Richard Gadd, the creator of Baby Reindeer, has recruited Fantastic Four star Jamie Bell to join him in the new drama series Half Man. The HBO and BBC show will run for six episodes with plans to begin shooting next year.

Fan Expo San Francisco is almost here, and the convention's slate of notable celebrity guests is one of the most exciting things to look forward to about the festivities. The Fan Expo circuit of conventions has become a titan of pop culture in recent years, with an impressive schedule of events at major cities across the continental United States, though Fan Expo Canada has been expanding the brand's premise even further. Namely, after the announcement, the reactions by fans, but also by media outlets – which is rare – have been mostly negative and it doesn’t look like anyone is looking forward to these movies, and based on the recent successes of the franchise, there seems to be a good reason for it.

While some fans are hopeful that Kinberg might bring back the franchise to its roots, Kathleen Kennedy’s comments about the franchise needing to move away from George Lucas’ original narrative don’t seem to indicate this.

Simon Kinberg, the writer of Fox’s “X-Men” movies, is the latest in a long carousel of writers and producers who will try their hand at bringing “Star Wars” back to the big screen.

Kinberg will develop, write, and produce a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films for Lucasfilm, according to a report first in Deadline. Though there’s some difference of opinion in the trades as to whether the series will continue the Skywalker Saga and be Episodes X-xii or will be focused on a new group of characters.

While there have been a plethora of “Star Wars” series on Disney+ in the last five years, there hasn’t been a single theatrical “Star Wars” movie since the Skywalker Saga concluded with “Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker” back in 2019. The Instigators is a new film from Doug Liman, a director who burst onto the scene with the Sundance-rejected indie hit Swingers and the criminally underseen but ultra-cool Go. Yet, somehow, Liman transitioned from cult comedies to big-action Hollywood blockbusters with the first two films in The Bourne franchise and the film that made Jennifer Aniston a divorcee, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

In addition to critically approved films like American Made and Fair Game, Liman has a filmography stacked with critical and box office disappointments. Real stinkers include the stagnant Chaos Walking, the forgettably campy Road House, the underwhelming Jumper, the obligatory Three Musketeers, and the streaming film Locked Down, which had many rooting for a Covid-19 victory.

Unfortunately, things will not improve with The Instigators, mainly because of a thoughtless and inattentive script that never bothers to sweat the details.

Paramount is moving forward with a new Star Trek movie that was announced in January. At the time, it was announced that Toby Haynes (Star Wars: Andor) would direct, and now Paramount has reportedly turned to filmmaker Simon Kinberg to help bring the project to life.

As revealed by the What I'm Hearing... newsletter (per Deadline), Kinberg is in negotiations to produce the next Star Trek movie at Paramount. Kinberg is known for producing both Deadpool movies starring Ryan Reynolds along with Hugh Jackman's Logan, and he serves as an executive producer for the upcoming film, Deadpool & Wolverine. He also wrote and directed the X-Men movie Dark Phoenix, and he also served as a writer on the franchise films X-Men: Day of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. Kinberg, who co-wrote the 2015 Fantastic Four movie, also produced films like Jumper, The Martian, and The New Mutants.

In the 2022 miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen, and Ewan McGregor reunited on screen for the first time since 2005 when their iconic characters locked horns once again. Award-winning artist Justin Anderson’s debut feature “Swimming Home” has its world premiere in competition at International Film Festival Rotterdam. Variety has secured access to the first clip from the film.

The film, an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s 2012 Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel, centers on poet Joe (Christopher Abbott) and war photographer Isabel (Mackenzie Davis), whose marriage is dying when Kitti (Ariane Labed), a naked stranger found floating in the pool at their sunny holiday villa in Greece, is invited to stay. Oscar nominated Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki plays a significant role in the film as does emerging actor Freya Hannan-Mills.

In 2014, Anderson directed “Jumper,” a short inspired by Pasolini’s “Teorema,” about a man emerging from a pool and standing naked in the window during a family dinner. A friend saw the film and suggested that he read Levy’s novel. The book resonated with Anderson and he contacted Levy.

As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. Hell Jumper sits on a six-strong Sheffield Doc Fest slate that also features shows commemorating anniversaries of the Hiroshima bomb and the miners’ strike.

Hell Jumper tells the story of Chris Parry and friends, a group of twenty-somethings who headed to Ukraine in a white van and hooked up with a rag-tag bunch of civilian ‘evacuators’ to help people escape their homes. Once there, the group’s missions grew riskier and riskier while they took to TikTok and Instagram to show footage of their daring rescues, with Parry killed trying to save an elderly woman trapped in her home.

In a video that quickly went viral, Drake and Lil Yachty are seen in a portion of a two-hour livestream promoting the online casino Stake.

At one point, Drake logs into what appears to be his Td account, in order to send a $499 tip to a Stake user named Daisy.

In the last few years, action cinema has significantly improved with instant classics like Mad Max: Fury Road, The Raid 2, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and Baby Driver. A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).

You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”

Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Jack Quaid has donned a festive The Boys-themed sweater for the holidays. Quaid has been a main cast member of the subversive superhero series since it debuted on Prime Video in 2019, playing the character Hughie Campbell. Hughie is a civilian who joins The Boys (a vigilante group hellbent on taking down a corrupt group of superheroes known as The Seven) after his girlfriend is killed by A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), a supe who is addicted to drugs and has the power of super-speed.

Exclusive: Scott Gardenhour (13 Hours) is set to produce Ponzi: Pure and True alongside Flag On The Play Productions and producers Dominic Zamprogna and Travis Schneider. The upcoming film adapts the Charles Ponzi biography Ponzi: The Incredible True Story of the King of Financial Cons by Donald Dunn.

Ponzi was, of course, the Italian swindler notorious for his “Ponzi scheme,” used to cheat would-be investors across North America out of tens of millions of dollars, beginning in the 1920s. The film on the con artist has been written by Richard Kahan. Producers’ search for a director for the project is now underway.

“Before Madoff, before any other big-time hustler, there was Charles Ponzi,” said Gardenhour in a statement. “It’s time to meet the swindler’s swindler, the man who invented The Ponzi Scheme. And with an incredible script by Richard Kahan, the true story is crazier and much stranger than fiction.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives an exciting filming update for Doug Liman's upcoming Road House remake. The upcoming Amazon Prime Video movie will reimagine the plot of the 1989 original, which starred Patrick Swayze, Ben Gazzara, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. The film was negatively received by critics upon its release but became a cult classic over the years. Initially, a remake started to develop when Ronda Rousey was attached to star with Nick Cassavetes directing. That version was scrapped and in 2021 Gyllenhaal and Liman announced that they produce their own remake.

Now, in a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the release of Disney's Strange World, Gyllenhaal confirmed that filming on the movie has wrapped. Kelly Clarkson is lending her voice to celebrate the LGBTQ community and discourage discrimination on Spirit Day. On Thursday, during her beloved “Kellyoke” segment of her talk show, Clarkson sang Third Eye Blind’s “Jumper.”

After belting the track’s lyrics while backed by her My Band Y’all, Clarkson explained the significance of the poignant 1997 rock song.

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.

Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).

Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.

The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.

Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

A follow-up to the 130M-plus grossing movie Law Abiding Citizen is happening with producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer returning, as well as Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel reprising their roles as producers.

The storyline is being kept secrets. The first movie starred Butler and Jamie Foxx and was directed by F. Gary Gray, and followed assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter. The pic in December on Netflix became one of the top three most viewed movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable.

Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill are producing alongside Foster and Wimmer. Foster will produce under his Warp Films banner.
