The “Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa is in talks to play the late Anthony Bourdain in A24’s upcoming biopic, “Tony,” according to media reports.
Trevor White and Tim White will produce through their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, along with Matthew Miller and executive producer Emily Rose. Matt Johnson, director and cowriter of “BlackBerry,” will also produce and is in talks to direct from a script by Lou Howe and Todd Bartels.
Bourdain achieved global fame with his unflinching book “Kitchen Confidential,” which pulled back the curtain on the cutthroat world of culinary arts with acerbic wit. He then turned that fame into critical acclaim as a travel documentarian, first with the Travel Channel show “No Reservations” and then with his CNN series “Parts Unknown,” the latter of which won 12 Primetime Emmys.
Bourdain committed suicide in 2018. His life became the subject of a 2021 Morgan Neville documentary, “Roadrunner.”

The reason we love The Apprentice is because we secretly (or not so secretly) think they’re mostly idiots and we could do better. We’d probably all win Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Jeopardy in our heads. Certainly the Made In Chelsea gang would embrace us, and we could do with a flirty Gordon Ramsey to come and sort out our business, or someone to do up the house or the garden or the car, and storage hunters looks fun… But not that many of us could actually be arsed to apply.
So imagine a fantasy world where you can appear in a non-fiction show without any of the faff, totally by your rules in any capacity you like. Want to be on The Traitors? You can be Claudia Winkleman if you like! Want to travel the world with Travel Man – pick your destination and your traveling companion as you wish.

Some actors become so prestigious, they can get almost any part they want without auditioning; the awards they've won and the box office receipts from their past blockbusters are all that's necessary to land them a highly-coveted role in an upcoming production. Of course, there are plenty of top performers who still have to audition for roles. But unless a bigger name gets into the running, there's often little standing between them and the chance to play an important character.
However, what rarely gets talked about are actors who not only get turned down for famous TV and film roles but aren't even granted the opportunity to audition for a part. It's especially surprising when the rejected thespian is already an A-lister; you'd think their star power would be enough to at least warrant a courtesy audition. Here, we take a look at a few actors who were never given a chance at notable roles.

Michael K. Williams commanded attention in the purest sense of the term. He didn’t ask for it, nor did he demand it. He simply had it, with a quiet determination and undeniable magnetism that inevitably made him an irresistible center of gravity. When he spoke, whether as himself or one of his indelible characters, people listened. That he won’t be able to do so again makes for a loss as sharp as it is surreal.
Williams, whose death on Sept. 6 at the age of 54 has shocked the industry, made himself one of TV and film’s most recognizable and compelling actors. His performance as Omar on HBO’s “The Wire” electrified television when it first debuted almost 20 years ago — not just because an enigmatic, gay, Black man with a criminal record as impressive as his strict moral code was an exceedingly rare character to see, but because Williams made him impossible to forget.

Fueled by strong reviews, “Roadrunner” ignited the independent movie theater scene, collecting $1.9 million from 925 U.S. cinemas.
The documentary, chronicling the life of the late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, landed in eighth place on box office charts, which is pretty good for a non-fiction film. Its ticket sales, averaging to a strong $2,050 per location, surpassed Roadside’s spy drama “The Courier” ($1.88 million) and A24’s social media satire “Zola ($1.2 million) to land the biggest opening weekend of the year for a specialty film. It also secured the top debut for a documentary in 2021, outperforming Searchlight’s “Summer of Soul,” which opened to $650,000 from 752 screens.
Unlike “Black Widow,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and other recent releases, “Roadrunner” is only playing in theaters and won’t be available on streaming services or TV until a later date.

Two releases, very well reviewed and pretty widely available by recent specialty standards, look set to heat up the arthouse box office this weekend — Pig with Nicolas Cage in one of his best performances in years and Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain open on 600 and 952 screens respectively, and only in theaters.
Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville’s documentary about the late chef, writer and adventurer Bourdain is an intimate look at his rise to world-renowned cultural icon, capturing his presence, voice and inner demons. Vigorous marketing by distributor Focus Features was made possible by public familiarity with the Peabody and Emmy-award winning Bourdain, whose weekly series Parts Unknown moved to CNN in 2012 after running for years on Discovery’s Travel Channel (where it was called No Reservations). The intrepid master storyteller tragically took his own life in 2018 at age 61.

By the time Anthony Bourdain committed suicide in 2018, he had lived many lives. The “Parts Unknown” host became an unwitting celebrity chef with the 2000 publication of “Kitchen Confidential,” his behind-the-scenes exposé from his days in the high-end restaurant business. His bold truth-telling and acerbic tone easily translated to TV success, which Bourdain carried across three programs as he increased in ambition. At the height of his fame, Bourdain had his own genre of storytelling, using food and travel as a platform for studying people and places around the world.
The success came at great personal cost. In “Roadrunner,” documentarian Morgan Neville explores the hardships of Bourdain’s globe-trotting lifestyle, from the way it impacted his family life to the combustible relationship he developed with his many peers. Combining ample behind-the-scenes footage from the shows with over a dozen talking heads, “Roadrunner” provides an enthralling deep-dive on the evolution of Bourdain...

Why did he do it? That’s the question that anyone who’s ever been touched by the hungry, life-force spirit of Anthony Bourdain will have at the top of his or her head going into “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.” Directed by the award-winning Morgan Neville, the documentary, which premiered tonight at the Tribeca Festival, is an intimate and fascinating portrait of the beloved celebrity chef and television globe-trotter. It is also, inevitably, a spiritual investigation into why his life ended. On June 8, 2018, Bourdain hung himself in his hotel room. Three years later, it’s still shocking to think that his name could be included in the same sentence with the word “suicide.”
We all know that suicide, too often, is a cruel mystery, that it has a way of mocking our need for “why.” (Bourdain was a brilliant writer who left no note.) We also know that...

From the early days of his breakthrough exposé “Kitchen Confidential” through the TV adventures of “No Reservations” that ended with his suicide, Anthony Bourdain lived hard and fast to explore the world without an iota of bullshit. On camera, his punk rock attitude complemented his baritone declarations at every turn, and fueled globe-trotting journeys that wrestled unfamiliar cultures into intimate experiences. His abrupt suicide in 2018, in the midst of filming a new episode in northeastern France, had a terrible kind of logic to it because Bourdain’s uncompromising spirit meant that he would always have the last word.
All of which creates intimidating expectations for “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,” documentarian Morgan Neville’s enthralling deep-dive into the mystique of a man so keen on exploring and explaining the world around him that he barely had time to explore himself. Given that fans already know where “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” will go, documentarian Morgan Neville (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”) makes the risky — but poignant and thoughtful — choice to begin at the end.
The celebrity chef, author and television host died by suicide three years ago, so it’s inevitable that a melancholy air suffuses what is nevertheless a warm celebration of an unusually full life. The effortlessly charismatic Bourdain never met a camera he couldn’t seduce, and Neville makes copious use of the 100,000 hours of video with which the project began.
This means we get to learn about Bourdain primarily from the man himself. Through well-edited archival footage, Neville takes us from Bourdain’s final months back in time, to his early years of aimlessness and drug addiction, followed by improbable achievements in the restaurant world and well beyond. The food industry felt a terrible shock at the unexpected loss of author, traveler and chef Anthony Bourdain. Almost three years to the date of his death, a new documentary has dropped exploring the creator’s past and tremendous influence on the food industry. “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain,” will debut in theaters on July 16.
Directed by Morgan Neville, the documentary explores the life of the renowned chef piecing together footage from around the world, past interviews, and current interviews with his friends, fellow chefs and closest associates.
“One minute I was standing next to a deep fryer, and the next I was watching the sun set over the Sahara,” Bourdain says in the trailer. “What am I doing here?”
Bourdain reached national prominence with his 2000 book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly,” which earned him a reputation as raw and rough-around-the-edges, setting him aside from other celebrity chefs.

Bourdain reached national prominence with his 2000 book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly,” which earned him a reputation as raw and rough-around-the-edges, setting him aside from other celebrity chefs.

For those for whom it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, there’s good news! The long-awaited and highly-anticipated Friends reunion special is hitting HBO Max (where all 236 episodes of the hit series are currently available for streaming) on Thursday, May 27! (Barcalounger chairs to enhance viewing pleasure are purely optional.) Hosted by James Corden, the episode marks the first time all six cast members will be sharing a screen in the 17 years since the show wrapped! As People magazine states in its recent cover story detailing the production, “Could we be any more excited?!”
A slew of the sitcom’s best-loved guest stars will be popping by to join in the fun, as well, including Reese Witherspoon, Tom Selleck and Maggie Wheeler (cue the “Oh my Gods!”). Justin Bieber, who was a wee six months old when the pilot aired, is also (inexplicably) making an appearance.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. Do you like lists? Well, here’s a doozy. Below is everything coming to Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime in June 2020.
Though the summer sun is starting to beat down, most of us are still being encouraged to stay indoors for Covid-19 related reasons. It’s not much fun, but at the very least, there’s an absolute ton of stuff landing in June that should distract you from the call of the beach.
Of particular note is the newly launched HBO Max, which is trying to catch the eye of potential subscribers with a red-hot first month. There’s an excellent selection of movies coming on June 1st, with horror titles like An American Werewolf in London (still the best werewolf movie ever made), Final Destinations 1-4, From Dusk til Dawn and Lifeforce.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

In 1999, when “Parts Unknown” executive producers Lydia Tenaglia and Chris Collins first approached Anthony Bourdain about turning his then-yet-to-be written book “A Cook’s Tour” into a television series, the chef-turned-author, with his recent best seller “Kitchen Confidential,” was more than skeptical. He had been a sharp critic of the wave of celebrity chef shows that had become popular staples of cable television.
“I don’t think he was locked on making a TV show even when we went to make ‘A Cook’s Tour,'” said Collins, when he and Tenaglia were guests on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast. “I think Tony saw it as an opportunity to double dip. He was getting paid not that much money to make this show; meanwhile, his designs were always on writing. The thought of being the guy in front of the camera yammering away was not his thing.”

The September 22 world premiere of “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” at this year’s Tribeca TV fest wasn’t a memorial. While the series won the Emmy for Outstanding Informational Series or Special just a few weeks ago, it did so under the burden of Bourdain’s recent suicide. However, the Season 12 opener, “Kenya,” was a joyful episode that focused on Bourdain and “United Shades of America” host W. Kamau Bell.
In the episode, the pair explored the country’s capital of Nairobi as well as the savannah and more rural communities, with memorable sequences in which Bell’s dining options included cow’s blood beverage and a goat’s eyeball.
At the Q&A following the premiere, director Morgan Fallon told Bell that his rookie status was an advantage: “What’s nice from, a scumbag producer point of view, is that we knew that you were going to eat anything...

David Simon has posted a lengthy tribute to the late Anthony Bourdain on his official website. The emotional post finds Simon, creator of HBO drama series “The Wire,” “Treme,” and “The Deuce,” looking back on his relationship with the celebrity chef, author, and television host. Bourdain was found dead in his French apartment on June 8 and his death was later ruled a suicide.
Simon remembered watching an episode of “No Reservations” while he was working on “Treme” and being struck by Bourdain’s presence on camera. The showrunner made it his mission to become friends with Bourdain in that moment.
“I was still on the sofa at four in the afternoon, still half-dressed, when I decided that my life could not be complete if I did not somehow become friends with Anthony Bourdain,” Simon wrote. “’This guy is so f—ing real,’ I remember telling my son [Ethan]. ‘This guy,’ Ethan replied,...

When I spoke to Anthony Bourdain on May 31, eight days before he committed suicide, I mostly wanted to talk about movies. While not everyone associated the food-show host with cinema, it informed every episode of CNN’s “No Reservations,” from the echoes of “Happy Together” in Buenos Aires to “City of Ghosts” in Thailand. He was a brilliant filmmaker in disguise.
Our conversation got granular. He shared references to revered and obscure filmmakers, recalled his youth experiences working through the Janus film library, and mused about a few new releases. It was a neat opportunity to explore the creative mindset behind a program that became more of a cultural investigation than a culinary one.
Food experts can assess how Bourdain brought a personable edge to highbrow cuisine, and pushed beyond fine-dining formulas to explore the value of food at every level of society. However, what defines his legacy may have...

We don’t know what Anthony Bourdain ate for his last meal, and today isn’t the day to ask. But we hope it was sushi. Because in interviews over the years, Bourdain was often asked what he would want for this last meal, and he always had the same answer.
When we were lucky enough to interview him in 2013, we didn’t raise the subject of last meals. But he brought it up himself.
“If I knew I was going to die tomorrow morning I’d probably be eating some really high-end sushi tonight,” he said.

A couple weeks ago, my parents and I sat down to watch the new episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” about Armenia, a country whose tragic and resilient history is inextricably interwoven with my family’s own. We’re used to seeing its stories flattened into allegory, its defining genocide swept aside, its unique position in history dismissed. But we were still optimistic when we pressed play, having come to trust Bourdain’s clear-eyed and curious approach to the world over years of watching him travel it on both CNN’s “Parts Unknown” and his nine-season Travel Channel show “No Reservations.” Given his passion, generosity, and the increasingly rare grace to know when his perspective might not be the most illuminating, we expected him to not just tell Armenia’s story, but to let Armenia tell its own story through good food and conversations broached in good faith. Sure enough,...
