John Magaro went from an extra on a Steven Spielberg film to leading his own movie about the same tragic events 20 years later.
Magaro has steadily built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, seamlessly transitioning between indie gems and major studio films such as “Not Fade Away” and “Past Lives.” But despite his steady rise in the industry, he remains grounded and deeply connected to the craft of acting, driven by a passion for storytelling and a dedication to exploring the complexities of each role.
In this episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Magaro discusses his latest project, Paramount Pictures’ “September 5” — a dramatic thriller about the 1972 Munich Olympics hostage crisis. He also reflects on his early days in the business, which included an unexpected start as an extra in Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film “Munich,” a full-circle moment for him. Listen below.

Fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” were sad when her love interest and fan favorite Angel announced his departure at the end of the third season. But the character of Angel, played by David Boreanaz, got his own spin-off show that took him away from Sunnydale and to the big city of Los Angeles. “Angel” debuted on October 5, 1999 and immediately split fans on which was the “better” show. Read on for more about the “Angel” 25th anniversary.
The character of Angel was born an Irishman named Liam, who was turned into a vampire by Darla (Julie Benz) over two centuries before, and became the sadistic and feared Angelus, who caused years of death and destruction across Europe. But he wreaked havoc on the wrong people when he angered the Romani clan, who cursed him with his human soul filled with memories of the pain he has caused. His guilt and...

Today, The Rolling Stones‘ debut album turned 60. Hats off to Mick Jagger and company for staying together this long against all odds! Here’s a look at their debut album’s triumphs and tragedies.
13. ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You’
The lively rhythm here is ruined by some questionable lyrics. In this song, Jagger compares himself to an enslaved person. It’s tasteless, but what would you expect from the same band that would later give us such racist atrocities as “Brown Sugar” and “Some Girls?” At least this song didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like “Brown Sugar” did.
12. ‘You Can Make It If You Try’
Placed near the end of the album, “You Can Make It If You Try” is a self-empowerment song that feels tedious and endless. The Rolling Stones made it. They tried. This song didn’t help them get there.

Deadline reports that The Sopranos creator David Chase is set to reteam with Terence Winter for an untitled horror movie set up at New Line Cinema.
David Chase is expected to direct the movie, which he will also co-write alongside Terence Winter. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but given the Sopranos pedigree, my mind immediately leaps to Cleaver, the fictional movie within the HBO series produced by Christopher Moltisanti. While I doubt that Chase and Winter are going the slasher route, it’s still fun to imagine.

Premiering 25 years ago this January, David Chase’s crime saga The Sopranos has been a blessing and a curse for the creator. On the former side, he was behind what is still among the greatest television shows to grace the medium. On the latter, it’s been a difficult peak to live up to, the only projects he’s tackled since being his overlooked 2012 directorial debut Not Fade Away and revisiting the world in the disappointing The Many Saints of Newark, which he co-wrote and produced.
Now, Chase is finally getting back in the director’s chair for the first time in 13 years with a new feature: Deadline reports he’ll reteam with his Sopranos collaborator Terence Winter on a horror film at New Line Cinema. Chase has directing duties for the WB project, boasting a script he’ll write with Winter, marking the first time the duo have collaborated on a feature screenplay.

Prior to a couple of months ago, Bob Dylan had only played covered four Grateful Dead songs (“Friend of the Devil,” “West L.A. Fadeaway,” “Alabama Getaway,” “Black Muddy River”) throughout his entire career as a live performer. He added two more into the mix (“Truckin'” and “Brokedown Palace”) during a Japanese leg of the Never Ending Tour in April, and during a stop in Barcelona, Spain on Friday night he broke out a beautiful rendition of “Stella Blue” from the Dead’s 1973 LP Wake of the Flood:

In 2012, Bruce Springsteen felt starstruck to be in a room with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts. He was joining The Rolling Stones in concert in New Jersey, something that would have felt like a dream to his childhood self. Springsteen explained that he found Richards particularly impressive. He’d learned to play his first guitar solo through Richards’ playing. He also thought the guitarist was the most spectrally beautiful person he’d seen.

The Rolling Stones eventually developed into a band capable of writing their own No. 1 hits, but they relied on cover songs and kind composers giving them music on many of their early tunes. John Lennon and Paul McCartney gave the Stones the song that became their first hit. Mick Jagger and Keith Richard gave away a top-10 hit to another musician before The Rolling Stones notched a top-10 tune of their own.

After creating one of the greatest TV shows of all time, with HBO’s “The Sopranos,” you’d think David Chase would have turned that into a golden ticket to make years and years of whatever TV shows or films he wanted. The Sopranos creator David Chase is getting into business with FX.
Chase and A Teacher creator Hannah Fidell are co-writing and co-creating a drama for the Disney-owned outlet. Details are being kept quiet, but it’s based on a previously unproduced script of Chase’s, with a contemporary take by Fidell.

Chase and A Teacher creator Hannah Fidell are co-writing and co-creating a drama for the Disney-owned outlet. Details are being kept quiet, but it’s based on a previously unproduced script of Chase’s, with a contemporary take by Fidell.
FX Productions is behind the project, which has a pilot commitment. Fidell will also direct; Chase, Fidell and Chase Films’ Nicole Lambert are executive producing.

Much like its parent show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" relied heavily on metaphor. However, while "Buffy" dealt with the high school experience, only truly going dark in its later seasons, "Angel" always sought to tell more adult-oriented stories. The spin-off never quite reached the same heights of the original, but it came pretty damn close, and there are certain aspects of the series that were even stronger. For one, just about every character who made the jump from "Buffy" to "Angel" was the better for it. Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Wesley (Alexis Denisof), Faith (Eliza Dushku), and Darla (Julie Benz) all went from being relatively one-dimensional, to becoming some of the best characters in the entire Buffyverse. Even Harmony (Mercedes McNab) was vastly improved.
Perhaps the biggest revelation was Angel (David Boreanaz) himself. A broody hunk who was far more interesting when he actually went evil, Buffy's former beau was...

"The Sopranos" isn't the first gangster show on television and it won't be the last, but it certainly made the biggest splash. Over six sprawling seasons from 1999 to 2007, David Chase's HBO series told the story of his own warped family dynamic, infused into a mobster's mid-life crisis. A decade and a half after its finale, the show has become one of the most celebrated of all time.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Chase talked about the show and the lessons that came of it. The "Not Fade Away" director was no stranger to writing for episodic tv; prior credits include "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" and private eye series "The Rockford Files." It was on these shows that Chase learned the boundaries of network television writing – "Rockford" taught that he could make his hero do all sorts of awful acts as long as he's competent at what he does.

A moment of silence, please, for “This Is Spinal Tap,” as that satire formally abdicates its title as the best and truest movie ever made about what it’s like to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band. There was something wonderful, silly and sad about how, up until now, musicians had to look to the fabricated saga of an unabashedly terrible group to be able to say, “Yes, this is our story.” Heaven knows there’ve been other fictional tales that tried to pull off that same kind of Everyband story while treating rock with a modicum of dignity, too — some with a bit of success (“That Thing You Do!”), others not so much so (David Chase’s “Not Fade Away”). And we’ve seen our share of rock documentaries that brilliantly captured an artist at a singular moment in time, and/or looked to unwrap a riddle wrapped...

Considered, along with Mad Men and Breaking Bad, one of the definitive, defining series of long-form, serial storytelling and TV’s New Golden Age, The Sopranos, creator David Chase’s innovative mob family drama, ended its award-winning, zeitgeist-redefining run with a fade-to-black in 2007 that remains incredibly divisive fourteen years later. Chase eventually moved on to write and direct a modestly received period drama, Not Fade Away five years after The Sopranos aired its final episode on HBO. Chase went silent for almost a decade, eventually deciding to return to the Sopranos universe not with a sequel series or a standalone film, but with The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel tracing the central, toxic influence on...

Exclusive: Call it an offer he couldn’t refuse. After The Sopranos creator David Chase told Deadline in today’s interview that he would be interested in doing another film about the formative years of Tony Soprano — as long as it meant reuniting with longtime series writer and executive producer Terence Winter, Deadline reached out to Winter, who said: “The idea of doing another one, and doing it with David, I’d be in in a heartbeat. Absolutely.”
Before fans of The Sopranos get too hot and bothered about the idea of another film tracing the formative years of the core cast, The Many Saints of Newark has to please Warner Bros and New Line, the studios that made it. Exclusive: Some 14 years after he said all he had to say about a Jersey mob family, and ended The Sopranos in shocking fashion, it turns out David Chase has much more to say. The result is The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel of sorts set against the Newark race riots, and focusing on charming sociopath mobster Dickie Moltisanti. He is the father of Christopher, Tony’s right-hand man in the series played by Michael Imperioli (who makes his presence known in a way we’ll leave as a surprise). Dickie is a mentor to young Tony (played by the late James Gandolfini’s son Michael), and an ally of Harold McBrayer (played by Leslie Odom Jr), an up-and-coming gangster on the Black side of town who becomes his mortal enemy.

When Michael Gandolfini arrived at Vera Farmiga’s house to meet her for the first time, he had a bouquet of flowers in hand, like a dutiful son visiting his mother. If you’re going to make a prequel movie to “The Sopranos,” then you better let at least one “Sopranos” cast member to consult on the final cut. Such was the case for Steven Van Zandt, the E Street Band guitarist who starred as Silvio Dante in the Emmy-winning HBO mafia drama. “The Sopranos” prequel movie, “The Many Saints of Newark,” includes a younger iteration of Silvio played by “First Cow” actor John Magaro. Van Zandt recently told SiriusXM (via THR) that creator David Chase showed early cuts of the movie to him and asked for feedback.
“I saw several of the early cuts,” Van Zandt said. “He’s been tinkering now with it for a couple of years. So it may be a whole different movie by the time I see it again. He wanted me and [wife and fellow ‘Sopranos’ actress] Maureen to see it and give him some input. Silvio is in it,...

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.
