On paper, The Commune sounds like a potentially great idea. Director Thomas Vinterberg’s career can charitably be described as erratic—anyone still dimly recall It’s All About Love, a sci-fi romance starring Joaquin Phoenix, Claire Danes, and Sean Penn?—but his one undisputed triumph, 1998’s The Celebration, deftly orchestrated chaos within a large ensemble cast. Communal living ought to be right up his alley. What’s more, it turns out that Vinterberg actually grew up in a Danish commune and based the screenplay (co-written with Tobias Lindholm, one of the creators of Borgen), at least in part, on his own childhood memories. So it’s doubly bizarre that The Commune all but ignores its ostensible subject. Rather than portray a turbulent group dynamic, the film focuses on the marital woes of one particular couple, squandering its novel milieu on a banal conflict that would play out similarly ...

Thomas Vinterberg went through a bit of a dry patch following “The Celebration,” with a string of movies (“It’s All About Love,” “Dear Wendy,” “Submarino“) that missed the mark. But now he’s back on form, chilling everyone with “The Hunt,” going the period drama route with the underrated “Far From The Madding Crowd,” and now bringing “The Commune” to art houses everywhere.

Sistine Stallone has had two major moments in black this week: one in a sheer, long-sleeve gown as Miss Golden Globes on Sunday – and now one in quite a bit less as the latest edition to the Love advent calendar.
The 18-year-old daughter of Rocky star Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin is the latest of Love magazine’s lingerie-clad advent calendar girls (albeit a post-holiday addition), posing and strutting in black, lacy unmentionables for a new video.
Like Gigi Hadid and Kim Kardashian West before her, Stallone dares to bare in a psychedelic clip, this time set to The Runaways’ 1976 rock anthem,...

The film-maker on how growing up in a commune informed his new movie and his mixed feelings about the EU
Thomas Vinterberg is the Danish film director who, with Lars von Trier, co-founded Dogme 95, a movement that aimed to “purify” film-making by, among other things, minimising the use of special effects. In 1998, he wrote and directed the first Dogme film, Festen (The Celebration), which won numerous awards. However, his 2003 film, It’s All About Love, starring Claire Danes and Joaquin Phoenix, was a famous flop, and his reputation did not fully recover until the Oscar-nominated The Hunt (2012), about a man wrongly accused of child abuse. His new film is Kollektivet (The Commune), set in Copenhagen in the early 70s. It stars Ulrich Thomsen as Erik and Trine Dyrholm as Anna, a middle-class couple who set up a commune, with disastrous consequences for their marriage.
To what extent was your new film inspired by your childhood?...

Revered Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg has been recruited to helm upcoming submarine thriller Kursk for Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp, according to Deadline.
Based on Robert Moore’s acclaimed book A Time To Die: The Kursk Disaster, Vinterberg’s next creative venture will send the director back to the year 2000, where the titular Russian sub sank to the depths of the Barents Sea after a disastrous explosion. In Moore’s insightful account of the tragic accident, the decorated journalist traces the disaster back to a dummy warhead that exploded, killing over 100 crew members and leaving only 23 alive. From what we understand, Vinterberg’s adaptation will double down on the survival tale of those survivors.
Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot) is working on adapting Moore’s non-fiction book to the big screen, with the next step in the creative process involving sending the feelers out for potential cast members. Deadline...

It’s All About Love: Vinterberg Revamps Hardy’s Classic Romance
Inevitably, we would have seen some filmmaker tackle a revamp of Thomas Hardy’s classic 1874 novel Far From the Madding Crowd, so it’s mostly surprising to note that it wasn’t Michael Winterbottom, who has made several Hardy adaptations since the 1990s. Instead, Danish director Thomas Vinterberg takes the reins from director John Schlesinger, who previously held credit for a famous 1967 adaptation starring Julie Christie, with Terence Stamp, Peter Finch and Alan Bates as the trio of suitors (and let’s not forget to mention a modern reimagining of this novel, the comic strip serial Tamara Drewe, made into a film by Stephen Frears in 2010). Curiously, this is Vinterberg’s follow-up to his 2012 critically acclaimed title The Hunt, which won Mads Mikkelsen Best Actor at Cannes and received an Oscar nod for Best Foreign Language Film, making...

Sometimes in the film buz you get a second chance to make a great second impression. It took one critically-lauded, unexpected (it was the surprise inclusion at the Cannes film festival in 2012) hit in the award-winning (Best Actor for Mads Mikkelsen) The Hunt to put Thomas Vinterberg on the right side of the tracks again. 98′s The Celebration was all the talk and his follow up critically bashed projects such as It’s All About Love and Dear Wendy took the helmer out of circulation. Now Fox Searchlight Pictures announced that Vinterberg has begun shooting on the U.K shot Far From the Madding Crowd which sees Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge and one of the busiest actresses in Juno Temple make up the crowd. The film will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London. DNA Films’ Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald are producing. Look...

Despite sharing four walls with a serial killer, Jamie Batista has remained blissfully unaware of her boss' homicidal tendencies ... but according to star Aimee Garcia that could all change as Dexter rockets towards the September 22 series finale.
That was one of the bombs she dropped (or, rather, hinted at) during our chat earlier this week!
ETonline: What's been your take on Jamie's role in this final season?
Aimee Garcia: I think Jamie serves as a litmus test for how far people have gone in connection with Dexter. In season one, everyone was at their starting points, but as the series progressed, everyone from Doakes to Laguerta to Quinn have had their suspicions and eventually saw Dexter in a different light. Jamie is still in the filter of first season. She sees Dexter how everyone saw him in season one, so she serves as a way to measure how far people have gone in relationship to [link...

Danny Pang, still best known as one half of the brotherly directorial duo responsible for the 2002 hit “The Eye”, takes another shot at recapturing his past form with “Fairy Tale Killer”, which as its title suggests follows the police hunt for a murderer who bases his methods around children’s fables. As with any Pang production, the film is a glossy affair with slick visuals, and this time has a couple of big headlining stars in Lau Ching Wan (“Life Without Principle”) and Wang Baoqiang (“Mr. Tree”), with support from the likes of Elanne Kwong (“Love Lifting”), Elena Kong (“A Simple Life”), Joey Meng (“All About Love”), and ultra prolific Hong Kong character actor Lam Suet (“The Great Magician”). The film opens with a strange, stammering young man with white face makeup called Ng (Wang Baoqiang) turning up at the police station of Inspector Wong (Lau Ching Wan) and confessing to a murder.

After making big waves with his Dogme classic The Celebration in 1998, Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg has made a handful of flawed and underseen films, whether the genre be post-apocalyptic sci-fi (It’s All About Love) or a pseudo-Western about a group of gun-wielding pacifists (Dear Wendy), that have rendered him largely unnoticed as of late.
Let it be said that his newest work, The Hunt, will stand to change the tide. Starring Mads Mikkelsen in a decidedly, and impressively, domesticated role. Vinterberg takes his time with his narrative, looking into a very 21st century kind of witch hunt. Lucas (Mikkelsen) is a new teacher at a local kindergarten, recently divorced and at odds with his ex-wife over custody of their teenage son. He’s an engaged educator, interacting with the young children and developing close relationships with all of them.

It’s been a long time since we saw this Dane at the Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition capacity. Thomas Vinterberg ‘s second feature film Festen (The Celebration) in 1998 claimed the Jury Prize which he parlayed into a career of experimental-type English language films It’s All About Love and Dear Wendy, and then homegrown titles A Man Comes Home and Submarino followed with less festival plays making it somewhat of a surprise that the filmmaker is in this year’s Main Competition. The Hunt stars Mads Mikkelsen in the lead and of course, the very unique Thomas Bo Larsen plays the supporting role in what is essentially a drama about the rumor mill, how it spreads and how it destroys lives. So far, we’ve drawn a “love it” or “hate it” type reaction, as we’ve got something of a rarity, with scores from zero to five stars.

Eva Longoria may have just split from boyfriend Eduardo Cruz, but that didn't keep her from enjoying a night with pals who came out to honor the Desperate Housewives starlet as she turned 37. "She had a little celebratory birthday dinner," a source tells People of Longoria's intimate, seven-person event Tuesday evening at Cut restaurant in Beverly Hills, that included Bff Mario Lopez and his fiancée Courtney Mazza, along with Kevin Connolly. "She had a great time and was really enjoying herself." The next night, she made her way to West Hollywood hotspot Chateau Marmont, where she hung out on...

One of a select few successful female directors working in the notorious Boys Club that is the Hong Kong Film Industry, Ann Hui has been on a good run of late. She managed to get Chow Yun Fat to star in a Hong Kong film again with The Postmodern Life Of My Aunt, followed that up with the awards darling The Way We Are and the brutal domestic drama Night & Fog. Her last film was the lesbian romantic comedy All About Love, which opened last year's Hong Kong Summer International Film Festival and now A Simple Life will play in competition at the 68th Venice International Film Festival later this month.Always focused on poignant social issues, Hui this time trains her eye on the...

Crazy Stupid Love is one of the best romantic comedies I have seen in a long time with the added bonus of Ryan Gosling shirtless! Need I say more?
I don’t know if I can truly express my love for this movie in five reasons, but I am going to give it my best shot!
You will leave the theater with a six pack from laughing so hard! The humor is so witty and constant throughout that it really does carry the story. Steve Carell uses his typical dry behavior, combining it with his clueless attitude from The Office to make the perfect middle aged man going through a serious mid-life crises. If you are a hopeless romantic like me than this is the movie for you, because this story is All about love! The young son loves his babysitter. The babysitter loves the boy’s father (Steve). Emma Stone loves her lame boyfriend,...

The Sydney Film Festival brings the best new films from around the world right to the audiences of Sydney. It runs from 8-19th of June and is one of Sydney's biggest annual events.Ann Hui's bubbly romantic comedy follows bisexual Macy (Sandra Ng) a free-spirited lawyer who reconnects with her ex Anita (Vivian Chow). Both of them are accidentally pregnant from incidental affairs. The rekindling of their romance is complicated by their different ideas about proceeding with their pregnancies. All About Love starts mysteriously enough; Anita confidently strolls through town, like an old movie she sits on a bench with an unlit cigarette and men's hands come out of nowhere, each with a lighter for her. There is a very European feel to this initial journey...

Acclaimed Hong Kong director and industry veteran Ann Hui returns with “All About Love”, a film considerably lighter in tone than her last outing, the depressing, Tin Shui Wai-set “Night and Fog”. Needless to say, although the film’s premise does suggest light romantic comedy, with a script by author and screenwriter Yang Yee Shan (responsible for the hard hitting “Whispers and Moans” and “True Women for Sale”), it also tackles a number of serious societal concerns. The film is headlined by a couple of top acting talents in Sandra Ng (currently enjoying a career renaissance thanks to the likes of “Echoes of the Rainbow”) and 1990s pop star Vivian Chow (making her first film appearance for 14 years), with support from Eddie Cheung (“Election”) and William Chan (“Beauty on Duty!”). The film revolves around two urbanite lesbians and former lovers, Macy (Sandra Ng) and Anita (Vivian Chow), who meet again...

0949 All About Love (Ann Hui, Hong Kong /China)
The second strong film from this Hong Kong new wave filmmaker this year, after Rotterdam’s Night and Fog, proves that even if I lost track of Hui after her first couple films, her contemporary work is of supreme craftsmanship and expressive control of drama and mise-en-scène. This film really purrs in its first half, where Hui calls up the social message melodrama of Night and Fog for a lesbian romance as packed with didactic basic human equality messages as it is sharp, clear-eyed drama. With considerable agility the film follows two old flames (Sandra Ng and Vivian Chow) who bump into each other at a single-mothers pregnancy meeting and re-kindle their past relationship. Hui follows them as they trek up and down Hong Kong’s hills at night, not quite willing to follow one or the other into one of their apartments for the night,...

Reviewed at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.
You wouldn't be wrong to think "All About Love" feels a bit like how American films dealt with gay subject matter in the 1980s - with caution and reserve, indulging in soft focus and the occasional swell of a sappy love song in the background. But it should be remembered, of all the good ones at least, that they were building towards bigger breakthroughs with deceptively simple stories that served to lift gay characters to the level of straight ones in like-minded films.
This isn't to say that one should grade Ann Hui's romantic comedy on a curve, since it's a well-told story that stands on its own. But it's important to note Hui's struggle to film it without censorship in her home country of China, where it will be banned from ever playing in public since the suggestion of two women falling in love is too bold,...

Wow, that's a lot of flicks. Everything from Peter Mullan's Neds to Benedek Fliegauf's Womb (that's right, it's a trailer!) to more Greek weirdness in Athena Tsangari's Attenberg. I wish I was going.
It's late so I'm not writing much of a post here.. Maybe I'll update tomorrow.
Full list after the break via Variety.

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. I was wondering why Peter Mullan's Neds wasn't included in Venice. I was wondering why the Midnight Madness section didn't name Koen Mortier's latest. I was wondering why Cannes regular Bent Hamer wasn't in Cannes. Tiff's Cwc section has all three high profile items, plus Venice Film Festival's Meek's Cutoff (Kelly Reichard) and Three (Tom Tykwer). Reichard will participate in Kelly Reichardt in a Mavericks discussion about the behind the scenes of her process. Here is the entire line-up: 22nd of May Koen Mortier, Belgium World Premiere The director of Ex-Drummer returns with an artful meditation on political violence. The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:
