Napa Valley vineyards, the filmmaker found a moment to convey his displeasure to Deadline over how his answer to a question about Scorsese’s superhero film misgivings was misinterpreted as a condemnation of those films. In truth, Coppola — who in his time has risked his personal fortune on passion film projects more often than any of his peers — was...

After a long run that took the comic giant into the live-action small-screen business, Jeph Loeb is leaving Marvel Television.
The four-time Eisner Award winner and Heroes co-ep will exit the home of the concluding Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. and the upcoming Helstrom by the end of the year, sources close to the Marvel matter tell Deadline. “Jeph has been thinking about making a change for a while, and now seemed the right time to take that step,” asserted one source in reference to the recent awarding to Kevin Feige of the title of chief creative officer for all of the Marvel empire.
In another sharp-elbow move at the Disney-owned Marvel, the new title sidelines Dan Buckley and makes Loeb a direct report to Feige. Marvel and Disney did not respond to request for comment on news of Loeb’s forthcoming departure

Raising the stakes on the war picture subgenre, Sam Mendes’ 1917 is told in one long camera shot.
The Universal release tells the story of two young British soldiers during WWI who are given an impossible mission: deliver a message deep in enemy territory that will stop their own men, and Blake’s own brother, from walking straight into a deadly trap. Total lives that could be potentially saved? We’re talking about 1,600.

Exclusive: Brett Weitz continues to expand his turf at WarnerMedia. Eight months after he was promoted from Evp Programming for TBS to General Manager of TNT and TBS, Weitz is also taking on oversight of truTV. With the new title of General Manager of TNT, TBS & TruTV, he will now manage all three networks and oversee their creative executive teams and development in New York and Los Angeles. Concurrently, Thom Hinkle, most recently Evp Original Programming at TBS, has been upped to head of original content for all three networks, bringing TNT and truTV into his role.

The $2.8 million production, which closed this past Sunday, had a limited engagement of only nine weeks – 74 performances – at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre, and went out on a high note: The final week of performances grossed $854,678, the highest in the show’s run.
Produced by Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories, Ambassador Theatre Group, Seaview Productions, and Benjamin Lowy Productions, Sea Wall/A Life completed a sold-out Off Broadway run at the Public Theater last winter before making the jump to Broadway over the summer. Previews at the Hudson began July 26, with an official opening of Aug. 8, making for a total of 14 previews and 60 regular performances.
Written by Simon Stephens and Nick Payne, with both directed by Carrie Cracknell, the pair of one acts received universal critical acclaim, with the Hudson 96% full, on average, throughout the run.
According to Ambassador Theatre Group, which owns the Hudson, 73% of ticket
buyers were first time Hudson attendees, suggesting an unusually large percentage of young or first-time theater-goers. The producers said that, according to TodayTix figures, about 65% of purchases for the production on that particular platform were made by buyers under 44 years old.
“Simon, Nick, Carrie, Jake, and Tom created a daring and unforgettable piece of art that critics and audiences responded to, with many returning multiple times,” said Riva Marker, producer, president and co-founder (with Gyllenhaal) of Nine Stories. “The great success of Sea Wall/A Life proved that storytelling in its most elemental form – a single actor, alone on stage – can connect with people and create a must-see theatrical experience. Opening on Broadway during the season’s toughest months of summer for a limited run and returning our investment in nine weeks is nothing short of a coup. We are incredibly grateful to the audiences, many first-time theatergoers to Hudson Theatre.”
During previews, Gyllenhaal and Sturridge began hosting weekly talkbacks with audiences on the plays’ topics of “love, faith, family, and loss,” a no-doubt popular attraction given the stars’ popularity. In the production’s final weeks, audience members were invited to share their personal stories, which were then posted on the production’s social media.
Gyllenhaal and Sturridge also recorded Sea Wall/A Life as an Audible Original production, Deadline reported last month, for an upcoming release.
The creative team for Sea Wall/A Life included Laura Jellinek (scenic design), Kaye Voyce (costume design), Christopher Peterson (costume design), Guy Hoare (lighting design), Daniel Kluger (sound design), Luke Halls (projection design), and Stuart Earl (original music).
