The B-movie world has lost one of its most iconic filmmakers, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Bert I. Gordon – often referred to as “Mr. B.I.G.” by his fans – has passed away at the age of 100. Gordon produced and directed more than twenty films over the course of a career that lasted sixty-one years, from 1954 to 2015. He also wrote most of his movies. His most popular titles include The Food of the Gods, Empire of the Ants, The Amazing Colossal Man, War of the Colossal Beast, Attack of the Puppet People, and Beginning of the End.
Born on September 24, 1922 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Gordon fell in love with filmmaking at a young age, being given his first camera when he was just 9 years old. He started making TV commercials after he graduated from college, then produced the horror adventure film Serpent Island in 1954. He was also the cinematographer on that movie,...

Bert I. Gordon, the sci-fi director who aimed to terrify drive-in denizens of the 1950s and ’60s with low-budget films featuring colossal creatures, shrinking humans and radioactive monsters, has died. He was 100.
Gordon died Wednesday in Los Angeles of complications from a fall in his Beverly Hills home, his daughter Patricia Gordon told The Hollywood Reporter.
Highlights (lowlights?) on his B-movie résumé include The Cyclops (1957), The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), Beginning of the End (1957), Earth vs. the Spider (1958), Attack of the Puppet People (1958), Tormented (1960), The Boy and the Pirates (1960) and Picture Mommy Dead (1966).
In the ’70s, Gordon directed Vince Edwards and Chuck Connors in The Police Connection (1973) and wrote and directed How to Succeed With Sex (1970), Necromancy (1972), The Food of the Gods (1976) and, starring Joan Collins in the muck, Empire of the Ants (1977).
Perhaps as a way to keep costs down, Gordon’s films often were family affairs: His late wife,...

The Strays is a thriller movie written and directed by Nathaniel Martello-White starring Ashley Madekwe.
The Strays appears to be a classic tv film with an actress that has been in hundreds of these and, however, the film has a look and theme that is more film centered close to Don´t Worry Darling or Us (the Jordan Peele movie) in its subject, although it is more English in its aesthetics.
Movie Review The Strays (2023)
This movie poses interesting considerations in a thriller, a little like the “new horror” of Peele, with intrigue that basically revolves around a greater vindication, which is entertainment in the form of a nightmare in English suburbia.
However, the great director with his ironies and suspense formulas is absent in this pic. Here the suspense is more horror and the intentions posed in the first third of the movie (especially in the look of the...

Director Jon Wright has a good track record when it comes to comedy horror, having previously made high school slasher Tormented (2009) and boozy creature feature Grabbers (2012). His latest film, Unwelcome, adds more monsters to his menagerie, in an effective genre offering that plays like Straw Dogs meets Gremlins, by way of Leprechaun.
Unwelcome opens in a dodgy area of London, where newly pregnant couple Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) are brutally beaten after local thugs invade their flat. Nine months later, with Maya’s baby imminent, the pair relocate to rural Ireland, after Jamie inherits his aunt’s house.

Two feet, filmmaker Jon Wright and his team have established, is the optimum height for a creature you don’t want to find in your bedroom. Whilst writer/director Jason Krawczyk also trades places, giving up the directorial reigns to Audrey Cummings to...

Directed by Bert I. Gordon
Fresh off producing and directing Tormented, a mildly lurid psychological shocker released in 1960, Bert I. Gordon pointed his next film in the direction of the Saturday matinee crowd, a select audience of thrill crazy adolescents who made box office bonanzas out of phantasmagorical entertainments like 7th Voyage of Sinbad. As with most (all?) of Gordon’s work, his eyes were too big for his stomach – the 1962 fairy tale called for Sinbad-sized thrills but Gordon was working with a fraction of Ray Harryhausen’s budget and a two week shooting schedule. If nothing else the director was determined to put up on the screen what was promised on the poster, “The Most Unbelievable Sights Ever Seen” but once again, Mr. Big came up short.

First off if, like me, you saw the title of this movie and was a little put off, rest assured that Fractured is much better than the generic title…
After looking up director Jamie Patterson it should have been no surprise that he has directed quite a few films (although not any I have actually seen), because Fractured looks very much like a movie made by an experienced filmmaker. It looks great and I loved some of the camera work. There’s some expert use of lighting and several really interesting and simply fantastic-looking shots. Things that might sound simple but on screen are so much more. Like an almost black and white shot of a house with one character in light (and therefore colour) seen through a window.

Darken is new Sci-Fi thriller from director Audrey Cummings, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Audrey a few questions about what we can expect from Darken, expanding on the universe and the inspirations for the look and style of the film.
What can we expect from the film?

John Badham has written a couple of excellent books where he passed on advice about directing movies, and the lessons he's learned across his own career. In the latest, John Badham On Directing, he raises the spectre of filming sex scenes, and the problems that ensue.
Actors get really spooked when it comes to intimacy in a scene, even kissing", he wrote. "This is where the director has to be extremely patient with the actors and know that the emotional or intimate part of scenes don’t always shoot as easily as the production department thinks they should. Jon Wright on directing Robot Overlords, working with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, and why he made an 80s-style family film.
Three films in, and Jon Wright is very much a director whose output is worth keeping an eye on. His first full feature, Tormented, was an effective horror with some strong moments, but it was Grabbers where he really struck gold. It remains, along with Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, our favourite horror comedy of recent times. Wright has taken a different turn for his new movie, Robot Overlords, a sci-fi movie aimed at a family audience. And he spared us some time to natter about it...
Can you put into words how you're feeling, on the eve of your film's release?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about the release, as you would be. Hoping it goes well. And I'm reading all the press that people are writing, which I actually think is very interesting.

With Robot Overlords out in cinemas this week, Gillian Anderson chats to us about family movies, sci-fi, and her love of Studio Ghibli.
Robot Overlords is the new film from director Jon Wright, who previously gave the world Tormented, and the terrific Grabbers. It's a throwback of sorts to the kind of movies we got for families in the 1980s, and his impressive cast is anchored by Gillian Anderson and Sir Ben Kingsley. We got to speak to Gillian Anderson ahead of the film's release. And having established that there's no fresh news on the X-Files reboot that had been chatted about earlier in the year, here's how things went.
Here's a nice way to start: I enjoyed this!
[Laughs]
I figure it best to start with honesty! I tend to watch films like Robot Overlords through the eyes of my 11-year old son. What I took from him was firstly,...

The incredible horror comedy Grabbers (review) is finally on its way home Stateside so grab a brew and drink in the details. Look for it in stores on November 12th!
From the Press Release
On Erin Island, an idyllic fishing village off the coast of Ireland, charming inebriate Ciaran O'Shea (Richard Coyle; Pusher, "Coupling") is tasked with showing strait-laced police officer Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley; "Primeval," In Her Skin) her new beat. Not that there's much to police, as most of the community's troubles are caused by O'Shea himself. But strange doings are afoot: The crew of a fishing boat disappears, dead whales wash up on the shore, and a local lobsterman catches a mysterious tentacled creature in his trap.
Soon it becomes clear to O'Shea and Nolan that some unnatural creatures are out there, and they're hungry. But it turns out the alien monsters terrorizing the town are allergic...

Gorgeous Brit actress Tuppence Middleton (below) has signed up for the lead role in David Bruckner's new horror feature 'Intrusion'. Middleton, whose previous credits include British thriller 'Chatroom', revenge horror 'Tormented' and the excellent Channel 4 dark drama series 'Black Mirror', will play the role of Lila Harper who moves to San Francisco only to end up the target of organised stalkers who invade her new home. Bruckner's previous genre effort was his 'Amaetur Night' segment in found-footage horror anthology 'V/H/S' where a trio of friends become the prey of a mysterious bat-like woman. He will direct from a script penned by L.D. Goffigan. Middleton will also be seen next in the Wachowski Brothers' new sci-fi feature Jupiter Ascending....

Don’t Snatch This Mixed Bag
Irish director Jon Wright seems content spoon feeding audiences with derivative genre efforts, or at least one could surmise after his sophomore feature, Grabbers is bestowed upon audiences. Wright’s 2009 debut, Tormented, was about a bullied teen come back from the dead to slaughter his posh UK prep school torturers, which had about as much finesse as 1999’s The Rage: Carrie 2. And now, we’re treated to an Irish creature feature about alien cephalopod’s intent on sucking blood. Intentionally goofy, and drearily written, your reception of the film will all depend on how high you set your stakes. Think Tremors (1990) was a classic? Maybe you’ll enjoy this tired flick.
Richard Coyle stars as Garda Ciaran O’Shea, a notorious drunkard, who has to be babysat by a substitute Garda, Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley) when his boss has to take a two-week trip.

"It's always the quiet places where the madness happens." IFC Midnight has released the full Us trailer for Grabbers, an indie sci-fi monster movie from Ireland about some weird octopus-like aliens that find their way into a small fishing village off the West coast of Ireland. Richard Coyle, Ruth Bradley and Russell Tovey star in this drunken, comedic sci-fi thriller that looks like it might have some good FX work hidden throughout. The amusing setup is that if they drink alcohol their blood will be poisonous to the creatures, keeping them safe, or something like that. The poster art is pretty damn cool as well, added it below. Enjoy! Here's the latest official Us trailer for Jon Wright's Grabbers, originally from IGN: Directed by Irish filmmaker Jon Wright (Tormented), from a script by Kevin Lehane, Grabbers tells the story of Ciarán O'Shea, a charming but heavy-drinking local Garda who...

Are you one of the many complaining about the lack of original stories being made into movies? Well, then you might appreciate the upcoming British offering Our Robot Overlords, a coming-of-age tale set in the midst of a dramatic battle between man and machine. Co-written and directed by Jon Wright, who has previously helmed the alien invasion comedy Grabbers and the horror-comedy Tormented, this sci-fi adventure centers on a teen boy who with the help of his peers goes in search of his long lost father as a war between mankind and robots rages around them. But the teen boy is encouraged to join the fray when he uncovers the secret to bringing these brawling bots down! THR reports Wright has landed Aussie up-and-comer Callan McAuliffe to front the film as its teen protagonist. McAuliffe has appeared in a couple of American productions, including Rob Reiner's 2010 romance Flipped, DreamWorks'...

The director of 2009's lesser-known comedy-horror Tormented teams up with first time writer, Kevin Lehane to have a second crack at the genre with the likeable but mediocre Grabbers.
Super-keen Garda, Lisa (Ruth Bradley), is using her holiday allowance to venture from mainland Ireland to Erin Island and cover the sergeant’s two week break. She’s unperturbed by fellow Garda Ciaran (Richard Coyle) assuring her extra help won’t be needed, instead recognising, “It's always the quiet places where mad sh*t happens.”
Local drunk, Paddy (Lalor Roddy) stumbles across the unlikely cause of this seemingly inexplicable natural disaster when he discovers large eggs buried in the sand. Taking one home, he finds himself under attack after the egg hatches and an octopus-like creature tries to “grab” him but fails. With a specimen to study, Dr Smith is back on the scene to rule the creature is a completely foreign species,...

During the FanExpo in Toronto last weekend, the 2012 Toronto After Dark Film Festival announced the first 10 titles of the festival this October and it looks like an exciting lineup.
The festival is moving back from Toronto Underground cinema into the newly restored Bloor Hot Docs for its 7th year (where it resided for its first five years) running from October 18th to 26th, 2012. As usual the first batch of films is an eclectic mix of horror, sci-fi, action and the bizarre. So if you have been a fan of the previous year's lineup then it shouldn't disappoint.
[Rec]³: Genesis
First up is the Canadian Premiere for the third film in the Spanish [Rec] series working as a parallel sequel to the first two films. Paco Plaza returns as the director but the co-director Jaume Balagueró of the first two films will be directing the 4th [Rec] installment next year instead. This time...

If you're a sucker for U.K. horror-comedies, you just might be interested in Grabbers, an Irish indie film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year as part of the Park City at Midnight program. With a title that instantly brings to mind the early '90s cult classic Tremors, the film revolves around a group of giant, bloodsucking, tentacled aliens that turn up off the coast Erin Island and start terrorizing the inhabitants of a small fishing village. When an alcoholic cop (Richard Coyle) and his new partner (Ruth Bradley) discover that their weakness is booze, it leads to a showdown at the local watering hole. Grabbers is directed by Jon Wright, who previously helmed the film Tormented starring Alex Pettyfer. While it doesn't have quite the same pedigree as films like Attack the Block and Shaun of the Dead, it certainly seems to be going for a similar tone,...

"If we taint our blood with booze, we're poisonous to eat." Time for a little drunken Irish fun. A new trailer has arrived online for a Sundance midnight film titled Grabbers, a sci-fi comedy with weird alien creatures that invade a sleepy fishing village off the West coast of Ireland. The cast includes Richard Coyle (W.E, Prince of Persia) and Ruth Bradley (Flyboys, "Love/Hate") and lots of other boozed up local actors who all look like they had fun making this. It looks like quite a bit of low budget, wacky, alcoholic craziness, but I'm not sure the sci-fi element plays much. The song they use is "Black Keys" by The Minutes - check it out! Watch the first official trailer for Jon Wright's Grabbers, originally posted on YouTube: Directed by Irish filmmaker Jon Wright (Tormented), from a script by Kevin Lehane, Grabbers tells the story of Ciarán O'Shea,...

Can you think of a better excuse to get "pissed" than to stave off an attack by giant, squid-like alien monsters? Nah, we can't, either. That's why we love the premise of Irish director Jon Wright's (Tormented) new monster movie comedy, Grabbers: the denizens of a quiet Irish village discover that the only way to not be eaten by the invading xeno-cephalopods is to be so drunk that their blood alcohol content makes them inedible.
Sony Pictures apparently loved the premise too, because the studio picked up the rights to distribute the movie when it was still in production. To generate some excitement for the debut of Grabbers at the currently-ongoing 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Sony released a new preview clip from the movie that, unfortunately, does not include any monsters, but does serve as a decent little character study with definite "the monsters are coming" overtones.

The delectable Anna Popplewell (below) has left the land of Narnia and hasn't looked back when she boarded writer/director John Hales' 'Passengers' this past Summer. Unlike many young women whom would jaw-drop at the possibility of having unlimited wardrobe space for their shoe collection this young lady decided to hop on to the new British thriller from Ratio Films. The project, described as a 'hard-hitting psychological horror thriller', is based on a story by Hales and Carole Budgen. The British cast also consists of the sexy Sophie Colquhoun ('Captain America: The First Avenger'), Jack Derges ('Dungeons and Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness), Danny Szam, Ian Weichardt, Calvin Dean ('Tormented') and Tom Bacon. Check the plot details below....

Chronicles of Narnia star, 23 year old Anna Popplewell (represented in the UK by Sasha Leslie Management) leads the cast in Passengers, a hard-hitting pyschological thriller which was filmed in and around Birmingham in October.
Written and directed by John Hales (represented by Ed Hughes at Linda Seifert Management), Passengers is the story of a group of intoxicated lads driving to a music festival, who seriously injure a young nurse in a night time collision. They make matters far worse by trying to cover up their mistake by hastening the demise of their victim. This, they come to seriously regret as they realise the extent of their culpability and as an unseen killer proceeds to take brutal vengeance.
Jack Derges, a recent Arts Ed drama school graduate, now represented by Hamilton Hodell, stars as Jed Warner.
Calvin Dean (represented by Williamson and Holmes), who starred as Darren Mullet in Tormented, plays Rog.

Pure gold. Inside you'll find the art, with the synopsis below. "High above the earth, the first orbital hotel is about to open. this 7-star boutique resort promises the ultimate in luxury and the best views in the universe. but things take a deadly turn when an ancient contagion is brought onboard and the small band of occupants find themselves in a desperate battle for survival as a werewolf stalks the moonlit corridors. 'Steel Moon' is a claustrophobic, stylish, and visceral horror movie in the vein of 'Alien' and 'The Thing'..."
