American Idol season 22 finalist Emmy Russell was a fan favorite who made it to the Top 5 of the reality singing competition in 2024, and she's been busy with her music career after the show. Emmy, who's the late country music legend Loretta Lynn's granddaughter, impressed the American Idol season 22 judges--Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan--with her original song, "skinny," at her audition. During the competition, she sang two more original songs, including "Like That" and "Want You."
Throughout American Idol season 22, Emmy also infused her own country style into songs such as "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt, "Lose You to Love Me" by Selena Gomez, "All the Small Things" by blink-182, "Shut Up + Dance" by Walk the Moon, "Water Under the Bridge" by Adele, "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus, and "Carried Me With You" from Onward. High school sitcoms have always been a mixed bag, largely because the issues kids are dealing with at that age beg for a more nuanced take than the half-hour format can provide. Godawful shows like "Saved by the Bell," "Head of the Class" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" are the low standard a high school sitcom has to clear nowadays, so we need to count our blessings when something as wonderful as Mike O'Brien's "A.P. Bio" and the currently airing Brian Jordan Alvarez's "English Teacher" arrives.
Before those two sitcoms, the bar was set reasonably high by Gabe Kaplan's "Welcome Back, Kotter." Based in part on Kaplan's sitcom act, the comedian stars as Gabe Kotter, a former underachiever who returns to his old Bensonhurst Brooklyn neighborhood to teach at the high school that used to seem like a prison to him. He's now in charge of a new batch of knuckleheads,...

Dragon Balls Tournament Saga has been a lot of fun building up to its final fight. Its perhaps not surprising that Dragon Balls first big martial art competition culminates in a battle between Goku and Jackie Chun, aka Master Roshi. The players in this final fight are less important than how Dragon Ball goes about this highly anticipated altercation, however.
Dragon Ball has developed a charming identity now that more than two-dozen episodes have passed and the series could go about this battle in many ways. The Grand Finals doesnt mark the 21st World Tournaments end, but Dragon Ball 26 is an exciting episode that meets expectations and fortunately doesnt crumble under pressure. Goku engages in his best and biggest battle one that still stands out as a franchise highlight. But whats even more exciting is that it finally feels like Dragon Ball is truly beginning.

Oscar-winner Adrien Brody will make his London theater debut in The Fear of 13, opening in October.
The Pianist star will play Nick Yarris, who spent 22 years on death row before his exoneration, at the 251-seat Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden. The Fear of 13 is based on a 2015 documentary by filmmaker David Sington and has been adapted for the stage by Lindsey Ferrentino.
Brody will perform the true story of Yarris, a Pennsylvania native who was wrongly convicted of the murder, rape and abduction of Linda Mae Craig, a shop assistant, in 1982. A DNA test later proved his innocence, and Yarris was released in 2004.
“I love the theater and although I have not been on the stage in many years I have been searching for the right material and this was so clearly the one,” Brody told The Guardian. “This is a story steeped in truth, that exposes systematic injustice and apathy through hope and humanity.

90 Day: The Last Resort fans, get ready because the cast for Season 2 of the popular spinoff has been announced.
It may not be official at this point, but an eagle-eyed 90 Day Fiance fan spotted several couples from the franchise filming at an Arizona resort.
Unlike last season, which was filmed at the Isla Bella Beach Resort in Marathon, Florida, Season 2 was reportedly filmed in The Grand Canyon State.
Shabooty on X (formerly Twitter) shared a post this week that included a screenshot from a Reddit thread spilling all of the tea.
Reddit user u/beyleesi titled their post, “Who do you think she was?” describing who they saw at the resort and inviting other 90 Day Fiance fans to guess who one mystery blonde might have been.

Bill Murray becomes a Na’vi (sort of) in a bizarre AI-generated trailer for Wes Anderson’s Avatar. The elements of Anderson’s quirky and whimsical filmmaking style have become well-known to film audiences, thanks to an extended run of acclaimed movies including The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Later in 2023, Anderson’s unique approach to film storytelling will go on display again with Asteroid City, a 1950s-set piece featuring an all-star cast.
Ahead of the forthcoming Asteroid City release date, YouTube channel Curious Refuge has unleashed its own Anderson tribute in the form of an AI-generated trailer that imagines the unimaginable: Avatar as directed by Anderson.
The clip features AI renditions of many Anderson favorites, including the aforementioned Murray, Tilda Swinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson. Dubbed The Peculiar Pandora Expedition, Anderson’s Avatar does not look as thrilling...

When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the Oasis, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

Virtual reality isn't just an escape f0r Wade Watts, it's a chance for a better real life. Following its infectiously fun trailer debut at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, the official trailer for Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One (based on the book of the same name by Ernest Cline) has been released by Warner Bros., giving viewers the chance to rock out to Van Halen's "Jump."

Rebooted franchises reek of cheap Hollywood cash grabs, but in light of those expectations, the refurbished “Planet of the Apes” franchise pulls off a minor miracle. With “War for the Planet of the Apes,” technological wizardry and first-rate storytelling combine into a bracing action-adventure that concludes the best science fiction trilogy since the original trio of “Star Wars” movies.
That’s not to say the movie’s a flawless achievement, devoid of ham-fisted dialogue or predictable plot twists that often hobble movies designed for mass market appeal. But insofar as the premise is concerned, it catapults beyonds the cheesy nature of the material to deliver a serious, gripping big screen achievement elevated by astonishing special effects and filmmaking prowess to match.
The second entry directed by Matt Reeves following 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the dynamic finale continues Reeves’ ability to transform the man-versus-simian premise into a fiery war movie,...

“I feel like I fucking blew it.”
Charlie Kaufman was talking about his career. More specifically, he was addressing his supposed failure to capitalize on the momentum generated by his scripts for “Being John Malkovich,” “Adaptation” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” Once upon a time, Kaufman’s name was spoken at Hollywood lunches with the same breathless excitement and opportunistic fervor that studio executives tend to reserve for young starlets — back then, he commanded more attention (if not more money) than any other screenwriter since “Lethal Weapon” scribe Shane Black. His potential in the industry seemed positively zoo-sized.
These days, so far as Kaufman is concerned, that’s no longer the case.
“I don’t feel like I’ve got that cachet that I had at a certain point,” he said, looking hard at the table between us. “I see people seizing the moment when they have the...

Need a good laugh, but only got an hour and a half? Might we recommend this little lot...
I’m of the firm belief that films work most effectively when their runtime is 90 minutes or less. It forces an economy of story and dialogue which propels the film into its best self. No bloated middle, extended ending, or wasted stories here. This goes double for comedies. They should never outstay their welcome. But they seem to be getting longer, as we recently pointed out here.
So to refresh your movie comedy palette, here are 25 films that are 90 minutes or under. I’ve tried to avoid the more obvious ones, and shine a light on those comedies which might have gone a bit unappreciated over the years, but are well worth a hour and a half of your time. This lean runtime isn’t a guarantee of greatness of course,...

Werner Herzog has had one of the most fascinating careers in Hollywood history, which spans over 50 years. He has directed Oscar-nominated documentaries (Encounters at the End of the World), written and directed a unique slate of narrative features (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Rescue Dawn) and even portrayed distinct characters in front of the camera (The Grand, Jack Reacher). The multi-hyphenate returns behind the lens to direct his first feature since 2009's My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? with Queen of the Desert, which brings the story of Gertrude Bell to the big screen. She is well known as an important historical figure, whose travels and writings helped shape Middle East countries such as Jordan, Syria and Iraq in the early 1900s, but this sprawling biopic, which screened as part of AFI Fest in Hollywood on Sunday night, is plagued by wooden performances from an all-star...

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. The first deals were announced yesterday before the event officially opened, with The Weinstein Co notably boarding Im Global’s The Man Who Made It Snow. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.
Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. Distributors are looking for product for 2016 and beyond, and some memorable buys have emerged here in recent years. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

For many movie and television fans, the SAG Awards trophy is the one that really counts, and on Sunday (January 25) the Screen Actors Guild handed out a slew of hardware to some very deserving recipients.
Not surprisingly, “Birdman” ended up winning the Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture honors, giving Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts and Edward Norton something to smile about.
Eddie Redmayne scored the Outstanding Performance By a Male Actor in a Motion Picture title for his compelling depiction of Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” while Julianne Moore nabbed the Female Actor trophy for “Still Alice.”
The Best Drama Television Series award went to the cast of “Downton Abbey,” and the team at “Orange is the New Black” came in first for Comedy Series.

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

The 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight and if you're like me, the Best Ensemble win for Birdman makes it your new frontrunner for Oscar's Best Picture as it has now won not only with the Producers Guild, but with the Screen Actors Guild. Of course, there is one oddity to this win, while it took home ensemble, Michael Keaton lost Best Actor to Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), Emma Stone lost Best Supporting Actress to Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) and Edward Norton lost Best Supporting Actor to J.K. Simmons (Whiplash). Apparently Birdman is all about the sum of its parts... I can accept that. The only category I haven't mentioned was Julianne Moore winning Best Actress for Still Alice and perhaps I don't mention that because it's quite simply a joke. Put that performance alongside the likes of Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and can you really tell me...

It's time for the 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards -- the only awards show to exclusively honor TV and film performers. 'Cause who else is going to give these poor unrecognized souls the attention they deserve?
Some big names were up for major awards Sunday night (January 25), from Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Ruffalo - who were nominated in both TV and film categories, not that they showed up - to Jennifer Aniston, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, and the casts of "Game of Thrones," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland," etc. It's kind of like the Golden Globes, if the Golden Globes just focused on the pretty people and left out the lesser-known and potentially less attractive producers/directors/writers.
SAG Awards 2015 aired live from 8 to 10 p.m. Et on TBS and TNT. Unlike most awards shows, it actually ended slightly early. (Is that what happens when no one hosts?) Here is the full list of winners,...

After scoring the world premiere of Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” 2015’s most Oscar-nominated film bar “Birdman,” The Berlin Film Festival suddenly seems to have more clout and sway than usual. The festival already has a tremendous line-up that includes anticipated new films by Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog, Anton Corbijn, Jafar Panahi and more. Berlin announced the completion of their line-up today and there’s definitely a few more cherries to top it all off. As expected (he’s being feted by the festival), Wim Wenders’ 3D drama, “Every Thing Will Be Fine,” starring James Franco, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Rachel McAdams, will be part of the final line-up, but will play out of competition. Other key additions include two new unexpected films by Chilean auteurs, a documentary by Patricio Guzman titled “The Pearl Button” and a new surprise drama from Pablo Larraín (director of “No” starring Gael Garcia Bernal...

Updated with more details: Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman led the way this morning with nine mentions apiece as nominations were announced for the 87th Oscars, with the Weinstein Company’s The Imitation Game following with eight. All three were included in the Best Picture race in a category that featured only eight of a possible 10 nominees, joining Warner Bros’ American Sniper, early awards-season frontrunner Boyhood from IFC Films, Focus Feature’ The Theory Of Everything, Sony Pictures Classics’ Whiplash and Paramount’s Selma.
Selma, which had been left off of several awards lists before today, finally scored with a Best Pic nom, but director Ava DuVernay and lead actor David Oyelowo were left off in their respective categories. Among the late bloomers to score this morning was American Sniper, which landed six noms overall including Best Pic, Best Actor for Bradley Cooper and Best Adapted Screenplay...

Big night for Boyhood as it adds a Best Picture (Drama) win to its precursor repertoire at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards not to mention a win for Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). The Globes also pretty much paved the way for a Julianne Moore (Still Alice) win at the Oscars along with the inevitable Supporting Actor win for J.K. Simmons (Whiplash and Michael Keaton (Birdman) for Best Actor. There were, however, some interesting kinks in the road. Even though I have Birdman as my #1 film of 2014, it was great seeing The Grand Budapest Hotel take home Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) and while Birdman didn't take home that award, it won for Best Screenplay, which adds a little intrigue to the Best Original Screenplay race. How to Train Your Dragon 2 winning Best Animated Feature over The Lego Movie was a bit of a surprise and...

Boyhood flew the flag on a strong night for independent cinema as IFC Films’ coming-of-age tale prevailed in the motion picture drama, director and supporting actress categories at the 72nd Golden Globes awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday night (January 11).
Fox Searchlight’s The Grand Budapest Hotel earned corresponding honours in the comedy or musical section on an occasion completely lacking in surprises — even Prince’s hush-hush role as an awards presenter was leaked beforehand — and reinforced the notion that awards season continues to be a place where independent cinema comes into its own.
Eddie Redmayne was named best dramatic actor for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in Focus Features’ The Theory Of Everything after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association bestowed best comedy or musical honours on a highly emotional Michael Keaton for his role as an actor on the comeback trail in Searchlight/New Regency’s Birdman.

The Golden Globes are chosen by a small group of 80-odd full and part-time journalists in Los Angeles — how hard can they be to predict?
Pretty hard, sometimes. Where the tastes of the 6,000-plus Oscar voters tend to even out and make sense, there’s often something confounding about the priorities and agendas of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s motley assortment of voters. But knowing that they like big stars, they like to be on winning teams and they like to spread the wealth to keep everybody happy, TheWrap has taken a look at Sunday’s categories to offer our predictions.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Check out the full list of nominees below,...

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...
