Veteran Chinese director Peter Chan Ho-sun is busy as ever these days. Behind the scenes, Chan is laying the foundations of the new production company, Changin’ Pictures, which he formally announced towards the end of last year. In public, the director is one of the most prominent cheerleaders of Chinese cinema, a role he played at the Shanghai International Film Festival this week.
The focus of a MasterClass at the festival, Chan talked expansively about Chinese film and its place in the world. “China has a lot of great stories, and many of them can resonate with people worldwide,” he said. “So why not make these stories that everyone can empathize with? I believe we should aim to make the whole world want to watch Chinese stories. We shouldn’t make films that are intended to please them or enhance a stereotypical image of China. That won’t lead to progress.

China on Thursday announced selection of Hong Kong director Peter Chan’s sports drama “Leap” as its contender for the Academy Awards’ best international feature film competition this year.
The film tells the fact-based story of the Chinese women’s national volleyball team and their travails over the course of decades, from their world championship win in 1981 to their triumph at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Gong Li stars in the biographical drama as the legendary coach Lang Ping, who at nearly 60 remains the team’s current head coach, opposite Huang Bo.
Notably, it was produced by Hong Kong’s Jojo Hui, who also produced the youth drama “Better Days,” which was announced as Hong Kong’s Oscar contender last Friday — giving her a rare double chance at the nominee short list.

Female-led volleyball drama “Leap” hit China with an $8.2 million opening day Friday, narrowly topping the premiere-day box office haul of Disney’s “Mulan” earlier this month, according to industry tracker Maoyan.
Both films star China-born Singaporean actress Gong Li, who plays a powerful witch character in “Mulan” and the hard-driving, real-life head coach of the Chinese women’s national volleyball team Lang Ping in “Leap.” In contrast, “Mulan” brought in $8.1 million in its opening Friday performance. Warner Bros.’ “Tenet” made $8.9 million in its Sept. 4 debut. War epic “The Eight Hundred,” on the other hand, raked in $21 million in its Aug. 21 bow.
“Leap’s” debut coincided with the first weekend that cinemas were allowed to sell 75% of available tickets rather than 50%.
Directed by Hong Kong helmer Peter Ho-Sun Chan, “Leap” also opened in the U.S. on Friday. It is set for a limited release across 80 theaters in Boston, Chicago, Denver,...

Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai is among the leading filmmakers to boost the region’s movie industry with a five-tier plan that totals $33.5 million U.S. dollars in funds. He’s joined by Derek Yee (“Drink-Drank-Drunk”) and Peter Chan Ho-sun (“The Warlords”) and more who support a government-funded revival initiative in response to political unrest, as well as the Hong Kong film industry’s erosion due to coronavirus and the shuttering of theaters.
Via the Directors’ Succession Scheme with funds from the Hong Kong Film Development Fund, the directors will pair up with one or two promising filmmakers to make a movie using $1.2 million. The filmmakers will also be joined by directors Gordon Chan, Mabel Cheung, and Alex Law, with the goal of turning out between 10 and 12 projects altogether.

Creepy! Our exclusive clip from Phantom of the Theatre reminds me of Nietzsche's witticism: "If you gaze long enough into the abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." Or, perhaps more to the point, the warning in Candyman about looking into a mirror and saying his name five time. The scene features a woman staring into a mirror, and then not liking what she sees. Here's the official synopsis for the movie: A haunted theatre, filled with the vengeful spirits of a tragically-trapped performance troupe murdered in a fire 13 years ago, waits for the once-grand palatial playhouse to re-open with a new show...and bring in new victims. From director Raymond Yip (Iceman, The Warlords) the team that thrilled audiences with The House That...

Hong Kong director Peter Chan grew up as a teenager in Thailand and went to college in America, and now he is working with Beijing film producers to tell a tale of ”American Dreams in China.” It’s not a ”Hong Kong” movie at all, and it’s not really Chan’s film, since it was produced and written by Beijingers who are a bit more interested in propaganda than pure storytelling. But that’s China today, and that’s what Chan — veteran director of ”Comrades: Almost a Love Story” and ”The Warlords” — has gotten himself into. He even gets America wrong.

In the heart of Beijing, among modern homes and apartment buildings, sits an abandoned Baroque-style mansion, over a century old. No one has lived here for decades, except for ghosts - or so local legend says.
Built around 1910, the building - known as Chaonei No. 81 - had a fuzzy history until mid-century. Allegedly built by the Qing imperial family for use by the British as a church, the property at one time or another was a private residence for a French railway manager and/or a language school for foreign missionaries. In 1949, on the eve of the Communist takeover, the home was in possession of the Irish Presbyterian Mission. A Kuomintang official, in the rush of retreat, left his wife (or concubine) to fend for herself. Distraught, she hanged herself from the rafters. Since then, the place has been under the use (or disuse) of various government agencies.

Director: Peter Chan. Review: Adam Wing. "There’s more to this than meets the eye". That's what we said about Donnie Yen's Wu Xia back in 2011. U.K. audiences will get the chance to find out for themselves this month but it comes at a price. As well as the obvious name change (part and parcel these days) twenty minutes have been removed from the running time, putting less emphasis on character and more focus on action. Some people will welcome the change of emphasis, while others will detest the shift in focus. Wu Xia is a whip-smart crime drama with action undertones, Dragon however, feels faster and looser by comparison. Your level of enjoyment very much depends upon how you like your Yen delivered. In addition to choreographing the fight sequences, Donnie stars as a mild mannered paper maker who wouldn’t say boo to a goose. Unless...

After a string of period martial arts dramas, Peter Chan scores another hit with this (almost) contemporary story of three friends who meet at university and, over 20 years, build an empire around teaching English. But, while the film has proved incredibly popular in mainland China it is unlikely to repeat the same success overseas.Peter Chan is often regarded as one of Hong Kong's most respected filmmakers, although for much of the past decade he has been plying his trade on the mainland. Recent years have seen Chan unveil a string of high-profile historical action dramas, both as Director and/or Producer, which include The Warlords, Bodyguards and Assassins, Wu Xia and The Guillotines. American Dreams in China is something of a change of pace for Chan,...

With Chinese period epics still continuing to fill cinemas, it’s no surprise that old school Shaw Brothers favourites are increasingly being brought back to screens, 1975 classic “The Flying Guillotine” now reappearing as “The Guillotines”. The film was produced by Peter Chan, who recently updated the Shaws’ “Blood Brothers” as “The Warlords”, this time allowing Andrew Lau of “Infernal Affairs” fame to take the director’s seat and with a big name pan-Chinese language cast headlined by Huang Xiaoming (“Ip Man 2”), rising Taiwanese star Ethan Ruan (“Monga”), Shawn Yue (“Motorway”), pop singer Chris Li (“Bodyguards and Assassins”), Jing Boran (“The Bullet Vanishes”) and Wen Zhang (“Love is Not Blind”). The guillotines of the title are a secret brotherhood of assassins controlled by Emperor Qian Long (Wen Zhang) during the Qing Dynasty, their name also referring to the fearsome decapitation weapon they wield. First up is set to be action/thriller, No Man’s Land. The script comes from David Klass (Kiss the Girls) and Trey Ellis (Good Fences), and takes place over one night, described as having echoes of Walter Hill’s cult classic, The Warriors.
The story revolves around,
“a man who steals a powerful criminal’s diamond that soon proves to be far more valuable than initially thought. With the help of a dancer, he attempts to stay alive and cash in on the jewel.”

Not one to often rub shoulders with A-list celebrities, earlier this evening I found myself at an event celebrating the re-opening of arguably Hong Kong's finest art house cinema, the Broadway Cinematheque, when through the crowd emerged the unmistakable locks of acclaimed director Peter Chan Ho Sun. Famous for such works as Comrades: Almost A Love Story, The Warlords and, most recently, Wu Xia, Chan is one of the more interesting and visually stylish Chinese filmmakers working today, and so I pounced on the opportunity to shake his hand and ask him a couple of questions. Now while it does need to be pointed out that our conversation was an informal one, lasting just a couple of minutes, while at a party, I immediately identified...

Director: Peter Chan. Review: Adam Wing. The greatest action star in the world is back, so lets answer the most important question first. Somewhat surprisingly, he doesn’t take his shirt off once. Unbelievable I know. Donnie Yen is back in business and doing what he does best, kicking the crap out of anyone that gets in his way, and he’s doing it fully clothed. Don’t expect another stereotypical action movie though, because there’s more to Wu Xia than meets the eye. In addition to choreographing the action, Donnie stars as a mild mannered paper maker who wouldn’t say boo to goose. Unless the goose tried to pick a fight of course, then all bets are off. There’s a joke about the goose and a need for speed there somewhere but we’ll let it go for now. Donnie’s biggest threat comes from Kaneshiro...

“Wu Xia” or “Swordsmen” is an alluring prospect. It features two of China’s current greats: Donnie Yen (who was a spear-wielding demon in “Hero”) & Takeshi Kaneshiro (whose archery prowess kept the beautiful Zhang Ziyi safe in “House Of Flying Daggers”). There’s also a lot of firepower behind the camera thanks to Peter Chan, director of 2005′s “Perhaps Love” and 2007′s “The Warlords”. He also recently produced Teddy Chen’s “Bodyguards and Assassins”. All that being said, does it live up to expectations?
Donnie Yen is Liu Jinxi. He and his family are living an idyllic life in a sky blue and lush green countryside. He’s the operator of a paper mill but he’s, in fact, much more than that. So when two deadbeat criminals try to rob said paper mill, it’s too much to bear for our paper-maker. He fights them off, they drop dead.

The Chinese film industry is 'opening up', but how genuine it is about co-operation with Us studios remains to be seen
Here's a business-lounge scary story. In 1994, Warner Bros was feeling very pleased with itself. It had just finalised a joint venture with the Chinese government to bring the splendours of multiplex cinema to the country. And the terms were good: a 70/30 profit split in favour of the Americans. Building began, but several months later, strange tidings arrived at Warner HQ. The arrangement had been reviewed: still favouring Warner, but now to the tune of 51/49. There was confusion and disbelief in California, but work continued. The eighth cinema was ready when the inevitable happened: the Chinese authorities decided that foreign companies could not own cinemas. The split was arbitrarily reversed 49/51, leaving Beijing with its hands on the curtain cords of several million dollars' worth of chipper new multiplexes.

Most people first heard about Andrew Lau when Martin Scorsese remade his Infernal Affairs as The Departed, which nabbed Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. While those same people may not hear about him anymore, he’s still getting behind the camera, most recently directing Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. His latest project has even commenced production, with THR telling us about the film.

Well Go USA & Variance Films has released a movie trailer for Kung Fu movie Shaolin, starring Andy Lau (House of Flying Daggers, Warlords), Nicholas Tse (The Promise, Bodyguards & Assassins), and Jackie Chan (The Forbidden Kingdom,The Spy Next Door, The Karate Kid).
Along with the trailer there is the poster and synopsis for the film.
By caring for the wounded and protecting the weak and poor, the Monks of the Shaolin Temple have to calm the chaos caused by rival warlords who battle to increase the extent of their power in Shaolin, in particular General Hou (Lau) whose brutality is so blind that it is often unleashed on innocent civilians instead of just soldiers. Hao has to seek assylum at the monks’ temple, hidden in the mountains, when another general, Cao Man (Tse) double-crosses him, and there he begins to understand peace while the practice of Martial Zen dispels his hatred.

The trailer for martial arts epic Wu Xia (also referred to as Swordsmen) has shown up online, and with English subtitles to boot. The preview gives off the kind of action and scope that you would hope to see in this kind of film, while also hinting at an emotional core. Plus, it has people getting punched through walls. You can’t have a good martial arts movie without that.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Film Socialisme Trailer We all can point to examples of those in this industry who have lost their edge, their hunger, their passion to make a good film.

I love most martial arts movies, but there are a few in particular that stand out above others, like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which premiered in Cannes in 2000), and Wu Xia is one of those exceptional films. Now I know why Cannes chose to feature it. Wu Xia (being titled either Swordsmen and/or Dragon in English) is the latest film from Chinese director Peter Ho-Sun Chan, also of The Warlords a few years ago, and it's awesome. While it does have a few fantastic fight scenes, he never sacrifices story for spectacle, which pays off as it's a film that I enjoyed from start to finish and will definitely be revisiting in the future. The easiest - and honestly best - way to describe Wu Xia would be to say it's A History of Violence but set in early 1900s China, about a paper maker named Liu Jinxi (played...

Photo: The Weinstein Co. One day after the Weinstein Co. acquired North American distribution and remake rights to Peter Ho-sun Chan's Wu Xia (Dragon), the Out of Competition title screened at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Playing as a 1917-set, martial arts version of David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, Wu Xia boasts a fascinating story and some excellent action scenes, choreographed and featuring Donnie Yen. There are moments when it plays a little too long leaving for a few dead spots throughout, though this does make you cherish the action scenes that much more when they arrive.
Set during the late Qing Dynasty, Wu Xia opens as a pair of thieves attempt to rob a general store in a small village. Their robbery is, however, foiled by an act of bravery by Jinxi (Yen), a local papermaker, father of two and husband...

Cannes is in full swing at TWC has announced in a press release that they’ve acquired Wu Xia, the new film by Donnie Yen, and in typical Weinstein fashion, they’re retitling the film to Dragon. Ugh. Chinese director Peter Chan (The Warlords) has created a pretty awesome looking new martial arts film called Wu Xia, which is a re-imagining of the classic film The One Armed Swordsman. The movie is set premiere in the out of competition midnight lineup at the Cannes Film Festival, and it stars Donnie Yen (IP Man 1 &2)and Takeshi Kaneshiro (House of Flying Dragons, Red Cliff). This film looks like it will be fantastically fun movie to watch. I can't wait to see more!
