If you've been watching the rather superb marketing for Suicide Squad and wondered what it would be like if you stripped away the star power, ditched the talented director, and tweaked just enough to avoid legal repercussions, look no further! The Asylum, the studio responsible for such "mockbusters" as Transmorphers, The Da Vinci Treasure, and Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies, is back... Read More...

Paranormal Entity. Snakes on a Train. The Da Vinci Treasure. These are some of the more notable movies that have come from the dubious production company Global Asylum. As you can gather from their titles, Asylum is a maker of mockbusters, low-budget straight-to-dvd features that essentially piggyback off the fandemonium surrounded movies like Paranormal Activity, Snakes on a Plane or The Da Vinci Code. The Asylum is chief among these rip-off moviemakers, but when they tried to ride the coat tails of Warner Bros.' The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with the intended release of Age of the Hobbits they got shot down. Deadline reports Warner Bros., along with New Line Cinema, MGM and producer Saul Zaentz, have succeeded in winning their case to get a temporary restraining order against the mockbuster, pleading to federal judge Philip Gutierrez that Asylum purposely chose the same release week for their straight-to-dvd release...

Yes, we realize the seeming contradiction of a movie studio 'getting serious' by making a movie with a Twitter hashtag for a title, but when it comes to The Asylum, it's true. The studio does make the honest effort every now and then to get involved with movies that can stand on their own two feet (they distributed the cool and underloved 100 Feet), but they're best known as the outfit that churns out mockbuster knockoffs like The Da Vinci Treasure, Transmorphers, and, most recently, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies. It seems like they want to break from that reputation, though, as Variety reports they've just set their first ever theatrical release date. The movie in question is called #Holdyourbreath and it stars Tucker and Dale vs Evil cutie Katrina Bowden and...

Terrence Malick and Lars Von Trier might take all the acclaim, but it's not all quality on the Marché du Film
While the beautiful people of Cannes take to the red carpet for new masterpieces from the likes of Terrence Malick, Lars von Trier and Lynne Ramsay, a subterranean realm of more unusual cinematic offerings is lurking just below their feet. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the Marché du Film, the world's biggest movie market. Here are eight particularly special selections to whet your appetite …
Snowmageddon
Set in the small suburban town of Normal, Alaska (see what they've done there?), Snowmageddon sees the all-American Miller family receive a peculiar Christmas gift from "a mysterious man in a mysterious van". To the untrained eye it's nothing more than an ordinary snow globe, but what the family don't know is that What Happens In The Globe Happens In Real Life,...

The God of Thunder had quite a busy weekend. Last Friday, he showed up in multiplexes around the country, courtesy of Marvel/Paramount's blockbuster Thor. Then on Saturday night, thanks to those lunatics running The Asylum, he materialized on television in a made-for-Syfy mockbuster called Almighty Thor.
If nothing else, this weekend proved there definitely is a Thor for every budget — Marvel's version cost about $150 million, and I'm willing to bet The Asylum made their film for an amount equal to the catering costs on Marvel's flick. Actually, what these two films really prove is that you get what you pay for.
Let's play contrast and compare. Marvel's film is filled with fine award-winning actors; is loaded with jaw-dropping special effects; and was directed by Kenneth Branagh, noted interpreter of Shakespeare. Almighty Thor...

In case you got confused and thought this was the Guy Ritchie movie, it isn’t. This is the Sherlock Holmes movie with dinosaurs!. And robots. And steampunk battle armor. And sea monsters. And girls with guns. Well, that other Sherlock Holmes had girls with guns, too. Gee, but it’s kinda funny how Asylum Entertainment’s films often somehow seem to get mistaken for other movies. Like Alien vs Hunter, starring William Katt, which totally isn’t Alien vs. Predator. Or The Da Vinci Treasure, starring C. Thomas Howell, which -- hello! -- is absolutely not The Da Vinci Code. I mean, duh! Or I Am Omega, starring Mark Dacascos, which is soooo not I Am Legend that it’s not even funny. Why would people keep making such mistakes? No one, on the other hand, mistakes Asylum’s Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus for anything other than what it is.

Have you ever seen one of these Asylum movies? The company specializes in bad rip-offs of major motion pictures and releases videos with very similar names on DVD either ten days or three days before the actual movie arrives in theaters.
In the past few years, these street corner Rolexes have included Transmorphers, Snakes on a Train, The Da Vinci Treasure, Pirates of Treasure Island, Allan Quartermain and the Temple of Skulls, the brand new Sunday School Musical, and oddly, The 9/11 Commission Report.
The company's latest epic is The Day the Earth Stopped, and I probably don't need to tell you what upcoming release it's modeled after. Ordinarily, we don't focus on Asylum films - and why would we? - but they must smell gold here, because they've cast Judd Nelson (!) and C. Thomas Howell (!), who also directs this surefire masterpiece (!!)
At what point during the production do you think...
