In her 30 years at the Atelier Advertising agency, Monica (Lauren Graham) has climbed the ladder of success. As we meet her, she’s CEO, she’s winning industry awards and she’s working on a commercial for Boppin’ Burgers to run during the Super Bowl. She’s even throwing a party at the office for the launch of a new campaign for Vibezz headphones! As everyone gathers to watch it air on TV, Monica seems unaware of its deficits. Playing into stereotypes — a Black guy breakdancing to hip-hop; a monk listening to vaguely Eastern New Age music — is bad; closing the spot with the slogan “All Vibezz Matter” is much worse. The office’s social media team, all young twentysomethings, probably would have tried to stop this ad from getting to air if they’d been involved in the creative process, but they weren’t, which is a mistake the...

Lucasfilm recently announced a new Star Wars trilogy to be led by Simon Kinberg, known for his work on Fox’s X-Men films. The news was expected to spark major fan excitement, but the response has been surprisingly lukewarm.
Since the announcement, fan reactions—and even media commentary, which is typically more neutral—have leaned negative. It appears that many fans aren’t looking forward to this new installment, and given recent challenges within the franchise, there may be good reason for the skepticism.
While some hold out hope that Kinberg might revive the series’ classic spirit, Kathleen Kennedy’s recent comments about moving the franchise beyond George Lucas’ original vision suggest that may not be the direction. In this piece, we’ll delve into an insightful analysis from ComicBookMovie.com and highlight fan reactions to this upcoming trilogy.

Lucasfilm recently announced a new Star Wars trilogy that will be headed by Simon Kinberg, best known for his work on several films from Fox’s X-Men franchise. The announcement was something big and it was supposed to result in a lot of fan enthusiasm, but based on what we’re seeing, the reactions are everything but!
Namely, after the announcement, the reactions by fans, but also by media outlets – which is rare – have been mostly negative and it doesn’t look like anyone is looking forward to these movies, and based on the recent successes of the franchise, there seems to be a good reason for it.
While some fans are hopeful that Kinberg might bring back the franchise to its roots, Kathleen Kennedy’s comments about the franchise needing to move away from George Lucas’ original narrative don’t seem to indicate this.

The Star Wars franchise is a mess. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's time in charge of the studio has been chaotic, disorganised, and directionless. Meanwhile, a small section of the fanbase has become increasingly vocal and grotesquely toxic.
Over the years, a lot of hate has been directed at Kennedy because she's a woman. If that sort of misogynistic Bs is what you're hoping to find here, move along now. The fact is, the executive has delivered a lot of hits for the Disney-owned studio, breaking box office records and helping put Disney+ on the map with The Mandalorian.
However, those achievements are quickly being overshadowed and this week's reports about a new Star Wars trilogy are the final straw. It's time for Kennedy to go before the damage done to this franchise becomes irreparable.

Simon Kinberg, the writer of Fox’s “X-Men” movies, is the latest in a long carousel of writers and producers who will try their hand at bringing “Star Wars” back to the big screen.
Kinberg will develop, write, and produce a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films for Lucasfilm, according to a report first in Deadline. Though there’s some difference of opinion in the trades as to whether the series will continue the Skywalker Saga and be Episodes X-xii or will be focused on a new group of characters.
While there have been a plethora of “Star Wars” series on Disney+ in the last five years, there hasn’t been a single theatrical “Star Wars” movie since the Skywalker Saga concluded with “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker” back in 2019. There have though been a lot of start and stop efforts, with a slew of filmmakers and writers coming and going over the years.

Quando’s cousin Lul Pab was murdered instead, spurring Quando’s anguished cries at the crime scene. Samuel L. Jackson has played Nick Fury in 12 Marvel films and three TV shows. Out of all those appearances, the actor said Captain America: The Winter Soldier featured Fury's best scene in the MCU.
Iron Man's post-credits scene was a mind-blowing moment for MCU fans. Nick Fury's cameo hinted at an Avengers film and the lead-up installments to Infinity War and Endgame; it's reasonable to credit the franchise's birth to Samuel L. Jackson's first appearance. Nick Fury has since been a recurring presence in major events throughout the McU's timeline, even though the earlier films depicted him as a much more grounded character. In an interview with GQ, Jackson revealed Nick Fury's standout moment in Captain America: The Winter Soldier; the actor said that film saw Fury at his peak, holding his own as a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative.

Fight Club marked a turning point in the career of director David Fincher. Battered and bruised from the debacle of Alien 3, he had all but stepped away from Hollywood when he met with Fox executives Laura Ziskin and Bill Mechanic about the film. Chuck Palahniuk's novel was a reinvention of the serial killer subgenre, and the movie adaptation would revitalize Fincher's career. Fight Club would reveal David Fincher as a formidable filmmaker who had no intention of going quietly.
Equal parts gender identity debate and economic inequality fable, Fight Club attracted controversy. Edward Norton was fresh off American History X and Brad Pitt was forging his own path into Hollywood history when the two came together for the film. In the years since its lackluster cinema release in 1999, the movie has divided audiences and attained cult status through DVD and Blu-ray.

Unbreakable blends Shyamalan's unique style with a superhero origin story. The film deconstructs traditional superhero tropes and ends on a somber, unexpected note. Despite Shyamalan's divisive reputation, Unbreakable remains a masterpiece in the superhero genre.
Few filmmakers are as polarizing as M. Night Shyamalan. The Sixth Sense opened to rapturous reviews, earning him a legion of dedicated fans. Critics admired his atmospheric direction and patient approach to storytelling, blending somber themes with traditional horror thrills. However, Shyamalan has spent his career trying to recapture lighting in a bottle. His uncompromising style made him a controversial cinematic figure, with films like Signs and The Village proving divisive, especially amongst audiences. Many began to doubt Shyamylan's talent, especially after The Happening and The Last Airbender further sullied his good name. Despite his infamous reputation, the auteur is no one-hit wonder. Shyamalan's best picture is a deeply unconventional take on one of Hollywood's most popular genres.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. That was certainly the case for director Doug Liman, who needed to film a quick scene for a movie and accidentally created an entirely new trend of movie aesthetics. The "shaky cam" technique is used in a number of films today, particularly "found footage" films, but its use was popularized by Matt Damon's Jason Bourne films and from one scene in particular from the first film.
In an interview with IGN, while discussing his favorite scenes from his biggest movies, Liman points to a brief scene in his 2002 film The Bourne Identity for pioneering the "shaky cam" aesthetic. The movie is considered a classic modern action film because of its unique style, typified by one scene in particular. The scene, which occurs about 49 minutes into the movie, is brief and involves Matt Damon's Bourne entering the Gare du Nord train station...

The Instigators is a new film from Doug Liman, a director who burst onto the scene with the Sundance-rejected indie hit Swingers and the criminally underseen but ultra-cool Go. Yet, somehow, Liman transitioned from cult comedies to big-action Hollywood blockbusters with the first two films in The Bourne franchise and the film that made Jennifer Aniston a divorcee, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
In addition to critically approved films like American Made and Fair Game, Liman has a filmography stacked with critical and box office disappointments. Real stinkers include the stagnant Chaos Walking, the forgettably campy Road House, the underwhelming Jumper, the obligatory Three Musketeers, and the streaming film Locked Down, which had many rooting for a Covid-19 victory.
Unfortunately, things will not improve with The Instigators, mainly because of a thoughtless and inattentive script that never bothers to sweat the details.

Science fiction movies are known for exploring complicated and intriguing ideas through entertaining stories. The genre has seen some of the most transformational and influential directors and writers turn in a variety of unique films, from dystopian detective tales to epic world-building stories. However, while many of these worked as films, some could live up to their potential even better as a TV series.
Sci-fi movies can often compress stories that work much better in an extended, decompressed format, one that allows for more character development. These longer formats also allow for a much more detailed, in-depth look at the worlds crafted by their creators. Recent years have seen many sci-fi movies land TV series with mixed effects, and some movies have much higher potential than others.

Some promising franchises like Eragon and Detective Pikachu failed to launch sequels due to underwhelming sales and development issues. Despite earning decent box office numbers, Power Rangers and Alita faced criticism and mixed reviews, leading to the cancellation of planned sequels. The Mummy and Jumper had potential to establish expansive universes, but poor reception and negative reviews prevented them from moving forward.
Some franchises that failed to launch were incredibly promising, and if the studios pushed through and made a sequel, they could have built extraordinary film universes. Franchises appear to be taking over Hollywood as every studio rushes to build their own multi-billion dollar movie IP to rack up sales and keep pumping out new stories. Jumper, Justin Anderson’s first short, opened on a naked man bathing in a pool. Conceived in 2014 for the tenth anniversary of British fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, the film was a riff on Pasolini’s Teorema; it followed a lunar stranger who shows up uninvited at a luscious Spanish villa and upends the frigid lives of its tenants. Ten years later, the same idea and shot survive more or less intact in Anderson’s feature debut, Swimming Home, based on a 2011 Man Booker-shortlisted novel by Deborah Levy. Except this time the setting is a summer home on an unidentified Greek island, the nude intruder a young woman, and her target is not a whole family but its taciturn, haunted patriarch.
His name his Josef (Christopher Abbott); hers is Kitti (Ariane Labed). He’s a poet and she’s a botanist––but this is his story, not hers, and for all...

Award-winning artist Justin Anderson’s debut feature “Swimming Home” has its world premiere in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam. Variety has secured access to the first clip from the film.
The film, an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s 2012 Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel, centers on poet Joe (Christopher Abbott) and war photographer Isabel (Mackenzie Davis), whose marriage is dying when Kitti (Ariane Labed), a naked stranger found floating in the pool at their sunny holiday villa in Greece, is invited to stay. Oscar nominated Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki plays a significant role in the film as does emerging actor Freya Hannan-Mills.
In 2014, Anderson directed “Jumper,” a short inspired by Pasolini’s “Teorema,” about a man emerging from a pool and standing naked in the window during a family dinner. A friend saw the film and suggested that he read Levy’s novel. The book resonated with Anderson and he contacted Levy.

As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. In this age of high-budgets and higher-expectations, reboots and remakes are among the only types of movies that major studios like to make these days.
So whether you’re feeling cynical about this year’s offerings or optimistic about the second swings filmmakers are taking, here are the biggest reboots and remakes coming in 2024.
Mean Girls (January 12)
Although the promotional materials tried to do their best to conceal it, the 2024 Mean Girls doesn’t so much adapt the beloved 2004 comedy, but rather the Broadway musical that followed. Which means that, yes, viewers will hear more songs than “Jingle Bell Rock.” Singer Reneé Rapp reprises her stage performance as lead Plastic Regina George,...

Star Wars is a long-running sci-fi space opera franchise with many films, TV series, and video games to back it up. Beginning the franchise with Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1977, the film was expected to be a stand-alone film and was originally just marketed as Star Wars. But thanks to the extreme success of A New Hope, George Lucas expanded the film and created the Original Trilogy. The trilogy’s popularity led to a Prequel Trilogy being made between 1999 and 2005, and an eventual Sequel Trilogy from 2015 to 2019. Now, Lucasfilm is looking to develop a new trilogy set after Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.
The Prequel Trilogy consisted of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Episode II - The Attack of the Clones, and Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. These movies introduced a new cast of actors playing either...

The shift to blockbuster filmmaking in the 2000s paved the way for a multitude of big-budget films, especially in the science-fiction genre. Between 2000 and 2009, studios were still figuring out exactly what audiences wanted from sci-fi movies. Disaster stories, dystopian futures, aliens, time travel and alternate dimensions exploded onto the big screen, with the expansion resulting in a number of projects that never quite got their due.

Hayden Christensen, who has played Anakin Skywalker in various Star Wars movies and series, has signed with Independent Artist Group for representation.
The actor famously nabbed the coveted part of the heroic-yet-tragic young man who would become Darth Vader in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and concluded his fall from grace with Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
Seventeen years later, he reprised his role for the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, a massive hit for the streamer, and the recently finished Ahsoka, which also proved to be a hit.

Legend has it… nothing rhymes with the word “orange” and while sitting across from Anderson Cooper, rapper Eminem proceeded that to debunk this lyrical myth. When it comes to word play and rhymes, the man can do the impossible. Hitting it big as an anti-pop star, going after all the top charting artists but this Mc soon became so successful that he accidentally became a top charting pop star himself. But of course, this legendary musician tried to fight off the demons of fame and fortune when they manifested in the form of substance abuse and depression. He would over come them, then relapse and recover again… but where he is at in his monster career now? Is he still rapping it up in da streets? Still topping the charts? Still spitting super fly fresh lyrics from his angry little mouth, which now has a weird beard?

The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

In the last few years, action cinema has significantly improved with instant classics like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Raid 2, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and Baby Driver. While many of these films are granted massive marketing campaigns and huge budgets, there is also a rising tide of low-budget films that are released directly on streaming services or VOD. While some of these don’t hit theaters because of their lack of quality, the VOD action genre has produced some genuinely underrated gems. One such film was 2015’s American Heist, a crime thriller following the tragic relationship between the ex-con Frankie Kelly (Adrien Brody) and his sensitive brother James (Hayden Christensen). Jordana Brewster also co-stars as James’ love interest, Emily.
Christensen’s production company Glacier Films had funded the film as part of a massive slate of projects, but sadly it was not able to make back its budget. American Heist...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Two days before this past Christmas, Tory Lanez was found guilty of three counts related to the July 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. He now faces over 20 years in prison and deportation to his native Canada. For many, the verdict represents justice for Megan, but others contend that there can be no true retribution for victims of violent crimes. Tory’s jail time doesn’t undo Megan’s physical harm, nor the barrage of mistreatment from people who ridiculed her claims for over two years.

Exclusive: Scott Gardenhour (13 Hours) is set to produce Ponzi: Pure and True alongside Flag On The Play Productions and producers Dominic Zamprogna and Travis Schneider. The upcoming film adapts the Charles Ponzi biography Ponzi: The Incredible True Story of the King of Financial Cons by Donald Dunn.
Ponzi was, of course, the Italian swindler notorious for his “Ponzi scheme,” used to cheat would-be investors across North America out of tens of millions of dollars, beginning in the 1920s. The film on the con artist has been written by Richard Kahan. Producers’ search for a director for the project is now underway.
“Before Madoff, before any other big-time hustler, there was Charles Ponzi,” said Gardenhour in a statement. “It’s time to meet the swindler’s swindler, the man who invented The Ponzi Scheme. And with an incredible script by Richard Kahan, the true story is crazier and much stranger than fiction.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives an exciting filming update for Doug Liman's upcoming Road House remake. The upcoming Amazon Prime Video movie will reimagine the plot of the 1989 original, which starred Patrick Swayze, Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. The film was negatively received by critics upon its release but became a cult classic over the years. Initially, a remake started to develop when Ronda Rousey was attached to star with Nick Cassavetes directing. That version was scrapped and in 2021 Gyllenhaal and Liman announced that they produce their own remake.
Now, in a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the release of Disney's Strange World, Gyllenhaal confirmed that filming on the movie has wrapped. However, he has also said that they will be doing pickups in a month, while also hinting that the film is going to be a lot of fun. Check out what...

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

A follow-up to the 130M-plus grossing movie Law Abiding Citizen is happening with producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer returning, as well as Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel reprising their roles as producers.
The storyline is being kept secrets. The first movie starred Butler and Jamie Foxx and was directed by F. Gary Gray, and followed assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter. The pic in December on Netflix became one of the top three most viewed movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill are producing alongside Foster and Wimmer. Foster will produce under his Warp Films banner.
