This movie is loosely based on case of serial killer Robert Hansen, who would kidnap prostitutes in Alaska, fly them to remote forest locations, rape them, make them take off running, then hunt them down and kill them.
Diana draws several parallels with actual victims of Robert Hansen, including:
- Cindy Paulson, the only known victim to escape from Hansen's captivity;
- Sue Luna, who was stripped naked and forced to run through a forest while Hansen hunted her like a wild animal, and was ultimately shot to death;
- Paula Goulding, who was found shot in the back but with no bullet holes in her clothes, indicating that she was naked when she was killed, and redressed afterwards; and
- "Eklutna Annie", the only Hansen victim who still remains unidentified, whom Hansen claimed was either a prostitute or stripper.
Diana was also the name of the patron goddess of hunting in Roman mythology.
The first victim seen in the introductory scene appears to be around 40-50 years of age, suggesting she may based partly on Lisa Futrell, who at age 41 was the eldest known victim of Robert Hansen.
