Ullam narrates the story of kuttan(Suresh Gopi) who marries radha(geethu Mohandas) and have a son appu. He loves his son a lot. One day, when he hears the rumour of the vehicle his son was travelling meets with an accident, kuttan is left with a shock. Though appu returns unhurt kuttan does not recover and turns mentally unstable. When the family is unable to handle kuttan, his father in law (kalasala babu) and few villagers decides to abandon him in kanyakumari streets. Appu misses his father a lot. When radha's parents plan her remarriage, appu decides to go alone to kanyakumari to bring kuttan back.
Suresh Gopi gives a brilliant performance as kuttan. You will feel sad to see him. He was a strong contender for that years state awards but lost to Mammooty. Geethu Mohandas has only got to cry in the whole film. Child actor was good. The only song aadadee was melodious and heart touching. Making is similar to thaniyavarthanam which gives you a feeling whether it's a sequel to the former. The biggest drawback of the film is it's very depressing. Malayalam films had many tragic tearjerkers like kireedam, thaniyavarthanam, aakashadoothu, thanmathra etc but those films had a light first act and gets serious later. But in case of ullam it's depressing from start to finish without any moment of relief. Another drawback I felt was the ending which I was not satisfied at all. On the whole, if you are fan of depressing films then you can watch ullam.
