Director: Kiyoshi Yamamoto. Review: Adam Wing. We’ve all been in broken relationships before; you might toy with the idea of changing your Face book status in the hope that she’ll take a hint. Maybe send her a text message utilising a well placed smiley in order to ease the pain. You could always go for coffee and have a heart to heart, running the risk of being beaten to death with the remains of an amaretto biscuit of course. Thing is, the year is 1999. Face book hasn’t been created yet, coffee shops only exist in the movies and mobile phones are a relatively new (not to mention bricky) concept. The only option is to hope that she realises the relationship is doomed first, either that or hold out for another couple of years until text dumping has truly caught on. Point being, keeping in touch was an...

While you can make a pretty good argument that the J-Horror ship has sailed you also shouldn’t forget taht the reason the boom started in the first place is because when done right that distinctly Japanese approach to horror films is pretty damn effective. Is there still a bit of gas in the J-Horror tank? Well, back during the Cannes market I had the chance to see a reel of footage from Kiyoshi Yamamoto’s upcoming End Call and came away surprisingly impressed. It’s a very well shot and well constructed film and while the premise is nothing new - a group of high school girls make a deal with the devil via cell phone and end up dead - it looks to be very well executed. If you’ll pardon the pun.
Anyway ... we have just been given what I believe is the very first look at...

Did you know the devil had a cell phone? I can’t imagine why you would think otherwise; they are a tool of evil for most. But did you know if you call his cell phone at midnight, he will grant your wish? Yep. The only catch is he controls your life for the duration of the call.
Ah, there’s always a catch, isn’t there? In Kiyoshi Yamamoto’s End Call, that catch is the heart of the film; a group of high school girls make the call to get their wishes but end up dead. Now, before you brush it off as just another lame J-horror film about their fear of technology, know that some early word on it is actually pretty positive. Could this be the one that brings J-horror back to cool?
