Given their near-death experience at the end of Toy Story 3, it might have seemed like Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang were ready to ride off into the proverbial sunset after that third installment of the franchise, but Pixar quickly let it be known that was far from the case. Just a year later, a trio of shorts called Toy Story Toons began accompanying various Disney movies in theaters. Next up came the first Toy Story TV special, which featured Woody’s Roundup Gang venturing into a surprising new genre: horror.
First airing on ABC on October 16, 2013, Toy Story of Terror saw Woody, Buzz and Jessie take a trip to a hotel where toys quickly begin going missing, leaving only Jessie (Joan Cusack) to contend with a mysterious shadowy figure. After being isolated from the rest of the group, Jessie meets a lost toy named Combat Carl...

Is there room at the best picture table for more than one “part two?”
This year, several installments in established franchises are banging on the Academy’s door, hoping for a coveted slot in the category. With no clear frontrunner, this could be the season that more than one sequel secures a place in the race. That has happened only once, in 2022 (“Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick”).
The Oscars have long hesitated to embrace anything with a Roman numeral affixed to it. Historically, only nine sequels have been nominated for best picture: “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (1945), “The Godfather Part II” (1974), “The Godfather Part III” (1990), “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Toy Story 3” (2010), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022) and “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022). Just two — “Godfather 2” and “Return of the King” — won.

Litmus Music said Thursday that it has acquired Randy Newman’s share of his recorded music and publishing catalog.
The deal includes rights to the scores of the composer-singer-songwriter’s Oscar-winning Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. movies and his decades of hits including “I Love L.A.,” which is still heard after every Los Angeles Dodgers home win.
No deal terms were provided by Litmus, which was co-founded by former Capitol Records and Warner Bros Records president Dan McCarroll and Hank Forsythe and is backed by Carlyle Group. The company has done similar transactions with Katy Perry, Benny Blanco and Keith Urban.
“Randy Newman is a unique and brilliant songwriter, composer, and performer whose body of work has proven him to be an artist for the ages,” said McCarroll. “There is absolutely no one like him, and his influence on the music world cannot be overstated. We couldn’t be more...

In its nearly 30 years of existence, DreamWorks Animation has had a remarkable trajectory marked primarily by the bulk of franchises it created, as much as through the quality of the films themselves. Consider that one of its chief competitors, Pixar Animation Studios, started making feature-length computer-animated films in 1995 and has made just 28 features in the intervening 30 years. DreamWorks? Well, it's made 49 features in just over 25 years. Some of these films are best left forgotten or have only been rediscovered over time courtesy of oddball memes (see: "Bee Movie"). But DreamWorks Animation, amidst the Trolls and boss babies, the chatty penguins of Madagascar, and silent horses who embody the spirit of the Cimarron, has made 10 genuinely solid movies. And with the arrival in late September of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," there's no better time than right now to rank those 10 films and see if the studio's latest title makes the grade.

The Oscars race is wide open this year, and so is the question of which film will win the coveted TIFF Audience Award.
With A-listers like Selena Gomez and Angelina Jolie and breakout stars like Mikey Madison and Gabriel Labelle, the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival concludes on Sunday after screening 278 films over its 10-day run. Following Pedro Almodóvar’s stunning melodrama, “The Room Next Door,” taking the Golden Lion at Venice, attention shifts to the Canadian festival to see which film will get a significant boost in the early days of the best picture race.
While some films here scream awards potential, others are destined only for commercial success, while others are just blips in the massive lineup. Below are potential awards contenders from other films screened at the festival and Variety’s predictions on which film will win the TIFF Audience Award on Sunday, Sept. 15.

The 51st Telluride Film Festival officially kicked off Friday afternoon with the world premiere of Piece by Piece, an animated documentary about the innovative singer, songwriter and record producer Pharrell Williams, as the Patron Preview screening at the Werner Herzog Theatre. And the consensus of those in attendance was that the film is a truly original, outside-the-box, rollicking good time.
Directed by the great Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom), the taut 93-minute film — at the request of Williams, who experiences sounds visually, something known as synesthesia — employs Lego animations to illustrate Williams’ journey from the projects of Virginia Beach to the heights of showbiz, and the bumps he has experienced along the way. (Neville had never previously worked with animation.)
Williams is not only the film’s subject — and opens up as never before during interviews with Neville in which they are both Lego-ized — but also one of its producers.

After spending the entirety of last week’s show condescending to a lineup of confused children, Bill Maher’s most recent episode of Club Random featured an actual adult as a guest: Quentin Tarantino. This meant that Maher could once again spend the entire interview smoking pot and distractingly fiddling with liquor bottles as if his show were an elementary school production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Maher and Tarantino, the first return guest to Maher’s YouTube show/cry for help, ping-ponged through a headache-inducing assortment of topics, including the success of Taylor Swift, whether or not Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey was gay and why Kamala Harris will end up losing the presidential election (hint: it’s because she won’t appear on Maher’s HBO show).

Quentin Tarantino thinks “Toy Story 3” is one of the greatest movies ever, which is why he refuses to watch 2019’s “Toy Story 4.” During an interview on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, the Oscar winner suggested that “Toy Story” could’ve been one of the great film trilogies had the animated franchise not continued with a fourth film. A fifth “Toy Story” is now on the way.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino said. “I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the Nth degree and that’s ‘A Fistful of Dollars,’ ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.'”
“It does what no other trilogy has ever been quite able to do,” he continued. “The first movie is terrific, but...

Well, it seems like Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited 10th and final film will not be a “Toy Story” installment.
The director said during Bill Maher’s YouTube (video) podcast “Club Random” that the original “Toy Story” trilogy is one of the greatest trio of films of all time. According to Tarantino, the franchise overextended with the fourth installment. Well, he’s gonna hate this news: a fifth “Toy Story” was announced earlier this year with original director Andrew Stanton returning to the chair. “Toy Story 5” will center on children who become obsessed with technology; it is slated for a June 19, 2026 release.
“I don’t watch all the animated movies and stuff, but I’m a big fan of the ‘Toy Story’ trilogy,” Tarantino told Maher in the below video. “In the case of ‘Toy Story,’ the third one is just magnificent. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most outstanding filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, with his projects delivering such worthwhile experiences that continue to leave an indelible mark on their audiences, even after decades. A profound storyteller, he has a keen eye for exceptional works, which is why Tom Hanks’ Toy Story saga is one of his top favorites as well.

Despite not being a massive fan of animation, this one family-adventure film franchise has long held a special place in the director’s heart. But this love is only restricted to the initial three installments of the film series, with Tarantino unhesitantly openly confessing how he has “no desire” to see the fourth film for a very valid reason while Disney is milking the lore for a fifth movie.

The official announcement at D23 of Pixar’s Andrew Stanton writing and directing “Toy Story 5” is a big deal. Stanton has co-written the previous four “Toy Story” films, receiving Oscar nominations for the original and the third film.
But now as a director, he finally gets to be in total control of the franchise he helped establish. So if there was going to be a fifth “Toy Story,” he’s the perfect director for a couple of reasons.
The first is that, since “Wall-e,” Stanton has been fascinated with science fiction and the dangers of ubiquitous technology. The story for the fifth “Toy Story” allows him to double down on that fascination.
“Let’s be real,” Stanton told the packed Honda Center in Anaheim on Friday night. “Toys have some serious competition these days with phones, tablets, and technology everywhere. So, this time around, it’s toys vs. tech.

Disney has confirmed that its $2 billion-plus Frozen IP will get a three-quel in 2027. Disney exec Jennifer Lee, who is also one of the directors of Frozen and Frozen II, released a concept art of the film at the ongoing D23 event. The film was inspired by Christian Andersen’s old fairy tale The Snow Queen. The two films grossed a total of $2.76 billion at the box office.

Lee also hinted at a potential fourth film in the franchise, which obviously draws a comparison to Pixar’s seminal four-part film franchise, Toy Story. From the numbers and the success of Inside Out 2 & Despicable Me 4, the Frozen franchise is likely to surpass the $3 billion-grossing franchise.

With “Inside Out 2” blowing the roof off the summer box office, Disney and Pixar are all steam ahead on the sequel train. Next up on the slate is a return to the IP that reshaped the world of animation, “Toy Story 5.” Disney CEO Bob Iger announced development on the new installment in early 2023, with a release date later being set for June 19, 2026. At the same time as Iger’s announcement came, Buzz Lightyear star Tim Allen also shared via X, formerly known as Twitter, that he would be lending his voice to the iconic character once again. The other night I was having dinner with a couple of industry veterans, both Oscar voters, who told me they had been talking to a top producer-financier who had seen two big studio movies coming out later in the year and both were fantastic.
The producer very enthusiastically praised Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, said Paul Mescal was terrific and Denzel Washington extraordinary in it. He also saw the new Robert Zemeckis film Here, which stars and de-ages Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, also reuniting them from the 1994 Zemeckis film Forrest Gump. Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

“Inside Out 2” roared into cinema in June, becoming Pixar’s highest-grossing film in a debut weekend of all time, while its current worldwide haul at this time of writing stands at just over one billion.
The first movie — one of the most ingenious films of this century — took audiences inside the head of young Riley as she navigated a move to a new city while her emotions tried to guide her through the move in her head. This second film brings back those emotions as Riley goes through her teenage years. But Joy and Sadness and the gang have to deal with several new emotions in headquarters, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, and Ennui.
But while the film marches towards $1 billion at the box office, could it also be marching towards awards glory? Well, animated flicks don’t get the justice they deserve when it comes to the Academy Awards. So often,...

Updated: There’s joy all around as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has crossed the coveted $1B milestone at the worldwide box office. With $1,014.8B through 19 days, this is the quickest time to the mark for an animated movie ever, besting the previous record holder, Frozen 2, which got there in 25. Only 11 animated films have ever crossed the $1B threshold, and of those, Disney and Pixar combined now have eight.
Directed by Kelsey Mann, Inside Out 2 is also the first film of the year to get to $1B.
The 3rd international box office session was an estimated $108M, a 37% ease in the holdover markets, with continued No. 1s in most majors. The overseas cume is now $545.5M across 45 markets. This weekend saw Inside Out 2 pass Shrek Forever After ($514M), Madagascar 3 ($531M) and Finding Dory ($543M) to become the No. 18 animated release of all time internationally.
The running domestic total is $469.3M.

In a career that lasted four decades, the great character actor Ned Beatty worked with a number of the greatest film directors in history, starting out with John Boorman and 1972’s “Deliverance,” in which he made his spectacular screen debut. From there, he went on to work with such screen legends as Robert Altman, Sidney Lumet, John Huston, Mike Nichols and Spike Lee.
Beatty was nominated for an Academy Award for 1976’s “Network,” directed by Lumet, as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination for portraying an Irish tenor in 1991’s “Hear My Song.” Beatty did not appear in films until he was 35 years old and was immediately pegged as a character actor, a category in which he flourished. His other film credits include “Nashville,” “Superman,” “Wise Blood” and “Toy Story 3.” He died in 2021.

The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
The first film had a budget of $175 million and made $858 million worldwide. It received two Oscar noms for original screenplay and animated feature, winning the latter. However, during the era when the Academy recognized 5-10 movies for best picture, it didn’t land among the eight that included...

Don’t be afraid to catch feelings. Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office opening day of the year so far, earning a spectacular $62 million across Friday and preview screenings from 4,440 locations. It will have no trouble blasting past the $82.5 million debut earned by “Dune: Part Two” to overtake it as the biggest domestic opening of 2024. It’ll also be the first release to notch a nine-figure domestic opening in nearly 11 months — the last one to get above $100 million was “Barbie” last summer.
It’s a welcome bounce back for Pixar Animation Studios, which has struggled at the box office in recent years after Disney sent films like “Turning Red,” “Soul” and “Luca” directly to Disney+ during the Covid pandemic, a decision that Pixar head (and the director of the original “Inside Out”) Pete Docter says “trained” audiences to watch the studio’s features on streaming.

This article contains spoilers for "Inside Out" and "Inside Out 2."
When "Inside Out" premiered in 2015, adults admitted without shame that the Pixar movie where emotions have emotions melted them into giant puddles. I was no different. I caught the film during a weekday matinee and had the entire theater to myself. No screaming kids, no teens texting, and I had the best seat in the house.
This also meant that I was a sight for the poor minimum-wage worker who found an adult woman crying so hard she was dry heaving, alone, after a family film.
Bing Bong's death is typically what reduces adults to tears, but after the devastation of "Toy Story 3," the (at the time) trilogy conclusion of the very first movie I saw in the theater, I was immune to anything dealing with the devastating personification of growing beyond childish wonders. Plot: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have been doing a good job managing the emotions of their beloved human, Riley. But, as she enters her teenage years, they have their hands full dealing with a whole new slate of emotions, including the obstructive, controlling Anxiety.
Review: Ever since the pandemic, Pixar’s been struggling to recapture the zeitgeist its animated films were once so easily able to dominate. For a long time, it was almost uncanny how each film was hailed as a masterpiece, only for the company to fall off when suddenly their films became more commonly viewed via streaming than in theatres. Some say the movies got to be too specific, although for me I’d take a highly personal story like Elemental over the more generic Lightyear any day. At any rate, the company is said to be undergoing a pivot towards more universal stories, although...

Pixar has recently been making sequels to some of its most acclaimed films, and their success with fans has been decidedly mixed. For every Toy Story 3, there’s a Cars 2. This year sees the release of Inside Out 2, a sequel to one of the studio’s most acclaimed movies in the past decade. Although the sequel is mostly inferior, it’s still plenty funny and heartwarming enough to be worth watching.
Inside Out 2 picks up with Riley as a 13-year-old when she begins puberty and encounters a new set of complex emotions during an important transition in her life from middle school to high school. For a film that is supposed to be about the complexity of emotions, it’s a bit underwhelming that the story and emotions are so simplistic, but there’s still plenty to praise here.

With Inside Out 2 hitting theaters soon, I figured that now would be as good a time as any to look back at the 2015 original nearly a decade later. When Inside Out first released, Pixar was in arguably the studio’s first slump period. After 15 years of universal acclaim and box office dominance from 1995’s Toy Story to 2010’s Toy Story 3, the studio put out the critically reviled Cars 2 and the middlingly received Brave and Monsters University all in a row.
All three films still made money and Brave even took home the Best Animated Feature Oscar that year, but it nevertheless felt like Pixar had lost some of that original spark. But then came Inside Out; a completely original story from Pixar veteran Pete Docter, who had previously helmed Monsters Inc. and Up that took the studio’s “What if x had feelings?” formula to its logical...

Kevin Feige had a far crazier idea for Avengers: Endgame climax inspired by the Toy Story 3 ending. Feige wanted to kill off all the six Og Avengers at the end of the film and proposed the idea to directors Russo brothers and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. However, they shot down the idea since the directors believed that they could not do justice to all these character deaths.

If anyone’s created any animated magic in the West, it’s Disney and Pixar. Although connected since 2006 (Pixar started off as an independent studio before being acquired by Disney), the two studios have had different policies for a while, but while they still release films somewhat independently, a balance has been found and it is now more difficult to tell a Disney production from a Pixar one; two decades ago, which is not t along, it was very easy to do. But, regardless of the magic and the historical importance, both studios have been struggling for a while now in the financial sense. Workers have been laid off, projects have been put on hold and their overall number has been reduced, while those that have been released are not doing that well at the box office.

How quickly times change. There once was an era when Pixar didn’t think it needed sequels and could just go from original story to original story. In fact, in 2016, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said there were no Pixar sequel plans after Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles 2,” something of a response to the underwhelming reception to “Cars 2” and, to a lesser degree, “Toy Story 3.

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, there’s something about the purity of great animated storytelling that can shatter your heart and then make it whole again. (Think Toy Story 3.) Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis’ captivating second feature, Flow, is that kind of marvel, a vividly experiential white-knuckle survival adventure that takes place in a world on the brink of ruin. Told entirely without dialogue, this tale of a cat that evolves from self-preservation to solidarity with a motley crew of other species is something quite special.
Acquired out of Cannes for North America by Sideshow and Janus Films, Flow is of a piece with Zilbalodis’ lauded 2019 debut Away; both are essentially silent movies and both owe a debt to the painterly canvases of animation master Hayao Miyazaki. The new work drops characters designed in classic cartoon style into ravishing photo-realistic environments, at times recalling the woodsy landscapes of Danish artist Peder Mørk Mønsted.

Ryan Reynolds leads an all-star cast in a sweet, if a little messy, tale of imaginary friends reconnecting with the grown-ups who once bid them goodbye
If, the new kids comedy from John Krasinski, has all the elements of a family friendly hit: a healthy dose of sentimentality, a heavy emphasis on the power of a child’s imagination and a prerequisite of tragedy undergirding on a girl’s journey. Also, an expensive mix of live-action and animation and an all-star cast of voice actors – among them, George Clooney, Jon Stewart, Amy Schumer, Bradley Cooper, Maya Rudolph and Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt – playing a roster of Imaginary Friends (Ifs) forgotten by their grown-up creators and companions.
On paper, Krasinski’s first kids film as a writer-director checks the boxes, though in practice it’s not quite as cuddly as Blue, the giant purple bear hug of an If hammily voiced by Steve Carell,...

The majority of Pixar films are not to be watched without tissues. From the furnace farewell in Toy Story 3, to the ‘Married Life’ sequence in Up, to the ‘Remember Me’ scene in Coco, the studio tends to have one hand placed firmly on your tear-ducts. And that’s not to mention Inside Out, perhaps the most emotionally effective of any Pixar film. The ‘death’ of Bing Bong, the first foray through young Riley’s mind, the reconciliation of Joy and Sadness… it’s a non-stop heart-squeezer. And that’s a tough act to follow for this year’s Inside Out 2, following Riley through puberty as a raft of new emotions – chiefly Anxiety, plus Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui – come into play.
According to incoming writer Dave Holstein, the newly-developed ‘Belief System’ in Riley’s mind isn’t just a cool environment for the sequel to explore – it’s going...
