John Frey, an actor, screenwriter, director and teacher known for the 2018 film “Cabaret Maxime,” died on Jan. 23 of heart failure. He was 62.
Born in the Bronx, Frey graduated from the prestigious William Esper Studio for actors and had a 25-year international career in film, theater and television. Frey’s early theater acting and directing credits include “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “27 Wagons Full of Cotton,” “Miss Julie” and “Of Mice and Men.” His most recent project was as an actor and screenwriter for Bruno de Almeida’s film “Cabaret Maxime,” which won him the Portuguese Society of Authors best screenplay award.
“An artist pure of heart and generous of spirit has been taken from us far too soon,” a representative for the William Esper Studio said in a statement. “John was a critically-acclaimed director, award-winning screenwriter and among the most respected acting technique teachers in the world.”

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Earlier today, Disc Dish had a chance to speak with Michael Imperioli (The Lovely Bones)—late of TV’s The Sopranos and Life on Mars and currently keeping the streets of urban Michigan safe in Detroit 1-8-7– about his film 2009 The Hungry Ghosts, which is available on DVD from Virgil Films and is currently streaming on Hulu.com.
Written and directed by Imperioli, the movie follows 36 hours in the lives of a group of spiritually bereft New Yorkers including, among others, a hard-living New York City call-in radio show host (Steven Schirripa, Open Season 3), his high-voltage wife (Sharon Angela, TV’s The Sopranos) and a grungy downtown gabber just out of rehab (Nick Sandow, Frame of Mind). Oh, and there’s also a lot of cocaine, booze, gambling, stripping and sex.

Considering that Toy Story 3 is now one of the highest grossing movies of all time (#4 to be exact), I think we can safely say that it is by far the biggest DVD / Blu-ray release of the week. Michael Imperioli has been cast as the lead in writer-director Richard Ledes' horror-thriller "Foreclosure."
The former "Sopranos" star joins Wendell Pierce, Bill Raymond, Jeff Burchfield, Meital Dohan, Brandon Gill, Spencer List, Tristan Laurence Perez, William Stone Mahoney and Roger Robinson in the creeper.
With a tagline of "ghosts don't move out," "Foreclosure" sets its action in a nearly empty, economically depressed neighborhood block, amid the real-life context of the mortgage crisis where so many homes are bank-owned.
Ged Dickersin ("City Island") is producing the project, which Ledes will begin shooting in Queens next week.
"Michael Imperioli is a great actor with a deep understanding of filmmaking," said Ledes. "Like a jazz ensemble, I can't imagine a better artist to join the two cats with whom I've had the privilege to work previously and who are back for 'Foreclosure': Wendell Pierce and Bill Raymond."

Whatever you think of the specs, it's nice to finally be able to refer to the iPad in one word instead of qualifying Apple's new product title as "unofficial," and Twitter-Wood is using it all over the place, even if some citizens thing the device sounds like a feminine care product.

Roy Disney's death today was big news in Twitter-Wood, where a lot of folks have been affected by his work and commitment to animation over the course of their careers. It's certainly appropriate that "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich was among the first to post his condolences.
And speaking of animation, Danny DeVito made it onto the guest list for the "Avatar" premiere tonight, and took a picture of his excitable foot to prove it. His "Twins" co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger posted

It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for December 16, 2009.

To benefit Golden Bridge for Tibet, Michael Imperioli held a preview screening last week of his new film "The Hungry Ghosts." On behalf of 'Golden Bridge', Tibetan Lama Namkha Rinpoche spoke to an audience that included "Sopranos" family members Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Robert Iler, and Lorraine Bracco among others. Michael Imperioli is unquestionably an enormously impressive and engaging actor. In fact, he's a great actor. With "The Hungry Ghosts" he adds writer/director to his resume and pulls masterful performances from Steven R. Schirripa, Sharon Angela, Nick Sandow, and Aunjanue Ellis. I asked Imperioli to sit for my Huffington Post portrait series, and to write a few words about his new film "The Hungry Ghosts". While attending the screening of his directorial debut “The Hungry Ghosts” in New York City, someone armed with an entertainment blog had the balls to ask “The Sopranos” veteran Michael Imperioli about the rumors surrounding a possible big-screen version of the popular HBO series. His answer, of course, was a resounding “No.” Of course, this mean absolutely nothing, as things change at the drop of a hat deep within the heart of the Great Hollywood Money Machine. The thing that bothers me the most about this particular piece of fleeting entertainment news isn’t the fact that the movie isn’t going to happen — it’s the fact that someone felt the need to inquire about “The Sopranos” when Imperioli was there to promote a completely unrelated project. Heaven forbid they ask questions that actually pertain to “The Hungry Ghosts.” Here’s an idea: When you’re hired to cover...

The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled 5-0 today that Al Franken won last year’s Senate election, and it didn’t take long for responses to start popping up in the Twitter-Wood feed, including reactions from Larry King and Graham Linehan. The conversations weren’t all political though. Rose McGowan showed off a shot a of the new dog she adopted and Demi Moore posted her own puppy shot of Ashton Kutcher rolling around on the set of his new movie “Five Killers.” Meanwhile, “Twilight” actor Peter Facinelli was just innocently trying on a bikini and Russell Brand kept to what he does best, lacing an apology to his neglected Twitter followers with dog-and-leg-humping imagery. Dive in, because I’ve got behind-the-scenes commentary from Jon Favreau, Ashton Kutcher, and Jeremy Piven in today’s handpicked crop of Twitter-Wood tweets. Favreau offers some praise up for Mickey Rourke’s work thus far in “Iron Man 2,” and Kutcher shares his thoughts on the foreign dubbing process for his new film “Spread,” while Piven points out the common links between his new movie “The Goods” and this summer’s box office success story “The Hangover.”
I also rounded up a few thoughts from film folks about yet another entertainment industry death, comedian and impersonator, Fred Travelena, as well as Bernard Madoff’s sentencing today, and Denzel Washington’s latest post about Michael Jackson. You find all of these, a picture taken by “Buffy” actress Amber Benson at one of my local Chicago comic book shops, and much more in the Twitter-Wood update for June 29, 2009, after the click.

Rotterdam Film Festival Opening Night Film
Cicala Filmworks, the New York-based production outfit behind IFFR’s opening film, The Hungry Ghosts is run by Stefan Schaefer and Diane Crespo. It is planning a Little Miss Sunshine-style comedy called Forth and Multiply. Sopranos star (and The Hungry Ghosts director) Michael Imperioli is expected to take a central role in the film, which is about a mother and two daughters at a transitional point in their lives. “It’s about fertility, love and loss,” Crespo (who will co-direct with Schaefer) says. The script is ready. Cicala is aiming to go into pre-production in the spring. This will be the second feature that Crespo and Schaefer have co-directed, after festival hit Arranged (2007), which was about the friendship between two women, one an orthodox Jew and the other a Muslim. Meanwhile, Cicala is looking to extend its working relationship with writer-actor-director Imperioli. Schaefer met Imperioli when they were appearing together in Icelandic film The Higher Force. Like Schaefer and Crespo, Imperioli is from a theatre background. He and his wife Victoria run Studio Dante, a theatre company in New York. Many of the actors in The Hungry Ghosts came from the company.

Fourteen titles have been announced which are first and second features in competition for Iffr's top honor, the Vpro Tiger award. The Hungry Ghosts, the directorial debut of Sopranos actor and Goodfella's Spider (haha!) will be opening the fest. Simon Ellis's debut feature Dogging: A Love Story which we reported on here will also be playing. The story revolves around the risque sex scene that is dogging which I guess has to do with voyeurism. The list is a good mixture of film from all over the planet, but I have yet to go through the rest.

Filmmaker Michael Imperioli's directorial debut "The Hungry Ghosts" will open the 38th edition of the Rotterdam International Film Festival Jan. 21, 2009.
Set in and around New York over a period of 36 hours, the film follows a group of characters floating like ghosts through life, looking for happiness and hoping to fulfill a desire.
Steve Schirripa stars as a late-night radio host who gambles and uses drugs at the expense of his teenage son. Also starring is Nick Sandow, who plays a philosophical seeker who is looking for his ex-lover after leaving detox.
Imperioli is known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti on television's "The Sopranos." He also co-wrote the screenplay for Spike Lee's "Summer of Sam." "Ghosts" is his debut as a director.
"Michael Imperioli reveals his talent in the subtle way in which he makes this both human and occasionally contradictory urge visible," Festival Director Rutger Wolfson wrote in a press release.

London -- The 38th International Film Festival Rotterdam will open with the world premiere of "The Hungry Ghosts," organizers said Wednesday.
The movie marks the directorial debut of scriptwriter, theater director and actor Michael Imperioli, already a famous face from his role as Christopher Moltisanti in the HBO series "The Sopranos."
Iffr opens Jan. 21 and runs through Feb. 1. The film, set in New York and its surroundings in a period of 36 hours, contains several narrative lines. In one of these, late-night radio host Frank gambles and uses drugs at the expense of his teenage son. In another, philosophical seeker Gus, fresh out of a detox program, searches for his ex-lover Nadia. It becomes clear that their stories will come together in the end.
