“I have one question… who is wearing sequins?”
It’s a fair query for Cameron Bailey, Toronto International Film Festival’s CEO, to ask at Friday night’s world premiere of “Elton John: Never Too Late,” a revealing look at the generation-spanning musical (and fashion) icon.
Although he’s one of the best-selling artists of all time, a tearful John told the crowd at Roy Thomson Hall that family is more important to him than fame. “On my tombstone, I don’t want it to say he sold a million records. I want it to say he was a great dad and great husband.”
“Never Too Late” captures John’s journey to becoming one of the world’s biggest rock stars, bookended by his landmark performances at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in 1975 to more than 100,000 fans and again in 2022 as the final North American stop on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour.

Gena Rowlands, whose seminal and fearless performance in “A Woman Under the Influence” inspired a generation and who starred in many other John Cassavetes features as well as the romance “The Notebook,” died Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, Calif. She was 94.
Her death was confirmed by the office of her son’s agent. In June, Nick Cassavetes, who directed his mother in “The Notebook,” shared that the three-time Emmy winner and two-time Oscar nominee had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Rowlands’ role as Mabel Longhetti in the 1974 drama “A Woman Under the Influence,” written for her and directed by husband John Cassavetes, landed the actor the first of two Academy Award nominations. The other nom was for “Gloria” (1980), also directed by her husband. In November 2015, she was awarded an honorary Academy Award at the annual Governors Awards in recognition of her storied career.

A song from The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is so old-fashioned it could have come out during the Victorian era. One of The Beatles’ rock ‘n’ roll peers said that he couldn’t have written the song because he had no sense of time. Regardless, that singer’s tunes have lasted over the course of generations.
Donovan on why Paul McCartney wrote a song from The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’
One of The Beatles’ fellow British Invasion stars was Donovan. He contributed to psychedelia as much as they did with hits such as “Sunshine Superman,” “Atlantis, and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” Donovan also accompanied the Fab Four on their fateful trip to India to meet the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and learn about Transcendental Meditation.
During a 2013 interview with BusinessLive, Donovan discussed his own sense of time. “One couldn’t remember last Tuesday or think about next Tuesday,” he said,...

The Beatles were the most popular and important act of the British Invasion, but no classic rock fan should ignore the achievements of Donovan. Notably, John Lennon was a big fan of one of Donovan’s songs, and he played it over and over. The “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer revealed what he thought of John as a person. John felt that he and Donovan were on a similar wavelength.
John Lennon loved 1 of Donovan’s folk songs
Donovan is known for two types of songs: psychedelic ditties like “Mellow Yellow,” “Atlantis,” and “Sunshine Superman,” and folk tunes such as “Colours,” “Catch the Wind,” and “Universal Soldier.” A 2018 article from Goldmine says John was taken with Donovan’s folk song “Turquoise.” He had a vinyl copy of the song and played it repeatedly on a personal jukebox he brought with him on tour.

In 2021 the Taliban government took control of Afghanistan which brought in a desperate erosion of women’s rights in the country. This became the driving force behind the writing and direction of Elham Ehsas’ short film Yellow. Rather than focusing on the macro picture of injustice that women in Taliban controlled Afghanistan are living through, Ehsas instead dials into the specifics of a seemingly innocuous encounter between two people as they interact in a Kabul Chadari store where a young woman goes to buy her first full body veil, and through this humble human interaction, spotlights the limitations and oppression endured by women in the country. Following the film’s BAFTA nomination last week, we were able to sit down with Ehsas and speak to him about telling his female centric story from a man’s point of view, using close ups to place the audience into his protagonist’s...

In the vibrant days of youth, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Bong Joon-Ho, came across a group of extraordinary souls, brought together by a sole connection- the love for cinema. Before achieving global acclaim, Bong Joon-Ho was an ordinary college student with dreams of making films. With a group of graduate students and other movie buffs, Bong created a cinephile club, naming it ‘Yellow Door.’ Lee Hyuk-Rae, who was also an alum of the club, brought forth a heart-melting and inspiring documentary Yellow Door: 90s Lo-fi Film Club on Netflix. Reuniting with the former members of the club, Lee and Bong reminisced about those good old days of the 90s, when college life was as pleasing as the color palette of a Wes Anderson film.
In the year of 1992, the cinephile club ‘Yellow Door’ was founded on the second floor of a building in Seogyo-dong. During this time, Bong Joon-Ho was a graduate student of sociology,...

Prince William might be first in line to the throne, but, like many parents, he knows how challenging it can be to get a baby to sleep. Enter his and Kate Middleton’s oldest child, Prince George. When the now-10-year-old was an infant, the Prince of Wales had a “bizarre tactic” for getting baby George to bed. Hint: It involved “belting” songs.
William and Kate Middleton initially cared for baby Prince George without help from a nanny
After becoming parents on July 22, 2013, with George’s arrival, the Prince and Princess of Wales, then the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, headed to the Middleton family home.
There, they weren’t surrounded by a team of professionals, instead opting to enter parenthood sans a traditional royal nanny. Their decision to be “hands-on parents” supposedly left the late Queen Elizabeth II scratching her head at the “generational” difference.

The first week of December has already brought in quite the haul for Netflix subscribers. The service has dropped two films in the Jurassic Park series, The Da Vinci Code and its sequel Angels & Demons, and the brand new David Fincher effort Mank, among others, but as we’ve all come to expect, there’s always more on the way to add to our must-watch lists.
Even better, today’s selection of new content encompasses multiple genres and formats, so you shouldn’t find it too difficult to round up something that you’ll want to see. The most notable title in the haul, though, is an often overlooked action thriller that you may want to give a chance.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

It has begun. The steady trickle of films about Labradors who save Christmas, American girls marrying European princes, and parents learning that their kids are more important than their jobs, is with us. “Another Classic Hollywood Problem Film?”
By Raymond Benson
Recently there was hue and cry about the new streaming service HBO Max and their decision to remove the 1939 Oscar-winning classic Gone with the Wind from their lineup because of its no-question-about-it racial stereotypes. While the intention might be admirable, there is also the danger of destroying a part of cultural history that should be studied and learned from, rather than rendering it invisible. Besides, viewers have a choice to watch a movie, unlike, say, gazing at a statue on public display that is there for all to see no matter what.
Another Hollywood classic from the same era that certainly falls into identical “problem” areas is William Wyler’s Jezebel, which earned Bette Davis her second Oscar, awarded supporting actress Fay Bainter a trophy, and was nominated for Best Picture of 1938. It, too, is...

Chicago – The year 2016 was a dangerous one to be a famous person. In the past twelve months, one dozen of my former photo subjects passed away, celebrities who at one time or another famously posed for my lens. However, on a positive note, at least photos are forever. Or to quote the immortal words of Pee Wee Herman – “Why don’t you take a picture, it will last longer!”
The ranking of the portraits are based on a combination of the star power wattage of the subjects, the artistic results and the difficulty of landing the quarry…for those budding smart-phone-celebrity-stalkers who may wish to play along at home. Short films provide an outlet for filmmakers to showcase their genre talents in a format with fewer restraints, making them a Fantastic Fest favorite. So cute! ‘Jay-Jay I Love you so,’ Beyonce sang in her documentary on Feb. 16. The loving couple serenade each other soon after finding out she’s pregnant.
Beyonce’s documentary Life Is But A Dream aired on HBO on Feb. 16, following a one-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah’s Next Chapter. The most touching moment in the film, for us, was when Beyonce and Jay-z sang Coldplay’s “Yellow” to each other, written by their close friend Chris Martin. They were celebrating her pregnancy and it was so adorable.
The documentary offered an inside look at the singer’s life and career — a side of her we’ve never seen before.
The HBO film shows footage of a sonogram, Beyonce’s growing bump and video of the singer posing nude as she neared her due date.
Beyonce, 31, also touches upon the miscarriage she suffered, which Jay-z revealed in his song “Glory,...

Justin is ‘ridin dirtyyyyyyyyy’ with Lil’ Twist, parading around on a four wheeler and posting sexy pics on Instagram. Is he trying to get Selena’s attention?
Justin Bieber admitted that he’s “not in the happiest place” after his break up from Selena Gomez, so what better way to try and win back his ex than with some sexy pics!
On Jan. 30, Justin shared a number of photos of he and Lil’ Twist riding four wheelers, covered in mud.
“Me and Twizzy gettin a little muddy,” Justin, 18, wrote under the first pic. He added, “Ridin dirtyyyyyyyyy,” on this “fun day.”
