The Perfect Couple shot to the top overall spot in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for its premiere week.
The murder mystery limited series, which stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, accumulated 1.91 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 2-8 (it premiered on Sept. 5). That’s the fifth highest total for any original series premiere week on the streaming charts this year, behind Fool Me Once (3.04 billion minutes), Fallout (2.9 billion), Bridgerton (2.76 billion) and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (2.56 billion).
The Perfect Couple was one of five titles to record more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week. The others are Netflix’s movie Rebel Ridge (1.11 billion), Family Guy (1.06 billion), Prison Break (1.05 billion) — which had been the overall No. 1 for the previous four weeks — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (1.02 billion), which was even with its season two premiere a week earlier.

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened to big viewing numbers in the United States — just not as big as its first season.
The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Season two premiered on Aug. 29 with three episodes, and Nielsen says about 70 percent of the show’s weekly total was for those three, with the remainder devoted to season one. (Viewing totals on the ratings service’s charts cover all episodes of a series.)
The 1.02 billion minutes is down about 19 percent from season one’s opening week (1.25 billion) in August 2022. The Rings of Power ranks third among Prime Video series U.S. opening weeks this year behind Fallout (2.9 billion minutes) and The Boys (1.19 billion...

Crime television series have been earning a lot of viewer attention lately, with decades-old shows still being hailed as some of the best ones to date. While there are other star-studded names on the list as well, Benedict Cumberbatch’s all-time best performance as the fan-favorite Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s critically and generally commended Sherlock continues to be regarded among the best crime series.
The ultimate fan-favorite crime TV show, Sherlock. | Credits: BBC.
And yet, that’s the mere beginning of the list. Even though fans are still madly in love with the mysteriously immersive element of this respective show, multiple other additions to the genre are putting up tough competition to the British mystery crime saga established by Cumberbatch. If anything, the 7 crime TV shows mentioned in this list might as well be considered as good as Sherlock, if not better.

Paramount+’s communication team has been hit by Paramount Global’s latest round of layoffs as part of its 15% reduction of its U.S. workforce. Senior vice presidents Morgan Seal and Amanda Cary are among those impacted, TheWrap has learned.
During Seal’s 13-year tenure, she helped lead publicity for the streamer’s Taylor Sheridan and Star Trek universe shows. She joined CBS Interactive’s comms team in 2011 before transitioning to the Paramount+ team in 2019.
Cary joined Showtime in 2013 and was promoted to SVP in 2022. There, she worked on publicity for series such as “Dexter” and “Yellowjackets,” before moving to Paramount+ last year. Prior to working with Showtime, she spent five years at USA Network, helping to launch series that included blue-sky classics “Suits” and “Covert Affairs.”

Updated with more info: We had been hearing for weeks that Paramount+, which was spared in the first wave of Paramount Global’s ongoing layoffs last month, would take the brunt of cuts in the second round. That has been happening today, with entire departments eliminated as Paramount+ faces an uncertain future ahead of Paramount Global’s acquisition by Skydance.
One of the units that essentially is being dissolved is Paramount+’s communications operation, with SVPs Morgan Seal, Amanda Cary and Deva Kehoe among those impacted. The move was foreshadowed last week by the departure of Erin Calhoun, who oversaw the department as EVP, Head of Communications, Paramount Streaming & Showtime and Cross-Company Publicity. Seal, Cary and Kehoe all reported to her.
The functions under Calhoun — publicity, photo, events, awards, talent relations, etc. — are being eliminated at Paramount+ and will be handled by the studios supplying the streamer, including CBS Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios,...

Hall is returning to lend his voiceover to the series.
Sarah Kinsey will also be playing a familiar face to “Dexter” fans, as she’ll be taking over as Camilla Figg, Miami Metro’s file clerk, and one of Harry Morgan’s closest confidantes. Figg was played by Margo Martindale in the original series.

AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

In a clear sign of the times, more competitors have been licensing content to Netflix in the past year or so, including Showtime, which handed Your Honor and Dexter over this summer.
Netflix’s latest edition of What We’re Watching, which pulls back the curtain on viewership for all of its titles every six months, gives an early indication about how those shows have been performing since they landed on the service in June.
The two seasons of Your Honor tallied 16.1M views in just under a month on the service, after arriving on May 31. Season 1 put up 10M of those views, landing it at No. 142 among Netflix’s thousands of titles.
That’s a strong start for the series, performing better in one month than many of the HBO titles that the streamer previously acquired did in six months. This report only encompasses viewership data from January to June,...

Netflix’s original shows and movies typically dominate the streamer’s most-viewed content rankings. But it still serves up hundreds of millions of hours of content licensed from third parties, as shown by Netflix’s massive data dump for viewing covering the first half of 2024.
Not surprisingly, kids content continues to fare well — extremely well. No. 1 on the TV side is perennial preschool favorite “CoComelon,” from Moonbug Entertainment, which pulled in 124.5 million views in aggregate. And that doesn’t include the two seasons of “CoComelon Lane” (34.4 million), which is a Netflix original produced by Moonbug. In addition, Moonbug’s “Little Angel” series garnered 52.4 million views over its five volumes.
Following “CoComelon” was another children’s TV staple: British animated show “Peppa Pig,” with 117.4 million views over six seasons. “Young Sheldon,” the spinoff the “The Big Bang Theory” that just ended its run on CBS last spring, came in strong with...

Exclusive: Harlan Coben and Nicola Shindler have flagged a “shared vision” and “hybrid British-American sensibilities” as leading to the success of Fool Me Once, Netflix’s most-watched show in the first half of this year.
The showrunner-producer pair chatted to Deadline in advance of the latest data dump, which saw their fourth Netflix UK Coben adaptation top the charts with more than 100 million views in the first half of this year. And it’s been a good day for the Brits, with Bridgerton, Baby Reindeer and The Gentlemen backing up Fool Me Once in the top four and One Day also making the top 10. Ted Sarandos was in London earlier this week trumpeting the Brits’ success.
With the show having launched nearly a year ago, Coben cited a “shared vision” between himself, Shindler, writer Danny Brocklehurst, producer Richard Fee and Netflix as contributing to its runaway success.

Working as a forensic technician in Miami by day, Morgan lives a double life as a serial killer, hunting down those he thinks have gotten away with their crimes. The 2000s had a bunch of television shows that captivated the hearts of millions of silver screen enthusiasts around the world. Dexter was one show that had people glued to their television sets back in the day. Released on October 1, 2006, just in time to set the tone for Halloween that year, Dexter had a lengthy run until airing its final episode on September 22, 2013.

The final season of the pilot series had Dexter Morgan (played by Michael C. Hall) fake his death in a hurricane to escape the growing suspicion of him being a serial killer. The character then escapes to a nearby town from Miami, picking up a new identity to hide from the law. This inspired a follow-up series called Dexter: New Blood (2021).
However, Paramount and Showtime are coming together to produce a new series that will reflect Dexter’s upbringing.

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.
The dramedy starring Lily Collins gathered 792 million minutes of viewing in the United States for its premiere week, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. That was good for third place among original series and ninth overall, but was also down 43 percent from the 1.39 billion minutes for the first week of season three’s release — which featured all 10 episodes of that installment, as opposed to five this time out.
The previous week’s top two shows, Prison Break and The Umbrella Academy, held their spots for the week of Aug. 12-18 — and their numbers were consistent as well. Prison Break actually ticked up a little to 1.61 billion minutes of viewing (versus 1.6 billion the week before), while The Umbrella Academy (1.39 billion) was...

Dexter fans, get ready! The bloody origin story of the infamous serial killer is coming our way in just matter of months. Paramount+ has shared the release date of prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. And honestly, it's actually closer than I initially thought it would be.
Dexter: Original Sin premieres Friday, Dec. 13, 2024 on Paramount+. If you'd rather skip the streaming option and watch on television instead, then you can tune in Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024 on Showtime. A linear premiere time has not been shared at this time. Though Showtime should share that closer to the release date.

Paramount+ also shared a teaser, which is the first video look into the crime drama. We've only gotten the first-look images so far. We've known that Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey joined the cast, but we haven't seen his look up until now. There's a glimpse of his character in the clip.

When it originally premiered, there was nothing else like Dexter on TV.
Our volatile relationships with antiheroes were suddenly under a microscope, as Dexter analyzed blood spatter at crime scenes while setting up his next victim — those he believed weren’t meted the appropriate dose of justice.
Dexter Morgan was a serial killer, Robin Hood, doing the work law enforcement failed to do.
(Patrick Wymore/Paramount+ with Showtime)
Although Dexter finished its award-winning eight-season run in 2013, the man, the myth, and the legend live on.
He was first revisited with a Showtime original series, Dexter: New Blood, in 2021. If the original series ending didn’t satisfy, Dexter: New Blood proved equally as divisive. Yet, still, we tune in.

Is a “Dexter” prequel series what TV really needs right now? Debate on that will rage on, but that’s what Showtime and Paramount+ will supply subscribers to close out their 2024 programming. Set in the early ’90s, “Dexter: Original Sin” follows TV’s favorite fictional serial killer as a young man learning how to operate in the Code his father Harry made for him.

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up, but apparently didn’t. Dexter: Original Sin went into production a few months ago, and now a first look trailer has arrived online, along with a premiere date that’s much sooner than I was expecting. The trailer can be seen in the embed above, and the premiere date is December 13th on the Paramount+ streaming service, with the Showtime premiere to follow on December 15th.

The Orville is one of the most perfect complimentary shows for Star Trek fans. Originally envisioned as a comedic take on Star Trek, the show slowly evolved into a Star Trek clone, resembling a series from the 1990s. Just with some humor in it. The series has been around since 2017 but hasn't had a new season since 2022 and fans have only gotten three seasons across those seven years.
A potential fourth season remains a significant possibility, and one we're all hoping for. Yet, with the departure of Adrianne Palicki following season three, it seems like The Orville is set for a brand new era should it return. Citing the slow-shooting pace of the series, and the way that affects her and her coworker's ability to get other jobs, Palicki opted to leave the show.
She wouldn't be the first original crew member to leave, with Halston Sage leaving during season two.

In Alex Gibney’s new documentary about the making of The Sopranos, series regular Michael Imperioli offers an interesting explanation for what made the show so different from anything that had come before it.
“Television, in the past, was always about making you feel good,” Imperioli explained.
He added that Sopranos creator David Chase was “all about the opposite” in his own approach to televisual storytelling.

You may be thinking to yourself, Hey, I don’t go in for the feel-good stuff! I like gritty cop dramas like Law & Order: Svu. Nothing wholesome about that!

We hate to see them go. Blue Bloods’ looming departure on CBS this December after 14 hit seasons will leave millions of faithful fans with not only a hole in their hearts but also in their Friday night TV schedule. The seeds of the family-first cop drama were planted when The Sopranos writers Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green decided to deviate from the late-2000s trend of shows with dark antiheroes. “We wanted to go for the positive, the heroic,” Green noted in 2010, when Blue Bloods premiered. Joining with veteran network exec and producer Leonard Goldberg (Starsky & Hutch), they found their heroes in the fictional Reagans, a tight-knit, multigenerational Irish Catholic clan of NYPD cops and an assistant district attorney who investigate and prosecute crimes, rather than commit them. The police procedural planned to have action-packed, edge-of-your-seat moments but would really home in on the family drama and interwoven relationships. CBS...

Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar find themselves back in the 90s for the new prequel series of Showtime’s hit serial killer show Dexter. Entertainment Weekly has now unveiled exclusive images from the upcoming follow-up. Here, you can see Dempsey’s new look as Captain Aaron Spencer, head of the Miami Metro Police Department’s homicide division. You also get a peek at Gellar’s look as Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief. Both characters are Dexter’s new bosses when he begins a forensics internship at Miami Metro Pd.
Gellar humorously reflects, “It’s funny — I think it’s a different ’90s than what I knew because I was like, ‘I don’t remember this hairstyle.’ But I played a teenager in the ’90s, not an adult in a business environment, so maybe that is how people dressed in the ’90s. Maybe that is how they wore their hair.

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.
The Umbrella Academy was the only original title to make the overall top 10; none did in the previous week, the...

On Sept. 1, Netflix shared some good news with its subscriber base. It announced that the first season of the popular Showtime horror-thriller series Yellowjackets would be coming to the streaming platform in October. We definitely didn't see this coming, but we couldn't be more excited. Yellowjackets season 1 is slated to land on Netflix on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024.
Recently, we've seen the release of several Showtime series on Netflix. For example, the streamer added the anthology drama series Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, the drama miniseries Patrick Melrose and the legal drama series Your Honor to its platform in May 2024. Then, in June, we saw the addition of all eight seasons of the hit crime drama series Dexter on Netflix. So, it's not totally surprising that the streaming giant decided to acquire the streaming rights to yet another Showtime series.

Following weeks of rumors, the Friday, August 30 episode saw what is likely the end of the road for actor Adam J. Harrington on ABC’s “General Hospital” after his character, John “Jagger” Cates, was killed off.
During a face-off with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), John confronts the mobster, telling him he should turn himself in by confessing to his crimes. Unfortunately for the FBI agent, Sonny had the upper hand, informing John that he made a mistake by going after his family, something the coffee importer/exporter had warned him about previously. In the end, Sonny shoots two bullets into John as the rain pours down over them.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) after his final episode aired, Harrington seemingly addressed his exit, captioning the post, “Good night all……” The post was accompanied by a photograph of a sunset. Separately, in a post on his Instagram story timeline,...

The Netflix original film “The Union” was the third-most-streamed title of the Aug. 12-18 viewing window, per Nielsen — a feat, as movies are disadvantaged on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, having shorter running times than the TV series they’re up against.
With 1.3 billion minutes watched, the Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg-led film came only behind “Prison Break” (1.6 billion minutes watched) and “The Umbrella Academy” (1.4 billion), which were also the previous week’s top two titles. The former was recently added to Netflix after concluding its run on Fox in 2018, though it was already available on Hulu, and the latter having just dropped its fourth and final season on Netflix.
In fourth place, up from seventh place the week before, was “Fire Country.” The CBS drama was streamed for 1.2 billion minutes across Paramount+, where it has been available since its debut, and Netflix, where it was recently added.
