Tom Wambsgans, international spy? If the latest John le Carré adaptation hoping to make it to the small screen has its way, we'd be nearly halfway there. That's right, Successionstar (and many people's favorite Darcy) Matthew Macfadyen is attached to star in the latest mysterious spy thriller story writ large by the prolific and beloved le Carré. Legacy of Spies, based on the author's series of George Smiley-fronted novels, is said to be the latest project from independent production studio The Ink Factory.
According to a report from TheWrap, Macfadyen will play the iconic George Smiley in a series that will ultimately be executive produced by the highly-regarded writer and executive producer Graham Yost. With several scripts already ready to go, it seems as though The Ink Factory is excited to get this series green lit for a network or streamer. And it makes sense: John le Carré's work...

Rachel Weisz is the Oscar winner who has been very selective of her screen appearances of late, and it has certainly paid off. In 2018 alone, she co-starred in two highly-regarded films -- "Disobedience" from Oscar winner Sebastián Lelio as the daughter of a late Orthodox rabbi who is romantically drawn to a female childhood friend, and Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite," in which she plays Lady Sarah Churchill, a noblewoman whose position in the court of Queen Anne is threatened by her upstart cousin. Her performance as Lady Sarah earned Weitz her first BAFTA Award.
In fact, in the course of her 30 year-long career in films, Weisz has amassed quite a collection of awards. She won an Academy Award for her performance in 2005's "The Constant Gardener" and was Oscar-nominated again for "The Favourite." The Academy Awards were once the gold standard of cinematic excellence. Since then, they have spiraled into a glittery, self-important popularity contest. Now, merit takes a backseat to politics, nostalgia, and the inexplicable desire to award the most Oscar-bait performance of the year.
It’s a chaotic mix of questionable snubs, undeserving wins, and choices so baffling they make you wonder if the voters are watching the same movies as the rest of us.

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns are beloved films from the late '90s and early '00s. The adventures of Rick O'Connell and his Egyptologist wife, Evy, delight and entertain fans decades later. The third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, isn't quite as well-regarded.
The third film in The Mummy franchise suffered for a couple of reasons, but one that fans are quick to point out is that Rachel Weisz, who played Evy, didn't return to reprise her role. Instead, the character of Evy was recast and portrayed by Maria Bello. There are a couple of rumors floating around as to why Weisz was absent from Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

The spy thriller is a popular genre with countless films, plenty of major hits, and several long-running franchises. Secret agents like Jason Bourne and Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt are major American action heroes and, of course, James Bond remains the most iconic British spy. In 2011, however, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy gave audiences a different type of spy drama and a protagonist that easily rivals these other classics. The film is certainly slower and less action-packed than other movies in the genre and Garry Oldman's George Smiley isn't tough or suave like Bourne or Bond but, over two decades later, it's still one of the best spy thrillers of all time.
Set primarily in London in the early 1970s, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy focuses on the inner workings of British intelligence and counter-intelligence during the Cold War. Garry Oldman stars as George Smiley, a former senior official in "The Circus,...

As we wind down the year with holiday cheer and comfort viewing, IndieWire’s craft team picks the best TV cinematography of 2024. We weren’t seeking the slickest-looking eye candy, nor even the most elegantly shot series (although many of these projects are striking), but instead sought titles in which the cinematography was integral to the vision of its creator and elevated the storytelling of some of the year’s best shows.
While the long and repeated grind of television production can make the art of cinematography more of a team sport working under the umbrella of a series’ visual bible, in the age of limited series, there were a number cinematographers on this list who shot a vast majority, if not the entire series, and this list features a number of director/cinematographer combinations whose collaboration is more commonly associated with feature film production. Readers who regularly follow Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions may have noticed a movie quietly working its way up the ranks in various categories. That movie is “Conclave,” an adaptation of Robert Harris‘s best-selling 2016 novel, which was released nationwide by Focus Features on Friday, October 25. So now seems like a good time to look at which categories “Conclave” can thrive in.
Directed by Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front“), the movie follows Ralph Fiennes‘s Cardinal Lawrence, who has taken on the less than envious task of running the elections to select a new pope after the previous pontiff dies suddenly. Many cardinals are in the running, and some even want Lawrence to take on that lofty role, until someone lurking in the shadows begins revealing dirt on the candidates.

There aren’t many actors whose filmographies can stack up against Ralph Fiennes. Think about it – Schindler’s List, Strange Days, Quiz Show, The English Patient, The Constant Gardener, The Grand Budapest Hotel, etc. Plus, he was M in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies and Voldemort. In recent years, Fiennes seems to be getting better and better, with The Menu an art-house smash, while he’s also appearing in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
Add to that already impressive list of credits Edward Berger’s Conclave, in which he plays a Cardinal presiding over a Papal election who turns into a sleuth when he discovers backstabbing amongst the candidates. An adaption of the novel by Robert Harris, I absolutely loved this movie when I saw it at TIFF (read my review). Can a great actor be taken for granted?
It’s been 30 years since Ralph Fiennes broke out as vicious Nazi Amon Goeth in “Schindler’s List,” which earned him his first Oscar nomination, followed three years later by his second, for the romantic adventure “The English Patient.” While he has labored in the commercial trenches on three Bond films (as M) and four Harry Potter installments (as Lord Voldemort), Fiennes has delivered many Oscar-worthy performances over the decades. Somehow, they were overlooked by the Academy Actors branch.
In short, he’s overdue. “Conclave” is their opportunity to set things right.
Edward Berger’s follow-up to Oscar-winning German war film “All Quiet on the Western Front” is a total crowdpleaser. The English-language “Conclave,” adapted by Peter Straughan from Robert Harris’s bestselling thriller, played well at Telluride and Toronto (Metascore 78), followed by audience awards at the regional festivals Middleburg and Mill Valley.

Written and directed by Somali-Canadian hip hop artist K’naan Warsame, the film is a slowburn drama, observational in its visual footprint and spare in its narrative tendencies. At the same time the film — which bills itself as “the first Somali film produced by a major Hollywood studio” — is replete with bursts of cinematic energy that keep one curious.

The Oscars will surely knock on Pedro Almodóvar’s door this awards season.
Pedro Almodóvar’s expansive filmography has shaped international cinema for over four decades. With his English-language directorial debut, “The Room Next Door,” fresh off winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the Spanish auteur and distributor Sony Pictures Classics are setting their sights on landing Almodóvar’s first best picture nomination.
Adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel “What Are You Going Through,” the film follows two women — war correspondent Martha (Tilda Swinton) and author Ingrid (Julianne Moore) — who reunite after years apart under challenging circumstances.

Known for her breakthrough performances in films like The Mummy and The Constant Gardener, Rachel Weisz has maintained a strong presence in the film industry. However, despite her consistent success in the spotlight, the actress remains notably private about her personal life, particularly her marriage to James Bond star Daniel Craig.

The couple, who met while filming Dream House, got married within a year of dating and have kept much of their relationship away from the public eye. Weisz, however, once reflected that keeping such privacy is crucial for her to preserve the intimacy and authenticity of her relationship away from public scrutiny.

In keeping with annual tradition, The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor (awards) Scott Feinberg and senior editor (film) Rebecca Keegan huddled at the end of this year’s Telluride Film Festival to discuss their Labor Day weekend in the Rockies. (Please note: THR will now be posting a written back-and-forth of this sort every month under the banner of ‘The Awards Pundits,’ with Feinberg, Keegan, deputy awards editor Beatrice Verhoeven and senior awards editor Steven Zeitchik all participating.)

Conclave, the German filmmaker Edward Berger’s follow-up to his Oscar-celebrated interpretation of All Quiet on the Western Front, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. And if my gut reaction to the film, and that of industry insiders with whom I consulted after it ended, are any indication, then an Oscar race that has heretofore looked awfully thin may well have found a new top-tier, across-the-board contender.
The film, which Peter Straughan adapted from Robert Harris’s 2016 novel about the aftermath of a pope’s sudden death and the chaotic succession process that followed it, is hard to describe. I suppose “dramatic thriller” is apt, although there are also moments of comedy and horror, with multiple crazy twists that should not be spoiled. Some are likening it to Dangerous Liaisons, others to the quirky films of Yorgos Lanthimos.

Ralph Fiennes is a curious case at the Oscars. He has earned two nominations in his career, but they both came back in the ’90s for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “The English Patient” (1996). What makes that so curious is that he never stopped appearing in Oscar movies, but he somehow wasn’t nominated for any of them over the next 27 years. This year, though, the combined predictions of Gold Derby users suggest that Fiennes will finally make the cut again for Best Actor for “Conclave.”
Let’s consider Fiennes’s impressive filmography since “The English Patient.” “The End of the Affair” (1999) earned co-star Julianne Moore an Oscar nom. “The Constant Gardener” (2005) won an Oscar for co-star Rachel Weisz. “In Bruges” (2008) contended for its original screenplay. “The Reader” (2008) won an Oscar for co-star Kate Winslet and was nominated for Best Picture. “The Hurt Locker” (2009) won Best Picture. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) was...

Danny Huston compares Kevin Costner's Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, to a "fat novel." Huston portrays the character of Colonel Houghton in Horizon. Huston "relished" reading the script for his other Western, The Dead Don't Hurt, which is directed by Lotr's actor Viggo Mortensen.
Most Marvel fans will immediately recognize Danny Huston as X-Men Origins: Wolverines (2009) tyrannical William Stryker, who was utterly obsessed with collecting Mutant powers and applying them to his uncanny version of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). Today, Huston is coming off gripping performances in back-to-back Westerns, appearing in Viggo Mortensens The Dead Dont Hurt and Kevin Costners fat novel of a film, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1. And during an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, Huston differentiated working on the two genre pieces by saying:
I guess let's start from a script from a point of view. Viggo's is a tight script. It's like the skin of a drum.

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Plot: John Sugar is an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
Review: Detective stories and noir films are iconic genres in film and literature. Who doesn’t love a grizzled private eye who saves the girl and beds the femme fatale? Pop quiz: Which of these Apple TV+ shows is real? "Dear Edward," "Acapulco," "Liason," or "Swagger?" Trick question -- the answer is all of them. I'm not trying to dunk on those specific shows, just illustrating the point that since Apple TV+ is still not a super heavy hitter in the streaming game, a lot of great stuff can easily fall through the cracks. But if you like compelling television, you won't want the new series "Sugar" to fall through the cracks.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced and frequently directed by Fernando Meirelles, the series is a noir mystery starring Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a private investigator who is tasked with tracking down a missing girl in Los Angeles. You've seen that premise a thousand times in movies featuring guys like Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Dana Andrews. But "Sugar" not only welcomes those comparisons, it actively...

Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

As of this writing the combined predictions of Gold Derby users lean towards Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) with 17/5 odds in this year’s Oscar race for Best Actor. Meanwhile, Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) is close behind in second place with 69/20 odds. However, the former may have more going for him. Here are five reasons why I think Murphy is the favorite.
SEEOscars: Will ‘Oppenheimer’ or ‘Poor Things’ win all three design awards?
1. He’s starring in the Best Picture frontrunner
“Oppenheimer” is expected to be quite a juggernaut on Oscar night. It’s currently predicted to take home eight accolades: Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Score and Best Sound. With that in mind, it’s possible that Murphy could be carried along in the sweep. He’s the face of the whole thing and carries the film on his shoulders.

There’s a saying over here in the UK about London buses. You wait so long for one and then two turn up at once. That notion could play out at this year’s Academy Awards as this 2024 ceremony could be the second in a row where all four acting winners are rookie nominees.
This happened last year when Michelle Yeoh edged out Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while her co-stars also emerged victorious. Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor went to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2023, Jamie Lee Curtis reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively. But the studios decided to campaign only their co-stars,...

Errol Morris is one of the greatest living documentarians, having created some of the best films of the past 45 years. Over the past three decades, most of his films have focused on singular individuals — Stephen Hawking, Robert McNamara, Donald Rumsfeld, Joyce McKinney, Steve Bannon. He continues that trend with The Pigeon Tunnel, though in several ways, it feels like a kind of autobiography, despite his subject being the legendary spy writer, John le Carré.
The film opens with an explicit mention of interrogations, something Morris is quite familiar with; after all, his clever 'intelligent camera' set-up for interviews is called 'The Interrotron,' which adds two-way mirrors and video monitors to the usual interview set-up and enables the subject to feel and look comfortable staring straight into the camera. The Pigeon Tunnel itself is notable for its kaleidoscopic use of mirroring and splitting, as if the nature of truth is...
