With the burgeoning Golden Age of documentaries, top non-fiction talent has never been more in demand. After landing a big promotion at A&E that put her charge of series as well as television, Molly Thompson got snapped up by deep-pocketed Apple TV to run their documentary content; one of the Silicon Valley giant’s first big buys was upcoming documentary “Elephant Queen.” And now MTV Studios has hired ex-HBO Documentary Films president Sheila Nevins to launch MTV Documentary Films.
There’s competition for top documentary talent and Nevins knows how to get it. Even in the specialty film world, documentaries are about the only thing working these days as theatrical narrative films are looking less and less commercially viable.
At HBO, Nevins reigned atop of the documentary pyramid for decades, adapting to more and more competition and new technology. Before Nevins’ exit from HBO a year ago, where she...

“We didn’t get mad, we got smart,” HBO CEO Michael Fuchs said about hitting The Wall, looking back at HBO stalling in 1984 from the vantage of the early 1990s. Actually, a lot of the rank and file didn’t get mad or smart; we’d seen 125 of our friends and colleagues get shown the door when the company had suddenly flatlined after eight years of phenomenal growth, and what we got was scared.
But it’s to the credit of HBO’s execs that whatever anxieties they may have had, they showed no panic or even nervousness in public. Instead, they poured any concerns into energetically and immediately addressing the question of, “What do we do now?” The world we knew had changed and there was no going back to the Gold Rush days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The company required a humongous...

The Nixon director's new American history series sees him follow in the footsteps of Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch and Steven Spielberg
The title of Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States, the 10-part documentary series that starts its UK run this Friday (Sky Atlantic, 9pm), is carefully calculated to maximise on the celebrity of the film director, possibly surprising viewers at finding such a big-screen name in the small-screen listings.
Stone's attempt to correct what he sees as Us-centric teaching of 20th-century history in American schools is full of arresting connections – sauerkraut was renamed liberty cabbage in the Us during the first world war and french fries became freedom fries during the "war on terror" – and the British screening of his series is subject to its own intriguing connection: this week's announcement that the American drama Bates Motel has been bought for broadcast in the UK by the Universal Channel.

Star map from Prometheus
Photo: 20th Century Fox Yesterday I had some Prometheus viral news and today comes more with the star map you see above unveiled on the Weyland Industries site. You can get a hi-res look at the image by clicking the source link. [source] Speaking of viral sites, there's one for Men in Black III, but my god, do you really care? By the way, is Will Smith coming up with a new rap for this one? [source] I know none of you are surprised to hear Warner Bros. has set director Brad Peyton and writers Brian and Mark Gunn to return for Journey 3 after Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has already managed to bring in over $270 million worldwide. Producer Beau Flynn tells EW both Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and Hank (Dwayne Johnson) are "absolutely" returning for the new film as are the actors playing them with a targeted 2014 release.

New York — The Clipse's new LP, Til the Casket Drops, is finally coming out next week, and all the brother-duo can do is smile.
"I was just vibing out to it," Malice said of the album recently. "I don't [usually] listen to [the album]: I do it, I lay it down, I wait for it to get ready, then I go back and absorb it. I feel sorry for a lot of cats. We got that album right now."
Malice said it was "unfair" to ask him what his favorite song from the LP, was but he did list a few he was partial to; "I like 'Champion,' '[Popular Demand] (Popeye's)' 'Showing Out,' and 'Door Man' is incredible."
The Clipse recently released the video for "Door Man," which they shot in Virginia.
